Rep. Eric Swalwell of California resigned from Congress on Monday shortly after the U.S. House
Ethics Committee opened an investigation into him over allegations of sexual misconduct.
I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I've
made in my past. I will fight the serious false allegation made against me. However,
I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make, Swalwell said.
U.S. House Ethics Committee Chairman Michael Guest and Ranking Member Mark DeSaulnier
announced on Monday that the committee has opened an investigation into Swalwell.
A former staffer accused Swalwell of sexually assaulting her while she was intoxicated
on two occasions, once in 2019 while she was employed by him and again after a charity gala
in 2024, according to an April 10th report by the San Francisco Chronicle.
Monday's announcement came as the House gaveled back in after a recess,
and several Republican lawmakers and at least seven Democratic House members
publicly called on Swalwell to resign or face expulsion from Congress.
More than 50 of Swalwell's former staffers also signed a letter urging him to resign from Congress.
Remaining in either role while these allegations hang unresolved is an insult to every person who
has ever worked for him, reported to him, or placed their trust in him, the former staffers wrote.
