One of the perks about staying at the Monroe Boutique Hotel

My name is Mark Kaplan
and I created the Monroe Boutique Hotel.
When I was a little boy,
my parents had a friend who lived here on this ridge.
And we also lived on a ridge,
but further to the west.
And I looked at this view and I decided that one day
I would have a property up here.
So what I did was,
I bought this property in 1976
and we knocked down the house that was here.
And I designed this place
and I was inspired by properties that I'd seen all over the world.
The design is, I would say,
it's slightly Indian Raj
mixed with Victorian
because the central feature of the property,
of the mansion,
is a Victorian three-storey courtyard
which sits in the centre of the house.
And the house is built around it.
Some of the bedrooms overlook the central courtyard
and we have a roof that can open and close.
We have a fair amount of functions here at the Monroe.
A lot of small weddings
because we can't handle a lot of people.
The corporate functions,
and we've had a lot of VRPs
who've passed through our doors,
although we've been open for a short time.
Today we are entertaining the Irish Minister of Tourism.
And last year we had Steve Wozniak from Apple here.
We have a lot of water features.
There are water,
there's this feature behind me,
cascades in the front of the house.
The mansion has an incredible view
of our garden city,
which is in the north.
We overlook Sandton City.
There are a lot of trees in our suburbs.
It's a garden city.
It's also the largest man-made urban forest in the world.
In the distance,
when it's clear,
usually in the late afternoon,
you can see the McCulliesburg Mountains,
which apparently is one of the oldest ridges
because it's mountain range in the world.
We also have a Rolls Royce Phantom,
which we use to ferry brides to the property.
And of course,
if you're an international traveler,
or even a local traveler,
if you arrive at the airport,
we'll come and collect you in the vehicle.
Generally, our prices range
from about $300 a night to $500 a night
for our Presidential Suite,
which has a steam room and a sauna,
as well as a jacuzzi bath.
We have, at the moment, five suites.
Each one is individually decorated
with pieces and objects
that I've collected through the years.
Cuisine is fine dining,
and a fine dining experience
is what you'll get here at the Malraju Camp Fodera.
As Mark just said,
this hotel is not just like any other hotel.
It's an oasis within Johannesburg,
and it's a very unique experience
because it feels like you're in somebody's home.
It's very easy to get pampered and spoiled here,
but that's okay with me.
