How to desensitize your dog to sounds and noises. Today we discovered the Kira is scared of a certain sound in our home. So we give you a few tips on how to Desensitize your dog to noises. We don't want her to be afraid of anything, so we will be working with her to overcome this new fear that we have discovered.
Guess what?
We're doing today.
You would think that we were taking a shower.
We're not taking a shower, but Kira is in the shower.
Why are you in the shower? Hmm? What's the deal?
Is this the safest place in the house right now?
I have never in all the years of owning Huskies had a Husky that hid in the bathroom from anything.
And two, I've never seen Kira be scared of anything as of yet.
But today we found something that Kira does not particularly like.
Let me show you what it is.
So I'm in here making bone broth and as you can tell there's a little bit of noise.
The noise is coming from my hood vent and apparently Kira does not like this noise.
So let's see what happens if we turn it off.
So it's off. This is still making a little hissing noise, but I don't think that's what the deal is.
All right, let's go see what she thinks. She may already be coming out of the room.
Once she realizes it's off.
Let's see.
She'll take the treat.
No?
It's off though. It really is off. If you come out here and check it's off.
I'm serious. The noise is gone. You can eat the treat.
It really is gone.
You don't... you don't want the treat?
No?
It's like noise. I'm hiding in here for forever. Come on. I will show you. Come on. Come with me.
You're determined to not leave the shower. Now we're both in the shower.
Come on. We gotta... we're gonna... I'm gonna show you that it's off.
I don't think you can even tell in here whether it's on or off. That's probably why you're in here.
Memphis is like, what's going on? You have a treat in your hand and I would like said treat that is in your hand.
I'll give you one in a second.
Come on.
Let's go.
Would you like to treat now?
No, I didn't think so. All right, come on. We gotta get you out here. Now we're all in the shower.
We're all in the shower together.
Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on. She's like, no guys, no.
All right, I'm gonna get you out of here so everybody can see that
it was that that you were afraid of.
She's still a little cautious.
But we made it to the hallway.
Well,
she made it out of the shower room, out of the bathroom.
You come in here yet?
It's off.
You're still... you still want away from it, huh?
You want a treat?
Well, we have made it out of the bathroom and we made it to here.
The fan's off.
Are you still freaking out?
So is it not the noise from the fan?
You're like, daddy, do you not like the smell of bone broth?
Jamie, does it like the smell of it when I make it? Maybe that's what your issue is. Is that your issue?
Or was it the noise?
She's like, guys, I don't like any of it. Memphis is so confused. She's like, why? I don't know what's wrong with her.
Yeah, I know. It's the first time she's ever been scared of anything.
One more time with the treat? A treat? Nope.
Nope, you know, she's freaked out
when she won't eat a treat.
You're not even gonna try to take it from her?
Yeah?
All right, we'll check back with you in a minute. You can come sit with me, so it won't be so scary.
Come on.
Nope, we're right. It's the fan. As soon as I turned the fan back on, she took off running down the hallway.
All right, get to your safe spot. The safe spot!
There's your safe spot.
Huh?
It's interesting.
Very, very interesting.
So if you guys ever dealt with anything with your dogs when it comes to things like this, like where they're afraid of a sound,
say fireworks or something like that, there is actually ways to help them get over these fears.
One of the ways is you don't want to really feed into it.
So I don't really want to be sitting in here and be like, it's okay. You're all right. It's okay, because it kind of just
reinforces the behavior that she's doing right now. So instead, we need to slowly over time
desensitize her to this sound.
Which means things like turning the fan on just a little bit, leaving it on for a little bit, turning it off, turning it on,
turning it off.
Eventually,
over time, that sound just becomes another sound to her and she will become desensitized to it.
It's hard for me to believe that that's the first time I've really used the fan since we've had Kira, because we've had her a long time.
But maybe, I don't know, maybe I didn't notice before that she didn't like it. It's very strange.
Very strange.
So now, over the next couple of weeks, we are going to work to desensitize her to this sound.
I'm actually gonna go ahead and shut it off now, because it's been on for a little bit and I don't want her to get
really freaked out and then hated every time it comes on.
So I'm gonna go shut it off and let her chill out a little bit.
So yeah, I hope you guys learned something today in this short little video.
What do you think, Kira?
She's like, guys, this isn't funny. I'm scared. It's not funny. I know you're scared.
I don't like it when you're scared. You're supposed to be fearless, not supposed to be scared of anything.
I first knew she was freaked out about it, because she actually jumped up in my lap on the couch.
And I actually put a video of that up on TikTok.
She just wanted to be next to me and then she went from that to running down the hallway and coming in here.
So you can barely even hear it in here and I think that's what she likes.
So yeah, you can hang out in here for a little bit longer.
I'm gonna shut it off and let you come out on your own.
What do you think? Sound good? Sounds good to me.
All right, you guys. Well, we hope you enjoyed today's video. We hope you learned something.
