And we are officially live today.
Welcome, welcome everybody, welcome.
I'm so happy to see you right here with me today
for another Saturday together.
How are you guys doing?
Let me say hi to Irina,
which was the first to connect and to say something.
Happy Saturday to you, my dear.
And happy Saturday to all of you guys.
Where are you?
Tell me where are you from in the world
and let me know just how is your day going.
Is it going really good?
Is it going sort of good?
Is it going kind of good?
Or it's going just quite good today?
Let me know down here in the comments
and welcome, welcome, welcome.
So if you're new here, what are we doing here?
We're doing a lot of things.
Oh yes, if you're new here,
you should know that this is the place
where your English gets improved.
Oh yeah, we're going to improve your English
in the next 60 minutes,
speaking about a lot of very important,
useful and interesting stuff.
Oh yeah, absolutely.
And hello to Lolly.
Hello and welcome.
Welcome to you, to friends.
Welcome to our friends everywhere in the world.
Oh yes, in this live sessions,
we are live every Saturday at the same time,
every single Saturday.
We've been live since November last year,
if I remember well.
And there are people who just by following
these live sessions have improved their listening skills.
Oh yeah, because of course,
that you can hear, like you can hear,
like, once again, like you can read, okay?
Like you can read down here in the title,
there's a beautiful title that says
how to actually enjoy movies without any subtitles.
And what do you do?
What do you need to enjoy movies without subtitles?
You need to improve your listening skills.
Oh yes, so if you are watching these lives,
well, you're definitely on your way
to be able to learn how to actually
watch anything without subtitles, right?
So this is already an awesome thing.
So let me see.
Hello to Adele.
Hello to Adele and hello to Italy, right?
Because I know that you come from Italy.
So hello Adele and welcome to Italy.
Welcome to our friends from Italy.
And hello to Ilmar.
And I'm so happy you wrote down
that you've been waiting for this.
And me too, my friend.
I've been waiting for this moment,
for this Saturday, for the whole week.
Oh yes, and get ready because we've got
something very special today.
And I can't wait, really.
So now that we said a little bit of things,
it's the moment to start.
And like you know, guys, during these appointments,
we also answer your questions, right?
And maybe sometimes we have like real Q&A sessions.
This is not one of them,
but I've received recently a question
that was so important and so well connected
to what we are talking about today
that I couldn't help but actually
answering this question today.
So the question is from Saima.
Hello Saima and welcome with us.
Your question is so important
and I'm sure that many other people are wondering the same.
You're asking how can people with low self-esteem
and low self-confidence improve their speaking skills
when they're afraid of looking foolish?
And my dear, you're not alone, all right?
You, Saima, are not alone, all right?
I am on your side.
I was just like you.
I had your same problem.
And I'm sure that some other guys
that are following this live have your same problem.
In fact, you guys that are live with me,
let me know, write down, okay, do you have this problem?
Do you feel like your low self-confidence
doesn't make you speak English the way you want?
Even if it seems different topic, write it down, okay?
Because you see how everything is connected, okay?
You'll see how speaking and improving your speaking skills
is very much connected with your listening skills.
And I'm also about to answer this question
and giving you a very specific, specific question
and specific instructions on what to do
because I've been there, all right?
I've been there.
I know what it means to have a low self-esteem,
to have a low self-confidence.
I've been there, all right?
I was that, I was that.
I was definitely that.
So Lolly, you said that this is 100% true for you
and I totally understand you, Lolly.
Lolly, Saima, and many other people
feel like their English is so low that they can't speak
and when they do it, they're afraid of looking foolish.
This is completely normal.
So first of all, I wanna give you
a very specific instruction on what to do, all right?
And you know that in order to speak English,
you have to speak English, okay?
So first of all, try, all right?
But don't, I know it sounds counterintuitive,
but don't try by yourself.
Yes, speak English with another person.
And you're probably thinking, are you crazy?
Are you absolutely out of your mind, Albert?
I just told you I can't, right?
Okay, that's true.
I'm sure you guys have someone you trust,
someone part of your family, your mom, your dad,
your sister, your brother, your bestie,
which is another word for best friend, okay?
Speak English for just five minutes with them,
even if they don't understand you, okay?
Even if they don't understand you.
Just do it, do it only once, okay?
You don't have to do it every day.
Do it only once because,
and hello to Albert, welcome with us,
and also hello to Divyaja, welcome with us too, my friends.
If you have this problem, take a person you really trust,
a person who has been there in the past to help you,
a person you trust very much, okay?
And do it only for once, only for one time, okay?
You take that person and you speak with them
for five minutes in English.
You just say whatever you want, okay?
Say whatever you want.
Say hello, say your name, say where you're from.
Say whatever thing comes to your mind.
Do this, okay?
And now I tell you what to do with this.
You don't need to do this every single day, only once
because the moment you do this,
if you are speaking with a person who knows English,
they'll be able to reply, okay?
But you can also speak with people who don't know English,
okay, if your mom, if you feel very comfortable
with your mom, with your dad, with your sister,
they don't know English, that's okay.
I will tell you in a second how this can be helpful,
all right?
If you do this for five minutes,
the person will tell you something for sure.
If the person doesn't know English,
then the person will tell you something,
wow, I wish I could speak English like you.
If the person knows English, they will tell you,
wow, you did great, you're awesome.
Whatever the person said, and this is the important part,
whatever the person said, write it down, okay?
You write it down and you write it down in your own language.
You write it down exactly using the words the person said.
This, my friends, will turn these five minutes
into something for you.
Let's say that the person said, come on, you're good.
You're good, all in all, your English is good.
And you write down, all in all, your English is good.
This is what a person said about you.
If you read that phrase, every time you read that phrase,
you remember, you remember, okay,
this beautiful experience you had.
Your low self-esteem grows, and I'm doing this
and I'm speaking from experience
because I did this a lot of times, a lot of times.
For example, let me give you an example.
Let me give you an example of me, okay,
doing this on another topic.
I like cooking, but I actually love cooking right now
and I'm also pretty good, okay.
I'm a pretty good cook, I can tell you this.
But it wasn't always like this.
There was a moment where I couldn't cook.
I was 18 and I could not cook.
I was very terrible, probably like every other 18-year-old.
I liked to, one day, actually,
one day I brought home a friend
and we were hungry.
We wanted to eat something and I made a simple pasta dish.
I made a simple pasta dish.
You know, I'm Italian, so I love cooking pasta, of course,
and I made a simple pasta dish.
I made the only one thing I knew to do, right,
and it was very, very simple pasta, nothing special.
That was also the only thing I knew how to do,
just like you are growing your English
and you may just know how to say just a few phrases, okay.
You say those phrases just like I cooked that day, okay.
I didn't do anything special.
I just copied what my mom used to do.
That friend told me, wow, your pasta is amazing.
I love that pasta.
I love the way you made it.
And I said, okay, thank you, thank you very much.
That, I recorded that moment into my brain.
I recorded that moment into my brain
and it stopped there.
Like, I'm good making pasta.
I'm good making pasta.
Wow.
From that moment on, every time somebody,
I was inviting something to my place,
I was making the exact same pasta.
Nothing else, just that dish.
Yes, that grew my confidence
and this low self-esteem just got higher
and higher and higher.
I started experimenting.
I started cooking other things,
things I have never cooked before
because in my mind, I had that experience.
Now, every time another person, another friend told me,
I was good making that pasta, I would write it down.
Well, actually, to be completely honest and open,
I wasn't writing it down, but I was storing it here.
But it's more effective if you write it down, okay?
And that got stored in my mind.
Every single good comment got stored in my mind
and contributed into growing my low self-esteem
to the point, right now, I tell you, I'm good.
I'm a good cook, yeah.
And if I can do it, you can do it too.
Now, you want to speak good English.
You want to have a good experience
of you speaking that language.
But I know that oftentimes,
when you receive compliments,
if your self-esteem is low,
when you receive a compliment,
you tend to dismiss it, right?
You tend to say, yeah, but no thanks,
or no, I'm not that good.
You listen to this, you write it down, right?
You write it down because that way,
you won't forget it.
You will not forget it.
Now, let me see, because I received a few comments here.
I want to read them out loud.
In this situation of lacking of confidence,
I would think that I'm in a circumstance of urgency.
All right, Evan.
That's so important to make myself understood,
and once made that goal, I should be proud.
Well, if your goal is to make yourself understood,
you probably have to work on your pronunciation.
I may be able to help you,
and maybe you can reach me,
because it's so important.
You can reach me on my email address.
You can find it down here,
and I may be able to help you with that.
And Ilmar says, teacher, I'm on the stage
where I can't understand videos on YouTube.
Okay, now we get back on the topic, all right?
TV cartoons and sitcoms, but comedy movies is really hard.
I have to continue on that every day.
Let's talk about it.
Yes, Ilmar.
Ilmar, yes, yes, Ilmar.
Let's get back on our main topic, right?
How do we connect these two together?
Well, speaking helps listening.
Listening helps speaking.
So the two things are together.
The two things are connected, okay?
And one is connected with the other.
The moment you train your speaking skills,
using the information you received
by your listening skills,
you then also improve your listening skills
using that information from your speaking skills.
I know that that's confusing,
so let's get back here,
because I want to show you exactly what I mean, right?
Because it's almost as if I predicted, Ilmar,
your question, because I've already prepared
these three squares, right?
So we're talking about listening,
but we're also talking about speaking.
And what's here?
What is here?
Hmm, I will tell you later what is here, all right?
We can, for now, we can focus on these two parts here,
because the moment you speak,
even if it's just for those five minutes,
if you don't feel confident,
if you use what you're learning,
then you can, if you use what you're learning
in your listening, okay, this is why there's
a continuous circle, then the two things
will complement each other.
But for those of you who are new
and don't know what this is, okay,
this is a roadmap.
We are drawing for three,
this is the third appointment, okay,
with this drawing, and we're drawing a roadmap
going from, da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da, boom!
Ha ha ha ha!
Going from YouTube, all right,
and understanding YouTube without any subtitles,
all the way to, ba-na-na-na-na-na-na, boom!
TV series, yes, just like Ilmar said before, right?
So we are drawing a roadmap going from YouTube
all the way up to understanding and enjoying
a TV series or an epic movie.
The moment you start listening to what a YouTube video says
and you use that information into your speaking exercises,
that's the moment you, basically because you're using it,
you're able to continue your journey,
and just like we learned before, boom!
Ha ha ha, and I made a little mistake here,
as you can see.
I removed part of the YouTube word right here,
so let's bring it down, let's bring it back,
YouTube, all right, and you're able to actually,
the moment you're able to, you see,
like I said last time, explaining, right?
The moment you're able to explain,
explain what you just heard in English,
then you're also able to speak, right, using those words,
but then, you see, the two are interconnected,
that's the moment where you go to the next step,
which is comedy movies, right?
And I'm going fast because, well,
we have already reached this point, right?
We've already reached this point last time.
Now, let me see, your question is,
teaser on the stage where I can understand
the videos on YouTube, well done,
TV cartoons and sitcoms, well done, all right,
but comedy movies is really hard.
Okay, okay, well, if comedy movies is really hard,
your question should be, can I watch a TV cartoon
and explain, explain what I just saw in English, okay?
This is the question you want to ask yourself.
If you're able to watch a TV cartoon or a sitcom
and explain the content in English,
then, first of all, that's like an exam, a test, okay,
and if you can do that, well,
this means you are on the right spot.
If you can't, it just means it's too early
and you want to go back watching TV cartoons
and sitcoms, all right?
Also, by the way, for those of you who are here
and can't understand a sitcom and actually tried
and can't understand a sitcom, don't worry
because in the next episodes, in the next live episodes,
on Saturday Live episodes, I'm going to help you
understanding sitcoms, all right?
Things in life, sorry for the type, oh, there you are.
Oh, okay, now I understand, now I understand you a lot,
okay, don't worry, I was just reading,
and anyway, forget it, back to us.
So the moment you are here, all right,
there's only one step, but actually there are two, all right?
There's only one step, but there are two,
and the next step is thriller movies, bam!
Oh yeah, oh yeah, so let's first understand
what's the difference from a comedy movie
and a thriller movie?
Why are comedy movies easier than thriller movies?
Why, right, why is that, okay?
Well, the reason is all in the predictability of the story.
The reason is all in the predictability of the story.
This is why I'm mentioning specifically comedy movies
because a thriller movie is not predictable.
Do you remember, guys, last time I gave you a few examples
of comedy movies for you to watch, right?
I actually made myself wanting to watch Home Alone again
just this past weekend, all right?
And what I noticed is that, just like I said, okay,
but I had the proof of it, the characters in that movie
are stereotypes, are predictables,
like we have a couple of thieves trying to get into a house
and what they do is predictable.
Of course, it's funny because it's a comedy.
It's lighthearted because it's a comedy,
but you can understand, by watching at the scene,
you can understand what is going on.
But if you're watching a comedy movie,
that doesn't mean you can understand everything, all right?
It's very hard to understand everything.
In fact, you guys want to get used to,
you want to be okay when, not being okay,
you want to be okay even when you don't understand
everything, and hello, Paulino, and welcome with us.
Even if you don't understand every single word, it's fine,
okay, when you're watching my live sessions,
probably you kind of understand everything
just by asking you guys in the previous sessions,
I've noticed you guys understand me
for between 80 and 100%, this is good,
actually between 60 and 100, which is still very good, okay?
When you watch a comedy, in the beginning,
Umar, okay, especially for you
because you asked me this question,
in the beginning, you want to get used,
you want to get used on not understanding everything.
You want to get used to understand 50%,
40% even in the beginning, because you have images,
you have the story, you can, by looking at the expressions,
you can understand what's going on,
and you want to be okay, even if you don't understand
every single word, you will, all right, you will,
but you, of course, need practice, and, all right,
you need to practice what you're listening
with your speaking, this way you also improve
both the skills at once, okay?
So, what do I mean by this?
What do I mean by this?
I mean that, I mean something I did
when I was watching TV cartoons,
I loved to watch Family Guy, oh man,
I had another age, okay, and I loved watching it.
Those, as I told you already, I loved that cartoon
because it was so satirical and crazy, right?
When I was listening to something, I was often pausing,
whenever I was listening to something I wanted
to say myself, I wanted to be able to say it,
and then I was repeating it out loud,
and actually, we're gonna do the same right now,
because I wanna show you what I mean, all right,
and we're gonna do it using a sitcom
instead of Family Guy, because Family Guy
can be a little disturbing at times, okay,
it can be a little bit too much,
whereas when we're watching Friends, we are safe.
So, we're gonna go online here, okay,
and like we did last time, we're going over YouTube,
and we're going over Friends, here we go, all right?
Now, we don't care about the particular episodes,
and we just care about what they say,
so let's take this one, for example.
Let's forget about the advertising, okay,
they're always present, it's just the way it is,
and here we are, all right,
so now, let's listen to this together,
let's listen to this together, all right,
I'm gonna put it, you know, yeah, like this,
it's even better, let's listen together,
and I'm going to stop it, and as soon as I find something
I want to use, okay?
Paycheck!
The day I got my first paycheck,
there was a cave-in in one of the mines,
and eight people were killed.
Wow, you worked in a mine?
I worked at a Dairy Queen, why?
Oh, God, isn't this exciting?
I earned this, I wiped tables for it,
I steamed milk for it, and it was totally.
Let's see what she says right now,
because this might be the point for us.
Not worth it.
Not worth it, not worth it, all right?
Let's say you wanna just use this into a phrase, okay?
To understand, first of all,
you wanna understand what's not worth it, okay?
But first, you wanna make sure you understood well,
so activate the subtitles,
and this is when subtitles are useful, all right?
So activate a subtitle, not worth it, all right?
And then she said whose,
but that was part of the next line.
Of course, makes no sense like this,
so let's just bring it back a little, all right?
Worked for it, and it was totally not worth it.
Okay, all right, so now we have the whole phrase,
and it was totally not worth it.
Now, don't worry if you couldn't understand, okay?
This is just an example,
and in the next live sessions,
I'll show you how to actually understand something like that.
But for the purpose of this training, okay,
let me just turn the subtitles on this way,
and let me also see if you can see.
Yes, you can see the subtitles like this, okay?
And let's, oh yes, once you have the subtitles on,
you can say that she said,
and it was totally not worth it,
and it goes in the next line, all right?
It was totally not worth it.
Once you understand it, once you understand it,
and this is what I understood, okay,
it can be anything you understand.
You press pause, and you repeat it.
You try to understand the meaning,
and the next time you're in an English conversation,
you use it.
For example, it was totally not worth it.
What does it mean, right?
What does it mean?
Well, let's understand it.
Actually, everything is tied together,
so it was totally not worth it, okay?
This is the phrase.
What do you do, guys, when you can't understand?
What do you do?
Well, let me show you what do you do.
First of all, you want to get rid,
you want to eliminate everything
that is not useful for the phrase.
Any attribute, any adjective,
any of these words, any adjective,
any possessive adjective, any of these words
are not useful to understand the phrase.
So here we have totally.
Totally is an attribute.
We don't need it.
It was not worth it.
Next, you want to take away every negative phrase
because it's harder to understand a phrase
when it's negative, right?
Lolly, you said it right anyway.
Yes, the meaning is useless, okay?
It's true, absolutely.
At the same time, now here we are looking at
how to understand,
how to understand
confusing phrases, okay?
Of course, for you, Lolly,
this phrase wasn't confusing, okay?
But maybe for other friends of us,
this phrase could be confusing,
and this means that you want to simplify it, okay?
It was worth it.
Now, this was is past, okay?
So we want to turn this into present.
It is, okay?
It is worth it.
It's worth it.
Now it's easier to understand.
Of course, we need to understand worth, right?
And we also understand it, what's it, right?
So let's understand worth.
Worth is another word for value, all right?
It's like the attribute of value.
You can say that.
For example, this time is valuable.
This time is worth spending it, all right?
This lesson, I hope, is valuable for you.
So this lesson is worth it.
What is this it?
Well, what kind of value is this?
The value is in the maybe time spent doing it
or for other things, okay?
It was totally worth, it is worth it.
Maybe the money you spent, right?
Now, when you say it's worth it,
what you say is it's worth the time or the money, okay?
Now, let's stop here and let's understand once again,
okay, what she said.
Let's go back a little,
and this time I'm going to leave the subtitles on.
I mean, Chandler, look at.
Hold on.
First paycheck.
The day I got my first paycheck,
there was a cave-in in one of the mines
and eight people were killed.
Wow, you worked in a mine?
I worked at a Dairy Queen, why?
Isn't this exciting?
I earned this.
All right, now this is the moment
where she said what was she spending.
Wiped tables for it, I steamed milk for it, and it was.
I wiped tables for it, I steamed milk for it.
To wipe tables is this.
Hold on, let me see if you're watching, let me see.
This is to wipe tables.
You have a little rug and you wipe tables.
To steam milk is a classic thing you do
as a barista inside a coffee shop, all right?
So she was explaining,
she was explaining what she did for that paycheck, right?
Now, let's go on.
Totally not worth it.
Okay, okay.
So it was totally not worth it.
So what was it here worth it?
It was wiping tables
and steaming,
steaming milk, right?
So these things, they can be worth it or not.
Well, for her, they were not worth it.
So now that you understand this phrase,
you turn it back into the original phrase,
so you put not back.
So it wasn't worth it.
It wasn't worth it at all, right?
It wasn't worth it at all.
It wasn't worth the time.
For example, if I now start speaking Japanese
and you wanna learn English,
this time with me is not worth it, right?
It's not worth your time with me, okay?
For example, I hope the opposite, okay?
I really hope the opposite.
The point is now clearer, right?
Now back to our exercise.
Now you understand this phrase, okay?
You wanna use it.
You wanna use it in your next conversation.
So if you're talking about,
maybe you're preparing for an interview, okay?
For a job interview.
You want to also speak English, for example,
well then in that case,
you can say what was worth it or not worth it, all right?
Maybe for example, you can say you've had an English course
and it was worth it.
You've had a summer holiday in Japan
and it was worth it, all right?
You've had a diploma or a special degree in,
I don't know, economics and it was worth it, all right?
You basically wanna use this expression.
This is how you turn your listening skills
into your speaking skills, okay?
And this is extremely, extremely important, okay?
This means that when you're watching something, okay,
you're able to explain it.
And if you're able to explain it,
you can go ahead with the comedy movies
and if you're able to explain those,
you can go ahead with thriller movies, all right?
The key is always the explanation.
If you're able to explain in English
what you've been watching,
then you're able to go ahead by watching thriller movies,
which are way different.
They're way more difficult to understand
because they're not predictable.
When I say they're not predictable,
it means if you're watching a thriller movie,
you're not able to understand the plot
by just looking at the images.
You're not able to do that.
And this is why you wanna go through comedy movies first
because you're able to understand,
you take the experience and you bring it on
to the thriller movies, then you're able to watch them.
And let me tell you this, once again, by experience
because I'm doing something similar with Spanish.
I'm doing this mistake with Spanish, all right?
And I'm also going to tell you the reason
for this mistake of mine.
But first of all, Spanish, all right?
Because I live in Spain,
so I'm supposed to know Spanish, right?
I know Spanish, I can speak Spanish colloquially, okay?
But I have some trouble understanding.
If I watch a YouTube video in Spanish,
I understand it like that.
There's no problem for me
understanding a YouTube video in Spanish.
But I recently watched a thriller movie in Spanish.
Guys, I couldn't understand.
I couldn't understand
because I wasn't able to follow the plot.
I wasn't able to follow the plot
because it's unpredictable.
But a few months ago,
I watched a comedy movie in Spanish.
I was able to understand that.
That was a piece of cake.
I wasn't able to explain, though,
what I've just watched in Spanish.
And this is why I'm telling you
that it's a mistake on my part
now watching something harder.
But it's because I want to, okay?
It's because I'm not focused,
and this is the explanation for my mistake.
I'm not focused into learning Spanish right now
because, my friends, I want to use all my energies for you.
For real, I want to use all my energies for you
and for improving my and your English.
So for this reason, if I add a third language,
there are just too many languages and I can't handle that.
So for that reason,
I'm fine with not improving my Spanish.
If I wanted to improve my Spanish,
I would not watch anything that I couldn't understand
if I'm not able to explain the previous step first, okay?
Now, we said that there's an empty spot here
and there's something more here
because the moment you watch thriller movies
and you can explain a thriller movie in English,
yes, you can understand a TV series.
Yes, you can, but not entirely.
Not entirely because a TV series or an epic movie
goes on for a longer period of time
and you are basically facing way more expressions,
way more dialogues.
And to understand those dialogues, you need a missing link.
You need a missing link, which is right here.
And the missing link is stand-up comedy.
Stand-up comedy is extremely important, guys,
because it gives you the real, authentic,
original vocabulary people use
in their everyday conversations.
And this is what you actually need
to understand a TV series
and to actually improve your listening
and speaking skills further.
What's a stand-up comedy?
Let me see if you ever,
have you ever watched a stand-up comedy in English?
Let me know down here, all right?
Let me know down here because I'm curious to see,
to understand, to know your experience with this.
Meanwhile, I also wanna show you
what a stand-up comedy is.
Before I do that, I wanna prepare you guys
because stand-up comedy is rough.
Is rough, which means is very real, all right?
Is very real.
It's rough and it may contain
also some offensive language, all right?
So you wanna be prepared for that.
And anyway, I mean, we're all adults
and I'm sure you understand context
and you understand when to use certain language
and when not to use certain language, okay?
But there's way more into stand-up comedy shows.
So let me show you what I mean.
Okay, the beauty of stand-up comedy
is that it can be easily found inside YouTube.
So you don't have to go anywhere else.
Stand-up comedy, here you go, bam.
You can watch any of this, okay?
We can watch any of these
and they're going to have very authentic
English native kind of dialogues.
For example, we don't even need to get inside a video
to be faced with something authentic.
We gotta save the bees.
Gotta, right?
Which most of you guys
connect these words with slang, all right?
Non-slang.
It's not slang, it's natural language.
We're going to speak about this in the next episodes,
all right, but by watching a comedy show,
by watching a stand-up comedy show,
you'll be definitely faced with,
you will be definitely facing a lot of these expressions.
Let's get into this, for example.
So what is click-up?
Click-up is an all in.
That doesn't matter.
Now tell me guys, how much did you understand?
How much did you understand of what you've just heard?
Let me know, write it down here
because it's pretty essential, all right?
And just let me know what you guys understood.
I'm gonna let it go for just a little longer, okay?
So you guys can actually tell me your opinion
and what you can understand right now.
I see here Lolly said nothing, all right?
Who of you guys didn't understand anything?
Let me know.
And anyway, if you're here,
it's because you don't understand, and it's totally fine.
This is because they are at the very end of it, okay?
Just right before your TV series,
your favorite TV series, okay?
Right before that, you have stand-up comedy.
By watching and understanding stand-up comedy,
you'll be able to have the complete vocabulary
to understand any kind of native speaker.
I understood about 30%, I think you said, or 20 maybe.
Okay, okay, it's fine.
That's okay, that's okay.
It gives you the vocabulary
to understand stand-up comedy, all right?
We still have a spot up here, okay?
I'm going to fill this spot in in just a second
because as you can see, it's essential, all right?
But it's an essential missing link,
and we're going to talk about it in just a second.
But if you guys are here right now or here,
that's okay, this is the map you wanna follow.
This means, you guys, save this video and watch it.
Watch it in two or three months
and see how you compare with it.
What, or maybe even take a screenshot of,
take a screenshot of this map, okay?
So you have the road map with you.
So if you take a screenshot,
you can see how you compare where you are,
what you need to do, right?
That's all.
Now, stand-up comedy gives you access
to a lot of vocabulary, a lot of straight talk,
a lot of very natural vocabulary.
The beauty of it is that it gets you accustomed
to the way native speakers speak.
So the moment you are facing a TV series,
you'll be totally prepared
because you already know what to expect
because you are back into expectations, right?
What changes now?
What changes between this live session
and that comedy TV show,
that stand-up comedy show we just watched together?
Here, I speak slowly and you can follow what I said,
but during a stand-up comedy,
people speak fast and natural,
and this is why there's this missing link, all right?
So, if you understand me,
but you don't understand a YouTube video,
you definitely know that you wanna start watching
more YouTube, more general YouTube,
more towards your interests.
This will give you the vocabulary you need
because your interests talk about you,
talk about you and what you like.
This gives you vocabulary you then go on using
when you're speaking,
just by following my example with the French sitcom,
like I showed you before.
Once you're able to take a YouTube video in English
and explain it in English,
then you can jump on
into the TV cartoons and sitcoms wagon, okay?
Once you jump into this wagon,
you can definitely expand your vocabulary even further
because you are facing a lot of funny things,
a lot of jokes, and depending on what you're watching,
you're gonna be facing different characters,
but they will all be stereotypes.
This will give you the possibility to leverage,
to leverage your expectation,
what you expect from the scene.
You'll be able to understand by the images
what happens in the scene.
Once you're able to explain what happened in one of them
in words, in English,
then it's time to move on with comedy movies.
Once you're able to understand that,
because, well, once you're able to understand that,
you can get off the predictability wagon, okay?
These are pre-di-ta-ble.
Sorry, my writing right now is quite terrible.
Predictable, right?
They're really predictable.
Once you are off the predictability,
it takes some time, okay?
It takes some time to reach it, okay?
Once you're off the predictability,
you can move on into thriller movies
that are not predictable.
In thriller movies,
you're able to understand unpredictable speech.
What does it mean?
Why?
What are the benefits of this?
The benefits of this is that you're able
to then understand a conversation happening without you.
If you're learning English,
probably you've had a few experiences with natives.
If you've had any experience with natives,
you surely found yourself in this situation.
You have a conversation with somebody,
you understand everything, or maybe 70%.
That somebody has a conversation
with another native speaker,
you understand zero, right?
You understand zero.
This is because they are talking
about something you don't know.
This is because they're talking
about something unpredictable, right?
So if you train your unpredictable skills,
you can understand what other people say
when they're not speaking directly with you.
Then you can move on,
understanding better their natural vocabulary,
how they speak in real life,
with real people in the street,
like real, simple, down-to-earth street talk.
Rough, okay?
It's rough.
Everybody down.
It's rough, all right?
And rough means this.
Let me show you what is rough.
Let's go back online,
but this time we don't need YouTube.
We just need some images of rough.
Here is a perfect example.
Rough is the opposite of smooth, all right?
A smooth surface is very easy and gentle.
A rough surface like this, or this,
is not easy, no gentle, all right?
And this is rough.
This is rough.
Okay, this image is rough.
Standard comedies can be rough,
but they can also prepare you to real conversations, right?
This is why they're so important.
Of course, when you're here,
you're definitely able to understand TV series
and epic movies, because they're rough,
and they really get you ready.
They are like the military, okay?
Let me write this down.
M-I-L-I-T-A-R-Y, all right?
They're the military of the English language.
Ha, ha, ha.
It's so funny.
The military, do you know what the military is?
Probably you know, but just in case you don't.
M-I-L-I-T-A-R-Y, okay?
So this is the military.
They're rough, guys.
They're really rough.
Like, look at this girl.
She's truly tough, okay?
Because it's not easy to be a military.
It's absolutely rough, okay?
They really have it really hard, really rough, okay?
Well, sitcoms are the military of the English language.
If you wanna tough up, all right?
Or toughen up.
If you wanna, tough up.
If you wanna tough up,
if you wanna become a really good English speaker,
well, you go through the, oh my God,
you go through the stand-up comedy shows
and you get out of them transformed.
Your English gets out of them transformed.
And this is all for free, guys, hey.
It's all free.
This is all free stuff.
There's nothing you have to pay other than maybe,
I don't know, Netflix or Amazon Prime
or whatever other platform you need
in order to get, in order to watch this content, okay?
But other than that,
we're talking about completely free stuff, all right?
Now, I mentioned this block right here, all right?
We said that listening helps you speaking,
but there's a missing block here.
And your missing block is your,
is your pronunciation.
Your pronunciation.
And because it's very bad, I'm writing it down again.
Pronunciation.
If you want to understand TV series, movies,
stand-up comedy shows, thriller movies,
anything that is not predictable,
your pronunciation needs to equal what you listen, all right?
The way you speak needs to equal what you listen.
This part, guys, is the most important one.
This is the missing link.
This is because when you listen to something,
like everybody, you gotta filter.
You filter off anything that your brain doesn't understand.
And this is why you can't understand, okay?
Because they're not predictable.
You can't predict what's happening, all right?
If you fix your pronunciation,
I'm telling you with absolute 100% guarantee
you'll be able to speak good English.
And lucky for you guys, I'm here to help.
And next Saturday, we're going to include
your pronunciation skills into these live sessions,
and I'm going to help you decipher
French comedy, or French comedy,
French sitcom, all right?
With me.
I'm going to help you.
I'm going to help your pronunciation,
and wow, and that's gonna be awesome.
That's gonna be awesome, and I can't wait.
What else?
As you can see, you've enjoyed all this
without any interruptions.
As you can see, I told you, I promised,
only for you guys who are watching it live,
only for you guys who are watching this live with me,
there have been no interruptions,
and there will never be interruptions again, all right?
This is only for you guys who are watching it live
to give you a present because you've been using your time
to stay here with me.
So thank you very much, you guys.
I really appreciate you a lot.
I'll see you back next Saturday.
Have a wonderful week.
Cheers.
