Jewish communities honor 6 million victims on Yom HaShoah

In its final hours, Jewish communities across the globe continue to observe Holocaust Remembrance Day this evening. 22 News reporter Christina DeMores joins us live in studio with a look at ceremonies in our region. This commemoration is also called Yom HaShoah and it's dedicated to the six million Jews who were murdered during the Holocaust in World War II. From this morning into the evening, members of the local Jewish community gathered at the Jewish Community Center in Springfield reading the names of the one and a half million Children killed in the Holocaust marking Yom HaShoah or Holocaust Remembrance Day. The names read out loud one by one to preserve the memories of those lost and ensure that they are never forgotten. The reading lasted for hours as people stopped to listen and pay their respects. The Jewish Federation of Western Massachusetts put on this commemoration and memory is only meaningful if you do something in present day and that's the action that we need to take to make sure that you know rhetoric doesn't turn into hate. Hate doesn't turn into violence. The observance continued this evening nearby the J. C. C. At the congregation benign Torah in Long Meadow, members of the community gathered in a moment of reflection, loss and resilience. Yom HaShoah is also also marks acts of resistance, including the Warsaw ghetto uprising and serves as a reminder of the consequences of unchecked hatred. The day of remembrance comes as conflict rages on in the Middle East and you can learn more about the J. C. C. And the Jewish Federation of Western Massachusetts on our website, W. W. L. P. Dot com.
