This is a review of the Cozart Doubleneck SG DIY Electric Guitar Kit. I also talk about what changes I am making to this kit and offer suggestions to improve on it. Instructions are available at my website www.thegospelguitarist.com.
Hi I'm Mike Sullivan. Welcome to Guitar Tech. How to do it yourself.
Hi Gospel Guitarist here with a video about Cozart do-it-yourself guitar kits.
I went on ebay looking at double necks and I seen a couple of really cheap looking guitar kits
and I figured oh boy do I even dare spend 200 bucks on one of these things but I wanted to
play around with the double neck and I've been wanting to build my own guitar and
paint it and alter it and do all the custom wiring or whatever that I wanted to do with it
and so I figured why not risk it I got some pickups laying around that was the last thing
that convinced me was I had a bunch of these Duncan designs I pull out a Schecter guitar
sitting in there I'm like hey I got four good pickups so I don't have to spend $300 on pickups
you know to make it sound half decent so anyway that convinced me that was kind of the breaker
and I had a guitar I could sell so I sold the guitar to finance this project and actually I
was quite surprised at the quality of the kit I was totally expecting complete junk
that I would have to do all kinds of things to spending hours and hours sanding and everything
to get it decent and the frets would be something you'd find on a Kmart special and
you know just totally expecting garbage so it was really a nice surprise when the necks caught my
attention first I have already cut these out these were paddle necks they were just squared off and
this one was about to here I decided to shape the necks with a simple curve I've seen this done on
some other videos where people made these and it's a nice complement to the curve section of
the SG body but you can actually run your fingers across the on the sides of this neck and my
fingers are not bleeding they're actually pretty sturdy looking frets and the 12 strings got
actually I love the 12 string neck it's I mean look at the streaking I love that it's just
gorgeous it's actually very nice every all the parts are the wood is really pretty good
it's all really well done nicely sanded the whole body is just right out right out of the box this
guy is ready to receive stain it does not have rough edges it is a very nice body and all the
I will post on the website in the do-it-yourself section the instructions for building this kit
I know some people are buying them and don't know where to get the instructions the seller for this
one I he had a note you can just email him and he'll send you the instructions and I read the
instructions and the instructions are totally different than what I have in this box it goes
into how to do a lot of things drilling all you know pre-assembling the guitar drilling all the
holes all that work was done and to my surprise when I took the necks and I set them into pockets
and I did the measurements for the bridge they were dead on I mean they were just absolutely
dead on and you don't have to take any sanding to the bottom of the neck you don't have to
put any stents in or nothing I mean it just it's it looks really good so I'm confident that once
I get the bridges on there the strings are going to be right where they need to be
I can put some shimming in if I if I'm not happy with it I really don't see that happening
I'm really surprised by that I was worried about setting up the neck properly
I did do some things on the body because of my own preference I bored out this area a little
deeper because I'm putting switches in this area of the guitar so that I can have parallel series
wiring for the pickups and so this just wasn't deep enough for that and there was nowhere else
to put it so that was and it's a soft basswood body I think it's basswood not basswood I never
do know it's either a fish or a bass I don't know I also drilled two holes here for the two
switches that will be for the six string pickups so each pickup will be wired so I can go with a
parallel or series wiring I want to try that versus the single coil split mode which is noisy
I figured that would be quieter plus I have never used it so other parts that come with it
what was nice was they include a rubber piece for the neck plate so that when you bolt this
sucker down to that soft wood the neck plate won't get buried in the wood and it won't crack
your finish that you just applied so that's a nice touch the tuning keys seem to be decent
they're not you know wiggly and cheap feeling they have the smaller handle on them
based on basically the fitting them all on a 12 string neck
so the six string is using the same size of course if you wanted bigger ones I'm sure you
could find a way swap them out or I don't think I'll have any problems with these tuning keys
and if I do of course you can just swap those out I do find these questionable
they're marked with cf on them and there's two a 500k and two b 500k pots surprised me that they
were 500k not 250k so but they are humbuckers they're supposed to be in here the ones that
came with the kit were just uh they were not chrome covered they were just open coil no
adjustments on the pole pieces and the second I pulled them out and put these in the rings they
went in the trash I'm not even going to try those so I don't expect them to be worth anything
these will probably just be saved for some other project or some kind of toy
I'll probably just pick these up and I buy switches for everything
and upgrade the switches I'll buy pots however it does come with a quality metal
jack plate and the jack actually doesn't move I mean everything on here is nice and tight and
snug I don't anticipate a problem with it doesn't mean it won't fail but if it does I'll just rip
it out and put a switch jack in there I'll just put a switchcraft in there um other things uh
pick guards actually the one in the instructions is not a triple ply the one that came in the kit
is a triple ply and I thought that was a plus because you kind of need that white stripe on
on this guitar it makes it makes it look good you can see the switch types that come with
the guitar these are mine they're in there just for looks right now I'm not going to use that set
they're nice and firm sounding switches they're not loose and jiggly and cheap feeling they look
cheap but I don't know no markings on them whatsoever for who makes them if they give
problems I'll swap them out uh real quick the uh truss rod covers are of a square design
just plain black comes with the black knobs barrel knobs like gibson style
back plate cover plate for your control panel comes with all the wire that you'll need
um nicer capacitors actually these are those poly poly whatever they call them the metal
type of oxide whatever uh they're not the cheap ceramic ones so I was kind of expecting the cheap
ceramic discs but these are a little better they're not orange drops but they're good they're
better um on the bridges they're stylish the chrome looks good uh but I can tell you
all four of these probably weigh about as much as one of these from gibson okay
that's not heavy duty steel it's a cheaper metal cheaper alloy so you're not going to
get a lot of the resonation from your strings into the body because of that because they are cheaper
they're gato style but there's no markings on them I don't know what company makes it and
I really doubt that it's gato um but they they look good and I really don't like this kind of
bridges but they're easily upgradeable so everything in the box comes with the kit
except for the pickups and uh it's good enough to get you started to get an experience with
building a double neck guitar of some limited it's got some quality issues but um for oh one
of the things that's a quality issue is the the nuts are plastic so they'll be coming off real
fast um so a couple upgrades could make this a nice guitar replace the nuts as I did as I'm
going to do replace the electronics you could just go all out and buy all this stuff at the
at the store and get all top top notch hardware if you want um I was mostly after basically the
wood and necks and I got those and it seems like uh it was a pretty decent deal I mean it isn't
flawless um you know there's little like a little tiny knot in the front on the uh rosewood there
which you're not going to run into that on a Gibson okay um but overall I mean for 200 bucks
and making your own project out of it and something you can carve up and make mistakes
on and learn from and experiment with and maybe even actually make it a really nice guitar I plan
on this one being a nice guitar okay um I've been around guitars all my life so I know enough to
to alter it to make it good but if you don't know anything about electronics and you don't know
anything about setting up a guitar you don't want to buy this kit I would suggest that you learn
something about it before you go and get something like a double neck just start on on a simple they
make the the kits of sgs les pauls fender strats telecasters um from what I've seen the the routing
and everything looks looks good one other thing if you do go with chrome pickups you're going to
have to widen the route for the pickups because the single coils are skinnier the ones that come
with it are not the single coils but the the non-covered pickups that come with it the bare
exposed coils um when you have the chrome covers you're going to have extra metal on the sides here
and it won't fit so you're going to have to take a little dremel and that's what I did and just
dremeled out in the corners I found that you need it right here you don't need to widen the sides
but you do need to open up uh the length a bit and just kind of go down each corner and then it'll
fall right in so that's my review on um on the double neck sg style guitar kit which I'm now
ready to get into the staining I'll make another video of the process when I'm doing the wiring
I'm sure I'll make a video of that showing the final stain and colors so stay tuned for that
and for the final assembly and trying it out so stay tuned thanks for watching and please
