Mr. Speaker, Kentucky established the State Board of Barbers on March 21st, 1902, making
our state one of the first to regulate the barbering profession.
Today, Mr. Speaker, I want to recognize and honor the barbers across Kentucky as they
commemorate the 125th anniversary of the regulation of practice of barbering in our Commonwealth.
The Board of Barbering currently oversees 3,300 licensed barbers and more than 1,000
barbershops.
Mr. Speaker, barbershops have historically provided not only essential grooming services,
but have served as beloved gathering places and cultural institutions, fostering fellowship,
civic engagement, and the exchange of information and ideas among community members.
The barbershop has held a distinctly significant role in African American communities across
Kentucky, serving as a cornerstone of economic opportunity, cultural identity, and community
leadership.
Today, the members of this distinguished body offer sincere commendation and gratitude to
barbers across Kentucky on their 125th anniversary for their continued service to our fellow
citizens and to our communities throughout the Commonwealth.
Mr. Speaker, I move adoption of Legislative Citation No. 103.
