Hello everyone, I'm Ioannis Kalafatis and together we'll learn more about the Mediterranean
cuisine and diet.
Today we'll discuss and see a little bit Greek breakfast.
We'll see and I'll give you some examples of what it is.
I'll break it down into two sections.
One of them is how Greek breakfast looks like in a Greek household, within a family.
This category applies only if you have already been with a Greek family, so you've got a
Greek grandmother that will make that for you, if you have a Greek family as good friends.
The second category will be when you go outside in the morning, what can you find in Greece.
Some principles that you need to keep in mind.
Greek breakfast is not very heavy, it's very light and has very few items.
So we'll start with the first category in the household, Greek household.
It's very common in the morning that you get a couple or some slice of cake with oranges
for kids or with Greek coffee or Turkish coffee.
Most of them are the same, same way they're cooked or boiled.
Another item you can find will be fried eggs.
Yes, you can find scrambled, yes you can find omelettes, but it's very common to find fried
egg cooked simply in olive oil, salt, pepper and oregano.
That's it.
And bread.
If you have watched our fundamentals of Mediterranean cuisine, you've seen how important bread is
for the Mediterranean diet and where it's placed on to the Mediterranean diet pyramid.
Another thing is we have got, it's something I cannot find in the UK until I ordered it
online.
It's like a rusk, it's like dehydrated sandwich bread that we literally spread, usually vegetarian,
I don't know why, you can do butter if you want, spread on top and then it will be either
jam or honey on top.
And that will be accompanying Greek coffee.
In Greece there is, in general, I know I say coffee, coffee, it's very popular to drink
coffee.
Most of the people like coffee, so there's several varieties you can find, including
some that you can find abroad like cappuccino.
So first we'll start with Greek coffee, it's the most popular, especially in the winter.
In the summer it dies out a bit, but it can be enjoyed early in the morning when it's
not that hot, because it's a hot coffee, you boil it.
Then you've got Nescafé Frappé, and then you've got cappuccino, which is a hot coffee
again during the winter or autumn or spring, but during the summer we have Freddo cappuccino
which is iced.
Although you can do a bit of research on the internet, I'm not here to talk about the coffees
that much.
There's also a lot of people that smoke.
So many, many people during their breakfast just smoke coffee, plain.
I'm not suggesting it, it's not healthy, but this is what people do.
Yeah, mainly this is the three things, so I'll say eggs, the rusks, and then cake.
That's the main thing you can find in the Greek household.
Now about the second category, when you're like in Ireland or in holidays in Greece and
you're wondering, okay, I'm in Greece, what can I eat?
So anymore with the tourism, you can find even full English breakfast, which is a very
heavy breakfast, with coffee or tea or how it normally would be, more like in hotels
and restaurants.
However, if you're walking the streets, you'll notice there's a lot of puff pastry shops,
so they're coffee shops, but they sell puff pastry.
And it's very common to have like spinach pie, spanakopita, or tiropita, like cheese
pie.
These things that we've made here on the channel, so you can go have a look on the video, get
an idea what they're like.
You can make them at home as well, they're not that hard, and it's very, very tasty,
very healthy.
You get sausage pie, or you get pizza, and there's all this kind of puff pastry food
that you can find in a simple coffee shop.
You can buy cake from them, if you have booked your own little flat for a couple of days,
you can go to the supermarket, you can buy and make whatever you want, I'm just preparing
you.
