Today we're we’re mixing up the California Root Beer—a deceptively simple cocktail that transforms a few ingredients into something surprisingly nostalgic. This drink combines the smooth neutrality of vodka, the herbal vanilla complexity of Galliano, and the deep roasted sweetness of coffee liqueur, all lifted with a splash of soda water. …
Welcome to booze on the rocks.
My name is David Edwards, and it's great to have you here today.
We're going to make a California root beer.
Now this cocktail is supposed to taste like root beer in a glass, and it's
been around since at least the eighties.
And if you know where the idea originates from, please let me know down in the
comments below, because I also know this is very similar to a bartender's root beer.
Now, having said that there's at least two other recipes I'm aware of.
One of them has beer.
The other one has some form of cola, either Pepsi or Coke, depending
upon that person's preferences.
Now, this version is stronger and it's going to give you a little bit of a kick.
And there's only four ingredients for ingredients.
Having said that you need a little bit of soda water or sparkling water.
It doesn't matter what you prefer.
Doesn't matter what your preferences are.
Your next ingredient is a little bit of vodka.
I'm using a little bit of Finlandia.
It's 40% ABV and you need galliano.
Now I am using a galliano vanilla.
It's 30% ABV.
The recipes I've seen just says galliano.
Nothing specifically says whether it's the vanilla or the Los Antico.
The other thing you need is coffee.
I'll cure it.
Now I'm using Kahlua.
It's 16% ABV, and you're going to get a fair amount of sweetness from this
area and a little bit of dilution from these, but this is a simple building.
So what we are going to do is fill this up with a little bit of ice and you're
going to start with your vodka.
Now you need a good sized pour of this of an ounce and a half or 45 mils.
Next.
We're going to follow this up with your galliano.
And what I want to know from you, have you had this before?
Like, when was it?
Uh, was it seventies or eighties?
And is this a recipe you saw, or did you see something else?
Now you are going to use one ounce or 30 mils of galliano.
After this, we're going to move on to your coffee liqueur of choice.
If you want something a little bit less sweet and maybe something
like a Tia Maria or a Mr.
Black, um, but you do need the sweetness that you're going to
get out of both of these liqueurs.
Now you need about three quarters of an ounce or 22 and a half mils.
Your fourth ingredient is your sparkling water.
Now you're just going to top up the rest of your glass to
about two ounces or 60 mils.
All right.
Once you've done this, grab yourself a spoon and we're just going
to give this a really good mix.
Visually.
It's a little late for a root beer, but you've got a nice light
Brown color with the ice.
It's fantastic.
Um, easily eight out of 10.
You know what?
That does taste like root beer, slightly coffeeish root beer, but really good.
You get that coffee, you get some of the herbalness from the galliano, but not
much, actually well blended with all of these ingredients that I actually
thought that this would loosen it up a little bit too much or thin it out.
It really doesn't 8.8.
If you like cocktails like this.
Oh yeah, this is really good.
Uh, take a look after the recipe card right over here.
