Our Garden is full of fruit and veg and we are in peak harvest-mode here on the homestead. In today's video we're harvesting corn, pumpkin and tomatoes.
Hi, I'm Jess
My Family and I do multigenerational living and here on YouTube we are documenting our homesteading journey on our two acre urban section in New Zealand. Here we raise free-range laying hens, meat chickens, and bees, and cultivate a chemical free vegetable garden - all while nurturing our free-range kids.
We cherish a blend of honest hard work, adventure and slow life that homesteading offers.

We have just come outside to check the corn and some of it is ready so we're going to go ahead
and harvest that now. So there are a couple of different signs that corn is ready for harvesting
and the first of which is that the cob has gone on a 45 degree angle from the main stem
and the next is that the tassels have gone brown and the third is you can go ahead and pull back
a little bit of the silk in the skin there and you can stab one of the corns with the knife
and if the liquid that comes out is milky rather than clear then it's ready.
If it's clear it just needs a few more days.
There you go. Put it in the box. Thank you. Here girls, who wants this one?
So this is what we harvested of the corn. There's a couple more bins already taken inside but we're
going to go chuck these in the fridge and eat them over the next couple of days.
Oh that's wax, that's not honey. That's just wax. Just wax. So I'm just about finished planting out
this beetroot here. I planted it indoors about two or three weeks ago. About half of them I've
planted in individual spots and the rest I wanted to try cluster growing. Because these have been
indoors I'm going to try and find some sort of covering to put over them just for the next few
days until they settle in. These vines have all died off now so it's time to harvest some pumpkins.
You're so strong.
Potentially something I should be doing out side.
There was a bunch of maggots in here so I'm going to spray this all down and feed them to the
chickens. Like baby flies they look like little gross worms because they're good for the chickens
to eat. Like worms. Hopefully they find them now. So a little bit of an update for this area for
going into winter. I have planted carrots down this entire row here and on this half we've
still got our late variety potatoes that we are going to harvest in a couple of weeks.
Here is where I'm planning on planting my brassicas that I've sown the other week.
So that's that. And I heard that for pest control for your brassicas you can plant mustard near it.
So I'm going to plant some mustard down the side where the wildflowers were.
And then on this side over here I think I'm going to put some celery. I'm a little unsure. I think
that's what I'll do though. Then I've also got some lettuce to plant but that'll go in the yard.
So yeah that's a little bit of a garden update for heading into these cooler months.
But for now while the sun still shines I've got more tomatoes to pick. We are getting so many
cherry tomatoes at the moment. Well we have harvested a lot over the last two days and we
still have heaps more to harvest. I think we've only harvested only half the corn and half the
pumpkins that we've got but we're going to leave it at that for today. Thanks for watching and
we'll see you next time. Give it a weird twist because I've never done this before.
Are you trying to get the tomatoes? Good job!
