ICE Agents are required to have a valid judicial warrant or order to enter non-public school campuses in Massachusetts, and the Governor is reminding Bay Staters of their rights.
Governor Maura Healy says there are state restrictions on ice agents,
including needing a warrant to enter college dorms. 22 news Statehouse
reporter Olivia Ray has why this is being highlighted now. Immigration and
customs enforcement officers are required to have a valid judicial
warrant or order to enter non public school buildings in Massachusetts. And
Governor Healy is reminding base daters of their rights. This reminder comes
after ice agents reportedly lied about a missing child in order to enter a
Columbia University dorm and arrest a student last week in Massachusetts.
Warrants or orders are required for ice to enter any public or private entity
that provides education or child care, including daycare, K through 12 schools
and higher education institutions. Non public areas of public institutions
like dorms, research labs and staff offices are also covered. The Healy
Driscoll administration and the attorney general are encouraging
educational entities to mark the non public areas of their buildings with
clear signage. The governor released a statement explaining the urgency of
this reminder, saying, quote, It's outrageous that ice agents lied in
order to get into a residential building and arrest a Columbia student.
But that's par for the course for these untrained federal agents who are doing
President Trump's bidding and making us all less safe. Massachusetts students
have the legal right to demand a warrant from ice officers, and the attorney
general released a know your rights guide to help immigrants and their
communities navigate increased immigration enforcement activity. For
