A new poll from the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies is shaking up California's
race for governor. The state hasn't elected a Republican governor in nearly two decades,
but two Republicans are currently leading the race. NTD's Christina Corona has the latest.
A new poll is shaking up California's governor's race showing two Republicans leading in a deeply
blue state. According to a UC Berkeley survey, conservative commentator Steve Hilton leads the
race with 17%, followed by Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco at 16%. Both are ahead of
the leading Democrats, Representative Eric Swalwell and former Congresswoman Katie Porter, who are
tied at 13% in a crowded field. Other Democrats in the race include Tom Steyer, Javier Becerra,
Antonio Villaraigosa, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, Betty Yee, and State Superintendent Tony Thurman,
with 16% of voters still undecided. California's top two primary means the two highest vote-getters
move on, no matter the party, raising the possibility of two Republicans advancing to
the November election. The state hasn't elected a Republican governor since Arnold Schwarzenegger in
2006, but voters appear focused less on party and more on the issues. Four in ten say the cost of
living is their top concern, along with housing, gas prices, and government spending. Last month,
candidate Steve Hilton outlined his plan to cut costs for Californians. We are going to cut the
fraud and bloat and waste in the government so we can cut spending, and that means we can cut
taxes. Your first hundred grand, no state income tax. And we're going to end their war on single
family homes and end the ridiculous regulations on building anything in California. So we restore
the California dream of a home you can afford to buy so our young people stay here and build their
lives and their families don't have to leave and go to another state. County elections offices will
begin mailing ballots by May 4th. Christina Corona, NTD News.
