If I asked you right now which
profession do you think is the most stressful in the
world You might think
of surgeon Air traffic controller
Or racing against the boss's deadline
No way—this is the most stressful job
with the highest risks And with the heaviest KPIs it's truly being the king
Just imagine—dawn breaks with urgent military reports before the morning meal
even ends and by nightfall you're already worrying about repelling foreign invaders
One little mistake and your head’s gone as if it
were nothing That’s why throughout history princes often had to fight each other
Fighting fiercely only after bruising each other's heads and breaking their bones did they finally climb onto that
lofty chair Yet our Vietnamese history has an extremely unusual case
A king I'll temporarily call Saint Lai
or to put it in Gen Z slang
Now a healing-class player fate forces them to become a leader despite their reluctance
The only person in history to run away from home to go to prison only to be dragged back by his father and made king
Even someone locked in a fierce battle enduring scorching heat and
raging fire against the enemy can still fall into a deep peaceful sleep
Yes no one else—this is none other than Emperor Buddha Trần Nhân Tông
Today we won't dwell on dry dusty history books anymore

entertaining and supremely great monarch in the nation's history

Done Good
Fasten your seatbelts
The time machine is departing now
Let's turn back the clock to the year 1258
At this time the Đại Việt kingdom had just triumphed over the
Mongol forces in their first invasion and a spirit of jubilation filled the land
And on the eleventh day of the eleventh lunar month that
year the empress gave birth to a prince named Tran Kham
From the moment of his birth Tran Kham was unlike any ordinary child
Historical records state that
He was born with a divine countenance his skin radiant and golden like molten gold The king Trần
Thánh Tông gazed upon his son and was struck by his extraordinary brilliance and striking beauty
Known specially as the Golden Buddha or Golden Buddha he was born in Vach
Dích his father a king and his family a prominent one in the city's elite
And he's also strikingly handsome and radiantly charming According to the typical script of a Chinese palace intrigue drama
Trần Khâm should have been a carefree prince indulging
in pleasures or perhaps a power-hungry schemer
Day and night scheming and plotting to secure the position of crown prince
But no
Tran Kham was a completely different ideology
Growing up in luxury Tran Khanh still suffered
from social anxiety and an allergy to power
He's a true introvert—quiet and reserved by
nature But when it comes to fighting battles he's utterly extroverted
Rather than enjoying banquets and beautiful concubines His greatest
passion was visiting temples and
studying Buddhist teachings Just imagine
while the other princes were busy practicing horseback riding
and archery flirting with young ladies from noble families
en our Tran Khâm sits quietly in his room lost in
deep thought about life's
philosophy about the universe
Who am I and where exactly am I Why must we
fight over this cramped overcrowded throne
Emperor Trần Thánh Tông was greatly
pleased to see his son was intelligent
and kind-hearted and also possessed an extraordinary countenance
He's decided this guy is definitely
destined to become king—there's no escaping it At
the age of sixteen during the reign of Tran Kham
The king designated him as crown prince
For others this was earth-shattering good news
a lifelong dream
But to Chen Kin this was nothing
short of a blatant injustice Suddenly out of
nowhere he just wanted to live a quiet
life basking in the peaceful evenings
In the morning drinking tea in the afternoon watching clouds drift by—now suddenly forced to
wear the heavy yoke of national responsibility around my neck Your Majesty has pleaded with Your father the king on many occasions
Dad maybe you should
let me take over instead I just
want to become a monk I don’t want to be king it’s too much pressure
He's far too high-ranking for a mere P I
But of course King Trần Thánh Tông would never
agree— you're the eldest son exceptionally capable
and if you don't take on the task who will
Whoever does it no arguing allowed Cornered
with no way out the 16-year-
old youth Tran Kham made the fateful
decision to do something unthinkable
a move later dubbed by the youth as
"abandoning the city for the forest
" On a cool night taking advantage
of the guardian's momentary lapse
The crown prince Tran Khâm had climbed over the
palace wall to escape Where
did he intend to go He planned
to go to Yen Tu Mountain to become a monk
You have to understand that traveling on foot from
the ancient capital of Thăng Long to Mount Yên Tử
in Quảng Ninh back then meant traversing roads
entirely through sacred forests and treacherous waters
You can't just hop on a sleeper
bus and expect to
arrive anywhere Yet that scholarly prince dared to travel alone
Head to the Pagoda on Mount Dongjiu
So exhausted he stopped by to ask for a small hat By
the time he arrived at the temple it was already daylight
Your appearance is far too
extraordinary your aura radiating unmistakably The temple abbot upon
seeing you was utterly startled
He immediately sensed this wasn't an ordinary person and hurriedly served him proper food
and drink While
Chen Kin was eagerly thinking tha
The escape had just succeeded and he was about to savor
a life of freedom when in the
capital city of Thăng Long
The emperor father Trần Thánh Tông was
thrown into a frenzy Early in the
morning upon finding the crown prince missing he was utterly alarmed and distraught
The entire court was
thrown into turmoil Emperor Trần Thánh Tông immediately
dispatched soldiers to search everywhere
Eventually they found Trần Khâm
Currently located at Dongjiu Mountain
And then a historic conversation took
place which I respectfully permit myself to
Rewrite it in a modern style for easier visualization King Trần Thánh Tông was
panting and scolding fiercely
Good heavens What in the world You reckless fool Just when everything was
calm where did you run off to Don’t you know
the entire court is in chaos because of you
Hurry back
Chen Kin looked gloomy
But Father I already told you I don't want to be king
I only want to live an ordinary life simply
cultivating and attaining enlightenment Please
let me stay here Father Emperor Trần Thánh
Tông was gentle and wise clear and composed
Manipulating emotions won't work
My child I'm getting old and need someone to carry on the family legacy
How could you possibly abandon your father
How can you leave the people to
wander aimlessly Your duty is to
your homeland You can't just
walk away whenever you want Now be good
Go ahead
Then Dad will give it
Get married
Facing a dilemma with no clear way forward
Seeing his father laboring tirelessly in his search and reflecting on
his duty to the nation Tran Kham had
no choice but to wipe away his tears
Farewell to the dream of a wandering traveler
Quietly following my father back to the capital city
True indeed—what heaven takes away it gives to the mind's disdain
Those who crave power are nowhere to
be found Those who hold power in their
hands merely wish to discard it Yet precisely this failed attempt to flee—
It was a crucial foundation
that later shaped Trần
Nhân Tông's remarkably unique approach to kingship
Ruling as if not ruling at all In
a palace of gold and jade the heart remains free and unburdened as if
wandering amidst mountains and forests
And you know what Right after he
was arrested to make
absolutely sure his son wouldn't escape again King Trần Thánh Tông forced Trần Khâm
He must marry immediately and the bride is
none other than Princess Quyên Thanh who would
later become the Empress Khâm Từ
Thus the young man Tran Khanh's ambitious
plan to become a monk and start a
business officially crashes in Episode 1
Reluctantly he takes his seat as emperor
adopted the era name Xianbao
But the story had only just begun
A reluctant king
a man uninterested in power
How will he govern the nation Will
he ruin the country's great cause Or
is it precisely this act of letting go that holds the answer
What made them achieve such
miraculous feats that terrified
the Mongol Yuan forces Let's eagerly await the next chapter
In chapter 2 see how youth
Chen Kun wreaks havoc
on the imperial court after being made king
It's going to be incredibly surprising
In the previous section we witnessed
the crown prince Tran Khâm
the future Emperor Tran Nhan Tong
Attempted an escape by becoming
a monk but utterly failed
—caught red-handed by his jealous parents on the spot
Dragged back to the palace forced to
marry and seated on the throne Tran
Kham officially became the leader
of the Dai Viet conglomerate in 1278
He was only twenty years old then
Now try putting yourself in
his shoes You are a person
I cherish peace I love meditation—just wanting
my mind to remain still amidst life's endless
changes—yet suddenly out of nowhere I'm
forced to sit on the hottest seat in the world
To make matters worse beyond our
borders the ruthless enforcer
of the Mongol Empire was eyeing our land with greedy eyes
bullet-shaped form the desire to
surrender at any moment to death and Great
Viet Pressure Too much pressure If
anyone else they'd surely be depressed
or simply let life go and ignore the world
But Tran Nhan Tong was different
He proved to the entire world that
I have no desire to be king yet
Once I take action the other
kings will be left trailing
in my dust The management style of Trần Nhân Tông could
contained in just two words
The first aspect is personnel
recruitment Typically feudal
dynasties placed great emphasis o
A son must achieve the highest imperial examination rank—
either as a zhuangyuan or bangyan—to be entrusted with important
duties The Tran dynasty was renowned for its rule requiring
marriages within the same clan to preserve royal bloodlines
Power often concentrated in the hands of
the Trân family but Emperor Trần Nhân Tông
and his father Emperor Trần Thánh Tông
possessed a remarkably forward-thinking mindset
extremely open-minded he didn't care whether you came from a
background as a farmer fisherman
or coal seller as long as you were
True talent combined with a sense of responsibility The most
exemplary case is the story of
the renowned general Pham Ngũ Lao
He was born a peasant his family
so poor that they barely had
enough to eat The legend says that
one day Pham Ngũ Lão was sitting
basket of woven bamboo in the middle of the road mind preoccupied
with military strategy or drifting
off wondering what to eat for lunch
As the army of General Hưng Đạo Trần Quốc Tuấn passed
by the soldiers shouted
loudly in unison Hey young man
Make way for the approaching vehicle
But Pham Ngũ Lão remained seated
unmoving as a statue Furious
A soldier stabbed him in the
thigh with a spear to
wake him up Blood flowed freely yet he remained unconscious
Nothing at all It wasn't until Tran Quoc Tuan arrived and asked
about it that he learned the truth—that this young man had
been so deeply absorbed in contemplating the fate of the
nation that he had completely lost awareness of his surroundings
Lost contact with the real master Seeing the talented individual Tran Quoc
Tuan promptly recommended him to the imperial
court If he had encountered a different king—
He might have been fined
by now for obstructing
traffic but Tran Nhan Tong was different
He gave a sharp nod immediately
naming Pham Ngũ Lão to the
starting lineup And in fact the results proved this to be
one of the most successful
transfer deals in history
as Pham Ngũ Lão became a terror to the Yuan forces
Later on Second Tran Nhan
Tong was a master of the art of
public consultation We are living
in the 21st century a time whe
but democracy is now taken for granted
Yet in the 13th century
the king was the Son of Heaven a divine figure
his words were sacred edicts
To argue is to vanish
into thin air Yet Tran
Nhan Tong did things
never seen before In 1282
The situation was as tense as a tightly strung string
The Mongol Yuan army sent a formal letter demanding passage to attack Champa
In truth it was merely a pretext to seize Đại Việt while
having the chance Trần Nhân
Tông fully understood this scheme
They held a peace conference
This was a gathering for the feudal lords
military commanders in other words a meeting
by the board of directors and strategic shareholders Here
everyone discusses battle
strategies And it is also here tha
A viral event occurred throughout history
The legend of the crushed orange
the story goes that a young man named Tran Quoc Toan
Young gifted and full of
fiery determination to join the fight against
the enemy yet too young—under eighteen
—unqualified to sign as a citizen
Since the labor contract had not yet been finalized King
Trần Nhân Tông did not allow him to attend
the Vietnamese military meeting The king observed that his young nephew already possessed remarkable intelligence and spirit
Comfort him by giving him
an orange and saying "Go
home now dear Adults are
meeting here—go study at home "
Trần Quốc Toàn was so frustrated he kept muttering to himself as he walked thinking I'm this talented yet
my uncle won't let me show off
Rage flared up in an instant
his hand crushing the orange so hard he didn't even notice
What does this story reveal
It reveals that Tran Nhan Tong
extremely understanding hesitant to scold or punish Chen Guotuan for
causing a disturbance instead
treating him with remarkable gentleness
rue to the essence of a big brother in the family
It was precisely this skillful demeanor
that inspired patriotic spirit
for the youth of that era yet
the pinnacle The event that
forged a legacy the most beloved
democratic king in history
must have been the Dien Hong
Conference held in the year 1284 At
that time 500 000 Mongol Yuan
troops a formidable military force
e most powerful empire in the
world at the time had reached
the border and the enemy was as fierce as a raging storm
Within the court voices began to emerge fearful and eager to
seek peace just to hold onto their positions while Trần
Nhân Tông stood before them
A matter
of life and death To fight or to surrender
Surrender means losing the nation to slavery
fighting is like throwing eggs at stones
an extremely high risk
Instead of deciding alone in the cold chamber Tran Nhan
Tong did something shocking—he summoned the
elder statesmen the venerable elders
e most trusted representative of the people
nationwide came to Thang Long Citadel to
seek their opinions Picture this
the king summoned the people to a gathering
Not to debate the order but
to ask—elders with the enemy so
strong what do you think:
should we fight or seek peace
This is nothing short of a nationwide
live-streamed voting event Your
Majesty grasps a profoundly deep truth:
no matter how skilled a king may be
No matter how talented a general may be if the people are not
behind him he will be discarded
The strength of the dynasty lies
Right among those very farmers with mud-caked feet and hands
And in unison the answer rang out
that day in the Điện Biên Phủ Valley
Has become legend Strike
strike strike—the sound
of the lake has amplified their power by 10 000%
Trần Nhân Tông knew that
behind him was not merely a
throne but an entire nation
ready to bleed to the last drop
He activated the people's
united front the ultimate weapon
of destruction that the Mongol Yuan forces never possessed
After the conference the entire nation was ablaze with revolutionary fervor
Soldiers simultaneously tattooed the
words "kill the invaders" onto their arms
It meant killing the Mongol
invaders From the king to the common people
from the elderly to the young all gazed in one direction
It could be said that Trần Nhân Tông did
not rule through authority and fear
but through understanding
with profound respect and extraordinary
ability to unite hearts he transformed
the entire nation into a single
inseparable entity an invincible collective
But preparing mentally is one thing facing
actual combat is entirely another Whether a
king with an artistic soul can truly
rise to the challenge remains to be seen
Wishing to go to prison yet living in
ease and comfort like Tran Nhan Tong how would he lead his troops into battle
when facing the hooves of enemy horses
The destruction of the Yuan army
Could it be that you just commanded a
battle and composed poetry at the same
time Or perhaps you were calmly asleep
Whether the enemy's siege is real or
just hot air Secrets
behind the military art of striking while soothing
The secret behind Trần Nhân Tông's unique fighting style and strategy
will be revealed in the next episode guaranteed to
leave you stunned with wide-eyed amazement
Their mouths dropped open in astonishment
at how ridiculously outdated the elders from the past were
We've seen him activate the nationwide
unity campaign through a special
red conference now at this school we'
ll dive into practical implementation
And I must warn you in
advance: the fighting style of
King Trần Nhân Tông is unlike anyone in the textbooks
It's not about military
strategy it's the perfect blend of a pro
gamer's cool head and a calm heart
of those who have been imprisoned Before any physical contact—
what internet slang refers to as
physical touching—Trần Nhân Tông
There have been verbal showdowns—
diplomatic battles—that infuriated opponents
so much they were driven to extremes You all need to understand this
He was exceedingly arrogant at the time He arrogantly believed
himself to be the ruler of the
world constantly sending letters
sent an envoy to Đại Việt with outrageous and unreasonable
demands insisting that the king
of Trần must personally pay homage
That means sending people as
hostages We had to hand over gold
silver jewels and even skilled
doctors and craftsmen to them
When facing a weaker king from another
country he would surely have packed
his bags and hurried to pay homage
but Trần Nhân Tông did not He applied
and the young deer Each time an envoy from the Yuan dynasty arrived
to demand tribute Tran Nhan Tong
always welcomed them with great warmth
Grand feasting and revelry wine and meat in abundance
But as soon as the subject of passing on comes up
he suddenly becomes evasive
Cao is ill You wrote back in a hurried scattered
script: "Dear I really wish I could come visit you too "
But my health is poor—I have vertigo—so I can'
t travel far Please
understand I'm really sorry
After reading the letter he must be furious What kind of illness is
this that won't go away What kind
of illness allows him to keep hunting
Still commanding the army in silence
Knowing the King Trần was lying
yet powerless to act—because the
letter's words were far too gentle
Too polite to be faulted—this
is the art of diplomacy the soft
yet firm approach or in plain terms
a smile that hides a firm grip
There is even a legend that when the Yuan
dynasty's envoy Xai Thung arrived in our country he
displayed an arrogant attitude
Riding in with arrogant swagger utterly
unbothered he charged straight through the palace gate without so
much as dismounting Guards tried to stop him
Then he whipped the guard's face
When encountering an irritable
person he'd poke them sharply But
Tran Nhan Tong remained calm
He invited him to join the feast
At the banquet to correct
his arrogance He had him
artistic performances of fake water and ca trù yet
embedded with biting satirical
details about the invader
The messenger found the sound unbearable to hear the sight
unbearable to look at yet he continued eating his meal
That's called subtly provoking with style
yet the tree wants to sink while the
wind refuses to cease Fleeing
in panic after numerous times being caught off guard
It was decided to send
troops to launch a second
invasion of Đại Việt in 1285
and a third invasion in 1287
This is when Trần Nhân Tông
demonstrated the resolve of a Zen king on the battlefield Typically when half
a million enemy troops surged in
The leader would be frantic
unable to eat or sleep But Tran
Nhan Tong was truly asleep There
is a famously well-known story
at distinctive quality of his was evident
during the second resistance war against the
Yuan forces at that time the enemy's
strength was as overwhelming as a bursting dam
Our forces had to carry out a strategic withdrawal
from the capital Thang Long
in order to
preserve our strength The situation was perilously tense hanging
by a thread The Yuan army pursued closely behind
King Tran Xuay's fleet sailed down the Thien Mac River
Everyone on board was tense
gripping their weapons tightly
Weapons in hand eyes scanning front and back
Only King Trần Nhân Tông however
was sound asleep snoring loudly
The prow of the boat A royal guard named Doan Nhai noticed
the king was sleeping so deeply Meanwhile
the enemy was closing in from behind
Daring touch the king and wake him he said "Your Majesty the enemy
is at the gates—how can Your Majesty
still be sleeping at a time like this "
Trần Nhân Tông awoke stretched
lazily smiled and said
in essence "When the enemy
comes we fight—why worry "
When the heart is agitated one has already
lost before the battle begins Then General Ung
Dung calmly raised the signal directing his
troops to withdraw in orderly and safe fashion
Absolutely That sleep comes at a high price folks It's not
the sleep of one without worries—it's
the sleep of deliberate stillness
The calm of a master who has
seen through the chessboard
of fate When soldiers see their king still eating well
Sleep well—they'll think the bet's
settled Staying calm like that clearly
means you've got something hot up your
sleeve a solid plan already in motion
Thus the soldiers' spirit remains as
steadfast as rock This is known as leading
through aura And the strategy employed
by Trần Nhân Tông together with Hưng
General Tran Quoc Tuan's tactic was nothing short of a
masterstroke of historical
ghosting—empty fields deserted homes
military When the Mongol Yuan forces
the fearsome Hùng Hổ
marched into Thang Long they gloated over the riches they would plunder—gold silver and grain
But no Before them lay a
desolate metropolis silent as a deserted temple
devoid of any human presence not
even a single grain of rice Even so
Even chickens pigs dogs and cats
were evacuated All safely escaped
The young man dazed and disoriented
stumbled into the palace
Wait Where did everyone go
How can you fight
when there's no opponent in sight Taking over an empty city like this
It meant nothing at all The Yuan army grew
increasingly depressed the longer they stayed
Supplies ran out the weather turned scorching
their noses burned and disease spread
The disease raged on They went from a state of aggression
to confusion then collapse By
the time the enemy grew weary
First when the situation was most dire Trần Nhân Tông rallied
the entire army for a counterattack At
that moment he emerged from meditation
The gentle scholar transformed
into a true warrior Battles
such as Han Tu Trung Duong Tay Ket and Van Kiet followed
ad taken place in a flash and with great force scattering the Yuan army
like birds in flight
but what truly distinguished Trầ
What made Renzong a great figure was not
only his military prowess but also how he
treated defeated enemies Typically when a
general from the enemy army was captured
She must behead the woman to eliminate hatred
But Tran Nhan Tong
acted with extraordinary humanity or
to put it in gaming terms showed respect
enemy commanders or when we captured the enemy's
secret correspondence boxes
containing certain documents
When the domestic officials secretly sent supplies to the
enemy in hopes of surrender what did Trần Nhân Tông do
Regarding prisoners of war He issued an order
They were not to be turned back but
instead were supplied with horses and provisions
to return home This move frightened the Yuan forces
Respectful they called Him the
Buddha King—even before He had
been imprisoned As for the mailbox
of traitors after the victory—
Instead of opening it to see who the
traitor was so he could punish them he
ordered his men to burn the entire chest
of letters before the court officials
military and civil affairs Why did Your Excellency act that way
You essentially said that
when the enemy is strong who wouldn't
fear death Human hearts are unsettled
It's a common occurrence now that the
month has passed hatred should be set aside
so everyone can calmly work toward building
the nation This move by Trần Nhân Tông
Indeed His Majesty's resolve was absolute
With just a single spark He erased all
doubt and every fear in the hearts of
the officials who had once been hesitant
Respect grew even more deepening
their loyalty to Him After
concluding the two resistance wars against the Mongols
Trần Nhân Tông not only defended the homeland but also taught the invaders a lesson in
the strength of a small nation
but he had presence He proved that you don't need
to force yourself to seem
dangerous Just stay calm
Just keep going keep living with kindness
and the heavens will surely arrange
things No it's precisely then that you'll
gain the clarity needed to turn the tide
But the story of Trần Nhân Tông's
life was far from over here After
pacifying the realm and securing the
peaceful land of Đại Việt the Emperor
once again stunning the
world with the boldest
decision of his life—abdicating the throne whe
At the height of his power he left his
position to become a travel enthusiast and
founder of a new conglomerate What is
this conglomerate And what is its purpose
What did his legendary journeys to the distant
land of Champa leave behind
for future generations
Stay tuned for chapter 4 promising even more
explosive twists ahead
In the previous chapter
We have seen how greatly he was
needed shattering the enemy's
dreams and securing peace for the
nation Typically after establishing
With such glorious achievements what would the kings do
Surely they would sit back and
enjoy the fruits of victory
build a few more palaces recruit a few hundred more beauties into
the harem and then indulge in endless
feasts every day to drown out the sorrows
Suffering through days of hardship and tasting bitterness—wasn't that the
truth But Tran Nhan Tong was
different He always took his own unique path one that set him apart
No one can ever predict what he'll do next
In the year 1293
with the nation free of foreign troops
and the economy beginning to recover
Trần Nhân Tông unexpectedly submitted
a request for early retirement
At the time he was only 35 years
old You didn't hear that wrong
Thirty-five years old—the age at which modern men today are still
struggling with mortgage payments
anxiously searching for stability
In terms of his career Trần Nhân
Tông had reached the pinnacle of fame
and decided "Enough—ruling as king for
fifteen years is enough I'm tired "
Step aside for someone else to take over He abdicated
the throne in favor of his son Trần Anh Tông
and then became Grand Emperor Emeritus
But don't think the Great Emperor was merely sitting in the palace waving his five
fingers from behind the scenes Tran Nhan Tong withdrew
to the shadows stepping back from the forefront
serving as a senior strategic
advisor He personally trained the young king
mentoring the heir apparent with careful guidance
arsh real-life lessons not just
sitting around reading sacred
texts once the son had grown sufficiently strong and capable
He could now run the Đại Việt
conglomerate on his own so Trần
Nhân Tông officially activated the mode: pack his bag and go
He became a true backpacker
But He doesn't travel like
posing for selfies at fancy five-star resorts
He hikes
leaning on a bamboo staff wearing coarse cotton robes climbing mountain passes and
wading through streams to reach the most remote corners of the
nation visiting villagers to learn about their lives
The circumstances and the fateful journey
The journey that completely transformed
the map of Vietnam was the journey
vaded the neighboring kingdom of Champa then
known as Old Champa in
the year 1301 At that time
Champa was a powerful kingdom in the south boasting a vibrant culture and serving
as both a partner and rival
One of the oldest temples in Đại Việt What
was Trần Nhân Tông doing there Traveling for
spiritual pilgrimage Engaging in cultural exchange
Or simply escaping the scorching summer heat
of the North Actually this was a high-level
diplomatic mission
disguised as a leisure trip
The king of Champa at the time Chế Mân was overjoyed to hear that his
northern brother-in-law was coming to visit and warmly welcomed him
warm and festive celebrations lasting for several months
During those carefree days of revelry
and dancing in a foreign land Tran Nhan
Tông saw a golden opportunity He
recognized Chế Mân as a capable
heroic king and most importantly
one who had not yet been subdued
There was an official empress
from Đại Việt With the眼光 of a
great strategist Trần Nhân Tông sealed a strategic alliance
what history calls a political marriage—today's internet
users refer to as a multi-
million-dollar deal He promised
He married his daughter Diệu
a princess to Chế Mân Hearing
this many readers might think "
Oh no not another cliché plot "
Beauty trap again abandoning the child in the marketplace—
poor princess how tragic Indeed
in ancient times many scholars
The feudal lords severely criticized
Trần Nhân Tông accusing him of greed for
gold abandoning virtue and selling his
daughter to outsiders But let us remain calm
Let's analyze this: this isn't a
slave trade It's a marriage alliance
between the two most powerful
families in Southeast Asia at the time
At that time Princess Huyền Trân
would go there to become queen
the esteemed ruler of a nation
not to serve as a mere concubine
And more importantly the wedding
gift that Chế Mân offered
to bring her home was not gold silver or diamonds but something far greater
Supreme vehicle The festival that year was
two continents: Europe and Lý These two
continents corresponded to the land area
stretching from south of Quảng Trị to Thừa Thiên
Today's Huế A beautiful stretch
of central Vietnam with mountains
rivers and the sea A strategically
vital location Let us make a
It's a simple calculation
really To expand their territory
dynasties typically had to do what Send their armies out
Seize territory But what about war It costs money it wastes
resources and worst of all it
costs the lives of countless people
civilian soldiers Over here Emperor Trần Nhân Tông achieved
victory without spending a single
arrow or shedding a drop of blood
It takes just one girl yet she becomes
a noble lady in that place trading a
single life for a thousand miles of
imperial splendor and silk This is truly
It was a landmark merger and acquisition
in the history of the MNR the pinnacle
of its era Tran Nhan Tong achieved
it through the power of soft influence
achieved what military might could not
accomplish in decades As
for Princess Huyền Trân
The sorrow she evoked was
romanticized into melancholic
verses yet fair to say
she was a great woman
She sacrificed her personal happiness if
any for the sake of lasting peace between
the two nations and the expansion of the
country's territory She truly deserves it
renowned as an exceptional diplomat rather than merely a
victim of feudal rule After
successfully securing the deal
This transaction officially extended the map of Đại Việt by another
stretch The prestige of Senior Emperor
Trần Nhân Tông rose even further
The situation escalated rapidly The people admired
His profound foresight But
once it was all completed
With the nation's affairs settled from quelling internal strife to expanding
maritime power Tran Nhan Tong felt the
mission of his earthly life had been fulfilled
Completed The throne of
power fame wealth—everything
now is but a cloak a
burden that hinders Him
e path to liberation This is the moment when He
decides to finally fulfill the dream that once
tied him in youth The dream
but at the age of sixteen He had once hung
up His robes to go on a spiritual journey yet
His father did not bring Him back—this was the
path of monastic life However Tran Nhan Tong
Becoming a monk is not like the life of
an ordinary person He does not retreat
into some ancient temple to merely chant
scriptures and toll the bell day after day
He ascended Mount Yên Tử donning the saffron robe
yet initiated a revolution
within Buddhist circles
He did not merely transmit the
scriptures of China or India instead he
founded a school of Zen deeply rooted
in Vietnamese identity dedicated to
For the Vietnamese people
this is the Truc Lam Yen Tu Zen
sect What makes this sect special
Why do people refer to it as
Trần Nhân Tông was a Buddha King a royal
monk and the teaching was
that one must find joy in practice—dwelling in the world while remaining joyful in the Dharma
What makes His teachings so fascinating
that even Gen Z today should still
learn from them Let's climb Mount Yên
Tử together and explore those bygone days
In his final days he passed away with
profound peace and remarkable dignity a truly noble
end that shines through in chapter 5—guaranteed to leave a lasting impression
So many powerful
healing lessons here for anyone feeling stressed
out by deadlines
Welcome back to the journey of *
The Life-Refining Tree of Emperor
Buddha Tran Nhan Tong* If the previous four chapters were about
we have seen Him in the
role of an introverted prince
a clumsy king a military
genius and a skilled diplomat
deception but in this chapter
we shall witness His final form
the most perfect manifestation
yet—a true master of meditation
according to startup language
the founder Kim Xeo of Vietnam's
largest Buddhist organization Truc
Lam Yen Tu says the story begins
In August 1299 At this time Trần
Nhân Tông was 41 years old After
attending to state affairs and
arranging marriages for his daughters
For his daughter he nurtured her with care
for his son he shaped him into a man That was His decision
Well then time to quit this mundane game I've
cleared it—now it's time to move on to the next level
spiritual journey He officially departed
from the bustling capital of Thăng Long the
thriving metropolis and headed straight
up the mountains of Yên Tử in Quảng Ninh He
Dressed in a coarse brown hemp robe he adopted
the dharma name Xiang Yun
Da Tou Tu Hearing this
The name Thôi already exudes a carefree drifting quality like
wind and clouds But don't think
that Trần Nhân Tông became a monk
It's not about running away from life
to find a quiet corner to be alone in
silence That's a big mistake With your
energetic nature and a head full of stones
a former emperor who became a monk
in order to launch a cultural revolution
Before his time Buddhism
in Vietnam was quite fragmented
Some follow the stream of the Tathāgata's
teachings others the flow of non-duality some tread
the path of cultivation In short it's powerful—
each person practices according to their own way
Each person has their own card
just as the mobile phone market has
too many different operating systems Tran Nhan Tong observed tha
Then you say no way Our Vietnamese people
must have a unique identity Why keep
copying and pasting from foreign countries
forever That's when he made his decision
Channel all cash flows back
Extract the purest essence
Eliminate all superstitious illusions and falsehoods
merged into a single unified cash flow bearing the Made in
Vietnam brand—this is precisely
the money from Truc Lam Yen Tu
This can be regarded as the greatest corporate merger in the history
of the nation's religion with Tran
Nhan Tong becoming its founding abbot
at is the founding chairman
So what sets it apart
its unique selling proposition the distinctive sales advantage
of this school of meditation is what
at captivated people back then and remains popular to this day—
this is none other than the
philosophy of living with Tran Lac Dao
Loosely translated into modern Vietnamese
is "finding joy in life's journey " Or
using the language of today's youth "a
constant presence amidst the flow of life "
Endless changes yet the hand still works and
the jaw still chews In the past people always
thought going to prison meant enduring hardship
retreating deep into remote forests and mountains
Eating greens shunning worldly
affairs viewing life with weary
eyes—yet Trần Nhân Tông said
this wasn't necessary He said
e belief that you don't need
to shave your head or go to the
mountains to be
imprisoned—you can
be a king a general a doctor or a
The student is racing against a deadline
As long as you live with kindness fulfill your responsibilities
keep your conscience clear and
remain free from greed and resentment
That's prison right there
This is an extremely
progressive and humane idea It
breaks down the barrier between spirituality and everyday life
It teaches people how to balance
life—work with all your might give
your utmost effort for the nation
but when work is done let it go
Never let profit tarnish the purity of your soul
See how cool that is
King Trần Nhân Tông once said
Your thinking remains as pure as distilled water
He transformed Buddhism
into a source of positive engaged energy
walking alongside the nation
but not a reclusive religion
detached from the people And once he
took up the role Tran Nhan Tong
actively engaged with great vigor
He doesn't just sit still to
receive bed offerings—he transforms
into a wanderer exploring every
cave and alleyway with a bamboo staff
In hand a pair of grass sandals
on his feet He walked from north
to south even reaching Laos
Wherever he went he opened a school
Eliminate illiteracy and provide medical care for the people
there Especially He strongly
disliked superstition At that time
People with low education still resort to fortune
-tellers whenever they fall ill or face misfortune
Slaughtering chickens and pigs for worship is costly and wasteful believing in
silly superstitions is foolish Emperor
Trần Nhân Tông personally visited the site
you have to take medicine when sick and when
crops fail you must reassess farming
practices instead of praying to spirits—get rid of all those shrines dedicated to evil spirits
Get lost He taught the people to live by the
ten good precepts and
abandon outdated customs
Wherever officials are corrupt
and oppressive he immediately
rectifies the situation Even though he is known as a monk
Yet the prestige of a retired
emperor remained undiminished
local officials upon seeing him would tremble with fear
dared not act recklessly Here's
a very amusing anecdote: you know
Buddhist practitioners typically
observe vegetarianism But Tran Nhan Tong
He has very flexible thinking He once
said what matters most isn't whether
one eats vegetarian or non-vegetarian food but the intention behind it
He was teaching the dharma when he saw the soldiers suffering
from meager meals He said "You
go fight to defend the nation "
How can you keep eating boiled
vegetables forever Just eat properly
gain your strength and defend the homeland That’s the real duty
Where would you stop There you have
it—a psychologist who's gone too far He
understands that cultivation isn't about
tormenting the physical body in such a way
machinery the root of the issue lies
in awakening the spirit Thanks to the
guidance of Saint Trần Nhân Tông Buddhism
during the Trần dynasty flourished
Unprecedented brilliance every person
in every household deeply imbued
with thoughts of compassion and
kindness yet still strong and resolute
They called it the noble aura of Eastern A A spirit of
an era when kings were wise ministers
virtuous and the people content
It's harmonious The entire country is like one big family And
you know what Even though busy
with leadership responsibilities
The church even under Trần Nhân Tông retained his wit and
artistic soul He composed a
great deal of poetry and prose
His poetry is anything but
dry or dull—it's intensely
romantic soaring and passionate Reading his verses
He saw a soul deeply in love with
nature—seeing the moon feeling the
wind noticing flowers grass and
trees For example the morning poem—
In autumn He wrote of the chilly
morning mist the sound of temple bells
Trần Nhân Tông demonstrated that practicing
spirituality does not make
people dull or slow-witted
On the contrary it makes
the mind sharper and
the soul more open He lived a complete life
Every second every minute
—majestic when ruling
as king resolute in battle shrewd in diplomacy
And when he entered monastic life he was serene and self-sufficient He played
the game of life with exceptional skill
never making a single unnecessary move
But every celebration must eventually come to an end
The legendary king's journey through the
mortal realm was likewise drawing to a close
And even the way He departed from this humble
little earth was profoundly unique deeply
characteristic of a Zen master
earning lasting admiration from generations to come
How did he depart
Was it with pain and sorrow
It's another move that goes straight into the ground—literally—
but still manages to score two
points Let's head over to chapter 6
The final lesson and
farewell of a legend as we
explore what Tran Nhan Tong left behind for us
If His life were a blockbuster
movie then its ending wouldn'
t be a tear-soaked tragedy but
an open-ended happy conclusion
deeply satisfying leaving a
lasting impression that gradually earned the audience's
applause Time slipped by unnoticed
Before long it was the year
1308 At that time Tran Nhan
Tong was eleven years old In
the feudal era this age was
They're now considered elders
no longer young and strong men
After a long period of traveling and exploring everywhere
Ravaging the map of French
Indochina to sow the seeds of
Buddhism the Master felt his
health begin to sound a dire warning
The physical body has its limits but His
spirit remains fully energized Knowing in
advance the exact time and date I will
depart from this fragile burning earth
Trần Nhân Tông began arranging
everything with the same meticulous order
and precision as he had once deployed his troops to battle the enemy
The most important first step is
to find a worthy successor to take
over the Truc Lam Yen Tu Group The
selection must not be made arbitrarily
Generations of fathers sons and grandfathers yet choosing based on genuine ability
And the one selected was Pháp Loa
an outstanding disciple
with exceptionally high
intelligence and emotional
quotient scores and on the first day of the month
In 1308 he formally handed over
the symbolic robe and begging
bowl representing the authority of the religious leader
appointing Phap Loa was akin
to the Chairman of the Board
deciding on a new General
Director before retiring entirely
He gave careful instructions: once the teacher leaves
you stay behind remember to preserve your identity
Don't let brothers be divided remember to continue the mission
of bringing the teachings into the world
Once the company matters are settled
He turned his attention to family matters Hearing
that his sister Princess
Thien Thuy was seriously ill
Trần Nhân Tông immediately descended
the mountain to return home
This is a very ordinary yet touching detail Despite being
A enlightened monk sees
all things as impermanent
yet he is not cold and unfeeling like a stone
He remained deeply devoted
to his family He visited
his sister comforted her and only then felt at ease
urn back toward the mountain As they
parted he said a single sentence that
sent shivers down everyone's spine with
its uncanny accuracy Stay behind please
If you leave now you'll make
it otherwise I'm going ahead
I mean we're about to meet
each other in the next world
It’s the same either way—first or
last it doesn’t matter Talking about parting
in life and death as if it’s just a casual trip to the market
Returning to Mount Yên Tử
he no longer stayed at the main temple of Hoa Yên
but ascended to Am Ngoạ Vân
This was the highest point
e most secluded shrouded in
white clouds year-round He wished
to spend his final moments in
solitude communing with nature
Not wanting to be disturbed by anyone yet His devoted
admirers simply wouldn't let
Him be A close disciple named
Security just followed along keeping
an eye on things while seizing
the chance to ask about a few tricky questions Day and night
On the first day of the eleventh
lunar month in the year 1308 the night was as dark as ink
with gusts of wind blowing intermittently Within
the Am Ngoạ Vân the air was still and silent
so loud that he could even hear the sound of a sniffle
Suddenly King Trần Nhân Tông
opened his eyes and asked Bảo Sát
My disciple what time is it now
Guardian glanced at his watch
—no at the sky—then replied
Excuse me Master it's now
It's late at night roughly
between eleven o'clock and one in
the morning Tran Nhan Tong
nodded Yeah it's about that time
The teacher is leaving Hearing
this the Guardian was startled
realizing the moment of parting had arrived Yet instead of
Wailing and lamenting this fellow still
seizes the moment to ask one final
deeply philosophical question: Where
does the master go when he departs You all
See even at the last minute there's still
an interview If it were anyone else they'd be
frantic— the ship's about to sink and tomorrow
they're still asking pointless questions
But Trần Nhân Tông remained completely
calm he immediately recited a
verse in response The essence of
the poem was that everything in life
All is illusion birth and death
are merely natural laws Do
not cling to the question of
where one goes or what one does
Tired he finished reading the poem and performed an
act that left everyone
astonished The emperor did no
He arched up in sharp agony
gasping for breath—no one to soothe him
He lay on his right side his right hand
Lift your head let your left arm hang straight
Place your left foot on top of your right foot
This is known as the lion's reclining
pose the sleeping posture of the Buddha
When Shakyamuni entered Nirvana
He lay there serenely
at ease his face calm and peaceful like
sleeping soundly after a long exhausting
day and thus the heroic
king the Zen master
Our revered master has gently
breathed his last like a leaf
returning to its root having
peacefully departed this world
the coolest way possible
No fantasy no
despair true to the essence of someone
who has taken control of their own destiny
But the story doesn't end there
The most miraculous the most astonishing
the part that surprised people the most
was in the aftermath
Theo Di Trúc's disciples cremated his
body immediately at
the Hỏa Vân hermitage
Usually after a person is
cremated only ashes remain But when
the flames die down the disciples
go in to collect the bones
Oh Spirit They discovered
thousands of hard gem-like stones
shimmering in every color of
varying sizes scattered throughout
That is the stupa In Buddhist circles it refers to high-ranking
monks who have attained enlightenment and
reached the境界 of the Mahayana path
Only when the soul is profoundly
serene does cremation result in relics
The number of relics belonging to Tran Nhan Tong
There were countless numbers filling
up several jars This is solid undeniable
proof— the strongest affirmation— of
His life dedicated to spiritual practice
Those who once doubted him—this man
who supposedly became a
murderous king —what are they practicing now He must
have become a monk just to show off
Now all must be extinguished
Hearing the news the people rushed to the mountain
to pay homage King Trần
Tong his son upon hearing of his father's passing wept bitterly
and rushed up and upon seeing the
relics felt both sorrow and pride
The king also brought the sacred relics back
to the capital distributing them for veneration in various
locations so that the people throughout the country
could all share in the blessings The passing of Tra
The late Emperor left behind a vast void
yet simultaneously a monumental
legacy He did not leave behind gold or silver
for they were consumed in expenditure
Now focused on building the nation He left
behind a guiding ideology an unshakable
faith in the strength of the Vietnamese
people and Vietnamese intelligence
The life of His Holiness 700 years
ago is like a lighthouse illuminating
for future generations what it means
to live beautifully and meaningfully
He taught us that being a king or a
commoner a monk or a layperson rich
or poor doesn't matter—what truly
matters is one's attitude toward life
Live passionately give your all
and when you depart leave behind
the most precious jewels you
have to offer the world In summary
we Generation Z young people
living in the digital era can
learn what from idol Tran Nhan
Tong What lessons can we draw
Has the 13th-century approach
still got relevance today for sun
sailing meeting deadlines or starting
a business The answer lies ahead
the final chapter
chapter 7: Legacy Beyond
Time join us as we continue the journey
Let's jointly distill the secrets
to success of this ruthless king
Hello everyone so we've just
finished telling the full story
of the 13th-century youth idol's life across six chapters
Emperor Trần Nhân Tông from a prince
who once fled home in restless defiance
to an unwilling leader burdened with
the fate of Đại Việt ultimately became
The warrior god who destroyed
the Mongol army and ultimately
became a Zen master founded the Trúc Lâm Yên Tử sect
Many people will say
this king lived 700 years
ago back when he rode horses and shot arrows
Back when I was riding my motorcycle
and scrolling through TikTok
what does that have to do with studying Yet somehow I ended up making a huge mistake
If you take the time to look closely you'll see that Tran
Nhan Tong was indeed a master of soft
skills the one who truly grasped
old onto the survival guide
that Gen Z folks are tirelessly
searching for in expensive self-development courses
Today in this final chapter
I won't be sharing any more historical tales
but will instead distill three hard-earned life lessons
from the ruthless journey of a tyrant
o see if we can apply any of
it to our lives filled with
pressure and deadlines
Lesson one: the art of balance
The peak of effort giving it
your all—do you see how today's
Gen Z is so easily stressed
burned out and drained by pressure
Are we really keeping up with our
peers We keep chasing achievements and money
only to lie awake at night plagued by
insomnia and anxiety Just take a look—
From the perspective of the True Person
Sect just how great is
the pressure on him Immense indeed The burden of his career weighs heavily upon him
The survival of an entire nation
rests on you your opponent is the
world's mightiest empire Your
mission is to preserve your country
He managed to break through the barrier Yet
he refused to let that pressure consume him
When stepping onto the field he fought with
relentless intensity and fierce determination
but when the war ended he immediately set aside
his duties laid down his sword and spear and turned
to poetry tea and moon-gazing—such is the wisdom of
living in the world yet remaining detached from it
Wandering in life the
joy of his path teaches
us to live fully in each moment When we do
Hunting deadlines racing against time studying for
exams—give it your full 100%
focus But once it's done—
Set all worries aside and fully
embrace life Don't
bring work to bed
And don't bring anxiety
to your meals—this is true
mastery of healing Lesson two:
the art of managing drama
Forgiveness brings peace of mind In
life you will undoubtedly encounter
people who wrong you speak ill of you
behind your back or fellow colleagues who
Harmful what are the common reactions It's
the urge to strike back the desire to retaliate
in an instant driven by deep-seated hatred
But recall the act of burning
the chest of letters
by Tran Nhan Tong He held in his hand a list of those individuals
Betrayal—those who once sought to sell
You—stand before You You have the right
to punish them yet You choose instead to
burn them utterly erase them completely
He does so not because he is
foolish but because he understands
that holding onto hatred is
like drinking poison yourself
Among others dying like that His
forgiveness not only brought political
stability but also freed His own
soul from those burdensome energies
egative The lesson for us is
when faced with gossip and unnecessary drama
learn how to
hit delete block it out
Let go of it Forgiveness isn't given because the
other person deserves it but
because you deserve peace
A gentleman's revenge may come ten years late but Tran Nhan
Tong the gentleman chose not to
bother with retaliation at all
Long working hours That's truly
the demeanor of a strong person
Lesson three: Know your place
Be yourself be authentically you
Born the son of a king
yet He did not allow the throne to define
His own identity He did not strive to
Emulating the Chinese emperors he
maintained a dignified and solemn demeanor He
lived authentically according to his true
nature—free to become a monk if he wished
If you enjoy writing poetry write poetry if
you prefer sleeping in the midst of battle then
sleep When founding the Trúc Lâm Zen school he
did not simply copy Buddhist teachings verbatim
India or China come back
He created a version of Vietnamese
Buddhism tailored to Vietnamese culture and we Gen
Z are doing the same
In a flat world where
trends shift every second
don't try to become a
copy of someone else
Just be yourself confident
in your own identity No matter
who you are or what you do your
worth isn't measured by likes
In the virtual world true value lies not
in what you've gained but in what you
've genuinely been kind and奉献 to this real
life Seven hundred years have passed
The golden palaces of old are now just ruins
and the great battles
have faded into history
Yet the image of Emperor Trần Nhân Tông the king
with a serene smile wearing
a simple humble brown robe
And the vast compassionate heart
remains forever alive in the
Vietnamese consciousness He was not
merely a king but a cultural symbol
A great teacher showed
us what true happiness
truly is—happiness is not about holding on
True happiness isn't about
standing above everyone else but knowing when to
let go and bending down to lift others up
Supporting countless people Hopefully
through this long series you'll not
only enjoy fun and entertaining moments
with these historical comedy stories
and even managed to collect a few relics of wisdom to keep in
my pocket as personal souvenirs
Thank you all for accompanying me
Join me in traveling back to the 13th century
The journey of exploration
into the sacred teachings of Emperor
Trần Nhân Tông concludes here
Wishing you always maintain a calm mind a passionate
heart and a serene soul amidst
the turbulent 21st century
