Welcome to our language workshop Perfect German
Today we will focus on the formation of compound words In
German two or more words can be combined to create a new word
These new words also known as compound words are a fascinating part of our language
Crucial in this context are the so-called joint elements
In the following lesson you'll learn
everything about connecting elements in the German language
Best of luck with your German learning
In German two or more words can be combined
to form a new word known as a compound
To make the compound word easier to pronounce one or more sounds are inserted
Inserted between the words these elements are called
linking elements
For example if the new word consists of two words the first is called
the first part and the second word is then referred to as the second part
The junction within a word between the two compositional elements is called a fusion
Joints can be filled with joint elements
Examples Registry office
Here are the two letters e s and the joint element
In the compound word Kindergarten the e and r serve as the linking elements
At Mauseloch the letter e connects the two nouns Maus and Bloch
In the compound word Braille the letters e and n fill the gap
Here are four more examples of joint elements
With the noun flower vase the linking element is the letter n
The letter s fills the gap between pain and scream in the word "Schmerzensschrei "
In the noun "Glaubensfrage " the two letters n and s form the linking element
Finally when a noun is in doubt the letter s fills the gap
Other terms for a linking element are linking sound or linking symbol
The joint element is typically determined by
the first component but there are exceptions
For example the two words beef and meat form the compound word beef meat
But when combined the words beef and roast form the word roast beef
And the noun cattle combined with leather forms the compound noun cattle leather
Conclusion
In principle there is no universally valid rule dictating which joining element must be used in a compound word
Among all joint elements the so-called zero joint is the most common
A null gap is referred to when no additional character appears between the first and second components
Among the standard fusion elements the letter s is the most frequent occurring with a 15% frequency
Next come the letters n at 10% and e at 1.5%
The joining element accounts for the lowest share among all joining elements at approximately 1%
The same components of a composite are given regional variation through different connecting elements despite having the same meaning
There are compound words such as Schweinebraten and Schweinesbraten The
connecting element e corresponds to the plural form of Schwein which is Schweine
It thus suggests in a way pork in the plural
This form is more commonly used in standard German as spoken in northern Germany
In the word Schweinsbraten the letter s functions as a genitive suffix originally corresponding to the genitive singular
The genitive form of Schwein becomes Schweins
So it means the pig's roast singular genitive
The pork roast variant is clearly marked as southern German Austrian and Swiss
Therefore roast pork is especially featured on menus in southern Germany
Here are a few more examples of compound words with a zero suffix meaning there is no connecting element between the two nouns
Yes book Help scream Advice house Power claim Star hour Lamb meat Fear hare And table cloth
Here are additional examples of compound words with linking elements
Crib Ground beef Stolen goods Mental state Test of patience Domestic conversation
Here are a few more examples of compound words with a zero suffix meaning there is no linking element between the two nouns
Yes book Help scream Advice house Power claim Star hour Lamb meat Fear hare And table cloth
Other terms for a linking element are linking sound or linking symbol
The joining element is typically determined by the first component though exceptions exist Beef meat roast beef and cattle leather
