Comparing the new On Cloudeclipse to the Cloudmonster, what should you expect from this mega stack height running shoe. Find out if it's the right fit for you.
Hello runners! Coach Amanda here from Run to the Finish.
No fancy openings, no crazy anything today.
I just wanted to quickly jump on and talk to you about the new
On Cloud Eclipse. So this is their newest shoe on the market and you can
see it is a big one. For comparison,
here is the Cloud Monster. So this was one of the first On shoes I
personally really liked because it felt a little bit softer.
And here is the Eclipse. So it is about two millimeters higher.
So the stack height has gotten higher because they wanted to give you even
more cushion. It is not a plush like
bondi kind of cushion where you almost sink into it and I actually think that's
a good thing. For most of us we don't want to just
quite sink in but you are definitely going to know that it is a cushioned
shoe. They have also made some changes on the
bottom. So unlike actually almost all their new
ones, they got tired of people complaining about the rocks I think.
So they still have the pods on the side but then as you can see on the bottom
no more rocks getting stuck between pods. You will also see here
their speed board. So this is not the same
as a carbon fiber plate but they do talk about it in terms of giving you a
little boost. I would say a lot of what you're getting
with a shoe at this height and cushion is just more stability,
a little bit of firmness so that you are able to still kind of react
off of the ground. Another thing I do like in this shoe, they have stuck with
that thin tongue but it's an upgrade also from
what the Monster had. So the Monster is super thin, there's almost nothing to it
although not sharp which was a problem some other brands had.
This feels a little more cloth like and it is attached
inside as well so the tongue isn't going to be moving all over your foot.
Also a win for me personally. Shoe is slightly heavier than the
Monster which is to be expected, it is just a little bit more of a shoe.
So for me this is like a recovery day kind of run,
maybe a short easy day. Some of my athletes who are a little bit
heavier runners have said they really appreciate these shoes that have a
little more cushion and yet still have some spring and some
movement to them so that might be a win for you. Because of
the way most of these Maximal shoes are which is stack height,
I don't find it particularly unstable. I do not love any of these on the
treadmill so if you're a big treadmill runner
these super big stack heights I have found
to be problematic. I like it better outside.
It is a six millimeter heel to toe drop, that is a ratio I am a fan of.
Other cool things though that they did with this shoe is
they changed some things like their dyeing process so it actually uses
90% less water. They used a lot of recycled materials
and I personally am excited to see a lot of shoes just looking for those
kinds of ways to improve moving forward because our shoes only last us so long
so that's awesome. Another good example of seeing how much
bigger this shoe is, that's the Cloud Boom so that's their
carbon shoe. It's tall but tall,
cushioned, that's what you're getting here. So hopefully that helps give you an
idea of this brand new shoe. If you've got other questions drop them
below and of course I have a full article
detailing all the different kinds of on running shoes to
also help you decide.
