In this episode we tackle one of the quietest, most scenic and arguably toughest routes up Mount Snowdon in Wales - The Watkin Path. This route was first opened in 1892 by Prime Minister William Gladstone. Created by Sir Edward Watkin from an existing quarry path it was also the first official footpath in Great Britain!
Now it's starting to get into semi-rock climbing now.
Hi, I'm Lavi and this is Oli.
Over the past four years we have been on some epic adventures around the world.
Now after converting an old van into our new home on wheels, we are ready to hit the road
and explore the wonders of Europe.

Good morning everyone.
Welcome to our odyssey.
So today, this morning, we are in Snowdonia National Park in Wales.
In sunny Wales.
And it is a beautiful day in the park, absolutely spectacular, the perfect day to climb a mountain.
So today we are going to tackle the highest peak in Wales, the highest peak outside of
Scotland.
It's called Snowdon.
It is 1,085 metres high or 3,560 feet.
So yesterday we were having a little look at all the different ways you can go up and
there's like six major ways that you can get up this mountain.
We were having a little browse through each one, reading what they're about.
Oh, that looks nice.
And then we saw this one called the Watkins Track and it said, this is the most challenging
of all, but it has the greatest reward.
And we were like, yes, that sounds like the right thing for us.
So literally, we're starting pretty much at sea level here, which means we have to pretty
much climb the whole 1,085 metres all the way to the top and come all the way back down
back to the car.
And this before it gets too dark.
We parked up the van in this layby here and we're about one kilometre from the start of
the track.
We just had breakfast.
We picked up all our stuff and we are ready to walk the road.
As well, it's just nine o'clock, so we are really good in time.
So it's supposed to take us about six or seven hours to get up and down this thing.
So we better get started.
So let the adventure begin.
Oh, yeah, this is it.
This is the start of the track.
The Wodkin path or whatever that says.
So tackling the most difficult path up Mount Snowdon, let's go.
OK, starting quite easy in the nice forest, shaded from the sun.
Nice and cool, very refreshing.
Yeah, and not that steep so far.
It's quite nice and easy.
Quite nice and easy.
Got some nice steps here.
So, so far, the Wodkins track is all right.
I mean, this is more elevation than you have to climb.
How about that?
They only have to do about six or seven hundred metres on their last day.
That means we are ready for Everest.
If we get to the top and back down, then we'll put it in the calendar.
Well, we just found out that the Wodkin path was Britain's first designated footpath
created by Sir Edward Wodkin and officially opened by Prime Minister
William Gladstone in 1892.
That's quite a long time ago.
So I can imagine many a foot has walked up this trail.
So that's really cool.
We are currently here and we're going all the way like this
to the top of Mount Snowdon.
There you go. Rock and roll.
So we are just maybe 1km in and we have to stop all the time
because it's so beautiful.
And look at this view.
So you can see a waterfall just over there.
We talked to some people and they are getting their swimsuits ready and everything.
And they just want to slide down and have like a nice day in the pools.
And we are thinking, oh, that sounds great.
But we have to wait until we're coming down to do that, I think.
We can't just do it now, can we?
No, we have to get to the top, come back down and then we can go for a swim.
But it's already epic now.
We've come out of the forest and now we're just into the open hills.
So it's epic.
Just have a look here.
You can see a million bluebirds.
I mean, it's just insane.
It's so epic. It's so nice.
OK, so we are now at the top of Mount Snowdon.
We are about one hour into the hike now
and it's starting to get serious ahead.
Look at that. Oh, yeah.
Yeah, I can't really see the track.
Can't see it, I don't know.
Everything just goes up in front of us.
Oh, man.
Already getting some epic views coming behind us.
But I'm sure that's going to get better and better as we get higher up.
One hell of a staircase.
It's steep now.
Yeah, it's starting to get steeper.
I think we can see the summit.
I think. I think so too.
Look, I can see some very, very tiny people up there.
For that bit there.
So actually, we think that might be the summit.
But we're still very far away.
They look like ants.
Can you see them?
Probably can't see them.
We thought that this one
was the peak, but actually now we have revised that
and we now think that that one is the peak
because you can sort of see a trail going up to the top there.
And I can see some people up there.
I think we have to go round and up there to the top.
Keep our national parks clean.
Hello. Oh, there he goes.
OK, this is our two hour update into the Watkins track.
The summit still looms above us.
And also now you can see the ocean just about.
Just over there is the ocean.
So now we've got a double epic view.
Just yet. Let's do it.
Let's get to the top.
Our lunch.
Now we're doing the final bit to get to the top, which is up there.
Hopefully we'll be up at the top within an hour.
You can see where we came from all the way down there.
And then now we've got to go
just up there. Nearly there.
Oh, my God.
Now it's starting to get into semi rock climbing now.
Look at this up here.
Pretty, pretty crazy.
Just keeps getting better and better.
Good. I can feel my whole body again.
It's good. It is hot today.
There's a lot of sun.
And halfway up the final bit.
Yeah, I can't see the top anymore.
I can just see rocks.
It's pretty crazy. Look where we are.
And look at the edge here.
Oh, my God.
They don't call this the most difficult track up Snowdon for nothing.
I tell you that.
Oh, my God.
I'm happy again.
Yeah, we've just come over the ridge
and this is the view on the other side, which is just as epic as the view we just had.
Whoa, look at that.
A bit of a go, but not that much anymore.
No, no, no.
Look, looks to me like we can pretty much see the top.
So final push.
I can see something.
There's actually a building.
There is a building at the top.
Look, that's not exactly what I expected.
But, you know, how are you feeling?
A little bit exhausted at the moment.
Yeah, it's been pretty crazy climb.
And the fact that you can just take a train up here is ridiculous.
But hey, you don't get to see what we saw.
Maybe the next time we take a train up.
Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah.
Once you've done it once, then that's it.
After that, you can just train up, train down all you like.
Yeah, I can definitely see the last bits coming up up here, up to the summit.
And it looks super busy, full of people.
Oh, yeah.
Cool.
So it looks like there's a summit point up there
and there's also a big queue of people waiting to take a picture there.
And these guys are drinking some beer instead.
It's like, wait for a picture, have a beer.
I guess we'll have to get just just shy of the summit, then.
Let's go to the nearly summit then.
That's fine.
Oh, yeah.
I think we'll call this the top because otherwise,
really, that's the top up there.
But close enough.
Despite the crowds, it is absolutely epic views up here.
Yeah, it is absolutely amazing.
Truly the best view in Wales.
OK, we've come away from the crowds and we're on our way back down.
There's a sheep.
He's trying to fight his friends.
He's like, he's like, guys, where are you?
They're like, we're down it. We're down in the valley.
We're eating grass. What are you doing?
He's like, oh, bugger, I went the wrong way.
I think we definitely made the right choice to take the Watkins track.
Compared to what I see up there with all the people and those other routes.
Yeah, this is definitely the most epic route to take.
I think so, too.
Definitely a challenge, but it's definitely an epic route.
We have reached our seventh hour on the trail
and we've done most of the major downhill
and we're sort of coming into the bottom of the valley now.
But yeah, we're starting to get pretty tired.
Online, it said six to seven hours.
So it's been seven hours.
But I actually think we've probably got another hour until we get to the bottom.
Probably.
And then I'll be ready for a nice dinner.
It's currently 4.30.
Yeah. So, yeah, it was really good that we started quite early in the morning
at 9.30 so that we could sort of really take our time and enjoy it.
The thing is, when you're doing such a long walk,
you know you're going to have like a seven, maybe even eight hour walk.
Just take it nice and easy.
You know, take it one step at a time.
Don't try to go too fast.
Don't try to get up there too hard and you can make it.
You know, otherwise you just exhaust yourself.
You just burn yourself out before you get to the top.
So there's some water.
Maybe. Yeah, we'll see.
We'll see.
Let's see in a minute.
All right. We can see the road.
The road at the bottom.
The end is in sight.
Oh, yes.
OK, so we have decided that we are going to go in the water.
So we're just making our way down.
Ice water.
If we were feeling tired, this is sure going to wake us up.
Ice mountain water.
So which pool is our pool?
I don't know.
We could just take the first one here.
I don't mind.
Yeah. All right.
It's time to get cold.
Look at the view.
We are back in the forest,
which means we are pretty close to the end now.
We can see the end.
Back where it all began.
Yeah. About eight hours and 15 minutes ago.
Or 32,825 steps.
That's not bad.
That is a lot of steps.
Well, here we are.
This is our gate out.
Nice.
Walking path done.
Look where we are.
We're back at our home.
So we made camp for the night.
Check out our view.
This is, I think, at least five stars.
I would even say ten stars.
It was absolutely amazing.
Amazing day.
It doesn't get better than that, hey?
So I think that concludes our epic adventure for today.
We hope you've enjoyed it as much as we have.
And yeah, we're going to cook up our dinner.
So good night.
