Hello and welcome to Lingster Academy, I'm your German teacher Julia.
and in this video, you'll learn what C1 vocabulary means and how you too can master it confidently
canst
Most German learners unfortunately remain stuck at the B level and keep using
the same words
One can survive quite well with it, but only moderately.
On the C level, however, it's not just about more or more difficult words; it's about
the right words with which you can describe a situation exactly, that is, precisely
Today I'm showing you four elements of the C1 vocabulary.
Nominalizations and noun-verb combinations, nuanced adjectives and verbs, idiomatic
Expressions and connectors with which you logically link sentences.
And of course I'll also show you how to learn all of this best, so stay
Definitely there until the end!
And we start directly with Element Number 1.
Nominalizations and noun-verb combinations.
Compare the following examples, please.
We must discuss how we can protect the environment.
A discussion about environmental protection is unavoidable.
She is considering applying for a new position.
She is considering applying for a new position.
I think that is a good idea.
In my opinion, that is a good idea.
Yes, I see it the same way.
I completely agree with you.
It is possible to receive a scholarship for this study program.
There is a possibility of obtaining a scholarship for this program.
Of course, both versions are correct, and it always depends on the context in which
You are communicating.
In a friendly conversation, you don't need such elevated language.
In a business, academic, or formal written context, such as a German language examination
Is the C-variant always more professional and do you instantly sound smarter and become
Seriously speaking.
Let us now examine nuanced, that is, precise terms, with which you can differentiate yourself more distinctly
you can express.
That means a specific word for a specific thing.
Often we want to describe our feelings very precisely or explain a state with crystal clarity,
so that no questions remain open.
Take a look at the following adjectives.
Interesting, insightful, fascinating, gripping.
Attention, not every word fits every context.
That's just the art of level C.
Here are a few examples of this.
My professor's lecture was extremely enlightening.
That means I was able to learn a lot, and therefore I found him interesting.
I find dolphins incredibly fascinating.
This means that dolphins are very special animals to me, and that is why I find them interesting.
The book is so gripping that I read it in one sitting.
This means that the book deeply moved me emotionally, which is why I found it very interesting.
Do you recognize the differences?
It is, of course, not entirely easy and requires many repetitions in different contexts.
Examples so that these terms are automatically used correctly.
Now I'll show you that using verbs.
carry out, do, perform, accomplish, execute
Yes, "machen" and "tun" are actually rather A-level verbs, but they are naturally
Also used at the B and C levels, but often in combination with a specific noun.
You already saw that in the first part.
Here are three examples.
The scientists are conducting an analysis.
This is a multi-step process that is well-organized.
The employee has completed all tasks.
This is about completing a task rather than the process or execution.
He made a payment.
One uses "tätigen" only with certain nouns, for example, a payment, a call, or a reservation.
This verb is quite limited and can only be combined with a few nouns.
You see, these are also quite specific situations, even though everything somehow
falls under the category of Doing.
Let's move on to element 3.
Idiomatic expressions
What does "idiomatic" mean?
This means that the meaning cannot be understood from the individual words.
The meaning, therefore, is to be understood abstractly and not literally.
Here are five idiomatic phrases and their meanings.
That is beyond question.
One thing is absolutely certain and will not be questioned.
One hardly needs to ask any questions about it anymore.
One should dress well for a wedding.
That is beyond question.
It goes without saying.
Something is obvious and easy to recognize.
Here, look.
It's obvious you have a headache after drinking a bottle of wine.
This should be enjoyed with caution.
One should not immediately believe or critically examine something.
This job offer should be approached with caution.
You get only 20 vacation days per year.
There's still room for improvement.
This means that something can still be improved or must be improved.
There's still air here.
Your presentation is already quite good, but there's still room for improvement.
Work on them again and improve them.
That's no coincidence.
If something has a good reason or cause.
He speaks German fluently.
It's no coincidence; he has lived in Germany for years.
If you master a few idiomatic expressions, that is, if you can
Then you instantly sound more authentic and confident.
Of course, it is important here to use them in a precisely suitable situation.
Use them only when you are absolutely certain of their meaning.
And thus we have already arrived at element number 4,
Connectives or text connectors.
This enables you to connect information together so that it sounds harmonious, both in writing and speech.
Of course, you already know some connectors like WEIL, UND, OBWOHL, etc.
They are fundamentally also completely correct and appropriate.
But there are also very formal and eloquent ways of connecting sentences.
The vacation offer sounds really good, but it's far too expensive for us.
Indeed. The vacation offer sounds really good,
However, it is far too expensive for us.
Next example. THEREFORE
There are increasingly more people in the world, so the housing market is overcrowded.
Consequently, there are always more people in the world,
Consequently, the housing market is oversaturated.
And one more example. BECAUSE or SINCE.
Since the construction work was delayed, the tenants had to wait three months for their move.
Due to the fact that...
Due to the fact that the construction work was delayed,
The tenants had to wait three months for their move.
As always, depending on the context, some connectors fit better than others.
Written texts are generally more formal than spoken conversations.
The art lies in knowing, at the C level, which term best fits which situation.
And now comes the big question.
How exactly do you learn that?
How do you manage to reach such a high level that you automatically find the right words in any situation?
It's not enough to just understand words; you must also be able to use them.
There is a method for that, which is extremely effective.
I learned them back then during my German studies, and I managed to reach level C in English and Spanish as well.
With this method, you don't just learn individual words, but all four elements of a language simultaneously.
Reading, listening, writing, and speaking. That's all you need.
And precisely through that, you actually reach the C level.
Most German learners unfortunately do not know that.
But don't worry, that's no secret with me.
I'll show you exactly how to apply this method to learning German in my free masterclass.
