House Speaker Mike Johnson holds a gaggle on Capitol Hill.
Mr. Speaker, are you planning on putting the DHS, are you putting on the DHS?
Well, this is a very important visit at a very important time.
I was honored to go back in January to be the first Speaker of the House in this country
to address a joint session of the British Parliament.
It was a great event, and I emphasized there, obviously, the celebration of our independence 250 years ago,
but also the special relationship that exists between these two countries.
That friendship is very important right now, and our allies are very important to us.
There has been some strained relations because of things happening internationally,
but I think the King's visit is very perfectly timed.
I think he sees it that same way.
He's going to have an enjoyable experience here.
He'll be welcomed with open arms, and I think he'll address celebrating with us our independence
and also emphasizing that special relationship.
Speaker Johnson, are you going to put the DHS bill on the floor?
Yeah. I mean, look, Saturday night was a surreal experience.
I mentioned in an interview a little while ago that the President's now had three failed assassination attempts.
I happen to be with him for two of them.
These things are becoming all too common, and we've got to be very careful about that.
What happened Saturday night is, as you all know, in that giant ballroom,
there's an upper deck sort of that is around the corner, and I was up there in a group of people taking photos,
so I didn't even hear the gunshots.
And the first thing I knew, half my detail team ran behind me, grabbed by the shoulders and pushed me about six feet away.
The other half of my team went and grabbed my wife Kelly, and she met me outside a few seconds later.
They took her out another door.
We went down into the basement of the hotel in our motorcade and sat in the trucks
and awaited further developments.
It was a scary experience for everybody there.
I'm grateful to law enforcement, to Capitol Police, who were excellent in doing their job.
Secret Service did a great job valiant people there.
But obviously we do need to look at security measures when you're going to gather that many people there.
You can think of it, you have the President, the Vice President, Speaker of the House, that's the first three in line.
I don't think Chuck Grassley was in the building but, you know, been in charge after that.
Half the Cabinet at least was there.
They're going to have to reevaluate this.
This is why we need the ballroom. It really is.
The President's right about that.
We need a facility that is secure enough to host events like this without having major national security concerns.
Speaker Johnson, can I ask you about DHS funding?
Are you planning on putting DHS funding on the floor this week?
We have to move DHS funding because it's urgent.
As the Secretary of Homeland has said, we're out of money.
He's out of money at the end of this week.
And so Democrats have been playing games with this.
It's very dangerous, as demonstrated Saturday night.
We've got to get the job done, I'm convinced.
But the Senate passed their bill.
The Senate passed their bill.
What do you mean?
The special committee looking into what happened Saturday, sir.
