They have old houses and want to save them Young
women with courage ideas and full of energy
Steffi wants to transform this historic Adlant Farm into an educational center
The estate has always been in family hands and that will remain unchanged
Linda will transform this ruin into a stylish textile workshop
Beautiful things are created with countless hands
Judith and Maren are restoring the oldest house on Norderney
It's simply our home This place is truly close to our hearts
Three stories showing how run-down buildings are transformed into jewels of architecture
The Adlant in the district of Osnabrück
Such half-timbered farmsteads are typical of this region
They are usually located outside the villages surrounded by old trees
This is the Alnwick Farm in Menslage
The owners have opened their doors today to interested citizens
It's Open Heritage Day
Steffen and Steffi Schulte zu Holsten are the hosts
And Horst Oben is the expert from the Monument Service
He inspected the building and documented the findings in a folder
We have a large courtyard and it must be kept alive
He doesn't need to be a dog for
that The story behind it is all that matters
The estate has always been in family hands and that is how it should remain
The young couple inherited the property from Steffi's father
Horst Oben points out the damages and what needs to be done here Always
exercise caution with metal components in facades exposed to weather
There is always a risk that
the masonry could be severely
damaged by corrosion Just take a look at the steel beam
There you can unfold it and see something beautifully
And if you have something like that embedded
in a solid wall it shatters the entire structure
I was here professionally about 15 years
ago Since then nothing has happened here
And I'm so thrilled that life is flowing back in here
That's exactly what makes this special for me—and what continually delights both the Monument Service and me
Where cattle once grazed guests now sit
The Erlenhof dates back to 1819 and is protected as a heritage site
Here on the threshing floor Steffen and Steffi
now want to establish a modern education center
We have high renovation costs and we don't hide that fact And if
you sit down beforehand and carefully
work out a sound business plan
With a reliable local bank and a
trusted financial advisor by your side I believe that’s quite manageable
The craftsmen will be here shortly In
about a year they hope to be finished
This historic building in East Frisia has already been restored
The Stone House in Nesse ancient chieftain's fortress dating from 1342
Now it gets a small extension in the garden—a
teahouse for the couple Franz Schreit and Kai Nilsson
So everything is all set and ready
August Heinig is coming along into the garden
Architect and monument conservator Kai Nilsson is actually known for
at he preserves old houses from demolition
Here for once he has planned a new one
We chose this spot because
it sits beautifully
among the trees and will blend in quickly
And of course here because you have such a wonderful view of the Stone House
Kai Nilsson is on his way to the neighboring village of Dornum
There a young textile designer runs a shop where she
sells her own handwoven
creations and plans to expand
She bought the neighboring house a complete ruin
We'll turn it into a workshop together for all the looms
She has 21 wooden handlooms each specialized
for different purposes—
rugs towels and scarves
About 4 000 people live in Dornum
This small community boasts a water castle and charming brick-lined streets
a synagogue a medieval castle and a small
yet exquisite textile shop called Fiefschaft
It belongs to 33-year-old Linda Detering
Hi Hello
Well everything good here at the shop Sure everything's good
Oh look the plans
I’ve brought new plans since I’m currently in the detailed design phase
The structural requirements have slightly altered everything dimensionally
I wanted to leave this here for you
They're actually printed at the same scale
It's just that all these walls and supports have collapsed now
Linda originally hails from
Emden but has lived in Dornum
for the past five years where she has found a new home
and fulfilled her dream by opening her own shop
I initially studied fashion design and then earned a master's
degree in textile design where I
also learned weaving in Scotland
Then I came back to Hamburg back
then and thought wow I
really want to weave I really want to hand-weave but where and how
That was tough—I kept wondering how I was going to manage it
And then came the unexpected twist She
now wants to renovate the house next
door and set up her looms there so
that the house can beautiful once again
Excellent
This is a genuine rescue not just cosmetic
We'll make it look nice again
This house must be completely
restored from foundation
to roof beam a true challenge for everyone involved
Hi you've come a long way
Everything's packed in here
It's hard to imagine now that people
actually still lived here right
up until winter But it's true
When the house was still furnished
What Linda failed to notice during the purchase was how poor
the building's structural condition was Now the entire
structure is set to be completely gutted
Walls are being torn down beams replaced and windows renewed
The interior walls are entirely built of clay
There is absolutely no cement here—just earth
Removing the interior walls allows you
to easily knock down and reuse the bricks
These are brick formats that don't exist anymore today
We can make excellent use of them to reconstruct the façade
The damage is even worse on the upper floor
The two structural engineers who were here as
well as the structural calculations and designs for this house impressed them greatly
After our meeting they stayed here for an hour and took photos
So basically just photos
Textbook examples of what should not exist
and what should not be able to endure yet does
Walking through here and taking in all of this you'd think you really don't need
structural engineers or architects
—something about it just holds together
Kai Nilsson is now expected to turn this rundown wreck into a gem
The Monument Service has a scheduled appointment on Norderney today
A mission for Kai Neuling
We inspected a small fisherman's cottage in 2019 which has been in
the family for a long time
It is used by the owners as a vacation home
The inspection led to a comprehensive renovation
That is currently underway
We're holding a consultation there regarding the
structural renovation which has become necessary
But also for facade cleaning and masonry
restoration Norderney thrives on tourism
The island records over 600 000 overnight stays annually There is a
wide range of dining options along with numerous hotels and guesthouses
But the residents also have their own vacation
apartments which they rent out tourists
Soon another one will arrive in the oldest residential building on the island
right in the heart of Norderney's dense urban development
In local parlance the house is known as Height 13 It was built
in the early 19th century and is
protected as a cultural monument
Kai Neuling is the monument service's expert on walls and mortar
so he knows his
way around them inside and out
At some point the building was coated with a layer of white paint That
paint now needs to be carefully removed
The house belongs to two sisters
One of them is Judith Hamerkamp from Cologne
Hello Mr Neuling
That looks entirely different now
Jörg Vorwold is the construction
contractor He wants to know how they plan to handle the facade
The masonry has been repaired repeatedly using a variety of
different materials The most recent coats are highly water-repellent
because they wanted to protect the masonry
But that ended up causing more damage
Now the major challenge is
removing the material safely
without damaging the stone excessively
Jörg Vorwold has specialized
in the restoration of listed buildings
He is now examining the stones joints and mortar with meticulous care
If were free to act as we
wished for economic reasons this
substance would essentially
be obsolete—so one might say
But it is historically valuable
So we will take on this matter and save this beautiful house
The historical value of the fisherman's house
The town of Norderney has even documented this on the facade
From the outside it will now look as it did 200 years ago
with large tiles that closely resemble the original clay tiles
Hello
Judith has never seen her beloved vacation home like this before
Oh what on earth have you found here
Yes there was actually a real floor here before
Then we pulled up the floor
And then dug down 40 centimeters
There were so many bottles lined up here
We especially kept the straight ones
I'll keep those
It's a mineral water
bottle from 1869 and
1870—very old It'll get a nice spot here
My grandfather bought the house around
1950 shortly after the end of World War II
He always used to take his vacations here with
his wife and their two sons
By then when were little were always here too
spending holidays with the
family—my father my mother
Now it belongs to my sister and me We spend as much time here
as we possibly
can This is simply our home
This is deeply personal to them They never
had much space but that never mattered either
This is the back area of the house
This was formerly a bedroom
We'd like to turn this into a small sleeping area
This is another bedroom
They're all quite small overall
The house is only 38 square meters in size
But we do want to put a bed
back here so you can sleep well
Then this is the hallway Up here leads to the
attic which will also
become a small living space
We're already at the bathroom up front
It's very very small
But I think we'll still manage to set this up quite nicely
Then we're already in the living area here
There will be a kitchen and a table
And maybe a small couch could fit in too
The house also includes an old photo album from earlier times
For example there's my sister and me
Here we are standing by the door with the
fishing nets just about to head down to the beach
They've taken vacations on Norderney several times
each year Many memories are tied to the house
They could only reach the attic
using a ladder There their
father used to sleep Soon a window will be installed here
so that it becomes brighter and the space can be used
Back on the mainland Five years ago Linda moved from Hamburg
to the quiet village of Dornum
She was practically set up here
The father of a friend happened
to know Irene Steffens the
shop's owner and was aware she was looking for a successor
We're now heading to the workshop with the looms
They're located on the old golf course in the attic
We'll bring the yarn there now
We always seem to have what we need over there just when we're running
low here That's just how it is—everything 's
never quite where you need it to be
The previous owner lived here and
worked as a weaver for 40 years
Irene Steffens now lives in the neighborhood Her son and daughter
-in-law have taken over the courtyard
The workshop however remains
still on the attic floor of the young family's home to this day
Hello
Brutus also wanted to say hello
Perfectly lovely
I need to focus
Then I'll move
I know I'm calm
Linda now has four employees and 21 looms which
all need to be moved to the new workshop soon
Each loom must be dismantled and
broken down into individual parts
I still don't know how we'll do it We need to document every step
Label everything precisely
Then every loom must be completely carried through the
door pushed down the entire staircase and wheeled across
And rebuilt over there
This will be adventurous
It will be demanding
We need many strong hands to help with the hauling
That’s no longer quite our style
But we can definitely pull off the buildup
Claudia Nordemann was the first apprentice in the
weaving department back then That was 40 years ago
Each loom has its own personality Sitting
at and weaving on each one feels different
Some are more stubborn
With others it feels like a hug
It goes soft and quite nicely
They all have names
This is the damask loom That's due to the
technology This is Marie
-Louise our Frenchwoman
I always call her Torture-Marie Weaving around that
is tricky That's
Knudsen Flens Mormann Rudi Mercedes
and dimple silver tooth
Linda and her colleagues
will carry on the ancient tradition of handweaving
continuing shortly elsewhere
Here in East Friesland directly on the North Sea
In Ardland Steffen and Steffi began the restoration
First the entire house had to be completely emptied
Finally today's task is the old bathtub
Ready Is
that hard
Still manageable
Uli are you ready
Yes
In 2021 they inherited the farm from Steffi's father
They had married a year earlier
Best to stay well away from the window
Just lower it down Back
up first If it falls
it'll just fall into the
garden Bend it in well
They have 350 square meters of
living space plus another 300 square
meters of training rooms Every day craftsmen now arrive at the yard
Steffi Hello
Everything okay Yeah so far so good
Shall we go in Do you need anything else
I’ve got a bag with me
Cabinets windows and window sills are crafted by cabinetmaker Karl Mayer
The masons have already been hard at work
You've already got the base plate in
there We'll make sure to measure the kitchen precisely Then
you'll have the exact dimensions
And let's take a look at the window sills—
see if that could actually be done
Sewing our own wood panels
That you tailor it appropriately
We'd really like to get them from Eicher
The large barn will soon become a training room
Steffen is a driving instructor and his wife is a nurse He wants
to teach driving students here and
she will offer first aid courses
The property also includes 43 hectares
of land of which 6 hectares are forest
The oak logs came from the estate We've felled a few of them
We've cut them into sections
They've been stored for barely two years now
That was one of the first things we did
Because they no longer had crowns
Then comes the next storm right
along with the dampness Then
they'll fly onto our roof I'
ve also added a stacking strip
That works quite well Besides the window sills made from their own oak the couple also
want a modern stylish kitchen
That was the plan we had developed
back then though not quite fully refined
It's the variant with the washstand half-sitting in front
of the window We can optimize that
You can see it clearly again here
Maybe it doesn't need to be double
just simpler That way the width will
be easier to manage This is supposed to be our cozy comfortable kitchen
We're practically moving through our household management room and
then entering the training area
here where a kitchen is also planned
But the kitchen which serves as a workspace
Here we want to draw a clear distinction
between work living space and relaxation
Steffen and Steffi have two young children aged 2 and 4
Career and private life
That's what they now want to try to bring under one roof
But we must also be able to draw the line
clearly Above all we are still parents
But it's luxury and a problem at the same time Our children have
always been at home with us But
sometimes it goes on until late at night
We can't anyway on Sunday
Steffen was a farmer a peasant sorry—wait in his first life
Sunday is just another workday
The restoration of the historic timber frame is nearly complete
Some decayed beams were repaired or replaced
Here you can see that we've secured the stand This edge here
bears the weight of the stand It 's
been cut at a 90-degree angle
And this edge here is
specially beveled to prevent
water from getting in If it had been cut like that
Otherwise you're already setting
up further damage
That 's why we're cutting it this way—so water can't get in
The work was quite extensive
The entire building was placed on a new foundation
These men are specialists
Here in Artland they have
plenty to do with the historic half-timbered barns
The Erlenhof is being
restored to perfect condition for the next 100 years
In Dornum on the North Sea the
future textile mill is getting a
new roof Work is progressing well
The municipality has the building
Recognized as particularly worthy of preservation the building
enjoys protected status and
financial support is also available
from the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau
Architect Kai Nilsson is now almost every
day on the construction site You can see
how quickly all of this is moving forward The window has already advanced again
Incredible it's happening so fast Just two weeks
ago everything was still under the old roofing
with the deteriorating roof structure of the rear building
In just two weeks we've made it this far
You would have thought this tiny plot of land
ever been able to build such a large house
Linda afterward thanks to our preservation of the existing structure
On a plot of around 300 square meters a
house with 220 square meters of usable space
was built—something that would never have been possible under the new regulations
One couldn’t have made it any smaller They need so much space especially
the large looms It won’t help at all
if you have to throw half of it away
or so tightly packed that you can't work there
It should be a pleasant workshop that's also easy to move around in
So slowly is Linda beginning to understand how everything will eventually look and
how she can work here in the future This
area will essentially be the seminar section
Here comes this new load-bearing
wall So straight
Exactly it goes in perfectly straight
Then these thick wooden joists will go on top
It's moving away
Then this will be the area
where all the looms for classes and such are kept
Linda also plans to offer seminars here later and revive
interest in handweaving It's
a wonderful project for me too
because I think handweaving is great first of all and also
great how diverse it is Since
last year handweaving has bee
on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list
In that regard it aligns well with what I do professionally
It's truly a wonderful project to be able to follow along with
Aside from the fact that it's an exciting scrap construction site here
Turning ruins into new homes
—Kai Nilsson has made
this his mission Now he's making his mark in East Friesland
Someone like a guardian of the region
Yet sustainability is always important to him as well
Everything from the existing stock that
is still usable will be put back into use
A generation before us did the same They didn't always throw
everything away or shred it all
They simply didn't have the means
In every old house you'll find countless reused
stones and beams That's not our invention either
But we're working with the old stones
already on site and don't even need
to buy additional materials from the monument service Just last weekend
They've cleaned the stones in neat stacks
Moreover the house takes on an entirely different soul
when a little more of the old is still incorporated
And right next to it the stones are immediately put back in place
The material is great in every way
Moving the stones into the container would be
worse The restoration
is gradually taking shape
Now the focus is already shifting to interior planning
To discuss this Kai Nilsson invited his clients over for tea
Hello everyone Hello
Hello
Hello darling you've prepared this so
nicely for us Great
A solid starting point for discussing the kitchen right Linda
Looks excellent
Baked specially for us
Now I was thinking here
we could set up a stove a sink and a dishwasher right here
Then I'd say stove sink dishwasher and
things like a refrigerator over here
This tea house in Nesse is relatively new
yet increasingly more people are restoring
old buildings In the past building regulations favored new construction exclusively
Meanwhile people want more and are therefore currently changing the building regulations indicating that a
shift in thinking is already underway
For example in Nesse
there's a sign for a new development area that
's been standing for three years yet nothing has been built there
No land will be purchased no house will be built There
is also a growing interest among companies in renovations
People are now relatively behind
in getting involved with renovations
Even companies that previously wouldn't have touched such a house for example
On Norderney craftsmen must hurry
When the vacation season
starts construction noise must
stop A noise protection regulation then takes effect
Slide it up a bit higher
please Now I'm sweating
That's it Excellent
Judith's sister Maren has also arrived from Munich today She 's
traveled nearly 900 kilometers just for a site inspection
The two sisters regularly make time to come
to Norderney to see how their small fisherman 's
cottage is being saved
The house has for the first time a window in the roof
Beautiful and unsettling
at the same time If you look
at the masonry and haven't been here for a few months
Then you start to worry a little that it might collapse
right away The joints had all been completely washed out
But on the other hand there's also joy
because it's always moving a little further forward
Even seven years ago there were already the first preliminary discussions
for the restoration of the Old House
Hello I hope we're not disturbing
No quite the contrary Excellent
Looks good here now
It certainly looked different before Yes exactly
The kitchen
Can we start planning the kitchen already
The exterior walls of the house are very thin
were built using only stone
The greatest concern is
if we remove these windows here now
Right now I think it's also
in the kitchen because these
are such solid frames that the masonry can withstand it
And that a few stones getting lost isn'
t a problem Because
the windows already help support the masonry to some extent They contribute to the stability
That’s why there’s already
a bit of fear involved
It ’s good we’re not there when this happens Absolutely
At certain points you can look outward from inside
Judith and Maren are eager to hear what the experts have to say
Hello
The windows will arrive within the next two weeks
The windows are already finished at the workshop
But this does not reassure contractor Jörg Vorwoldt's sister
He also sees the windows as a genuine challenge
When removing the windows we must be extremely careful
We shouldn't go hammering away at the masonry We only
have half-brick masonry here
which is already very fragile
But the joints are also crucial—they
must withstand significant stress We have
a particularly unique structure here
featuring an extremely thin exterior wall
Having to accommodate so many movements
this mortar must naturally allow for that
That's why we had this mortar reformulated—it's a
material that closely matches the historical original
It must withstand the test of time comply with heritage conservation standards
and look great From above the house already makes a strong impression
Work on the windows continues today at
the Erlenhof in Adland Most of them are
already in place There's been significant progress at the construction site
Interior fitting-out is progressing smoothly Steffen and Steffi are
still on schedule and plan to pitch
in themselves once again on this day
The old windows from the gable must come
out including whatever is still in place
Some have already been blown away because of the wind The
rest must now go as the new windows are arriving on Monday
Small windows are also present on the large attic
But he probably won't find much use for them
The skylight let in plenty of light
Yes such a wonderful space has emerged
What should we do here
We’ll host dance parties here
Tanz parties would suit both of them perfectly They like to let loose
and have a good time Steffen and Steffi
met each other at the shooting festival
and enjoy celebrating with friends neighbors and colleagues
All are also invited to the opening of their education center
But that will take some time yet
Our training room where Steffen and I can then conduct our
lessons and run our courses as
well as a space for the society
You can also rent the space We have a kitchen
with dining area office and storage here
The window sills have now been installed in her private apartment
The cabinetmaker was able to work well with the oak wood she provided
The result is impressive
You mentioned a slight worm damage already
But we think that's perfectly fine
since in the end it's still
nature Our children don't need beds at all—they sleep on the windowsill
I also love how natural it feels with little
touches everywhere making
each windowsill unique
They now also want to make parts of
the kitchen and the counter in the
training room from their oak Everything has to somehow fit the farm
Shall we lift it using the wheel loader or can we do it this way
This is a wagon wheel specifically from our family 's
wagon Back then every farm had its own wagon
That's what's left over from it
The Erlenhof is over 200 years old
Agriculture has been practiced here since ancient times
When Steffi's father passed
away in 2021 the young couple
decided to convert the farm into an educational center
First they cleared out the furniture
and stored it in a safe place
Our storage
We've stored all the furniture doors and everything
else we considered valuable right here inside
and actually want to redistribute them throughout the house as well
Not everything can be reused
but individual pieces are meant to have a future in the new home
This chest of drawers by Olga the last market of the estate
Usually Steffi comes up with the ideas and then Steffen brings them to life
The courtyard had market
and servant alike until the death of the last market
official I think there's a sense of
respect in simply honoring these traditions
So we hope we can
still turn this into a gem for our
bathroom I think just sanding
it down should do the trick
And let's take a quick look to see how it turns out
We have five bathrooms so naturally five sinks
And we figured everyone can do classic white sinks
That's why we got
river stones We need to
wash them again first Yes of course
Look at that the thing's practically disappearing in there
No I actually think it's great
It looks like it's been placed on a platter for presentation
Then you can put soap here as well
That's great listen
The wagon wheel arrives in the entrance area
Steffi plans to turn it into a lamp
At Dorm an der Nordsee the roof for the weaving mill is nearly
complete The craftsmen plan to lay the tiles in the coming days
Today the floor insulation is being
delivered A total of 36 cubic meters
This fills the entire
ground floor and is later
compacted with screed The material ensures tha
at irregularities can be easily compensated and
is considered especially environmentally friendly
Look this is foam glass gravel
It's a recycled product made from waste glass
It regulates moisture and provides thermal insulation simultaneously
This aspect is further enhanced here
And finally the foundation slab goes on top
Cool huh
It doesn't weigh anything at all
I definitely don't need to go to the gym today That's
not shoveling all day It just
works its way into my arms
Here you should take a look That big
crane up there Then they cut
open the sack The material slides
down the chute into the building
That’s insane
Linda’s mother is here today too
She’s helping out in the shop next door
That's exciting right
It feels strange
Bettina Detering and her husband support their daughter's project
At first it was admittedly a
bit adventurous Exactly a bit
adventurous But then were
optimistic thanks to Mr Nilsson
Thank you very much Dornum
will soon have another attraction
Now the painters will come followed by the looms
Work can resume on Norderney
Summer is over
So get back to the place
Today is the exciting day
The windows are to be removed
today Now we'll see whether the walls can withstand it
One must be careful not
to cause further
damage to the masonry and in this case only the window
Since it's going to be replaced anyway
Ingo Kleen and his colleagues know
they must proceed with caution
The lower window has been removed
Now it depends on whether the fall will hold
Probably not
Caution caution
That's it A history spanning
100 years built up For the installation
of the new windows Ingo Kleen now
has to tackle the thin wall once more
We're drilling through here right now
Then we'll drill a hole into the stone
here And then we'll screw a bolt in there
That's the challenge we face here
All we can do is watch what happens next
Builder Jörg Vorwold has arrived with
the first barge His
craftsmen have nearly finished installing the first window Wait a minute—move it away
Here's a lump
It's a bit crooked here too I can also lean it
a bit here The problem
is it's very crooked here
Here you can see the joint is very neat and clean
Above we have the same thing here
Below it now runs off like this
We regretfully cannot change that
We can apply a bit of pressure
But that requires some explanation
I'm squeezing in a break again now
Good I can live with that
That looks good Maren
Jörg Vorwold has expanded the old
and the installation of the new windows planned
Hi Hello
He had to take precautionary measures at certain openings
He wanted to be extra careful to prevent the house from collapsing
By replacing the new windows
We had to reinforce this drop when installing the
new windows which we did using a small steel insert
We already did that yesterday in advance
That has worked primarily here
In other words the masonry is now supporting itself again
Thus were able to remove the old windows and reinstall the new
wonderful sliding windows Yet not
all of them are fully secured yet
It remains a difficult
task The challenge
is to find a stone—any stone at all
And then finding one who doesn’t immediately fly away shatter into pieces
But that looks good Windows
and doors are custom-made
Everything should look much the same as it once did
That's the requirement set by the district administration
Jörg Vorwold knows this well
He has already restored numerous buildings that are protected as historical monuments
We also recognize these sliding windows from other historical monuments
Typically they are slightly larger
and there are still weights and pulleys there
But we don't have that in this case
because back then it was a very simple house
People who were truly poor lived here
It was made in the most basic way possible
We have revived this style preserving its
heritage-listed characteristics including the
narrow mullions and joint grooves
And of course adapted to the newer thermal standards here
using this insulated glass pane
Exterior work is thus largely complete
Now comes the interior fit-
out Soon Judith and Maren plan
to return to Norderney Then the kitchen will be assembled
The weaving mill in Dornum is
now complete externally except
for this one gable wall To bring in more light to the attic
Linda had these historic windows installed from Belgium Now the
painters are inside ensuring every
room looks bright and welcoming
The tile layer is still working in the bathrooms and toilets He
received material from Kai Nilsson
who supplied these small black tiles
what was left over from the renovation of
the stone house and she gave it to Linda
Today they’re going to measure
everything once more to make sure
it all fits So let’s take a look
I’ve just found the plans here
We've done this before
Templates Exactly
Top and bottom
It won’t be long now before the 21 looms
from the Golfhof arrive at the
new workshop in Dornum
Yes look he only goes this far—this fits perfectly
It fits exactly there
How long was it
Tall 2.10 m Well good but you'll naturally need to be able
to move around a bit too just
in case we have to fix some threads
They can't go all the way
to the wall So let's just say
2.50 meters okay That would
be roughly up to here Yes
Then you could say he goes almost all the way to the window
Yes that's good
The entire renovation took only nine months
Fast yes but also nerve-wracking
I often had sleepless nights whenever
those thunderstorms came through
I drove here on Sunday morning at
7 a m turned the corner and thought
There's just a pile left here and nothing stands anymore Because
it was only supported by pillars
That was already eerie in between
Kai is always standing outside my door
I'll really miss that when he stops ringing the bell
And then just kept looking seeing how it worked what they were doing
It's all turned out so beautifully
We chose everything very thoughtfully
and attention to detail
It makes one so happy
to see that together with countless hands something beautiful is created
On the Erlenhof in Menzlage final preparations are
underway for the opening
of the new education center
Steffen and Steffi's private living area is
nearly complete with great attention to detail
Even in the seminar rooms and with an unobstructed view into the attic
Everything is exactly as Steffi envisioned and planned
In the entrance area the electrician is just
installing the wagon wheel with the hanging lights
We'll need to move the ladder back right away
Steffen is relieved that everything will soon be
finished For him and his wife it has been a difficult time
That’s it for sure Considering how much rubble came out
here and where the screed ended up
you can’t help but think that way
Yeah it's awesome—actually you've
already accomplished almost everything But then it
drags on much longer than you'd originally think
Steffi is giving Olga's old dresser one more thorough cleaning
She's put her own touch on it here as well
When we first told the heating engineer we wanted a regular
cabinet as a base unit he gave
us such a bizarre explanation
We simply painted the surface and luckily it turned out beautifully Yet gradually
everything is coming true
That's exactly how we imagined it
And that's already something good
The lamp is hanging Is that one on already too
Very good Excellent
Steffi we still need to tie one more knot
There's a knot everywhere else except with you
Then you can open them
100 pieces
Talks can be given here as well
Let's see if you can
even sit comfortably on this chair
Not screwed in
Coffee The new kitchen in the
small seminar room has also been installed
I love the wallpaper from Rasch—that was a
great choice The French style isn't bad at all
Takes some getting used to but it's a bit of a
showstopper—perfectly complements the kitchen
Honey we still need to hang a few more pictures
Equipped with this detection device
Not that we're going to start shooting electricians in private settings
We've already been through that
They've already caused a short circuit once Now they
want to hang this large painting in the living room
Donated by a viewer of the series
We're saving our old house
Someone contacted NDR and mentioned that they
have a few older treasures
they’d like to donate
Then we drove to Hamburg then to Elmshorn and picked
up the items There were a
few things there we could use
The painting from Hamburg now has a place
of honor It immediately won their hearts
Steffen and Steffi have been working on their dream for over a year
Now they're on the home stretch
They've rearranged the living room
once again in much the same way
as it was before using the historic furniture from the container
Steffen is an avid hunter
Now he finally could hang up his collected trophies
The cozy kitchen is also
complete featuring a counter made from reclaimed oak
wood Up and down like a roller coaster
You think progress is being made then
suddenly it takes three steps backward
We all continued working as normal
despite the self-employment situation
Then Frieder was born during the construction
phase Somehow we managed it anyway
No marital crisis no divorce—hopefully even more happiness ahead
Arguments happen from time to time that's completely normal
But it's also part of it We're very much
alike in how we think It's actually brought
us even closer together
But now we've reached the end A new cathedral is about to
begin The weaving mill in Dornum receives its looms today
The furniture vans have been in operation since early morning
For Linda it's a long-awaited day
Yet now she can't take part
She is ill and must not carry heavy loads
Extremely difficult Because it constantly tickles your fingertips And
yourself know
exactly how you'd want it done
You really have to be clear and say "Could you please
do this that needs to go there can he do
that " It's genuinely difficult
But Linda has over twenty helpers with her today—friends family
colleagues They disassemble each
loom individually in the Kohlhof first
and then back up here again
We don’t have any screws—everything is just assembled together
And accordingly since the wood is already old and warped
It must be reassembled at the same angle
That's the difficulty
Since every loom has a name the individual parts
are likewise labeled so
nothing can really go wrong
At the Steffens family's golf course in Damspolder an era comes
to a close today and Linda's father
Klaus is helping with the move
The furniture trucks are making 21 trips today each
carrying just one single loom to ensure nothing gets mixed up
Webstuhl Rudi has just left his old homeland
The field on the attic floor gradually clears
Irene Steffens the previous owner is in charge of overseeing everything here
She once built this entire operation
up and ran the weaving mill for 40 years
But this one is already a hurdle
I apprenticed in weaving and became a master
training numerous apprentices right here
It's not something you can easily brush off This
one is the most demanding part of the entire story
But it's good when you give it to someone you care about
Irene Steffens is 71 years old and
began hand weaving in the mid-1970s
On this attic
She has taught weaving to a total of 5 apprentices
With the transport of the looms to Dornum
A significant chapter in her life is coming to an end
And for Linda a new one begins
Oh that's your Rudi
Yes exactly Perfect
He must go down here
Rudi needs to go to this left side He has to be here
or here We can switch with
Mercedes it doesn't matter
Today Linda's dream comes true
We've been planning for years that the looms should go to Dornum
I've been here for five years now
For the past four years we've been wondering where we could possibly take them
It took us a long time to decide on building a detached
house Today that effort has yielded results after four years
It took so long to get there
Looks pretty cool doesn't it
Purely a design element
When I need garn and head
up boom I need that that
With a shopping basket like that you
can go up and down the stairs That was the idea
That's why we did it instead of having Linda put the shelf there
This will be the neatest weaving in the world
The Yarn-Shopping Staircase
The move goes smoothly even without Linda just like
clockwork By noon nearly all the looms are in place
Time for a boost
It's done
With countless hands as Linda puts it
In the end she has just one wish left
For the coming weeks to bring
some order to the chaos for
the years ahead that many
people continue to find joy here
and always welcome to come weaving
Soon there will be classes here
Linda plans to offer tours
and spend plenty of time at the loom
Things have also changed on Norderney by now
Is this the color
This is the color
This is how the final coat should look
Here we've been watching
at we maintain the visibility of the old stones
through the paving layout
creating a pleasing texture
Feels great doesn't it Because
the house is so fragile it
needs to be protected—especially right here on the island
The color can effectively
hold back driving rain On the other
hand it can also trap moisture already present in the masonry
and also seemingly diffuses
out from within beautifully
released—this is something we've also understood
at the paint applied was harmful to the house because
it was such a thick layer of plastic or plastic coating
And that moisture can remain behind
which isn't good for the masonry
Work inside is progressing
too The tile installer
is making sure the kitchen will be ready soon
The only thing missing here are the furnishings
This will be the central space of the house
Yes come on in then
A former friend from vacation
days dropped by unexpectedly I
’ve already done a bit of work This is where I used to sleep
That's insane when you see it—so tiny
You can 't even imagine a bed ever having stood there
We weren't allowed to do that here before
The spirits were always there after all
I think they've moved out by now
The dark attic has now become a bright room
Insane how bright it is now
And the fact that you can actually stand here
Finally just in the middle—but it’s enough
The two sisters used to play together often
during vacations with Christina Herbold
Meanwhile her girlfriend lives on
Norderney and works here as a social worker
Wow
She's almost finished
Yes beautifully done
Watch out big deal
They found them here underneath
the floor That's awesome right
Yeah really nice
Great you could use those as decor couldn't you
Absolutely Judith and Maren
are almost at the finish line
I have the feeling it feels bigger once you step inside
That really can't be the case though But yes it' s
enough for us It's small
but very well laid out
That's why it's quite suitable for families to live
here We've even stayed here with ten people before
That's not how it is it worked out
somehow And now the attic is even bigger
Six years ago Kai Neuling from the Monuments Department
inspected the house laying
the foundation for its rescue
It's simply wonderful that it's now being restored and can once again
be used that it will be preserved
That's truly a very important matter
The building is being used so it can be preserved I'm truly happy about
that especially since the building
is now moving into a promising future
Want to come in There's a glass of
champagne here Hello
This summer the house should finally be complete
Judith and Maren have already planned their vacation but
they also want to rent out to holiday guests in the future
The two sisters have poured their hearts into
ensuring that Height 13 remains on Norderney
Cheers are also being raised today at the Erlenhof in Ardland
The education center founded by Steffen and Steffi
is on the verge of its official opening
They had originally planned to have Christmas ready
Now it's become spring
Steffi thought of everything on this day as well
Grand opening at last It's
finally here We actually managed to pull
it off after all We're expecting a few guests
I honestly don’t even know exactly how many
there will be That’s hard to define for us
It's going to be a great event We're making it happen now Everything
is proceeding as planned It will be
fine anyway but that doesn't matter
Sausage and beer always go hand in hand
whenever there's a celebration in Menslage
Happy birthday Congratulations
Congratulations Thank you so much for the invitation
Today is a very special day for Steffi
We've been involved for four years now and have held some stones in our hands
What began with sorrow should continue with joy
In 2021 we stood here
gathering ideas and forging plans Good heavens in heaven
That's part of it
It's finally ready We're grateful to have you
Steffen and Steffi they knew exactly what they wanted
And they achieved it
How does it work You take the top I'll handle the bottom
The Schulte Education Center in Holsten Menslage has opened
Soon the first seminar participants are expected to arrive
On the historic half-timbered courtyard in Artland
