Being at the Overland Expo was a blast, such a positive atmosphere, friendly people with a common love for the outdoors and the vehicles to get them there while also providing comfortable shelter and a pleasant camping experience. Right up my alley!
The funnest part was meeting the good folks who watch my videos and or use the products I design! People walking up and saying "where are the goats?" Lol! I loved seeing that you guys are having as much fun as I do! Hearing about the good times people are having with family and friends both outside with my products but also indoors watching me take my dogs and goats out to beautiful wild places to cook and eat beautiful food. Either way, the stories seem to have one thing in common and that was that they were spending time together. Visiting with you who seem to be the nicest humans ever was so inspiring and encouraging for me. It was humbling to know that my work does play a positive role even an important role as I have learned the power of connection. Connection with our family and friends is probably the most important things to keep strong these days. So thank you all who took the time and effort to to stop by and say hi at the expo. I truly do appreciate it so very deeply.
Love you guys, Steve
While many of the Firebox Stove accessories that I had on display at the expo were testing prototypes that have not yet been officially launched as products available for purchase. Their parent products are listed below with links to my website.
I made it! I'm finally here at the Overland Expo. I woke up at 3 30 in the morning and I've been
driving all day. I'm going to keep this one side of the truck open so people can kind of see in
and see the wood burning stove and whatever else. But Harry from Fire to Fork YouTube channel just
came by so I got out all my gear because I was showing him. I thought I might just kind of walk
around and look at some of this different gear that's out here. There's some amazing rigs when
you're off-roading and you're in some remote areas. Sometimes you're more than one day in
you know you've got to spend two or three days to make the loop or whatever else. So you need
to have something that's capable but also comfortable. You've got to be able to sleep in it.
So lots of stuff here. Very cool. And then stuff like this big old monster.
Look at this thing. Holy smokes. Look at that beast.
Anyway I got up early and drove all day and didn't stop to get any lunch so I'm going to
walk back to my truck and cook up some chili and rice. What I'm going to do is layer this up
and then I'm going to slow cook it with the nano. I can't have any fires here so I'm going to do the
nano with gas. Pile of cheese in there. Add my Hormel beef chili. I'm going to crack an egg in there.
Pre-cooked minute rice. I'm going to put that on top.
Throw a lid on that. I'm going to set up the nano as a slow cooker. So let's get that lit. I want
that turned down about as low as I can get it and then we'll put the diffuser plate on
and then I'm going to put the grill on. I think I can do this without the tongs.
Put the grill on and then I'm going to put the pizza stone or the cooking stone on there for
thermal mass and then I'm going to go ahead and put my pot on and I'm going to go ahead and close
these handles and we'll just wrap this windscreen all the way around. My plate's not going to cover
it all. Yeah it comes pretty darn close. Yeah let's just go with that. I think that'll work
just fine. I'm going to set up my table. Let's see my prop stick is down here and then I can
just put my feet down in here and that's where I'll eat my dinner. Smells like cheese. We better
take a look. Let's see what we got here. I'm just going to open it up so you can see what's going on.
Let's see we're only at about 140. Put the lid back on. I'm going to give it another 20 minutes.
You probably noticed I didn't bring Irsa or Maggie. Maggie's a little too nervous for this kind of
thing and Irsa is just a little bit too crazy. This is a pretty innovative shell. It's got the
pop-top tent but it's all hard-sided. Looks like aluminum up there so that looks pretty nice
and then the same company makes this trailer that's a fairly narrow trailer so you should
be able to take it on some pretty narrow trails but then the top pops way up in that a-frame
give you all kinds of head space all these fancy rigs and then you've got my old truck that just
kind of stands out as being very different. I hope my dinner is done. This has been going for about
an hour now so let's see what's going on. Okay the chili is bubbling up. It looks like the egg
is cooked. The egg is right there and it looks like it's tender but it looks like it's cooked
so I think this is done. Yeah we're at like 200 degrees almost 190 so it's getting close to 200
degrees that should be plenty hot. Last time I didn't have the stone under it from the beginning
I just tried to do a really low temp but this time I kept that stone under it the whole time
and so that's why it took so much longer to cook but I'm hoping that it's not burned.
I'm gonna go ahead and turn my gas off so this is the big moment that did take a while to cook
but if it turned out good I think it's worth it because you can you could set this up and just
let it run while you go do other things you know so let's see what happened with that cheese is
the big moment looks like it's stuck up in there oh yeah I'm gonna have to scrape it out it's browned
really nicely let's go ahead and just dump that out all right you can see pretty much all of
it came out so it's not stretchy melty cheese I mean some of it probably is but mostly it's
a little bit of sour cream fresh cracked salt and pepper oh dinner is served oh I'm so hungry I'll
tell you what it turned out nice gotta get my fuel in for tomorrow and everybody's saying it's gonna
be real busy good morning overland expo and a beautiful morning it is boy I'll tell you what
I slept like a baby last night oh so nice man I felt good I was tired long drive and
just a lot of work getting ready for this so anyway I'm gonna make some breakfast
I forgot I had my insulated mug started with that kosher salt coffee time it's nice and strong
good thanks good morning nice how long you been around about 15 years where have you uh where are
you out of utah oh okay we actually got invited because of the truck yeah nice come on you're
more than just a truck cool this bacon looks perfect coming along very nicely look at that
beautifulness a little bit of salt a lot of pepper oh they look perfect oh look at that
hello baby come to papa oh this looks so good oh yeah
that bacon is steak cut bacon and it's just thick as can be
oh man I'll tell you what you ever get a chance to pick up some of this steak cut bacon
oh it's so good
wow that plate is almost too hot to hold very nice wow now that's delicious
hey everybody I've got harry from fire to fork yeah youtube channel longtime watcher
instagram yeah so yeah how many years have you been doing fire to fork
seven years now seven years yeah yeah I haven't had a proper job in seven years
technically started in 2007 yeah so that is a proper job hey do you want a piece of bacon
this is steak cut bacon yeah yeah do it in this one and I haven't broken yet there's not
yeah kind of cooked it a little bit tell you what americans really know how to do bacon yeah
you really do good bacon huh yeah they call it steak cut bacon in australia we get this other
kind of bacon um and it's it's not the streaky bacon doesn't have all the fat in it it's basically
got no fat it's just the meat it's just the lean part oh the fat's the most important part
but it has to be like marbled together like when it's really separate fat and
gleaned it's not that great but when it's all mixed together like intramuscular yeah yeah
oh I love I love that isn't that good it's such a cool setup it's amazing what you can do on such
a small thing yeah that nano is tiny but with the gas burner on it it's just as effective as any
larger stove anyway and cook a surprisingly large yeah that nano hold it up will fit your shirt
yeah yesterday when I saw it I was like where's the rest of it I thought that was just one part
of it yeah it was the whole stove yeah I was trying to make it as minimal as possible my
first prototypes didn't even have a fire grate they were just just and then the flame was supported
by the sticks you put into the sides oh okay but we decided and surprisingly stable oh yeah it's
the wires look real thin yeah and but they're actually they're spring steel
so they're a lot stouter yeah stronger than you think they would be they're all yeah it's all
it's been really cool to actually feel it yeah and see how much more stable it is in reality
yeah anyway harry has three cookbooks two cookbooks two cookbooks yeah so check out
yeah on instagram instagram youtube facebook i guess i'm not really on tiktok not on tiktok
no yeah i waited a while before i got on tiktok but i am there yeah i probably should
there's an account there but it's it basically inactive i haven't logged in in a couple of years
but the best videos are on youtube so yeah check it out yeah yeah slightly bigger fire cooking
slightly bigger sky yeah but i came to use one of these in the one soon yeah cool yeah awesome
all right good to meet you well my hands are a little i'm used to it i've done this waxed canvas
makes my hands kind of waxy nostalgic i love it yeah yeah it's fun thanks man cool take care
i appreciate it thank you very much thank you yeah i'm so glad i love hearing that
i'll check online as soon as you get that extended platform out i think that's that's
the one i'm going to go okay cool yeah and we can always put a burner in it later right
yeah we're working on a burner you mean for this one yeah the burner does work at that
i want to do i want to learn the wood yeah that's fun yeah
how's it going good how are you so this whole thing all the sides
hey chris i'm steve
oh thanks
so far it's going really well
i've had three groups of people who knew who i was so so far so good this is fun
the show is going really well i'm very surprised how many people
have been watching my videos and who recognize the truck
so it's fun yeah tons of firebox fans have been stopping by i really expected maybe one or two
but it's been non-stop it's been fun how's it going is that fun in there
that's what i like about these bench seats
yeah thank you for stopping your camera picked it up better too
i'll give you a quick update uh things are winding down finally today it's been really fun
meeting people and having them share their experiences of you know how they use their
firebox stove and some people talking about using them with their grandchildren and it's just been
very inspiring to me and great to hear it it really motivates me and keeps me excited about
doing what i do so anyway thank you to everyone who came by to see me today i really appreciate it
it has been such a busy day and i am tired the sun's starting to go down so i'm just going to
grill a steak real fast because i just want some food and i've kind of got my nano set up here with
gas and the world's smallest gas grill so i'm just going to grill up my steak i'm not going to do
anything fancy and then maybe i'll get the deep fryer out and make some donuts for dessert i'm just
going to coat this with the salt and i don't really want that much on there but i'm just
putting it on there to start and we'll just roll it in this salt yeah cooking a steak
and then let's go ahead and get some oil on it and we can use that oil that i kind of spilled there
get this nice and coated i think i'm ready to fire up the grill there it goes all right so
i'm going to turn this down then we'll go ahead and get our steak on and i'm just going to let it
work nice and slow i think this is cooked enough so i'm going to go ahead and just turn the heat
off but i'm going to wrap it up with this windscreen because i'm going to let it rest
i can't wait any longer i've got to eat this thing i'm starving so there's my steak
very nice all right dinner is served
oh it looks good i'm starving let's start with this big piece
beautiful steak and it's hitting the spot i'll tell you what i am starving
awesome while i'm finishing up my steak i'm going to go ahead and get my oil heating up
so let's get this burner going again i'm going to turn it down just a bit
and get our box pot up here i'm going to do about that much i think that'll be enough
so while that heats up i'll finish off my steak
all right let's get our first donut in you just take these little biscuits these canned biscuits
you pinch the center until you make a hole in the middle and then drop them in you know kind
of got hung up on the edge but we'll we'll help it there we go i think i can probably fit two of
them in there so we'll do another one drop it in we're gonna have to move them around quite a bit
though it looks like my oil is plenty hot we're nice and brown now let's drain off that oil a
bit we'll put them right into the powdered sugar i think i want to go ahead and try to taste them
i had to move out under these lights because i'm just running out of daylight but i've got my
donuts here let's see if i can do this without making too much of a mess wow
they're definitely cooked all the way through and they are delicious
they turned out great they're delicious and i do love them with this powdered sugar very good
wow very nice i'm gonna eat my last donut and then i'm gonna hit the sack so we'll see you
still pretty early a lot of people are still like in their campers
um so i'm trying to be a little bit quiet but i'm going to make a breakfast cake this morning
and what's breakfast cake it's like a custard cake so lots of eggs and the cake i'm doing
is a lemon cake so it should be really good so i've got my cake mix and this is like really
nice lemon cake we'll just try it because i'm afraid i'm gonna have too many eggs
i want to be able to have some cream in there let's make some fat let's mix this up and see
what we get i agree with you all right my butter is very cold but i'm gonna try to butter this pan
nicely buttered i'm gonna leave all that butter in the bottom and make a nice little crust
so let's kick this around a little bit perfect i'm gonna put my diffuser plate on just to get
out of my way oh i'm starting to start to come out all right gas burner with the titanium diffuser
then i'm going to put the grill plate and the baking stone on top of that so we have a quite
a bit of heat diffusion hopefully it'll be enough and the bottom won't get burned too bad but it's
gonna be on there for a long time so you never know what you're gonna get so i'm gonna turn that
way down and i think this is gonna have to cook for about an hour because i have to move so slowly
because all that heat is down to the bottom flip this windscreen around put the lid on let's put
the plate on and i'm gonna set the timer for a half hour and we'll take a look at it let's just
walk around a little bit i don't remember exactly what i've shown you and what you haven't seen yet
but this lexus is pretty darn nice this is a nice location for this it's very peaceful
birds are singing this morning it's very enjoyable this tacoma with portal axles is pretty cool
those are 41 inch tall tires on a tacoma look how much clearance it has here's a silverado like my
truck but it's got the brush guard look at that big old beastie rush guard there's some big old
campers here wow that's a beast of a truck holy smokes f-550 it has almost been a half hour and i
can smell cake so i'm a little worried the bottom is gonna be pretty toasty but we won't know until
we open her up let's just see how things are looking in here oh yes it's raising rising
quite a bit in fact i might put some oil on this lid so it doesn't stick yeah lots of bubbles and
then you can see this is actually cooked right here so it is cooking from the outside inward
it's doing pretty good actually let's cover it back up a few moments later the show is about to
open so i kind of need to wrap this up but oh look at that it's coming right up and over
whoa oh yeah it's making a mess all right maybe i could take some out okay let's get this
wrapped back up so that it can finish cooking i think my cake is done and this show is starting
so people are going to start showing up soon so let's go ahead and i'll lift the windscreen off
let's just run my knife around the edge let's see how we did
oh that's really not too bad i kind of thought it would be more burnt than that so let's just
go ahead and cut off a thin layer i might have to put this up on its side
all right we'll just pull that away and we are left with our cake some of our cream cheese
frosting look at that breakfast cake my favorite that is good there's my breakfast cake
so delicious i'll tell you what i'm gonna eat every little bit of this
really really good i should get a picture of this too
that's a great breakfast oh my god
oh
that's our box pot i actually baked a lemon cake in a box pot this morning because i camped here
oh
so watch the videos there he's a video watcher anytime it comes out same day we're watching
because they're not like demo videos they're adventure videos i'm going out
the overland expo is now closed so everybody's breaking their rigs down and i'm closing
everything up here and i'm going to load my truck up onto the trailer and make the 10-hour drive
home but i wanted to say thank you to everybody who came out and i was able to shake hands with
and hear their stories about how they use the firebox stove or who they enjoy watching my
videos with some people talked about watching their videos with their parents or their in-laws
or some people watch them with their kids and it was so nice for me to hear that and it really
meant a lot to me so thank you everybody that i was able to meet here at the overland expo
and i do appreciate everyone else who watched my videos
