Till The SEED should Come Galatians 3 continues the study on dying to the Law of Moses (Torah). The text has been grossly misinterpreted by those who believe that Law was done away at the cross. http://www.AllThingsFulfilled.com
This creates problems on what is meant by "till the Seed should "come". Does it means Christ's coming in birth? Does it mean his revealing to Israel at his baptism by John, the Baptist? Does it mean his "going away" in death? Does it mean the Day of Pentecost during his absence?
A number of questions must be answered regarding the word "come" and what it means in the context. "
We have addressed the issue both from a contextual and linguistic point by citing the scholars on the meaning of the word come as used in the aorist tense of the Greek.
Most importantly, we sought to respond by addressing the actual language of the text and in our research, demonstrated that it cannot be made to teach that the Law ended at the cross.
Hello, it's William Bell. Welcome to All Things Fulfilled. In this video I want to talk about
Galatians chapter 3 starting at verse 19 on a subject that relates to whether or not the
Law of Moses has ended. We have been having some discussions with a group that believes very
strongly that the Law of Moses was done away at the cross and as a result of that they use passages
such as Galatians chapter 3, Colossians chapter 2, and Ephesians 2 to suggest that that is the case.
What I want to do in this video is cover one of those texts which is going to be Galatians
chapter 3. The point will be the same from each of these passages and that simply means
that if we demonstrate that Galatians chapter 3 is not discussing the end of the Law at the cross
but that it actually continued beyond the cross it would therefore suggest that either there is a
contradiction between Galatians chapter 3 and Colossians 2 and Ephesians 2 and other passages
because there are more or it would demonstrate that those passages are teaching the precise
same thing as Galatians chapter 3. So let's go ahead and get into the study. We're going to
begin in Galatians chapter 3 and verse 19 and once again our point of discussion is to demonstrate
from the scriptures that Galatians 3 19 and also verse 24 etc. are not discussing the end of the
Law of Moses but that the Law of Moses continued as a viable covenant until it was removed in 70
and we'll demonstrate a few scriptures for that but also as we pointed out in our Roman 7 video
which we do encourage you to watch that the manner in which the Jews died to the Law during that time
was through dying with Christ in baptism and therefore freeing themselves from the obligation
of the Law in terms of it being a covenant that would place them in a condition of committing
spiritual adultery or trying to keep two laws at one time and both of them
be laws that hold them accountable before God and so we want to make that very clear
so if you need any discussion on that please watch that video so let's go ahead and get started
in Galatians 3 and verse 19 the Bible says what purpose then does the law serve it was added
because of transgressions till the seed should come to whom the promise was made and it was
appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator now we have the word till and it is
generally understood by some that this means that the law was in force until Christ came but by that
they don't mean the birth of Christ because if they were taking it from the perspective
of the birth of Christ it would suggest that the law ended when Jesus was born when he came
into the world well that would mean that as the Bible says in Galatians 4 and verse 4
Christ would win the fullness of the time was come God sent forth his son made of a woman made
under the law to redeem those who were under the law that we might receive the adoption of sons
then it would have the law ending at the time Christ came into the world so they can't use
the word come to mean come into the world but the text says the law was added because of
transgressions till the seed should come therefore they must admit that we have to use a different
definition for the word come there rather than Jesus just simply coming into the world because
he lived under the law and he also died under the law in addition to that we find that they say that
this happens to be or this is the cross that to come meant the cross well the cross was not really
a coming of Jesus it was a going of Jesus but let's talk about it from this perspective from
that perspective if we say that till the seed should come means at the death of Jesus Christ
then we have a contradiction between something that Jesus taught during the time that he was
on earth because in Matthew chapter 5 verses 17 and 18 he said think not that I am come to destroy
the law or the prophets I did not come to destroy but to fulfill for verily I say to you till heaven
and earth pass one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law till all is fulfilled
and so it was impossible therefore for the law to pass until all were fulfilled and the time that
Jesus gave for the fulfillment of the law is Luke 21 20 through 22 which was the time that Rome
destroyed Jerusalem and that is when he said all things written would be fulfilled he says
when you see Jerusalem compassed with armies then know that its desolation is heat is near
let not those who are in the country enter her let those who are in her midst depart and for
these are the days of vengeance that all things which are written may be fulfilled so we have the
scriptures telling us that it's at the time that Jerusalem is destroyed that all things written
would be fulfilled not at the time that Jesus died in addition we cannot take that beyond the
first century because in verse uh 32 of the same chapter he said that assuredly I say to you this
generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place so what we have therefore
is the Lord saying that the fulfillment of all things would take place at the destruction of
Jerusalem now I'm not going to cover it in this video but another section of scripture that is
critically important to understand would be the 70 weeks of Daniel because the 70 weeks of Daniel
place the end of the old law the sealing up of vision and prophecy the it to making a end of
sins determining the time of Daniel's people and the destruction of the holy city at the end of
the war but we'll cover that in another video but the point being is it's the same time that Jesus
points out in Luke chapter 21 and verse 20 it relates to the destruction of Jerusalem so then
when we look at the word come in if he excuse me in Galatians chapter 2 and the verse is 19
till the seed should come what exactly does that mean well one it could have a meaning of not just
simply Jesus coming into the world which even if we talked about coming to begin his ministry
it would not mean that that's when the law ceased because when John baptized him and manifested him
to Israel that was not the end of the law in addition again when we talk about the death of
Christ that's not a coming of Christ that was a going of Christ in terms of dying and so we would
have to try to make some adjustments to what the word come means but also I want to suggest to you
that the word come in this text isn't what we call an aorist subjunctive now that's for our
Greek students out there and no I am not trying to demonstrate that I know very much about Greek
that's why I have this huge book in front of me which is a Greek grammar of the New Testament in
the light of historical research by John A.T. by A.T. Robertson and this book is a it's pretty
much a standard and classic in terms of understanding the Greek but one of the things that
that he makes points that he makes about the aorist is that the aorist can cover an entire
period of time but be viewed as a single point of time in other words it's called a constative
aorist and what that simply means is for example I'll give you an illustration directly from the
he says the constative aorist treats the act as a single whole entirely irrespective of the parts
or time involved in other words all that means is when the aorist states an action it states it as
though it happened in the past that it's past or that that's the end of that action but the aorist
may encompass a period that is longer or in much more time involved than a point and so it is a
very difficult Greek tense to translate and it is one of the ones that they say is one of the most
difficult to translate but I'm saying this because for those who say till the seed should come they
want to limit it merely to the death of Christ but that's not a coming and even if you talked
about the coming of Christ into the world even at the time of his ministry it still would not be the
end of the law my point is that the word come there can encompass the entire period of Jesus's
ministry his death all the way to his parousia and even with that being stated I want to suggest
to you that there are other indicators in the text which demonstrate that the word come does
not mean the end of the law of Moses from the context I want to read just a few more statements
out of Robertson's book he says that the aorist describes an event as a single whole without the
time taken in its accomplishment again the aorist describes an event as a single whole without the
time taken in its accomplishment in other words it doesn't tell you what the time is that has to
be determined from the context also he says all aorists are punctiliar in statement they're stated
as point single action as one point action but the idea of the of the aorist could be that it's
an action that takes a long time now let me give you an illustration of that also and these are
references on page 832 and page 833 now he says for example in john chapter 2 and verse 20 the
where it where the bible says 40 and 6 years was this temple in building now that's the aorist
here's what he says about it the whole period of 46 years is treated as a point as though it's
one point action 40 and 6 years was this temple in building so my point is is not to use that to
prove our point from galatians 3 but simply to demonstrate that just because it says till the
seed should come and the word come here is an aorist it doesn't mean that that was the end
in one point it could encompass an entire period the aorist in john 2 and verse 20
encompassed the entire duration of 46 years but it was stated in the aorist which is stated as a
point and that's what that's what he says the whole period of 46 years is treated as a point
and there's much more that can be said on the aorist but i want to i want to move on from that
let me read this last comment i think is good he says but verbs that are naturally durative
may have the aorist in other words verbs that continue beyond the point in other words they
could extend out beyond the point but they are considered they are written as aorist but they
are durative in nature and so if the bible says here it was added because of transgressions till
the seed should come there is nothing in the text that mitigates against the word come there
encompassing both jesus's death on the cross all the way through to his parisia and i believe that
is precisely what the text means especially when we talk about the meaning of the seed the meaning
of christ being the son of god and the inheritance which is exactly and precisely the context of
galatians 3 now just a couple of other comments from uh dana and manty on the aorist tense he
says the fundamental significance of the aorist is to denote action simply as occurring without
reference to its progress it is the indefinite tense it has no essential temporal significance
its time relations being found only in the indicative where it is used as past and hence
augmented its true function is best seen in the potential moods and should be carefully considered
in interpretation the aorist signifies nothing as to completeness now that's the point that we're
making the aorist signifies nothing as to completeness but simply presents the action
as attained it states the fact of the action or event without regard to its duration so we want
to make that clear to suggest that it is most certainly plausible and when you look at the
corroborative evidence on uh this text as well as some of the other texts and the overall teaching
of jesus on the law then it would show that the coming of christ in this text could be all the way
to his parrhesia which we've already mentioned was fulfilled in that first century generation
now let's go on let me just read a couple of other passages so we understand the context that we are
talking about he says now a mediator does not mediate for one only but god is one is the law
then against the promises of god certainly not and i think that's a key point the law was not
against the promises of god for if there could have been a law given which could have given life
truly righteousness would have been by the law but the scripture has confined all under sin
that the premise by faith in jesus christ might be given to those who believe now notice the
speaking primarily of the jews uh and and of gentiles as well in terms of confining all under
sin but he says that the premise by faith in jesus christ might be given to those who believe
but before faith came now here is uh another text but before faith came we were kept under guard
by the law kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed now in this case we have
the aorist indicative but before faith came we were kept under guard by the law kept for the
faith which would afterward be revealed all right so it's stated by some that the coming of faith
would be the time of pentecost in other words they will say at the death of christ on the one hand
that it ended at the cross but now we say that we're talking about the coming of faith well
when was that i think everyone would say well that was the time of pentecost now that
could be uh style as a coming of christ because it was the coming through the spirit it was more
properly the coming of the spirit because jesus went away and he said i go away and if i do not
go away the spirit will not come to you so the absence of christ is the time of the presence
of the holy spirit and the presence of christ was the time of the absence of the holy spirit
in terms of the prophecy of joel and that's what stated in the scripture so from that point of
view we have the aorist again but before faith came and as i've demonstrated that could mean
the entire period for the revealing of the faith and for the fulfillment of the scriptures and the
coming of christ because and i say this because uh the fulfillment of prophecy becomes the fact
of prophecy and therefore becomes what is revealed after it has been fulfilled all right so in other
words what the bible teaches from the fulfillment of prophecy is a fact and so not until all prophecy
is fulfilled could we teach the fact of jesus's coming and therefore it's revealed in the
fulfillment i hope that i made that that clear to you and you can ask me some questions about it
and i'll try to do a little better job if that wasn't clear so i'm simply pointing out as we
did on the aorist earlier in verse 19 that it could encompass the entire period now so here's
the point that we want to make therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to christ and to bring
us to christ is for a purpose and that purpose is that we might be justified by faith in other words
we come to christ or and particularly they did in the first century by being justified by christ
not simply coming to know that christ has come or or coming to a point where the gospel is has
been preached but that they might be justified by christ and that's what he's saying the law was our
tutor to bring us to christ the role of a tutor or pedagogist was to take care of the child put
the child into their care until that child matured to the degree that they could then
handle their adult responsibilities now paul gets into what it means to be an adult
because that has to do with the time of the inheritance we won't cover that in this video
we'll have to talk about it in another one because it's really a critical and very
very profound point that needs to be expressed but the point is here he says they were under a tutor
that they would no longer be under the tutor in order that they might be justified by christ so
the law was this tutor to bring them to the point of justification justification from what
justification from sin well was justification from sin completed at pentecost the answer to that is
absolutely no jesus did die on the cross it was the means through which justification takes place
but it wasn't the means at which it was consummated why do we say that because for example
in romans chapter 11 and the verse is 27 the bible says for the deliverer shall come out of
and shall turn away ungodliness from jacob for this is my covenant to them when i will take
away their sins so we see that sin was yet being taken away meaning that it was a process that it
was yet being taken away and would not be completely taken away until the parousia of christ
and therefore you can't be completely justified consummated in justification until sin is removed
and that's what hebrews 9 26 and 27 was all about jesus appeared in the end of the age to put away
sin by the sacrifice of himself and the bible says at the end of the excuse me it says that
he would appear a second time apart from sin in order to salvation so therefore we have this
beginning and this consummation in the putting away of sin and it is not all done at the cross
so notice also when he makes this statement in verse 25 he says but after faith has come
you are we meaning those jews we are no longer under a tutor now what does that mean it didn't
mean that because jesus died they were free from the law it didn't mean that because jesus came
in birth in his ministry or even at the cross that they were freed from the law it didn't even
mean that because the gospel was preached on the day of pentecost they were free from the law
here's what it means paul uses the word for to tell us what it means to be released from the
tutor to be released from the law he explains it in verse 26 but after faith has come we are no
longer under a tutor verse 25 then verse 26 for you are all sons of god through faith in christ
jesus for as many of you as were baptized into christ have put on or clothed yourselves with
christ now notice after that has occurred then watch what he says there is neither jew nor greek
there's neither jew nor gentile when when they have become sons of god by faith in christ jesus
how do they become sons of god by faith in christ jesus for as many of you notice he didn't say
every jew he didn't say all people were released from the law he said for as many of you as have
been baptized into christ have put on christ i remember one preacher put this in the negative
and he stated it this way for as many of you as were not baptized into christ have not put on
christ that means they weren't released from the tutor it was only those who were baptized into
christ that is precisely what romans 7 teaches that's what colossians teaches and that's what
ephesians chapter 2 teaches so the means by which they were released from the law was through dying
with christ in baptism that's what the bible teaches and by the way the gentiles didn't enter
the faith until some 10 years after the gospel was preached and therefore they were not in christ
apart from dying with him in baptism well how then could the jews become in christ it was through
dying with him in baptism and that's where he says there is neither uh june or greek there is neither
male nor female there's neither bond or free for you're all one see that's the reconciliation
that's where jew and gentile are reconciled together as one in christ that's the teaching
of ephesians 2 which starts in verse 13 but now in christ jesus you who once were far off have been
made near or brought near by the blood of christ that's where reconciliation takes place it takes
place in christ and the only way to be in christ is to die with him in baptism romans 6 3 and 4
and therefore be united with christ and for the jews to be united with the gentiles the gentiles
had to be baptized into christ as well and that's where reconciliation takes place that's where
oneness takes place that did not happen outside of christ it did not happen when jesus died on
the cross it did not even happen at pentecost because the gentiles didn't enter for some 10
years later they could not therefore have been reconciled with jews and if they were outside
of christ and the jews were outside of christ neither of them were reconciled to god reconciliation
takes place in christ and so as we conclude this study and if you are christ then you are you
abraham seed and heirs according to the promise see that's the real essence of being a son of god
but we have to talk about that in another video it's all about the inheritance and that's why
the inheritance doesn't come until christ peresea until his return until his second coming as is
commonly known by others that would be the end of that so uh with that i hope that it's clear
that galatians chapter 3 verse 19 nor verse 22 nor verse 24 teaches that the law ended at the
cross what it teaches is that the law brought them to christ that they might be justified by faith
and justification takes place in christ that's also where they clothe themselves with christ
and become reconciled or one in christ it is not outside of him and the only way that occurs was
by dying with him through faith in baptism according to the scriptures i hope that this
