The diseases housed here are equipped with extremely simple ceramic filter sleeves
Yet they will filter out every last trace of suspended particles in the water with extraordinary precision
It's a holding tank with a capacity of just over 7.5 cubic
meters—perfectly sufficient for a weekend cabin or a vacation hut
It might be suitable for a single person with a water-saving lifestyle
We have a counterweighted molding system
It consists of a small pulley and a counterweight connected down to a floating batten
And it will alert me when we need to pump water the float will
gradually rise and press against the glass at that connection point
And all the remaining clean water from that point onward will flow directly into the reservoir
Water flowing over these two roof sections is channeled through a system of gutters and discharged right here
Flow directly into this stone reservoir and the water will emerge here gradually seeping through the layer of stone
Water will continue to flow into this area then naturally drain out through the final outlet and exit onto the sidewalk
This plant is a flood-tolerant species native to
wetlands yet it gains drought tolerance once established
On our side we have mugwort which is similar in that regard
Their roots will help rebuild the soil structure preparing it for plant roots to absorb moisture throughout prolonged dry seasons
Hello I'm Geoff Lawton and I'll show
you how we harvest rainwater in the cold
How we collect clean and store water
This is a cold-colored shrimp roof also known as a zinc-aluminum striped shrimp
roof — an exceptionally excellent type of roof for collecting drinking water
Clay tile roofs or concrete tile roofs are both excellent choices
And here is a classic downspout—designed with a gentle slope
toward the far end where the
pipes will catch the flowing water
Channel it through the upstream rainwater separation system
then direct it straight into the potable water storage tank
This is a very basic upstream rainwater harvesting system it is a
widely available pre-fabricated device commonly found in Australia
Water flowing down from the roof will first enter this storage
chamber and then slowly drip out through this tiny tube
There's also a small filter here and you can see a bit
of dirty residue accumulating inside We
refer to these as organic impurities
Inside this compartment is a ball
It's just a freely floating ball
Water is flowing into the compartment faster than before
The air slowly leaks out from that tiny tube causing
the ball to gradually rise and seal the connection point
And all the remaining clean water from that point onward would flow directly into
the storage compartment once the rain stopped this compartment would drain completely
And we managed to keep a small amount of dirty but useful residue
Not much at all
A remarkably simple system that works incredibly well
Just open it occasionally and clean it out
— I'll wash all the dirt and sand out of it
That tiny little hole over there is what allows the water
to slowly seep out preventing it from escaping too quickly
So when we put them
back together this piece
will fit here and this one will fit there
The ball is brought inside and this section is
pushed upward from below and then tightly sealed
You don't necessarily have to let the water flow straight down into
the container it can flow downward in a loop and then curve back up
As long as the inlet water point is higher than the point where water flows in
simply ensure your overflow trough is positioned higher than the top of the reservoir
Rainwater will automatically be pushed back up and flow into the system it would be extremely
helpful if you designed a connection point like this at the lowest possible location
You can attach a cactus cap there
You can remove it to drain water
And if any residue stirs inside you'll
blast it all out in one decisive kick
At the inlet of each tank there is a filter screen and a mesh layer
to prevent leaves twigs or any wildlife from entering the interior
This is a concrete reservoir with a capacity of approximately 90 cubic meters or 90 000 liters
It's a spacious layout you can use for a large
family home or even share between two adjacent houses
Or it can serve as a water reservoir for irrigation on the farm especially
if you're unable to use or construct a traditional water storage pond
This is a large reservoir with a capacity of approximately 38 cubic meters or 38 000 liters
It has the perfect size for a standard family home
It could serve as a large-scale elevated water reservoir for a small community
Or install elevated irrigation systems for crops
This is a concrete reservoir with a capacity of over 7.5 cubic meters
Well it's a bit small for the average family's usage and storage needs
But it would be perfectly adequate for a weekend getaway house or a vacation cabin
It might be suitable for a single person with a water-saving habit however
it could also become an excellent high-capacity water storage solution
That means you'll harness water pressure by positioning
the reservoir higher than the final point of use
If you want water pressure at least comparable to that of city mains
you'll need to position the tank at a height of about 15 meters
You can go much higher than that
You can reach up to a staggering 60 meters
Beyond that point you must design pressure-reducing stations in stages as you descend the slope
Because most pipe-related lawsuits would not be able to withstand such high pressure
Just like most reservoirs located on hills far from any immediate
access you'll want to know when you need to pump more water up
Therefore here we have a counterweighted molding system
It consists of a small pulley and a counterweight connected down to a floating trim piece
And it will let me know when we need to pump water
because once this external part is pulled upward
The inner barge sank down—it was simply a barge
with a counterweight attached Therefore
when the water level dropped
The float and the weight inside will descend as the water level drops
conversely as the water level inside
gradually rises the float will rise
And the outer pointer will drop down
Just like the old sign here says
Time to start pumping water
This is a concrete water tank with a capacity of approximately two cubic
meters and it's precisely the ideal size for an overhead water tank
In an ordinary family home
And if you want to filter water right at the final point of use
The diseases housed here are equipped with extremely simple ceramic filter sleeves
But they will filter out every last suspended particle
in the water down to an extremely incredibly fine degree
Thus at this filtration point there is absolutely
no trace of impurities left in the water
Alright here it is
Crystalline distant breathtaking rainwater
The most delicious water in the world
Here we can see what this landscape
looked like before—just a plain lawn
Although it contains a few other grass species mixed
in overall it remains a monotypic plant community
The entire area is just a
monotonous expanse of crops
lacking structural diversity and abundant flowering
And it didn't provide a single bit of habitable environment but now in this
new landscape we've successfully grown
around twenty different types of plants
An immense biodiversity unparalleled until now
When these trees began to grow and completely cover the space
We will also have many other diverse structural layers derived from them
and one of the most striking features of this water harvesting landscape is
It's the rainwater collection system from the roof above with water naturally
flowing from these two roof areas channeled
through an underground ping system
And let it flow right here
Run straight into this stone-lined ditch
That's why when it rains the water will pour out from here
Seeping in and gradually penetrating through the rock layer
In fact we designed a brick drainage channel
Right beneath this small bridge
And then the water will continue flowing down into this area
pooling temporarily before gradually seeping into the ground layer
And right here we have what is known
as the spillway gate or overflow gate
It is responsible for determining how high the water level will gradually rise
Thanks to this design water can gradually rise to about 15–25 cm
depending on the specific location within the water collection pit
Water will engulf the entire area
Seeping deeply into the ground
Spreading horizontally through the surrounding soil layers
And when the water level reaches
that point it spills over this rocky
ledge cascades down and repeats the same process in the second pool
Then proceed to the third pit
Finally if we experience a truly heavy downpour
Water will gradually flow out through the final
anal opening and exit via the rectal shelf
Here we have several types of plants growing
directly in the water collection pit this one is known as temple grass
It is naturally a wetland plant but it does not require
continuously flooded conditions
it is a water-loving species
Yet it has the potential to
withstand drought once established On this side we have
yarrow which is similar in that regard
It can thrive in moderately moist conditions
but can also withstand drought completely
And these two types are both semi-desert plants native to the California region
Right in this area
Choosing the right plants is absolutely crucial
For the function of such landscape systems
because as these trees grow
their roots help rebuild soil structure
This significantly improves the soil's water absorption capacity meaning
water can more easily penetrate deep into the underlying soil layers
At the same time root pruning also helps the soil retain
that moisture allowing these two plants to survive longer
Ready for tree roots to absorb moisture throughout prolonged dry seasons
Boats navigating this highland area
We have planted a mix of half-shade trees
Along with certain types of Mediterranean-climate plants
These are all drought-tolerant plants arranged in a
specific pattern to mic the
ecosystem of a shrubby grassland
We truly want to create a distinctive plant carpet so that when all these
trees grow up and cover the space dome it will be a breathtaking sight
It will look quite similar to what you typically see on natural hillsides
with all plant species here exhibiting exceptional drought tolerance
Thus after the first 1-2 growing seasons when the plant has established a strong
root system and stabilized it will hardly need or require very little watering
Artificial irrigation support
Although they are currently still connected to the drip irrigation system
To help young plants stay upright
Especially in the case of missing the usual seasonal rains
We are genuinely encountering landscapes that have not yet realized their
true potential—places that typically require substantial resources to maintain
We collaborate with clients to transform those spaces into a multifunctional system
Not only highly aesthetic but also genuinely replenishing and revitalizing the local natural ecosystem
In this case we start with a standard garden lawn
which constantly requires watering to stay fresh
Yet this lawn is rarely used by the homeowner
It provides no habitat for wild animals or beneficial insects
So we completely tore up the entire lawn and gave it a full makeover
Now we have these excellent water-harvesting pits
that help retain all the rainwater right on our land
Alongside this is a diverse collection of drought-resistant
plant species perfectly suited to the local climate
Have a wonderful day
