Why do we use this phrase That's a good question "I'm
doing well" is a response to the question "How are you "
That's how you express how you're feeling
Also this response is part of small talk and thus the start of many conversations
Yes so the question how are you and the answer
I'm doing well are a staple of every small talk
And why should you always just say "I'm doing fine"
So be careful Alternative number one
I'm doing fine
Okay this alternative is very similar
Sure I'm doing well but
just a bit differently
The sentence
structure is different
It sounds casual and flows much more quickly If you want to sound
more positive try saying "I'm doing
great" instead I'm doing great
I'm doing great too I'm doing superbly
Sounds much better doesn't it
Similarly positive is the following alternative
Alternative number two
I'm feeling great Or
you could say it
more casually
Instead of "es geht mir " you can also use the verb "fühlen "
Of course you can combine it with other adjectives too
I feel good
I feel great
I feel excellent
Top is an informal synonym for excellent
I'm feeling top
Does anything strike you about this
We've dropped the E ending in the verb fühlen
We do this very often in spoken German
I go I feel I do
You also frequently omit the E ending when using verbs in the first person singular

And now let's move on to alternatives for "I'm doing well "
Alternative Option 3
This response sounds confident and
genuinely content You're saying
you're truly doing well It
couldn't better Okay let's move on
Alternative Number 4
Or you could just say it outright
You already use this frequently in everyday life
It's a very quick way to express that you're truly doing well
Everything running perfectly
also implies another possible
response you may have heard before Runs Yes exactly
With just one word you can express
the same thing In casual relaxed
situations you can simply say "Running " How's it going Running
That means everything is fine
It's not incredibly positive but
it's not really negative either It just goes It goes It runs
It's all more or less fine
Everything's fine It's working
And if everything's alright meaning you're not doing great but you're
not doing badly either you can say "
Pretty good " How are you Pretty good
Not everything is perfect all the time
And that's perfectly fine
This response indicates you're neither doing poorly nor particularly well
Simple It's going pretty well Pretty well
If you give this response your friends and family will
Perhaps mention it and ask what’s going on
Saying "also totally fine" already implies something’s up
There are a few other variations you can use as well
So so It's not great anymore
Or it goes that way It goes that way
Or not the best day but it'll do
Not the best day but it'll do For days when you're not
feeling yourself and everything just feels a bit overwhelming
Also a bit tiring I’ve still got one more option for you
Number six I’m feeling a little stressed
I'm a bit stressed Not every day is
great Be honest—it makes you likable
Being honest and genuine is sometimes especially important while at work
I have a few other alternatives here that express the same
thing For instance I'm feeling a bit stressed from work
Or I'm swamped right now
That's an idiom To have a lot one's plate
Meaning to have a lot to do
Alternative number seven
Don't worry How
are you
That's naturally ironic and very
German Truly quintessentially German
You're saying that in a funny way—today wasn't great but let's just not talk about it
So don't ask
I'll show you with an example
Don't worry That works well
with friends or colleagues and
shows humor But please don't use it in formal situations
Another typically German alternative is I can't
complain
So German
What does that actually mean
When I first heard this version I was
a bit surprised I can't complain Huh
It kind of sounds like the person is sad they can't complain
I want to complain but I can't
complain Do you know the word "complain"
It means to express dissatisfaction
So I can't express my dissatisfaction
But why
So the meaning is quite simple
Everything is fine
I can't complain
You're just saying that things are going perfectly well
Nothing special but nothing bad either
It's a modestly positive response
This alternative is often used informal situations
You can also use a few other variations such as
I can't complain
Or I can't complain
But if you're in a formal situation you'll need different options different alternatives
Don't worry I've got a few examples for you here too so you'll always have the perfect response ready
The first option is
Thank you for asking I'm doing well
Or
These responses all sound polite and professional making them ideal for office use or emails
You now know many different alternatives to the phrase "I'm doing well "
But perhaps you've sometimes wondered how honest you really are when answering how you should be feeling
After all it can vary significantly from country to country
So how would you respond to "How are you in Germany "
Well it depends entirely on who's asking and the context
Sometimes we automatically reply with "I'm good thanks and
you " Or
That's a typical cliché a fixed expression used without much thought
We say it to be polite or just to quickly get the conversation
going It doesn't matter whether you're actually doing well or not
That's like an idiom In this case the exchange of "how
are you " and "I'm doing well" is simply a natural conversation opener
By the way I’ve got a full video for you on
how to say "how are you " — plus alternatives
