At the moment, we'd like to show you this beautiful Weller soldering iron that we use every day in our videos. The Weller adjustable temperature irons work better than cheaper ones because they attempt to keep the tip at a certain temperature, and are a higher wattage. This helps you get nice solder joints and makes it easy to do repairs.

Ladies and gentlemen this is Joe's Classic Video Games back with another cool pinball repair video
for you this evening. We had a customer bring us a whole bunch of pinball machines and one of them
is this 8 Ball Champ. We've had one of these before so we're going to set it up and repair
it in this video. Now if you didn't see our other videos in this series make sure to check them out
and if the video hasn't been uploaded yet it'll be coming soon. We're going to fix all of these
so let me pull this one out put it on its legs and we'll see what kind of shape. All right we're
getting 8 Ball Champ put up and when I open the back box this is kind of just falling out of the
way. This is one of the reasons I always look inside of them before I turn them on after I
move them even if they're up on their legs and everything because stuff like this just happens
when you move them around. This isn't that big of a deal it probably wouldn't have caused any
problems but I'll move it back up where it goes and before we send it back we'll make sure that
it's got whatever it needs in it to keep it where it won't fall off like that.
Getting crowded in here. All right so all five of these belong to the same gentleman.
I believe he operates them. I'll have to ask Joey the whole story. I didn't talk with him but Joey
did but we've got a list of everything that they need. I think see Joe was telling me earlier I
think he said that one's broke, the Charlie's Angels is broke, Matahari's broke, 8 Ball Champ
is broke, and the Nugent's broke. So we'll have to go from there but we're going to start with
this 8 Ball Champ first. Now that I look at them we've had all five of these. I remember having
I know we had Evil Knievel the only one I wasn't sure about was Charlie's Angels but I looked it
up and yes we've had a Charlie's Angels. So we've had all five of these and done videos I think of
all five of them on our channel. I know these first four we have I'm just not sure about Charlie's
Angels but to me these are the ones that I really like working on and the gentleman's given us a
list of problems with them so it's kind of cool to to go through and just try to troubleshoot
things that other people have noticed that's wrong with them. I just like that
and I like this era I'll say the 8 Ball is the same era it's a little newer I think it's probably
about 86 or something like that the other ones are late 70s. So yeah pretty cool it looks like
it's in fairly good shape but it's got some wear and tear here and there it's got a little wear on
the play field. I don't think we're doing much cosmetic on them but I think we are on the
maybe the Nugent or something but yeah so I'll get the story from Joey and we'll get we'll
see what's going on with it and get it working 100% before we send it back to them. I waited a
day and now there's even more they're everywhere oh man I think there's a dozen of them in here now
all right so we got to start trying to fix them. So the problem with this one according to the
customer is that it won't start the game. Now every time I hear that I kind of know what the issue is
this is a Bali 6803 game and that's the mp the cpu that's on the mpu so they had this weird
little setup where with a keypad on it this is not the original this is a replacement the keypad
originally was one of those membrane ones and they get all screwed up or they're missing and stuff
and you have to have this thing to change the settings in the diagram in the the basically
the memory of the game so luckily he's got a new one and the problem is I'm going to guess this is
the problem it hangs right here on the side on this little clip that's how it came from the factory
like that and the problem is the get the battery dies on them and then the information inside gets
corrupted so it'll say like and this is a by this point they were well I was about to say
they were alphanumeric but they're not they get weird information stored in them so the the
the ram and it'll say two credits to start and each coin mac gives you one credit and so that
information will be sitting there be a setting that you can make it'll get corrupted and it'll
say that the coin mac gives you a nine and then the the it it takes three blank blank two credits
to start there's to be something like that of course this won't have letters in it because
like I said it's not alphanumeric but it'll say like that each coin gives you one blank three
two five credits and then each to start the game you need two blank blank blank one credits to
start the game it'll be something weird like that so you have to go in and reset all that
and usually that's the problem so let me see if there's anything else
I see a switch bent all to crap there I wonder if they did that on purpose I wouldn't think so
I don't know why you would and this gentleman does operate them so he's he's he's able to
do repairs on them and clean them and all of that stuff and and get them ready for
operation in his location but he just runs into these little tricky problems sometimes so he has
brought us five machines with tricky problems that we're going to try to figure out but while I'm in
here I'm going to fix this switch I don't like I don't like how that's all bent up one one thing
about these roll up I might have to take this off one thing about these rollovers is you've only got
a little bit of room the switches have to be pretty close because the button can only move
just a little bit so it's got to be pretty close or it won't work so I'll adjust that real quick
and then we're going to open the back box up again and get a better look at the power supply
and the cpu and all that in there because I want to see if the battery is still good on the cpu
because if we change that setting to the correct one if the battery is dead it uh it could change
back the next time you turn it on because each time that 5101 chip or whatever one's used in
this I believe it's 5101 every time that chip comes up basically it's going to store different
settings in itself if there's no battery backup to hold the settings now in the older games like
this evil can evil here beside it it had the same kind of thing but if you got corruption in the
settings it didn't matter because the coin settings were hard coded on the board with dip switches
so whenever the game booted up it would it might say that the high score is two blank blank three
nine five four one and you can't even score one point on it you know um and it might say that you
win a free game at uh one blank blank blank blank blank three or something like that you know just
have all this weird crap in the settings but the game was still playable and you all it would
really change is when you win a free game so you could still start it and all of that um because
of the dip switches on this one they didn't use dip switches that they use that board but um the
battery dying creates a problem so let me fix this switch since I noticed it while I was there
looking at it and then we'll look in the back much better okay I always thought these had such a
strange back glass setup they have a it's just this era of the games they have a plastic channel
on the bottom which you know plastic breaks and then there's one at the top and that's all that
holds the glass in so when it swings open it's like you know gives me the heebie jeebies all
right so the power comes in it's got a transformer here and then it runs over to this this large
power supply that's the one that was loose earlier um I assume all of that's working
all that should be fine now uh over here we'll look at this next this is the sound board
um I can't remember if this one talks I can't remember we'll go through this every time I
work on these there's like a thousand pinball machines people I can't ever keep them all
straight and then this is the cpu so the cpu has been replaced with a brand new one
nvram.wewe.com I've actually used them before uh that's the Baraka guy on
pinside I always remember his name because Baraka was in uh Mortal Kombat 2 um so
he makes good stuff um I would assume since there's no battery actually mounted on this
thing that there's some kind of nvram or something that you don't need it which is
probably this chip right here what's it say there fm1608 ramtron that is a tasty burp
that is an nvram if it's still working I would assume it is you know I'm making a lot of
assumptions there I'm assuming that that works I'm assuming that that but I really do think it
so I wonder if they put a new cpu in it got the thing to boot up but never could get it started
because of the corruption in the nvram and you would think if it's new from the factory it might
have already been set up with the correct stuff in it so I don't know might be barking up the
wrong tree here I think I'll just keep talking about it I don't know how we'll ever know
all right so let's get the manual out and we'll read about it all right so in the manual it has
this little sheet that came with the the board and it says ballet 6803 combo rom so basically
they have one rom in there that's dip switch selectable that has the the information for each
game the code for each game so eight ball champs what we got so we need one and four all one and
four on two and three off five six seven eight doesn't matter one and four are on all the rest
and then we need connector 8 in connector 9 out connect 10 in connector 11 out her jumper
8 in 9 out 10 in 11 out wonder where all that is I would assume that's right now you might say well
why are you checking all that you know it's all set up properly no I don't I don't know anything
it's not working right so we got to check stuff like this it could be something super simple
so let me find those jumpers all right so 8 is connected 9 is not 10 is connected 11 is not
or in out in out as they said so it looks to me like everything's proper all right so we're
going to try to boot it up and plugged it in nothing it's super dead okay it's kind of coming
in it took it a minute got a few issues all right so it's in a track mode see the play field let's
turn it back off try that again oh you know it's probably got a flash code so it's just taking it
a little bit to boot like a regular ballot does okay now the displays look a lot better you can't
tell really on the phone on the camera but um well now they're back bad again but anyway they're up
and running so we'll uh we'll see if we can start a game or not now on this one there's no um it
can't tell that the door's open so it doesn't matter if the door's open or closed nothing it's
dead bread there is a ball in it okay it's super dead okay so let's try to put a credit on it
nothing nothing we got nothing here folks all right so let's do what we were going to do
introduction one of the reasons for developing this new system is to provide more information
to the operator in the past the game was performing too liberally an operator could
only guess what features might be affecting his income through the process of trial and error
a good businessman eventually found the problem and either changed score thresholds or flipped
switches to get the game to perform in accordance with its location
the keyboard is located on the right inside wall of the game near the front door the cable
has been lengthened so that once the keyboard is removed it may be easily operated from outside the
game the first step is to press the black test button located on the front door once
this tells the processor to do the following check check check check check check check check
to make sure that no switch is wired in parallel with the keypad or closed if any of these switches
are closed the game automatically jumps to stuck switch test 94 is shown in the match credit
display well we have a problem our match credit display don't work so i think that might be
part of the issue you can't really use the keyboard that good if if you can't read the
displays so let's figure that out first and then we'll figure out the keyboard so you don't really
want to mess with these while they're turned on you don't want to wiggle them or anything because
it can fry chips on the board but you see that little orange dot on the back of that display
and the little orange dot on that display so in other words the power at least is getting
to the display and the glass isn't broken so that's good so what we'll do first is just turn
it off and since they're all doing it the problem would probably be at the other side right so
we'll just simply reseat some of these connectors and the way i could tell where those are is
because you can just follow the wires in here they're going around to basically these two
that's the power coming in though so that's probably all of the display stuff let's turn
it back on and let's see if we do get a led code up there yeah valley was good about putting little
flash diagnostics on it where it took a second to boot up while they tested everything
well it doesn't like something it did not like us messing with the uh the voltage the little the
leds are are labeled and stuff but you can't read them because it's over on the edge of the board
okay so let's turn it back off and we'll test some voltages first all right i turned it off
removed the connector again replaced it that led over there this one says five volts um they're
not they're labeled but they don't say completely what they are so you would have to look in the
um i think the diagnostic code yeah i just bumped that yeah that's not liking this at all
um yeah we might have to do some connector repinning here um basically if you've got
power issues it'll cause all of this right it'll also cause the displays to do what they're doing
yeah it's not happy at all okay so hmm let me pull one of the displays and look at it
let me pull that display number one so we can look at it so this is what i wanted to look at
these connectors on the displays can cause them to blink like that but these have been
re-soldered by somebody basically you'll get cold solder joints on here and uh they'll you'll just
get the displays will look like crap like they do right now um another thing that can cause it is
one bad display can make all the other displays do it uh and then another thing that could cause
is a bad connection on the other end um they're all daisy chained together but it's probably a
power thing if it's flickering like that and that's coming from the power supply and we know
that the power supply was kind of hanging out of it so maybe we pull it off and look at the back of
it now here is the back of the board and you can see that they have re-soldered this one connector
from the transformer that's basically what you need to look at they you can get bad solder
joints on these plugs when they pulled off here it just stresses them so look at that pin see the
ring around the middle of it there how it all actually looks like it's cracked that one looks
the same that one looks the same look how bad that one looks how that's cracked so it's touching
and the electricity is passing through here into that pin and then out the wire to the other end
but if it moves just a little bit it's not connecting right or you know if you get more
amperage through it it's not connecting right look at this one so it's cracked and sometimes
whenever you flow new solder on it you'll see that crack widen up and you'll be like oh god it wasn't
even touching that one looks all right that one's been redone as well so they've had issues with it
before which is why they re-soldered two of them already all right so we're going to re-solder
those and see if that gets us nice and strong all right so i literally think that will do it so i've
soldered them in with my trusty weller solder soldering iron here people now i know it's all
a mess okay don't worry about it we use it a lot it looks like this because i've been using it for
10 years we haven't cleaned it yet okay there is a link down below our videos to amazon okay
to this soldering iron or actually the newer one i think the new one is the wa wes 1001 or something
like that so it's a variable temperature soldering iron this is the way to go if you if you get one
that just plugs into the wall whenever we first started working on we tried to use one like that
or if you get one of the old ones that looks like a big gun they don't work very well for this kind
of stuff you need one that you can adjust the temperature on not just because you can tell it
hey i want it to be 645 degrees not just because of that but because whenever you go to use it
as this heats up the the thing that you're working on it will try to maintain that temperature
so because of that so we got that 632 right now let's see if i can get it to go down because of
that uh you don't lose you don't lose your temperature as much which is why you're getting
bad solder joints if you use a little cheapo that's going back up so i'm trying to heat this
entire thing up with the soldering iron and then it it has a little thermostat in it goes oh wait
that's not working and it turns the heat back up a little bit they work great and these weller ones
they last a long time this is the second one we've had i've got one at the house too i've
actually i've got one in jefferson too i've got three of them that i own right now but
we had one before this here at the shop that we stopped using but it wasn't because it stopped
working it's because we broke it into a million pieces by dropping it off of crap and it still
works but the case is all broke up and everything so we got them we got another one just so it would
look a little better um but there's a link down below um the video on amazon and uh if you go to
that link it pays us a tip for sending you there so you go check it out um and if you decide to
buy anything on amazon while you're there even if it's not the thing that you went there to look at
like if you go click and you see this soldering iron and then you decide hey i want to buy a sports
car instead it pays us a commission for you buying your sports cars we appreciate everybody that's
been doing that all right so i'm gonna slide this back in the game and we will uh we will see uh if
that fixes our flickering on the um display all right we got it back in there let's see if it
boots better okay it came right up let's see if the displays are strong the displays are strong
you can't tell because of the the camera if you're too close to it you can't tell okay see how they're
rippling they're not doing that to my naked eye because i'm blind i can't see uh 60 frames a second
it blurs together so to the but i can on the camera so i must not be blind i must have high
depth eye eye vision so on the camera they're flickering but here in real life you can't see
it because the strobe is much faster than 60 frames per second so some of the 60 frames that
you're watching right now are catching when the thing is off and uh it just makes it look weird
so you see the flicker but in real life it's doing it you know once every i don't know folks it's
it's it's science all right so that appears to have fixed the displays now this one's not on
it may be turned off um so we kind of have to test i hate to do it but i kind of have to test
rock steady baby just like aretha franklin all right so uh let's see now let's
let's close this back you know it's hard doing this with one hand somebody told me
that i should strap the camera to my head i would look really weird well i would look
really weird with the camera strapped to my head so i'm not going to do that
so you'll just have to excuse my
okay so let's see if we can go into test okay we did go into test four it's saying oh eight
and it's saying four what in the world does that mean um check to make sure that no switch wires
in parallel with the keypad are closed if any of these switches are stuck the game automatically
jumps to stuck switch test 94 is shown in the match credit display and flashes the numbers on
the conflicting switch in all four player displays by referring to the stuck switch
id table on page 118 we can pinpoint the culprit immediately all right so we've got several little
minor issues going on you see that so it's telling me that we're in mode 4 but that's because it
can't display the second digit on that display probably and then saying oh eight the out hole
the out hole has a stuck switch i wonder if that's because the ball is sitting in that hole
yes also 27 has a stuck switch that is drop target 3 and 11 all right that makes sense so you can't do
the uh test without the um without the solenoids all being up now it says 29 center rollover
button so now we know why they moved the switch out of the way it's because that button is
got an issue but you saw i just had a fix where it's not touching so we'll have to check that out
all right so number 29 is this center rollover and you saw how they had it bent out of place
probably trying to figure out what in the world it's not stuck look it's not even touching
let me show you a little pro tip on these valleys they put a cap on some of the switches the reason
for that was because if the ball hits the switch just barely for just a second the the cpu can't
see that the ball hit the switch so they put a cap on it to kind of stretch the pulse out a little bit
so that uh it would last longer the the the being shut would last longer basically to the
uh cpu but the problem is these little caps sometimes short together so we're going to
cut that sucker loose now it will work without it but it won't work as good without it it'll still
work but it won't um if the ball hits it really fast you may have that problem that's what the
cap's there for but if the cap shorts you get problems where the switch is stuck on
almost like i've done this before all right so uh let's see if we hold it down if it does it again
no i guess i just checked it at first or maybe now it doesn't work because i
bent it a little bit or something we'll have to mess with that again because we have to put
the cap back on there a new one okay so it says a flashing zero zero in all four player displays
indicates the switches are now open pressing the black test button should cause the game to exit
stuck switch test and go into lamp test okay and now it says 90 in the match credit display
so we've got most of the lamps are working there's a few that aren't i remember playing this now this
is a cool game um sometimes when you've got several lamps out like we've got four five six
seven eight nine it's because there's some kind of problem where there's a whole string of lamps
out on the cpu or something but this has a new cpu so it shouldn't be that so we're about ready
for our little keyboard thing i don't know that we're going to be able to see and another thing
you can't lay this on here big problems you got to kind of be careful folks i wonder if that's why
they made this apron plastic because i knew people were going to do that if there were no
stuck switches in parallel with the keyboard the game enters keypad mode
pressing keyboard clear button takes the game out of lamp test display zero in the
match credit display and the game is now ready for keyboard entry keyboard clear good okay so
it should say zero zero that's going to cause us problems but we'll fix that um so we kind of need
to go through all of this um but the ones that are most important are coins option and
somewhere in here it tells you like how many credits you need register number 17 credits per
coin menu this register contains a menu of up to 79 present uh preset coin credit coin option
settings each option setting is numbered below you'll find a sample portion say for example you
okay so let's see how we get in there i think we just hit 17 enter uh just press the number
of the register you want to see and press enter okay one seven enter okay so it's set for zero
one so that should be correct um as you press the numbers they should appear in the match credit
display when you operate the enter button this current the current information of the register
will be shown in the player one display if the register is not protected by the program new
information may be installed just press the numbers you want installed and they appear on
the player number two display this allows you to compare the old information with the new now press
enter and both displays should show the new information if you made a mistake just punch
in the correct number so it appears in player two and press enter again this inserts the
correct information of the register and both displays again show you the show the new numbers
this gets a bad rap from the pinball community but it's actually a really good system it's just
that keyboard deteriorates over time and that brand new one that he got from golf pinball looks
like a really good one okay so that's fine um let's see uh let's put it on free play
all right what's that there's another one though we just did 17 coins option credits per coin so
that's how many credits per coin but then there's something that is like how many credits does it
take to start bonus credits maximum credits balls per game match feature credit display
high score feature playfield specials high score sound mode that's also one that you need to change
28 all right so let's try this uh we need to clear to go back out and you hit 28 enter
so it's set on zero zero right now which is most switches are associated with chimes without
feature background but we want better than that we want most all scoring will have a noise effect
with background so we want to do three enter all right so we hit clear and now we're back out into
the main menu and we want to turn on free play so register 42 we want to put in 65 so 42 enter
65 enter clear all right um high score features high score to date
game over attract sound oh yeah this game has been designed to attract attention in the game
over mode by periodically saying quit talking and start chalking we kind of have to turn that on
don't we uh every five minutes so 47 we want it to be on one 47 enter one enter clear okay
bonus credits balls per game match feature playfield specials standard game feature
maximum credits yeah so i think we're good so let's go back out to game and i think you can
do that by just hitting game i think that probably maybe not maybe that won't get you
back out to the game let's try just turning it off and back on when you turn one of these off
too you got to wait a few seconds so you don't like have it flip out whenever you turn the power
back on okay so there's all that let's put the ball back in the out hole and see if we got any
luck nothing completely dead maybe maybe it's not hitting the switch let me hit the switch by hand
nothing well it's on free play or it should be i wonder if it didn't save the free play setting
let's try that we turned it off we hit that button i'm hitting the keyboard button who knows
what the one means i didn't hit it in the right freaking order all right keyboard clear let's go
back to our free play thing 42 42 enter it's still set on 65 okay good so we know that it's it's
actually saving the settings we just don't know why it's uh not allowing you to start it okay cool
well let me see if i can figure out what's going on with that all right so we're back in stuck
switch mode i confirmed in the manual yes that will do it so our center switch that doesn't work
now might be a clue but we'll see so basically you can go through like on other games and just
press each switch and see if you get a uh switch number on it so we're checking to see why is our
start button not doing anything oh look the start button works fine it's going to be a setting or i
wonder if just all the i wonder if all the solenoids can't work and so it can't kick the
ball out could be that have we seen the solenoids do anything yet i guess not because we haven't
got it working okay this top rollover isn't working but that's probably just misadjusted
that rollover does work i'm gonna hit the target behind the drops
yeah so i bet it's just the solenoids so there is a solenoid test let's try that next since our
start button works just fine the solenoid test is function 92 oh i can't get out of this test
can i because the it's using the freaking switches what if i hit this button there we go
that worked okay so i'm just gonna get out of this one all right yeah so solenoid test is 92
92 enter here we go nope no solenoids whatever we go that's our problem the fuse is blowing
so it can't start again because it can't kick the ball out all right cool well now we know all
right so the the solenoid fuse appears to be blown to the naked eye now you're supposed to
test them with a meter but if you can tell they're blown i mean look at it look at people
it's obviously folks it's blown okay take my word i'm not getting the meter out for that okay we're
gonna get the meter out for all the solenoids all right so if you've got a fuse blown it's
probably because something blew the fuse it's usually not because there's a bad fuse
and we caught the board being loose in the back before it had the chance to short against
anything and blow anything so the way you can figure out why it's blowing the fuse is if it's
the solenoid fuse it's probably because you got a bad solenoid or something that drives the solenoid
so if you just measure between the two leads on a solenoid a coil you will get some kind
measurement so i've got 11.3 ohms on this one i'm going to say that's a good one so you might
see that the the strange part is trying to figure out what it's supposed to read so this one says
15 ohms i'm going to say that's a good one too all right so this one is 15 ohms boy that sure
seems similar as one of the other ones that we checked let's check this brand new one that looks
like somebody's been messing with see what's going on with it 10.7 ohms i'm still going to go with
that's a good one all right let's do this one and it doesn't matter which direction you measure it
there's a diode on it but it doesn't matter 11.5 ohms okay i'm gonna say that's a good one too
oh what's that oh what are we looking at here 1.3 ohms i'm gonna say that's a bad one it's
because it's almost it's like one ohm folks that ought to be more than that
basically if you get under about two ohms it's probably bad 14.7 ohms that's a good one it
doesn't really matter if it's exactly what it's supposed to be 14.8 ohms that's a good one
now flippers coils are different 1.2 what 1.2 ohms again so we got two of them
that seem screwed up so we're gonna have to look into that now
yeah we'll have to figure out what's going on with that so this one doesn't seem right
and this one doesn't seem right like i said the flippers are a little different
because you got some switches on them endoscope switches 11.2 ohms on that one
12 ohms on that one and there's a tricky one that's up under the play field
because uh it's up there where you kick the ball out right so let me see if i can figure out
why this one and that one would both seem bad now it doesn't necessarily have to be the coil
it could be that the diode is shorted or it could be that the transformer the the transistor in the
back is shorted um on the board that runs it and it could be like a physical thing you might have
it where it's it's got a spot on the side where the the wires are shorted together or something
so you just kind of need to figure it out so how do you how do you how would you track that down
well if you remove one of the wires it's no longer connected to the board so you can connect it you
can check from there to there and then you know you're only checking the coil so if it's still
shorted you can remove one side of the diode and then check it and see if it's still shorted
and you can get to the bottom of it that way if you remove the wire and it's no longer shorted
and then you check the wires and they are still shorted then you get some kind of problem on the
board and it very if we've got two of them it very well could be some kind of physical thing
where a wire somewhere is touching something that shouldn't be um but you've got two different wires
you've got white and orange and black and red now on this 6803 they would run two lamps off of one
setup like one uh one transistor would run two lamps the way it was designed
i wonder if they did that with the solenoids so it's drop target ball three and drop target ball
seven so it's cj62 and cj6 no cj87 just enough to confuse me cj62 cj87 there's j62 it's ran by q
q12 and there's j87 it's ran by q16 so it's two definitely two different trend transistors the
way they do the lamps on these is they use the ac voltage the zero crossing where it's swimming
like a fish and when it goes up like this it turns on this lamp and when it goes down like this the
same transistor turns on that lamp and they strobe it so that your eye can't tell that they're turning
on and off on and off on and off it's amazing if you haven't looked into all that and you're
really interested in electronics look into the way they did the a and b lamps on valley 6803
6803 systems okay so uh yeah we got a problem where those two transistors are either bad or
the two coils are shorted all right so i took the wire off it was still shorted and i took the diode
off with the diode off it is still shorted so that that coil is bad it's completely burnt up
it doesn't look like it it looks just fine but it's bad so i'm going to remove it and we'll
just make sure there's no physical damage that's repairable and if not we'll put a new coil in all
right so now that i've got it out you can kind of tell by looking at it that it's screwed up because
look how see the black rings on it and how the paper is so uh brittle it's gotten really hot
now usually when that happens this seizes up where the the plunger gets stuck in there this
i guess it's like was on its way out so i guess it's just done all right now so you want to
replace it with a 20 so a 27 is the gauge of wire and 1300 is how many revolutions the a has to do
with things like the mount so like that's the two lugs on the end i guess they call it a because
it's the most common one so you might see one it's like b 27 1300 instead of having the lugs here
they'll be right next to each other or something or c 27 1300 might have one over here and then
one comes out over here or something it's just it's just a different mount you know so you can
actually use any of them if as long as they don't physically touch something you can also use a
similar one so if you've got like a 26 1400 it might work probably pretty similar if you measure
the resistance remember we were getting like between 12 and 15 ohms if you've got one the
numbers are close to this and the ohms rating is similar it'll probably work it might be a little
stronger than the old one or a little little weaker than the old one but you can get all
these too they make reproductions of pretty much every coil i've never found one that they don't
still make so all of the parts places have them pinball resource marco specialties you can get
them anywhere so let me see if i've got one in my stash and you know of course we had that other one
too let me say i've got one in my stash or something really close and if i don't we'll
order some that's what was in it this is what i found a o like i said it's a slightly different
mount it's just slightly longer than the other one but it should be fine looks like they've
switched out a bunch of these like this is a a n is that correct it's an a n 26 1200 on that one
which i guess originally maybe it was an a 26 1200 and on this flipper coil here they have a stern
coil and then this one up here has been replaced as well so there's a bunch of them that have
went bad on this i'm not really sure why but it looks like over the years it's burned up a lot
of coils all right folks i got that one in there and i had to put a new diode on it believe it or
not on the new old stock coil the diode was bent so we're at 13.7 ohms now compare that to
this other one here that's 14.9 ohms and this other one over here is
14.9 ohms and i say that because i swapped the original the middle one with one that's not
original so there's three things it's 26 instead of 27 and it's 1500 instead of 1300
and the diode's on the back so there is a diode you just can't see it it's behind this
so if you check it 14.8 ohms it should work pretty much exactly the same now you don't want to go
crazy with it you don't want to go way off you know and if you got time you're waiting on other
parts just order one but you know if you got one and it just it's a little bit different as long
as the ohms are similar within one ohm or so really within 15 20 or so it'll probably work
fine some people do it on the flippers on purpose like on the gotlibs they'll they'll put uh stronger
flipper coils anyways so anyway that's what we're going to do and um like i said there is a diode
that's on the back now whenever you put the power wire on it this wire it needs to go to the side
that has the band the other wire goes to the other side okay and uh also because of the way
it's mounted you have to make sure that that diode is not going to touch the frame or anything
and it's not everything's cool it's all good um i say that but why does it look like it's almost
touching right there because that's all the way through it sure looks like it's touching doesn't
it i'll have to look at that again just to make sure that's one that's again that's one of the
things that the different um mounts are just they're just made differently so that's what
the a stands for so you got to make sure that it's not going to touch so i'll check to make
sure that diode is not going to short out to the frame um but all the other ones i can't find any
other ones that are shorted so that should be our issue uh the switch here i cleaned so hopefully
that'll get that and i think we're about ready to put a fuse in it fire it up and see if anything
locks on or blows up so the reason it looks like it is the brackets are made with a little hip on
them so that they meet the thing and they're wider so it actually it looks like it might touch
but it bends down out of the way goes lower uh so i think we're good and i checked it with the
meter it's not touching all right now here's how we want to do this we're going to turn it on it
will not immediately blow the fuse what'll happen is a coil will lock on and then that will blow
the fuse so you got about three seconds so turn it on and then right back off and we'll see what
happens okay so nothing locked on that's why i didn't turn it back off but if you turn on and
something goes click like the solenoid comes on turn it right back off and it won't have time to
blow the fuse if you're putting a slow blow fuse in it which is what the the manual called for
and also there was a five volt a five amp fuse in there i put a six amp in because the manual
said it should be a six amp because there's three flippers seven amp if you have four flippers
all right so let's see if it'll start now now it may blow the fuse whenever this whenever it starts
still didn't start what in the world what in the world it's because of that other freaking fuse
isn't it there's a fuse under the play field yeah so there's a one amp fuse under the play field so
the the you know this is them showing all the different lines this is the solenoid voltage
goes through that fuse and then that's how it gets power to all of the
other coils and it's missing under the play field so we got to mess with that too
all right so i replaced the one amp fuse under the play field let's see if anything locks on
all right so uh you hear the sound kind of makes some pathetic noises the sound board
isn't going to need some work too it looked like somebody had serviced it but it didn't
sound that great did it what was that i mean i noticed what what was that okay so uh let's see
if it'll start now freaking nothing it's still got to be one of the settings it's got to be
um let's go into solenoid test again oh it's capable of it all right so all of the solenoids
are working and i've got a surprise for you are you ready that's right the sound board seems to
be working okay um hmm it's still got to be a setting so i'm going to go through some of the
settings and see if i can figure it out all right setting number 10 current credits it's supposed
to be zero through five and it has 200 000 stored in it so let's put zero enter keyboard clear and
i should be able to hit game to go back out the game over i'll check that again that's supposed
to be how that works but it's not all right so that we're just changing that one um if it thought
i had 200 000 credits and that's confusing to it it could be that that alone was enough to make it
where it wouldn't start let's see let's see maybe that'll get us there number 16 maximum credits
i got 3 120 000 that's probably not right that's i think we can allow it to have
40 credits it said that's a valid entry okay i'm gonna work through some more of these all right
so there were several more settings that just had crazy numbers in them but most of them were
audit things so it would say number of specials uh available or number of specials one three
million two hundred and fifty four thousand three hundred and sixty three i think that was the exact
number so i went through i reset all of that i think we might have something here now let's see
let's go back out the setting for the soundboard uh you this game apparently could have a squawk
and talk or the cheap squeak in it and this one has the squawk and talk but it was set for the
cheap squeak so um it may actually talk to us now um and there were a couple more settings that were
set outside of what they could possibly be so maybe that was enough to confuse it where it
can't start let's see i heard nothing okay i must have set the soundboard the wrong way let's see
i figured we would get some talking you know we kind of had some sound before
this is yeah the squawking talk hmm quit talking and start talking oh you know where i know where
i screwed it up it was probably saying something a second ago and that's why it didn't immediately
kick out because it was talking but we just didn't hear it so it's doing noise now okay
there's a couple of typos in the thing that's what screwed me up i think so cheap squeak or
squawking talk we've got the squawking talk so number 50 should be set to number one which i did
but there's a problem up here so the sounds mode it says 27 sounds mode and then you put zero
through three and then it says 28 german only zero through nine million but you know whenever
we looked earlier it said sound options are 28 that's the one that it said was german so 27 must
be the german so i swapped it back around um so let me go back in and change this back the wire
broke off the pot let's um we'll cheat all right so i put it in sound test by hitting that and
these pots suck
it's just a common problem on these boards that these little pots just suck
suck major suckage well folks that's where we'll have to end it today we just it's still got sound
board problems we got it where it started but there's lots of so there's a typo i'm pretty
sure it's setting 27 and setting 50 that we need to mess with um but we don't get any kind of sound
from the play field and uh if you press the test button you do get all the vocal tests so it's
trying but it's gonna need some more work it's just there's a connection problem or something
we'll figure it all out but it's just gonna take more time so uh that's where we're at now super
super oops too bad you chat you scratched
chalk up rack them up rack them up so see how many of them said chalk it up they repeated itself
that may be an issue too it may be trying to call out another um another another phrase and
there's a problem with the addressing or something so it's just repeating another one but anyway
we'll figure all that out on the next video hope you enjoyed it at least we got the thing
shooting up but we don't have it actually sounding right yet so we'll
work on that next time and until then have a good evening
