When you have a lady friend over to your house, it's nice to be able to offer her a drink. But it's even better to know how to craft her an elegant cocktail.
The stereotype is that women just like sweet "girly drinks" with no real dimension of flavor--just a bunch of sugar to cover up the alcohol. But I think women are a little more complicated--and sophisticated--than that.
In this video, I show you how to make 3 cocktails that women absolutely love. All of these drinks taste amazing, but even more than that, they allow for some showmanship on your part (which makes the experience fun for both of you). Best of all, these 3 drinks are unique since they all stimulate multiple senses beyond just taste.
Hey gents, up next I'm going to show you how to make three cocktails that are absolutely
easy to make but will impress any woman.
Hey gents, I'm Kyle from The Distilled Man.
So this channel is all about providing actionable advice for the everyday gentleman.
Let me ask you this, so when you have a special lady friend over, isn't it nice to be able
to offer her a drink?
Of course you could offer her a beer if that's what she likes, or maybe a glass of wine,
but I think it's even better if you can offer her a nice cocktail.
There's just something more special, maybe classy is the right word, about the care and
attention that you put into crafting her a fancy cocktail, you know, rather than just
saying like, okay, here's your Chardonnay.
So in this video I'm going to show you how to make three cocktails that women love, and
if you want to jump right to the recipes, you can click on the time code in the description
below, but if you want to hear real quick why I selected these three cocktails in particular,
keep watching.
The stereotype, of course, is that women just like sweet, girly drinks, you know, no real
dimension of flavor, just a ton of sugar to sort of drown out the flavor of the alcohol.
Well, I think women are a little more complicated than that.
You see, I believe that what women really appreciate is when a drink is, to use a technical
term, fancy.
And what do I mean by that?
Well, first, all three of these drinks that I'm about to show you taste amazing, which
is kind of the price of entry, right?
And secondly, and more importantly, all these drinks allow for a certain amount of showmanship,
so it adds to the fun and the fanciness.
And finally, and I think this is really where the magic is, they all engage multiple senses
beyond just taste.
So now that we're clear on that, the first drink that I think is a real crowd-pleaser
with women is the Mojito.
Now, this drink originated in Cuba, and it's a great hot-weather drink, but whether it's,
you know, winter or summer, I think it's just super refreshing and fun to drink, and I think
ladies love it because it's festive, but kind of in a laid-back way.
So to make the Mojito, you basically take a highball glass and then put about two to
three mint sprigs in the bottom of the glass, then add about an ounce of simple syrup in
there, and then you want to muddle that together very gently, so you want to sort of press
and turn.
The key here is that you're trying to extract some of the essential oils of the mint without
totally ripping up the mint leaves, because the last thing you want is for your special
lady to take a sip of the drink and then look in the mirror and realize that it looks like
she's been eating grass or something.
So then you'll add in about an ounce and a half of rum, three-quarters ounce of lime
juice, and then add in some ice, and then stir, and then you'll top all that off with
some soda water and garnish with a lime wedge and maybe an extra sprig of mint.
And since that sprig of mint on top is really more for scent and visual appeal rather than
taste, one trick I've seen mixologists do before is to spank the mint, and this actually
helps wake up the essential oils of the mint without ruining the appearance of the mint
sprig.
Mmm, spank that mint!
Again, what's nice about this drink is that it tastes great, you get that nice visual
appeal of the mint, and then also you get that sort of fresh herbaceousness from the
mint as well.
The second drink is the French 75.
Now I've written about this drink before, I've kind of got a soft spot for this drink.
I think it's one of the most elegant drinks that you can make for a lady, and partly because
it contains that magical elixir that every woman loves, champagne, or sparkling wine.
But beware, this drink actually can pack a punch.
So interesting piece of trivia, this drink was named after the 75 millimeter artillery
that the French used during World War I, and the saying was that this drink packed such
a wallop that it was like getting hit with the French 75.
So to make it, just take a shaker filled with ice, and then fill it with two ounces of gin,
one ounce of simple syrup, and then three quarters of an ounce of fresh squeezed lemon juice.
Shake that up for about 10 to 15 seconds, strain that into a highball glass, or you
can use a champagne flute like I'm using, and then top the whole mixture off with champagne.
And then finally, garnish with a lemon twist.
And by the way, if you want a step-by-step tutorial on how to make a lemon twist, it's
actually really, really easy.
I did a separate video on a couple cocktail garnishes that are easy to do, and I'll link
to that in the description below.
Now, you'll notice I shook first, and then I added the champagne.
If you don't do that, of course, you're going to have a big mess on your hands.
Now, again, I just love this drink.
It's got such a good balance of flavor with the citrus and the gin, and sort of that mouth
feel of the champagne.
It's just really wonderful.
But also, I think any time you bust out a bottle of champagne, it automatically becomes
an event.
You're automatically in fancy territory.
Because it just makes it more special, and I think it's something that women appreciate.
The final drink that women love, of course, is the Cosmo, or the Cosmopolitan.
I mean, how could I avoid including this one, right?
Personally, I think it's sort of funny that it's become such a cliche, and I think that's
actually why it's sort of fun to make this one.
But the truth is, and the real reason I've included it, even though I'm not a vodka person,
this is actually a really solid drink.
It's got a great balance of flavors, it looks pretty, it feels really fun and elegant to
drink, especially if you add in the flamed orange peel at the end.
So to make it, just take a shaker full of ice, then add an ounce and a half of vodka,
one half ounce of Cointreau, and then a half ounce of cranberry juice, and then finally
a half ounce of freshly squeezed lime juice.
Shake that vigorously for about 10 to 15 seconds, and then strain it into a cocktail glass and
garnish it with a flamed orange peel.
And again, if you want a step-by-step tutorial on how to do the flamed orange peel garnish
as well, you can refer back to that garnish video I mentioned a moment ago, and again,
I'll link to that in the description below.
Again, the flavor and the color of this drink is great, and if you ever doubted if this
is actually a real cocktail, it actually follows the same formula as classic cocktails like
the Margarita and the Sidecar, so it's definitely a legit cocktail.
So guys, let me know what you thought of these recipes in the comments below.
Also, any other drink recipes you'd recommend making for a lady friend?
Let me know.
By the way, if you're interested in learning more about cocktails, I did write a short
book called The Distilled Man Cocktail Guide, a simple introduction to classic drink recipes
and techniques.
It includes all the recipes I just showed you, plus a bunch of other classic drink recipes,
and you can pick it up for the price of, like, less than one fancy cocktail.
And I'll go ahead and link to that in the description.
