This is a video detailing the calculation of your ship's position using the crossing of two bearing from two different fixed objects.
I have compared the obtained position with real-time GPS fix to show what's the difference and why its caused.
I believe that you will find this video useful for your future career paths.
Good afternoon, so this is also a different method of position fixing.
This is basically you are fixing your vessel's position using two fixed objects.
That means you have two beacons or one beacon or a lighthouse or whichever you can observe from the
vessel. Remember all this has to be fixed objects, you cannot use a buoy. So you take the bearing
of one object, again at that same time you take the bearing of the second object and as soon as
you draw your bearing line on your chart from both the objects, you will get a crossing of
both the bearing lines. So the point where both the bearing lines cross is basically
the position of your vessel at that instant. This is chart number 2403. Now the vessel is
anchored off Singapore OPL. That is the current anchor position and the lighthouses we are using
will be Tanjung Barakit and the Horsburgh lighthouse. So the vessel's current heading is
353.2 gyro. So to take the bearing, we will be using the azimuth circle. The operation is very
simple. We will align both the holes and look through the holes. You can see the string attached
so the light or any fixed object has to be aligned and should be watched through the string.
So once you watch through the string, you will get a reflection from your gyro repeater. How it
occurs, I will turn the azimuth circle and show you. So at the bottom there is a screen
with a string attached. That is a string. So it will align with the gyro repeater and
the reflection will be captured on the mirror. That is the mirror. So now let us take the bearing
of Horsburgh. So Horsburgh lighthouse is flashing once every 10 seconds. I will show you the flash
at night. In the screen, what you are watching is the flashing of the light. So right now the
flash is going to come. That is the flash. We will take the bearing. The bearing, current bearing is
241. Now we will go to Tanjung Barakit. It is flashing twice every 10 seconds. So that is a
I will show the flash two more times. Again it has flashed and this is going to be the last flash.
That is the flash. So we are taking the bearing. You can see through the string, the light.
The bearing is 200. Now let me transfer the bearing using the compass rose. So that is
200 degree true and I will transfer that line to Tanjung Barakit. Tanjung Barakit,
I will take the bearing from the star. So once I place my parallel roller on the star
and draw a line, I will be getting one bearing line. So that is one bearing line.
So the next bearing was 241. I will again take 241 from the compass rose and I will transfer
that light, sorry, the line to Horsework Lighthouse. So that is the Horsework Lighthouse
from the star. Star is the middle. So from the star I will draw the bearing line. So the point
where both the bearing lines meet is basically my position. That is the bearing line. So you
can see both the bearing lines have met and that is basically my current position. So let us cross
check it with the GPS. So my GPS position at the moment is this. So I am going to plot a position
using parallel roller and the divider. That is my longitude. Longitude is 104 degree 40 decimal
1 approximately and latitude is 1 degree 28 decimal 65. Now I am plotting the position.
You can see the position is almost exactly where both the bearing lines have met.
So I believe you got a good understanding of how to take two bearings from two lighthouses
and where both the bearings meet will be your ship's position. We have confirmed it with
the GPS. I believe you got a good understanding of plotting position using two bearings. Thank you.
