NUKU HIVA What do we REALLY eat when there’s no store nearby?
We live in a remote valley on Nuku Hiva Island in French Polynesia, where there are no roads or shops, and daily life depends on what nature provides or what we carry ourselves. We go to town once or twice a month to restock essentials, but most of the time, the valley feeds us.
From breadfruit to sea urchins, this video shows what food and daily life actually look like when living far from everything.
This is not survival. This is simply our life. Welcome to our world in Hakaui Valley.

🎥 About us: We are Ana & Tanguy, living in a remote valley on Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands. We share real life, traditional carving, art, culture, and everyday moments from one of the most isolated places on Earth.
Oh that's a big one.
There is no supermarket in our valley so if we want to eat we have to go outside and get it
ourselves. Today we are collecting food from the ocean, from our garden and then we will cook it
Careful babe, careful.
Breeding boy, breeding. Wow that's a diver.
Today's shopping looking pretty good.
Oh that's a big one. Wow how many babies does it have?
Eight babies. And the one on top, did you count the big one? Yeah, nine. The baby and mama.
It's actually two different sorts. The size difference is crazy.
Taking plenty. Yeah, we took twice. For today's lunch.
Coconut milk. In Marques they say this is aphrodisiac. No. No. No aphrodisiac. I really know.
Spicy candy but people are scared to eat. Why scared to eat this candy? We love spicy.
But we like a little spicy. Fish, tuna. Tuna fish. From Pakeho. From Pakeho, okay.
And Pakeho is a friend and a fisherman. Fisherman.
That's a good sign. Oh it smells so good.
Oh Heko is here. Of course, he needs to check the action. What's happening?
Heko that's too hot for you.
Today we are making pounded breadfruit in a coconut milk. It's a traditional Marquesan
dish called kaku. And we are making a local salad and a fafaru. Fafaru it's a fermented tuna
in ocean water. It has a very strong smell. So it's not a very popular meal with the people from
the outside. But Tangi loves it. You grew up with your Pakahia. Eating kaku. And with your godmother.
That time no shops. And 40 years later still no shops in the valley.
And we like it. People are back again in the traditional way. That's true.
I'm waiting. See. May season. It's a May season. May season to get kaku.
We won't be able to do this in one month. It's gonna be too late. Yeah. But now it's a perfect
time. Who taught you? Who was your teacher?
Did they teach you in school? No. No. Just in a family.
She would always make it.
Yummy.
Okay.
This is just a normal day for us. But I know it's not normal for everyone.
And tomorrow we will go outside and we will do it all again.
