Fellsmere, Florida is home to the world's largest frog leg festival! The festival is held every third weekend in January. Enjoy fried frog legs, gator tail, homemade craft, a beverage truck and carnival rides, food and games.
Fellsmere is a short 3 hour drive north from Miami and a 1 hour SE of Orlando. If you have never tried Frog Legs or Alligator Tail then you should head out here and dry some of this delicious Floridan food!
Have you been the the Fellsmere Frog Leg Festival before?
About Me: My name is David Hoffmann and for the last decade I have been traveling around the world in search of unique culture, food and history! Since starting Davidsbeenhere in 2008, I have traveled to 71 countries and over 1,000 destinations, which I welcome you to check out on my YouTube Channel, blog and social medias.
I focus a great deal on food and historic sites, as you probably have seen! I love to experience the different flavors that each destination has to offer, whether it’s casual Street food or gourmet restaurant dining. I’m also passionate about learning the local history and culture.
The one thing you have to do before you die is come to Felsmere and eat a frog leg.
Frog leg heaven.
Good morning everyone. I hope you're having a great day.
This is David Hoffman from David's Been Here with my father Thomas Hoffman.
Today we're excited because we're taking you three hours north from Miami to Felsmere,
Florida to attend the Felsmere Frog Leg Festival.
They hold two Guinness World Records.
One for being the largest frog festival in the world
and the second for serving the most frog legs in a single day.
And they also have gator tail.
If you haven't eaten this type of food it's usually found in Florida and Louisiana.
I love gator tails but honestly I'm going for the
for the frog legs and I think the frog legs are amazing.
I had them years ago.
The French make them usually but I think we make them better here in Florida.
What do they taste like?
They taste like chicken but of course you know you're eating a leg.
If you're located in Orlando or you find yourself in Orlando it's about a one hour drive.
It's every January.
It's very close to Vero Beach right on the coast in Florida.
So this is Felsmere.
The largest frog leg festival in the world and we're here.
So I guess you can park anywhere now.
Yeah I guess so.
So we have a little bit of a cold front right now.
It's like 55 degrees.
Blue jacket or leather jacket?
Leather, leather.
Susan, pleasure, nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you.
We're going to be looking at some frog legs and eating frog legs and just having a grand old time.
We also have gator right?
Gator tail, everything you could want.
It's all here.
So we have over 100 crafters over here.
We have some entertainment out in the ball field.
We have the carnival in the back.
Gator tail dinners over here to the side.
We got beer.
We got camel rides.
We have a petting zoo.
We have an airboat frog pond.
So if you don't want to eat them you just want to hold the frogs or kiss it.
See if you can find your prince or princess.
We got that over there too.
So you know it's something for everybody.
It's a four-day event.
It starts the third Thursday of January every year.
This is our 27th annual frog leg festival and it's going on this year from January 18th through the 21st.
Let's get some beer and some frog legs.
So you said we're going to the frog kitchen?
Yes, we call it the frog room.
Are we going to see live frogs?
No, no live frogs.
But we'll go see some later.
We'll go see some live frogs later.
It's the old school.
It was the original schoolhouse for the city of Felsmere.
And the frog leg festival was very instrumental in raising the funds to save this building
because the county wanted to tear it down years ago.
But we've brought it back.
So they bread the frog legs and the gator tail over here.
Then they take the breaded product over to the fryers where they'll fry them
for their allotted amount of time.
And then they dump them into the bins to be weighed out into the dinners, the pounders,
the frog pops or the gator pops as the case may be.
You can have a pop like one leg or one piece or a skewer of gator.
You can have a pounder which is a pound of gator or a pound of frog legs.
You can have a frog leg dinner, a gator dinner or a combo where you get a little bit of everything.
So right here we have gator.
These are hutch puppies and right here we got the frog legs.
Let's go.
Thank you guys.
Thank you.
Bye.
So that's how they make the frog legs and the gator tail.
Now it's time to eat some.
Can't wait.
Hey, how you doing?
Look at the gators over here.
There will be frogs at some point, right?
What jumps on my face?
I'm going to scream, you know.
No.
Weird.
I got them.
Oh, but they're nice looking.
So there's your frog.
These are the frogs that we use for the frog legs.
This is before.
They will not.
These have been reprieved from the cooking pot.
These are the ones for kissing.
Maybe I'll turn into a prince.
Who knows?
These are our local guys.
Wow.
But they're very pretty.
I mean, it's a nice looking frog.
Yeah.
Kiss it.
Maybe it's a prince.
Well, we tell the ladies that there might be a prince in here.
They'll come by and give them a kiss.
Not all of them, but some of them.
Oh, yeah.
We need some beers.
What kind would you like?
What kind?
Okay, I'll try the Sailfish.
Sailfish?
Yeah.
And I'll try the Melbourne.
That way we'll try both.
So he's getting a Sunshine State lager and I'm getting the Sailfish White Merlin Whip.
This is the Florida lager.
This is from Melbourne.
For you, my friends.
Right here.
Thank you.
Cheers.
Oh, cheers.
I like that.
Thank you.
Pugs and beer, perfect way to start the weekend.
You're awesome.
I was gonna say, what happened there?
Thought it was me for a sec.
You guys want to sit and try salmon?
Yeah, let's do it.
And this is the gator.
That's the gator tail.
And this is...
Frog legs?
Uh-huh.
Okay, so what do you start?
I think we start with the frog legs because the frog leg festival, why not?
Right here.
Wow.
Those are like Arnold Schwarzenegger frogs.
So how do I dive in?
Do I just bite like...
Yeah, just bite right on in.
Just like chicken.
This is chicken.
Concept of them is way scarier than the taste.
There's like no fat.
That's the best part.
They're very heart healthy.
They're actually very high in protein, low in fat.
I don't know how healthy it is with fried though.
Well, you don't count that part.
It's a light batter though.
Yeah, totally.
Let's see.
I love it.
I'm probably gonna get another dozen after this.
It's actually very meaty.
I thought it would be more bony.
Yeah, no, not as much.
Hush puppy.
Frogs are everywhere, you should get them.
But the hush puppy was delicious.
Coastal, right?
Oh, the coastal was outstanding.
Gator.
Looks like a chicken nugget, but...
It's a cracker chicken nugget.
A lot more gamier.
Sticker, for sure.
Reminds me a little bit of deer.
Like, you know how deer's like very gamey?
It's like a very thick chicken.
Who makes the coleslaw?
We do.
Okay.
Yeah.
This is one of my favorites of all time.
Oh, thank you.
If we diced everything, it would be nice.
Thank you, dad.
Sue.
Hi, I'm David.
This is grinding cornmeal here.
Yeah, that's a corn sheller over there.
This is grinding cornmeal or corn flour,
the more times you put it in.
This is right off of gasoline.
That's a 1923.
That one there is a Fairbanks Morse,
which is a city's engine.
It runs off of diesel or crude oil or...
It's a predecessor of Steen's.
It took Steen's place.
Oh, that's where I got confused.
It's a 1916.
This is 102 years old.
Incredible.
The level of engineering people had at those times.
Look at that.
So as Susan said, they have a lot of people here
selling merchandise to a lot of vendors.
Let's see what they got.
1972.
Hi, I want to try some honey.
Yes, we definitely want to try some honey.
Yeah, they're all good?
They're all good.
What's the difference?
Okay, awesome.
We were here last year and came back again this year, so...
Oh, man.
Indian River Bee Company honey.
So Indian River is the county that we're in.
You tell me, Dad.
What do you want to start with?
We have a brand new...
Regular natural honey is my favorite.
Flavored honeys.
The key lime and the cinnamon are neck and neck.
Okay, so let's try those two and I'll try the raw.
I love honey.
Key lime.
Thank you.
I mean, you taste it.
No, no, no, you taste the key lime.
Nice, key lime.
It's the cinnamon.
It's really good in hot water.
It's good on ice cream and yogurt.
It's really, really good.
That's great.
The orange blossom is a favorite if you're from here.
Orange blossom.
Yeah, it's a combination.
Waffle?
Yeah, wherever the bees go.
It's usually not quite so...
That's the winner for me.
That's it?
The allergy blend, which is the combination of the two.
What was this?
That's the allergy blend.
Allergy blend.
Nice.
I'm taking one pound of the orange blossom and one pound of the wildflower.
Wildflower is just wild and orange blossom obviously is the orange blossoms.
You pay with your debit card on a phone.
Incredible.
Because we're still hungry, we're going to get a pound of gator tail and a pound of frog legs.
A pound each.
Enjoy.
Hey, how are you doing?
Hello, how are you?
How are you doing?
We're going to get that, yeah.
Crystal?
You like crystal?
What's crystal?
That's hot sauce.
That's like a little hotter Tabasco.
Let's do it.
Let's see.
More frog legs.
Crystal, my goodness.
This is a gator bite with crystal, right?
Just kidding.
Frog legs.
It really tastes like chicken popcorn.
I mean, it's like...
So when you come to the Fellsmere Frog Leg Festival, you're going to eat frog legs and gator tail.
So here is what a frog leg looks like.
Bam.
Why is it smoking?
It's hot and it's cold outside.
It's hot? Okay.
This is delicious.
They're good.
No fat.
Crystal.
This is like a thigh, right?
And this is the leg.
The thigh is full of meat.
Chicken drum in a way.
Crystal's not so hot.
The gator tail.
Oh, okay.
Well, let me get a big chunk here.
I'll try one with ketchup.
Gator tail.
If you have it like this, it's basically fried chicken.
Fried chicken tenders.
Sorry.
That's like a bit much.
Try again.
No, I'm starving.
Just start taking them down.
I am part of this show.
People like me.
I don't know why.
Comments are about me and not about here.
Your fan saying, look at him.
Look what he's doing.
That didn't take long.
It's getting cold.
You should eat it now.
Don't throw your phone away.
So this is the amusement park area.
It really comes to life at night.
As you can see, it's lit up.
We have like carnival food here.
We have burgers, hot dogs.
You were saying that there's deep fried Oreos?
Deep fried Oreos and candy bars.
Oh my God.
Puddle cake, nachos.
I think we have to try something before we go.
We have to try something.
We have to roll ourselves out of here in a wheelbarrow by the time we're done.
That's definitely not for me.
I don't even want that anymore.
If you eat anything, you go on that ride.
Get away from me.
Do the ride before the frog legs.
Maybe we should get away from here.
So every ride here is meant to get you really dizzy.
Don't eat before going on any rides.
So when you go to any carnival or state fair, you have to have some funnel cake.
It's deep fried dough dusted with powdered sugar
or topped with jam or chocolate syrup.
Delicious and wonderful.
And everybody should always have one at every fair you go to.
You ready for the funnel cake?
I'm ready.
She knows how to do it.
There's an art to this.
All right.
Ready?
You got to get it.
I probably won't be as nice as you are.
Funnel cake.
Deep fried batter with sugar.
I mean, how can you go wrong?
It's delicious.
You're running away with it.
Oh my god.
So good.
Crunchy.
Delicious.
Nutella on top too?
Yeah.
There you go.
Brings me back memories.
Yeah, yeah.
No, you go straight back to like my childhood.
Right?
Yeah.
Here, we'll rip it into threes.
Yeah.
And we'll split it, right?
You can have the tiny one since you're full.
Just save all your calories for...
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
It was a pleasure.
Thank you for everything.
Thank you.
It was awesome.
Just hop on out to the Frog Leg Festival.
Largest one in the world.
So if you're in Orlando or Miami and you're in January...
Third weekend.
Stop by.
Get out some frog legs.
Awesome.
Thank you.
It was a pleasure.
Now give me a hug.
Thank you.
Y'all have a safe trip.
Thank you so much.
I thought it was great, man.
Thursday afternoon, Felsmere, Florida.
Frog legs, gator bites, funnel cake.
We have a good time together.
It was awesome.
And the frog legs were delicious.
I mean, I like it way more than chicken.
Very lean gator tail with gator bites.
Oh, so good.
