About my garden I live on the edge of USDA zone 6b/7a We have hot and humid summers and cold winters with occassional snow and ice storms. Everything that appears tropical and is in a container goes indoors or to a greenhouse for the winter. The plants in the ground stay in the ground all year. The massive palms are faux planted in their containers to keep from blowing over, they all go to a greenhouse during the winter.

Jeff documents a comprehensive garden overhaul, focusing on preparing for the delivery of large palm trees, installing drip irrigation, and managing seasonal plant care. Despite challenges with unpredictable weather, drainage issues, and pests, he successfully integrates new flora and organizes his outdoor space for family visits.
Oh, the mess.
Not really a mess.
I have my organization stuff.
Things are over here that are supposed to be here
and things are weird over here
because I had to make a path to get over there.
Everything's gonna change.
I have a big delivery coming in a few days,
which I will try and include at the very end of the video.
It's just gonna be the delivery though.
And then next week we'll pick up
with those plants being delivered,
doing stuff with those plants.
Hey, what's up, Garden French?
Jeff here.
How's everybody doing?
I hope you're doing well.
I'm great.
Flustered, as always, but enjoying life
because this is just, this is the time of year I live for.
Things are extra messy out here right now.
Have a broken hose down there.
This hose, it broke.
It broke.
Had to cut the tip off
and I can't find a piece that sits inside of it.
I used the standard repair kit.
That didn't work.
So I got some one inch fittings here, which do work.
These will fit in there,
but the thread's too big for a standard hose.
Things have to do all kinds of reducing and all that stuff.
You know, it's just, it's always something.
So the green hose is out here
because I had to drag this around from the front yard to,
yeah, neither here nor there.
I'm going to be clearing things out.
So at some point in this video, towards the end,
basically everything over here is going to be gone.
It has to be moved.
I have to pull everything out.
I want to put down my drip line.
I have a half inch long drip line
that I want to run behind everything that's over here.
These big trees, they're going to go elsewhere.
And then next week's video,
you'll see new trees going into place.
That might be at the end of this video
because those are really big ones.
I may have them place those trees,
but anything that's smaller for me to move around on my own,
that'll wait until next week.
So right now what I'm doing is,
we're just saying hi.
It's a weird way to start the video.
I have people coming over in a bit.
We're doing birthday stuff, multiple family members.
So I want to get things just a little bit more tidied
over here.
My nephew's going to be here and he's still at that age
where he's always just like walk around
like a drunken gorilla.
Not a ton of coordination.
So getting things up and off the ground would be nice.
Hey, I don't hate that, that looks okay.
That's not where it's going to stay though.
I've already pulled a lot of the perennials
and the winter plants out.
Really the only thing that's left out here
that I consider my winter plants are going to be,
you know, there's an azalea here
that it looks like needs a good prune.
The bamboo's not really, but kind of is.
And then these two big crab apples
and then all the little pansy planters.
Those are going to go elsewhere eventually.
Probably not right now.
I like them right now, but they will fry in these locations
when it gets really warm outside.
They could use a good pruning too.
Things are going to need a big cutback.
It's been such an unseasonably warm start to the year
with the exception of like, you know,
about three weeks late April into May, maybe a month.
Otherwise, late February into that last part of April
was just so nice that I have plants
that are going to need their mid-season cutback
like two months early.
I have a few petunia baskets that are looking,
looking not so great because they need to be sheared back.
So that's something I'll try and remember to do
at some point.
Okay, I just need to, my brain is scrambled.
Where are we going?
Just need to, just pick things up and move them.
I want this pansy to go over here
where it'll be in line with the spring quarter.
Just setting it there for right now.
This guy got a little bit cooked.
See, see, it took some sun, some scorch, but it will be okay.
It'll be just fine since this would benefit
from being potted up into something larger.
Those are wave petunias that I got to plant
into my hydrangea planters down the other end.
And I left off last week's video saying,
I'll get around to it and I'll show you when I do it.
I did it.
You want to see them?
Look it, look it.
Oh, I managed to squeeze a lot into these containers.
It's so much color.
So I have the gorilla cart over here, all the materials.
And this one, I did two pink hanging baskets
of the wave petunias.
And then two of the purple.
Yeah, so there's four hanging baskets in here.
And then I took divisions from a Heliconia, popped those in.
I have a variegated Asclepias in here,
which I really like the way that looks with these colors.
I think that looks good.
And there's a Coleus in here that I don't,
I don't think there's really room for the Coleus,
seeing as how I can't even find it.
I can find it.
It's right here.
I've had these over about three days.
I keep having to come out and fluff things
back a little bit.
This Coleus can just put on another
three inches of height and it'll be okay.
And it can come up and it can escape
that madness down below.
Gosh, I love how these came out.
So frickin' colorful and full.
Instantly full.
This one over here is a smidge different.
So this is the one I did first.
You can see one of the hanging baskets is a little bit,
wasn't, I wouldn't say puny,
but it's just not as big and tall as the other ones are.
I, with this one, decided that I was going to
put the purple in.
Originally these were gonna be all pink,
but I had the purple hanging basket.
So I took the one of the purple hanging baskets
and I divided it up into thirds
and I was not liking the way that they were dividing out.
So the plan was, okay, I do a pink hanging basket
and division from a purple,
pink hanging basket, division from a purple,
pink hanging basket, division from a purple.
The divisions weren't looking great.
However, it's been a few days and they're doing all right.
So I think that they will be okay.
So that's one reason these look different
because they have like full on purple hanging baskets
instead of more divisions.
And I put some gingers in here.
See these gingers?
Aren't they beautiful?
They're so pretty.
There's no way I could get away with that in that container.
Way too much sun.
Wait, they would just cook.
They would scorch.
Wouldn't work out.
Otherwise these are the same.
The Heliconia that was in this one,
it's not transplanting as well.
Remember it was a division and sometimes, you know,
sometimes they don't do the best.
So we'll see what happens with that.
I have more.
And then the Alabama Sunset Coleus,
which is one of my all-time favorite coleus.
You'll see why when it gets bigger,
it gets some more sun.
The color on it's just, oh, it's beautiful.
Yeah, gosh, I love how they came out.
I think they look so, so, so good.
And they smell nice too.
The purple petunias.
Ooh, ooh, smells so fricking good.
Hey, look who opened up.
Aren't these gorgeous?
Look at how heavily petaled those are.
They are the Coral Remembrance Rose, I think.
Something like that.
Oh, they're from Proven Winners and it's a good one.
That's a really good one.
I really like that rose.
Yeah, look at how much has been moved over here.
It's just looking nice.
You can walk right through here.
Not that that's something I was ever thinking
that would need to be done,
but it's nice to have the option.
Though I think it looks odd.
I'll probably fill that in.
Just want something with some height right here.
I have an Adonitia palm that will probably go right here
that'll have some height to it.
Be a Robolinia palm over there.
And then I think two Queen palms.
We will see what they bring.
So it'd be Adonitia, Robolini, two Queens.
I don't need to worry about that.
It's gonna be blank by the time they get here.
Right now, I'm just trying to make this look
a little bit nicer.
These things are just chaotic and I don't like
all the gaps and everything.
I feel like I could take all this and just move it that way.
Okay, and hey, that's exactly what we'll do here.
Doesn't that look better?
Yep, right?
None of that mattered.
So it's been about five days, I think,
since everything you just saw.
A lot has happened.
Good things.
Lots of family time.
Lots of outdoor things.
Trying to mend hoses and failing.
Got a new hose reel.
That's not for this video.
Some other time.
And then multiple days of nonstop rain,
which was just delightful.
Delightful in the sense of like, oh, this is cozy.
This is nice.
We can just lounge around in the house and do nothing
without feeling like, oh, I need to be outside working.
That can be a good feeling.
And well, that's pretty much where that ends.
Because all I keep thinking about is,
oh, the palm trees are going to be here
and I have to move all these plants.
I have to dig a massive hole.
The forecast changed, you know?
So I'm glad that I did a little bit a few days ago.
You know, it's stuff I don't have to do now.
But I'm thinking since the forecast is still calling
for basically nothing but rain for the next 10 days,
which it wasn't doing that before.
This wasn't poor planning, okay?
Last week when I started this video,
it looked like it might rain for a couple of days
and then I'd have, you know, all of the time I needed
to get these things done.
And now that's just, that's not the case at all.
Yeah, drastic swing with the weather.
That's good though.
Rain is good.
I'm happy about the rain.
As long as we don't get too much flooding.
Move everything?
Should I just move everything?
The plants are supposed to get here Thursday.
I would be shocked if they actually show up on Thursday.
That would be very surprising with this weather.
I would imagine that they have been, you know,
they're backtracks now.
They're backed up.
They've got other projects they need to do
because of the rain.
But I need to plan as if they will be here Thursday.
The problem is that if they're not here Thursday,
chances are they won't be here until next week.
I don't think they would come on Friday.
Just knowing them, I would be surprised.
So do I want to be taking everything out,
like pulling it all the way out
and then have them not come for another week
and I can't put it back?
We're not putting these things back.
We're moving everything.
What is wrong with that?
That was awful.
A whole bunch of nothing.
I am so sorry.
My goodness, y'all.
I am so sorry.
Just being a little too open here.
Took an allergy pill.
Yeah, had to be done.
I couldn't breathe.
No, I could.
That's being very dramatic.
But they make me extra dumb.
I'm gonna say that they make me dumb.
Already a little dumb.
They make me extra dumb.
I'm not dumb.
Self-deprecation just makes me feel a little bit better.
I don't actually believe that.
I did some other things.
I got the mulch pile pulled back,
which was long overdue.
Had to get that done.
I would love to have this plant up with impatience
like I do every single year,
but I just don't see a reason to
when I have to dig this massive hole
and I feel like I'm gonna be getting stuff all over the place
and there's gonna be people
like just tramping around all over the place in there.
Tramping around?
Is that the expression?
Tramping?
I don't think so.
Oh, and the hole that the Alexander palm in
is full of water.
So we're gonna have to figure that out.
Look at these roses.
Let's take a moment.
The wind and the storms really has them weighted down.
Look at how beautiful that is.
It is so heavily petaled.
Coral Remembrance, I think that's the name on this one.
Really, really pretty.
I might have to stake this one up.
That's really, really hanging down there.
Gosh, that's so nice.
It smells good too.
It's a good smelling rose.
Nice one for sniffing.
I need to dig these kianas out.
I'll get around to that another time.
Must prioritize.
Can I just get up and walk over there
just so I can move a bucket?
Here I was thinking,
well, this video's not gonna be very long
because I just need to pull all these plants out
and lay out a drip line and dig a hole.
And those aren't things that are all that fun to...
Yeah, why would I film that, huh?
I keep stumbling on my words there.
The more I talk, the better it'll get, okay?
It's not like other videos where when I talk too much,
I can't talk anymore.
I just gotta get warmed up.
Sorry.
Yeah, I'll just pull it all out and put it back.
And then, yeah, this stuff has grown in nicely.
Just got plants up last week and things are settling.
And some of the chlorophytum's taking, some of it's not,
which that's not surprising at all
because I planted them and we had heat.
But now the rain's coming
and I think that's going to help an awful lot.
Am I procrastinating?
I'm not procrastinating.
I'm getting my mouth warmed up, my cords.
We're talking, getting things going.
Other news before I start just scooting plants around.
So the doves that were in here, they had their baby.
The egg hatched, it fledged.
And I was like, okay, cool.
So that means I can move this palm tree,
get it out of here because I have an edinidia palm
I like to put here during the summertime.
Well, apparently the morning doves just do it
over and over and over again.
They're back and there's another egg in there.
Didn't know that that's how they do things, you know?
Other birds, they have their nests and,
oh, I just ruined my nephew's truck.
Well, I didn't.
I'm not the one who didn't put the wood back on there.
Is that what morning doves do though?
Do they not just do it once
and then they're done for the season?
They're just gonna keep popping out an egg every three weeks?
That's not gonna work for me.
Gonna have to figure something else out with them
because that's, I don't want, I don't want them right there.
So in the long run, I actually, I do like this.
I think that this looks nice.
You walk out the door and you've got this little gentle
swoop with the heliconias and hibiscus,
but I think most of this is gonna grow.
The rose, that was an experiment.
I dug these up from the front yard last year
and I was like, oh, I'll hold on to them,
but I'm not attached to them.
I dug them up because I don't like them.
They're, I think they're called
like flamingo or flamenco landscape rose.
They're really sturdy, tough landscape rose.
I think they're great in the landscape.
You should try them if you like that flower
that I just showed you.
But as far as potted roses go, nah.
I just feel like I can do so much better.
So I'm probably gonna be giving those away.
Poor baby, doing a lot of this too.
Storms just blew everything over.
Dianthus, yeah, this is how Dianthus usually looks
this time of year.
Not looking too hot.
I think that I can give this a cutback
or you budded up, you're budded up down inside there, huh?
That's something I like about Dianthus
is that some of them, ones that are really good rebloomers,
they don't do a great job at burying their old flowers.
So you just, you have to go through and sow tediously
and pull all the old ones.
They tend to be really sticky
and you have all new buds coming out from way down below.
Well, you have old ones and new ones up top.
So it's just, you just kind of got to live
with the nastiness of it or be very tedious.
Look at that.
I just pulled off two buds
when I was trying to pop those old ones off.
Man, they don't do great here during the summer anyways.
It gets real hot, at least in my yard.
I think if I had a drier bed somewhere,
they'd probably do fine, but I don't.
I've been moving some things over here.
There's more shade in the afternoon,
starting to make things easier to take care of over there.
It's a whole bunch of shade in the morning.
And then that afternoon sun,
which was fine when it was cooler outside,
but well, it's not cooler anymore.
Although today I'm wearing a hoodie.
We're moving into the hard part of the year.
That's what I meant.
This is a good time to move things.
Oh, what's he barking at?
Somebody's spraying some kind of chemical
all over the place up there.
I was wondering, I could smell it.
Turbo, ah, Turbo, come here.
Turbo, get out of there.
I don't know what that is.
Go sniffing that stuff.
Mm-hmm, yeah, we don't need to be sniffing
whatever the heck that is.
I can smell it down here.
Whatever it is, it's strong.
Oh my God, that smells awful.
What is that?
Ugh, I don't even want to breathe over here right now.
Okay, I'm going to pull the rest of these plants out.
No reason to keep talking about how everything smells bad.
When we come back, maybe there'll be nothing over here,
but there'll still be some things.
There's a fair way to put these crab apples, too.
I have an idea, but you know, it's one of those things
where it's like, eh, you have an idea,
but you don't really know until you try, right?
Yep, yep, I know, that doesn't go over here.
This is really gross.
Guys, I made a mess, I don't really make a mess.
Nature did the thing.
I've had rugs sitting over here for a couple of years.
I figured, well, if I'm pulling everything out,
I need to pull the rugs, right?
Oh, look at that, that's really gross.
There's dirt, there's a lot of dirt.
Looks like there's a few stickers
from things that have fallen in there.
Yeah, it's actually, it's not that bad.
And I do think, I'm pretty sure the last couple years
I've had this seating area over here,
I have pulled the rug up and cleaned underneath
it every spring, so this is just, well, I don't know.
Maybe I didn't do it last spring, I don't know.
Everything has been moved out.
Anything that I thought I would be using,
like, you know, with the tropicals,
I tried to keep more on the outside.
Anything that is a perennial or was a spring plant,
it's either on the hot tub wall or on the ground over there
where they'll either end up being pulled
to get planted into the yard,
or they'll go away somewhere else
to go, you know, live on a farm somewhere.
No, I'm sure, like, I'll have friends
or somebody who'll want to take these things.
Trying to get the big stuff up with a brush, a broom.
Probably gonna end up having to power wash this.
It doesn't need to be spotless,
just, you know, it needs to be better than this.
Squirrels did all kinds of fun stuff this year.
Every spring, I end up coming through here
and there's all kinds of electrical cords
underneath and around everything
from all the lights that are out here and then the fountains.
And when I pull the furniture and everything,
I'm able to see, oh, what do they chew through?
Trick question, everything.
They chew through everything.
Not really, it's probably like three different things.
I figured out why these lights
on the steps haven't been working.
Yep, squirrels.
I assume squirrels, chipmunks, more than likely.
We have lots of little baby chipmunks out here.
And they do their thing, they're cute.
And I like having them around just because they're cute,
but, whew, really had to get good at splicing cords
over the years because of them.
Oh, look at that, that's real gross.
Really nasty.
I'm gonna hold off on the power washing over here.
I'm guessing until either later today or tomorrow.
It would make sense for me to do that
at the same time I'm working on the hole
because I'm gonna get really dirty
when I work on that hole.
I'm digging out that hole.
I feel like I just had a Tobias moment.
Do you guys watch Rusted Development?
Tobias, he would say things and mean them one way,
and it was just so clearly obvious
that there was something else going on with that guy.
That's not what wasn't my intention.
I have to dig a giant hole for the queen palm.
It's gonna go all the way over there.
Good, I just dropped some.
Where'd it go?
I heard a crunch, that's why I made that sound.
It was just a banana.
Look at this.
That's not supposed to be butted out yet.
El Nino Chitalpa.
What's your deal, dude?
Did this last year.
I thought, oh, that's just a float
because I had just planted it last year,
but no, here we are.
Early to mid-May, it's got buds on it.
Probably started budding out in early May.
We'll say mid-May.
I thought they weren't supposed to bloom until mid-summer,
but that has not been my experience,
really, mid to late summer.
I don't know.
Oh, this is gross.
Very satisfying, though.
Also, sometimes one of the reasons I like to use the broom
to go over and do this stuff before I power wash
is because it drags those bristles across everything.
It does help to loosen everything up.
So I don't have to go quite as hard
with the pressure on the pressure washer.
Also going to have to clear a path over here,
so I have some way to wash and slush all this stuff out.
This stuff, I think I should probably scoop up
and put into a pile somewhere, right?
I don't think I should just wash this right into the yard.
Get that over there.
There we go.
Now, the one spot I had to walk through,
it's filled with that.
Furniture and things are just hanging out over here.
Just a reminder, I don't know if I said this
in the beginning of the video,
but hopefully the palm trees will be delivered
in this video, then we'll maybe get them placed.
And that's it.
I'm not gonna be trying to make things
look really, really pretty.
I'm just trying to clear the spot, dig the hole,
clean it up, and next week, my goal,
depending on the weather,
it's supposed to rain every single day.
Like I said, for the next 10 days,
I think I said that earlier.
And I would like to get everything
that was meant to go around
any of the palm trees, the tropicals, handled.
And then next week, anything that needs to go
in the ground and gets planted or into containers,
and those things, get that handled.
Because I've been waiting for eternity
for an order of potting soil to come in,
so I haven't dumped some of my containers out
like these guys.
I would like to do these, these two gasea palms,
but I don't have dirt.
Soil, yeah, okay.
I'm gonna brush and scrub on this, help loosen it up.
That's one nice thing, we have all this rain,
so that will help, probably.
Some, there is a product, I can't remember the name of it,
I used it on the patio years ago.
Worked really, really well, was it Soilex, maybe?
I don't remember.
That's what I'm going to do.
We'll probably pick up with a hole digging.
We'll go dig a hole.
That's gonna be really boring.
I highly doubt I'm gonna film myself digging a hole
that's gonna be 40 inches across
and maybe two and a half to three feet deep.
I don't see that happening.
I don't know, maybe, who knows?
Those good breakfast cookies, pumpkin?
Yep, yep, I like how you get all over the side of the bowl.
Next morning, I'm over it.
I don't want to go back out there.
Yeah, I do, actually, I really enjoy it outside.
Nice overcast day, this would be a good time
for a garden tour, but not, no,
it would be a horrible time for a garden tour.
Everything's in total, what am I talking about?
Total disarray, this would be a bad time for a garden tour,
but, you know, lighting-wise, it's good.
Some pretty explosive growth over here on the butterburs,
the pingpukulas, look at that.
They just took off.
Especially this one, this one is very vigorous,
super vigorous grower.
I was thinking it wasn't getting enough water,
but this little cup right here had water in it
when I went to check on it, so it's okay.
Is that exciting, getting to see the garage door go up?
Probably not, gonna need this guy,
was using him a bunch yesterday.
I already started on the hole.
It looks like I need to water in here, too.
Guys, come on, get it together, you know I'm busy.
Looking forward to being able to bring
the rest of these plants out.
They're not that thirsty, I'll give them a drink
here in a little while.
Another week, I'll bring the rest of these guys out,
probably, hopefully, it all just depends.
I want to use everything that's left in there,
with the exception of the monstera,
and there's a mule palm, those could come out.
But all the smaller plants, I want to use this
to put in around the bigger plants.
I want to have the bigger plants placed
and planted up before I start doing things
with the rest of those plants that are over there.
Okay, I'm gonna wait for Pumpkin to finish her breakfast,
then we can go outside and I can show you
what I've been doing over with that hole.
She's a very picky eater, and she has days
where she just doesn't want to eat food.
So if she's actually eating, I hang out with her,
because sometimes when I leave, she stops eating
and just goes and does something else.
So I'm gonna hang out with you while you eat your food,
okay, Pumpkin?
Yeah, is that good?
It smells horrible, I'm glad you like it.
And I have to be here to scoop, so when the food gets,
she licks it up to the top of the bowl,
I take the spoon and I scrape it back down
towards the front, because when it gets too high,
she stops licking it, so, yeah.
She keeps me busy.
That's a satisfying crunch, I doubt you could hear it.
Another picky eater, do you see what he did?
I know this needs to be put away,
but it's a nice having one of these,
I don't know, what are we, a fatigue mat on each side?
That's what this is.
Look at what happened to the gingerbread men.
Look at, it's just the ones with the green sweaters.
I think, I think Colby ate their sweaters.
I wouldn't be laughing about if it weren't for,
this happened months ago and I just connected the dots
that that's probably what happened, so clearly he's okay.
But what the heck, Colby?
Wow, pumpkin, impressive.
That is the most food I've seen you eat in a while.
Which is nice, and that means she's probably
going on a hunger strike now for two days,
because her tummy's full.
Yep, complicated kitty.
Never really hunger strikes, she'll still eat treats
and cheese, which I don't give her, but she'll beg for it.
All right, so we'll go down and have a look
at what I got done yesterday.
And you know, it actually, it really wasn't that bad,
because the auger did a lot of the work for me,
and I just went through with the shovel
and you know, we removed the rest.
This hole needs to be 36, this way and that way,
by ideally 30 inches deep, but it's not gonna,
I'm not gonna be able to get it to 30 inches.
I keep encountering problems,
so there's an old pipe right here
that I did some cutting on, you can kind of see it.
See right there, that pipe, it's an old drain pipe.
And I can cut that back the rest of the way,
but when I encountered it, I started digging
further this way, and I started digging further this way,
and I found an electrical line.
So I can't dig any deeper, the electrical line's
like directly straight down, right around here.
So I can't go any further this way,
because I won't be able to go any further down.
Can't go any further that way,
because I have a pipe right here,
that I guess I'm just gonna have to keep cutting away at.
Yeah, it's been tricky.
This took a long time yesterday,
and I'm only at like, I don't know, maybe 18 inches deep.
That's not gonna cut it, it needs to be deeper than that.
Because the container's 30 inches, right?
So we're gonna want, I would want, you know,
like 2 3rds to 3 4ths of that container buried.
It has a 25 foot palm tree in it.
That thing will blow over, and it is extremely heavy.
If it blows over this way, it could break the pottery.
If it blows over that way, it could damage the fence.
I mean, obviously it could hurt a person too,
but usually when it blows over,
it's kind of like a slow thing.
Like you go, oh, that's coming for me,
I should move six feet that way and you'd be fine.
But still, you know, it's safety and damage, right?
So I gotta go as deep as I can here.
It's just, you know, it's been challenging.
Really, before I do any of that, today's Wednesday,
palm trees are supposed to come on Thursday.
Tomorrow, I would be shocked
if the palm trees show up tomorrow.
Absolutely shocked because, you know,
it rained most of the day, Monday and Tuesday.
So whatever clients they need to do Monday and Tuesday,
they've had to push back.
But I have to plan as if they're going to be here,
which means I need to find a sump pump
and, you know, I've got to drain this hole down.
Probably need to dig that out some too,
but it's kind of hard to say when it's full of water.
Nothing?
Let's try in.
It's so fascinating how sometimes
you have to burp your pumps to get them to go.
This is not a pump.
I won't have to do that with soap.
Come on, come on, just work.
You have to hold this up to make it go.
Oh, oh, this is going to be gross.
This water smells awful.
And then we have to dig that out some too.
Look at how, that should be way down in there.
It's not, there's like, I don't know, a foot of water.
What if I just could take the auger?
Maybe I could grab the auger,
put one of the really long,
smaller circumference bits on there
and dig some holes into the sides of this hole
and allow that water to,
I think there's just a lot more water to come in.
It's turned into a well for this whole area.
Yeah, that's doing something, very slowly,
but something's going on.
Okay, that started to work,
but the hose popped off
and it just geysered poop water everywhere.
It's not poop water.
I mean, there's probably a lot of poop in there.
It's a bunch of frogs, big bullfrogs.
The smell, I don't even know how to describe it.
It's like when you, I don't know,
have you ever cleaned out a really old pond
and then mixed it with the way, like,
you know, the zoo smells?
It's just, it's bad, very bad.
And now there's that water geysered
all over the cars and the driveway.
This hose isn't working.
It's all kinked up.
It kinked up inside the hose rail.
And I'm just, I'm over it.
I have this one, the VigoGuard one.
It's not set up.
You're supposed to mount it to a pole,
but for right now, this will have to do.
My biggest curiosity with these things
was how's the water pressure going to be?
This is a high flow one.
So in theory, should be decent,
but I just had bad water pressure or bad flow.
Low float.
Why is nothing happening?
I turned the water on.
Are you kinked up too?
What?
This is like as basic as it gets.
Attach hose and then water comes out.
There we go.
It's not the most amazing flow,
but it's better than I was getting out of that other hose.
That's for sure.
That'll do.
Yeah, I don't know how happy I'm going to be
with this kind of pressure in the long run, right?
I mean, that's not much.
Maybe if I attach it to the other side of the house
where there's better pressure, it might be worth it.
I don't know, because this is pretty bad.
Get it just the right angle.
Pinch it down just enough and get some more grow in there.
And look, there's still water in the hole.
It just pumped out about half of it
and just shot it all over the sky.
It doesn't want to go through the hose.
The hose isn't clogged.
I checked both ends.
Ran some water through it.
It's fine.
I just use it to water plants in the garage
and the grow space, so I don't know.
Okay, I'm going to hose the cars off and the driveway off
and we'll get back to working over here.
I'll try it with this thing.
What's it called?
The nose hosel.
We'll put that on there, see what the pressure's like.
It's not going to be amazing, but hey,
it's better than the nothing that I have going on
over there right now.
So I have somebody coming over
who's going to help me dig that hole
and we're going to try and troubleshoot
the disgustingness of that,
this disgusting bog that's over there.
You know what it smells like?
It smells like a beach, like in California,
the California beaches.
It smells like where there's a ton of seabirds and seals.
Do you know that smell?
That's just, it's horrible.
The Pacific Northwest in general,
or anywhere there's a lot of like,
lots and lots and lots of seabirds and seals.
It stinks.
Okay, I've made that point.
I think y'all get it.
So they're going to come over.
We're going to work on that hole.
We're going to work on getting that cleared out.
Don't even worry about that anymore in the video.
Just going to figure it out and get it done.
Get it done as much as possible.
I'd like to get that hole down a few more inches.
And I don't, if need be,
then I can pile soil up around the edges of the pot
and help hold that in place.
Maybe just have to put stakes in the ground
and brace it down.
We'll figure it out.
Something I need to do that I'm very much going to regret
doing if I don't do it is getting the drip.
I've had a drip line sitting out here
since the middle of last summer,
ready to get put through here.
The problem is I want to,
there's frickin' bugs flying in my mouth right around it.
I need to run the, oh my gosh,
it's like a cloud of mosquitoes around me.
It's because I smell like the ditch water.
That's what it is.
Smell like a nasty hose rolling in mud.
The hose needs to go underneath the steps right here.
I don't think I should move the windmill palm
because the doves are in there and they're sitting on an egg.
I don't know what to do here.
I think it's just going to suck
that what's going to happen here
is I'll go ahead and I'll run my line through right here.
Just put a line right here and a line right here, essentially.
I'm gonna let it come out a few feet and swoop around.
So everything goes over here,
we'll be able to set up on drip easily.
But I wanted that drip to run under the steps
and through that garden bed
and right over to that corner right there
where the water is.
I'll just have to pull everything out later
when the dove's done with its baby.
Pull that out and I'll be putting a different palm tree
over there anyways and just have to do it then.
It's just gonna be much more difficult
because everything's gonna be so much bigger at that point.
It's gonna be really hard to run a line
through underneath there,
but I don't really know what else to do.
I don't want to disturb mama dove and her little baby,
even though I think she's being kind of greedy.
She already had one.
I think that's enough this year.
All right, drip inventory.
I pulled the line through behind everything.
The idea, I'm pretty sure I explained this well enough,
but to take a T and put it right around this middle section
and then to run that line underneath,
take the other side of the house
where I can hook it to a timer.
In years past, I've had this drip hooked up to a timer
that ran from that side of the house,
but then I had all these just hoses and pieces
all over the place over here.
I would like to get this piece of the garden over here
cleaned up this year.
You can see how it's just gross.
It's overgrown.
It's on the patio.
It's junky.
And the past year, it's been working my way
from like here and all the way around since 2021,
2022, somewhere in there.
And this is pretty much kind of the last juncture right here
is what I really need to finish
in order to have things be like,
oh, we're good out here.
There's no more like really big, just disgusting eyesores.
So I don't want to run the water
from that side of the house.
Not if I don't have to.
And there's a reason I can't do it from this side over here.
I have in the past.
So I just figured may as well do that.
Might make sense to tee it through.
However, I might be able to just run this
right through the very front.
Under here, the hose does fit under there.
I just like for it to be open
so it's easier to wash things out
from underneath these steps.
But that would probably be a lot easier
to run it through the front right there
and tuck it back in, weave it through.
It'll look messy if I do it that way.
Technically should probably use an elbow.
There's a sharp angle right here.
So if I'm going to be doing it that way,
that'd be the smart way to do it.
The proper way to do it really.
I'm also realizing that maybe I just needed
to get this in place behind everything.
And perhaps I just finish it up
once the palm trees are actually here.
Because I'm having a bit of a hard time going,
oh, well, I should set this up
and then I'll be ready to go
when the plants aren't actually here yet.
And I don't fully know everything
we're going to have in this spot.
The other thing that's a drip
is that if you're using big broadcast sprayers
like these guys, micro emitters,
and you put a head on these,
they have different size fans they can put out
and do ones that do up to like a 10 foot radius.
Then you can just kind of throw them out willy-nilly
if you're going to be using these things.
But if you're using them directly into the containers,
then, well, the containers need to be set up to an extent.
Right, I mean, I know I'm going to need
probably two drip lines over there for one big plant,
two drip lines right here for one big plant,
two right here for another big plant,
two right here for another big plant.
Adonitia, Roboini, Queen and Queen, maybe.
We'll see.
They have the hose enders, plenty of those.
That's how you end this,
you just take it and you loop it through each end
and it pinches down, easy to do.
I don't know, and this is very important,
I don't know if I have an adapter
to actually hook this up to the faucet.
Those are ones I usually run out of
because it's not ones that I tend to buy a lot of.
Oh, valves, these come in nifty.
Doesn't look like I even have anything
to hook this up to the house with.
So that was the other thing I was going to say
is that I don't know that I want to get too elaborate
with this until I've run a water test on it
because I've had this drip line for years.
It was just sitting up in my attic.
So I should probably hook it up
and run water through it just to check
and make sure that's not going to spray water everywhere.
But I can't do that without a hose adapter,
so I don't know, I'm going to figure that out.
One other thing I'm going to do
is I'm going to have this piece right here,
I'm going to bring it to right here,
I'm going to cut it, put an ender on there
or try and find a hose adapter
or run the hose through at least this piece
because this is the most crucial piece.
Everything from here and over
is really more just to run it to the side of the house.
I'll probably put one drip line on the section over here
to run to the palm tree that goes right here
or whatever plants are right there, but that's it.
So this is the most important part right here
is where I'm going to be using the most drip emitters.
So, all right, that's cool.
Need to find an adapter somewhere.
I probably have one.
I will dig around and see if I can find one.
If not, I'll run by the hardware store.
Because that's kind of the last big thing
that needs to be done before the palm trees get here.
This wouldn't be impossible to do
once the plants are here,
but once the plants are here,
I would like to go ahead and put the rugs back
and put the furniture back and everything, right?
And once all the furniture and everything's back over here,
it's much more difficult to work with these drip lines.
So even if it's not hooked up to the water,
I want to have the drip line in place
with the emitters run to the plants.
You know what I mean?
So that's where I'm at right now.
And I'm just messing with that water bog over there
so more like every 10 minutes,
we're over there and check on it
because the water keeps filling in.
Because the ground's just saturated,
and that's basically a well for that whole area.
Then trying to get the pump to push out more water.
It just, I don't know, it doesn't want to.
I need to maybe run to the hardware store
and just get a bigger hose.
I think that's part of the problem.
I don't want to go to the hardware store.
I smell so bad right now.
I actually think the smell's mostly just stuck in my nose
because I ran inside and I had a very, very,
very quick shower after all that water got on me.
But still, I don't think that the world,
you know, it's a horrible place,
but I don't think it did anything to deserve
having to smell what I smell right now.
Okay, all right, I think this is perfect.
I've been wanting to do dwarf cannas.
As a backdrop, like in the mid-ground of the garden.
Cannas are hardy.
But it's been hard to find a variety for sale
that I like the size of and says 20 by 20.
I don't know if that's true or not.
Just to be safe, I'll just get five.
And then, oh, I'm here for,
I'm here because I'm supposed to be getting stuff
for the drip.
But this is fun too.
I can't not.
How pretty.
This hibiscus is back here.
I'm not usually into this one.
The blue, whatever it's called, blue chiffon.
Is that what it is?
No, this one is Chateau de Versailles.
Okay, well, it looks like the blue chiffon.
That's a really nice color.
Looks more blue in person.
That looks very purple on camera.
Peonies and hydrangeas.
Oh, it looks so good this time of year.
I'm in the wrong, what am I doing?
I'm at Lowe's.
Clarence, always check out the Clarence.
Besides, it's just the same old, same old,
you know, roses, lilies, spike plants.
Oh, the figs, figs are looking nice.
Nice big figs.
Oh, I don't think there's a Clarence price out there
that would make it worth paying for those.
Those look bad.
You have to be way better than half off.
That's too bad.
These baskets are all half off.
Oh, these are nice looking baskets.
All right, the ground has been scraped clean
from my pile over here.
No big deal.
Get rid of that.
Brushed it, scrubbed it,
like really, really, really went over it with the scrubber.
It's good to get the rugs back on there
once the palm trees are here, which should be soon.
Some of them are here.
They sent people out early to dig with a hole.
What?
I was like, oh no,
I already spent hours upon hours digging the hole.
Hey, good on them for remembering
that the palm tree is gonna go someplace
and no one needed a hole.
But the hole's been dug.
There's people over here,
so I'm gonna be weird about this.
We're just gonna walk over.
I'm getting real quiet now.
I'm just gonna, I'm gonna go up here.
See?
There it is.
Big hole.
That was a very dirty, disgusting job.
Actually, that hole wasn't too bad.
The hole at Crossmouth, it was full of water.
Yeah, we talked about it.
That's not bad.
Bad enough that clothes and shoes all had to come off
before going in the house.
After working on that, just stripped down,
hosed it off, and went inside.
Because, yeah, oh, it stinks.
And I popped a few new holes into the sides of that hole,
so hopefully it'll drain better.
I do that every year, and it seems to help.
So, I don't know.
Hopefully it'll work this time.
And then I got some fun plans at Lowe's.
That's right.
That's the last thing I filmed.
I was at Lowe's.
I popped in there for adapters.
Yes, okay.
Guys, I'm just, listen.
The more in the palm trees come,
it's always just a lot going through my head.
So this line right here,
I wanted to make sure it was hooked up to water,
so I can test these for holes.
This had three spots with little pinholes in them,
so I had to cut that out.
This is what I have left for this spot, which is fine.
This'll come out to about right here.
I'll probably wrap in some.
It's long enough that I can take it over
and continue the drip from around there if I want to.
That's fine.
I can just splice into it from the other side.
So that's just been handled.
I did not want to have to,
I know it doesn't seem like that big of a deal,
but it's just much easier to just have this line back there
before all those palm trees are put into place.
So that's just, that's there for now.
And then this'll be able to get done
once the palm trees are here, which we're just waiting.
Here's those petunias, the bioluminescent
that I have yet to see ever, luminesce.
Haven't seen anything come off of them.
I've come out here and like put my hands around them,
looked in there real close at nighttime.
I don't know.
I don't see anything, my eyes just suck.
Maybe that's it.
My eyes are just real bad, I don't know.
I hear the sound of a truck.
Could be a crane or something, I don't know.
Sounds like it's over here moving through.
If so, then that's probably them.
Yep, that's it.
Crane's here.
I'm gonna cut to maybe filming some of the stuff.
Yeah, she's over there watching a video
on how to tie-dye stuff.
And then when we come back, there'll be palm trees.
I'll try and film the process,
if not, I'll insert last year's footage.
It's gonna be the same thing.
Crane drops palm tree, crane drops palm tree.
It's neat stuff, but I feel weird filming them.
♪♪
Well, what do we think?
Again, just the one queen, but we have it ironed out.
He promised me he's gonna bring the other queen.
Fingers crossed.
Looks better this year than it did last.
Remember, it showed up and a bunch of the fronds
broke on it because it fell.
This year it still fell, but it looks pretty good.
I don't really know what to do
because I'd like to put everything back over here,
but if they're gonna be bringing another palm tree,
that means I have to move everything again.
Well, I mean, I'll just have to move it,
so I won't have to clean this time, so that's good.
Okay, I did some growing.
Really big.
Only palm that doesn't look good,
which is no surprise, is the robellini.
It looks horrible.
It usually comes back looking pretty bad.
I don't know if we've talked about it.
They just, the robellinis and the sago palms
don't do well for them in their greenhouse.
They just, they're ameliobug magnets.
This thing is absolutely infested.
So if I didn't already have this palm, I wouldn't get it,
but I have it and I've had it for a long time
and it comes back looking like crap every year
and then I spray it and spray it and spray it
and spray it and spray it.
Then, you know, by July, it usually looks a lot better.
This is probably the worst it's ever looked.
This is the worst infestation it's ever had.
I'm tempted to just, really, I mean,
I kind of just want to get rid of it.
I won't, but it is tempting to say, you know what?
I've had it with you and your constant ameliobug issues,
but I won't do that.
Gonna have to lay it down on its side
and just spray the heck out of it.
Two, double-trunked adenidias.
They go over here in the Miami planters.
I already put one in the container
because I had somebody here to help me
and they're still here actually
so I can only talk for a minute.
I went in and I dropped that one in right over there.
The camera doesn't want to zoom.
Why won't you zoom?
Zoom in, there we go.
Right there.
Okay, now it zoomed in all the way
when I tried to get it to zoom out.
Zoom out, there we go.
This one right here can't go over there
because I need to repot it into a container
that fits into those pots.
So that's a project, fairly easy one.
I have a single adenidia, a single adenidia,
which both look really good, don't they?
This one looks fantastic.
This is the beautiful one that I bought last year.
It's nice and girthy.
This one over here is just the, you know, it's fine.
And then the double-trunked adenidia right here.
That one is supposed to go where the windmill palm is,
but the windmill palm, as you guys know,
we've talked about it.
It's got baby birds in there.
Morning doves nesting, so that, I don't know.
And then what's left?
Big bird of paradise, it's huge.
Always comes back with some broken fronds
that happens on the trucks.
I gotta prune it up, do some cleaning on it.
But I think it looks nice, right?
Just gotta do some cleaning and some spraying.
Just got some bugs on it.
The big queen, which will be much more visible
once these plants aren't over here,
and the big triple alexander palm.
The queen palm looks fricking awesome over here.
So good, I have a frond that needs to be pruned off of.
That was the right move,
putting it over here instead of having it
all the way down there.
It was fun having it down there.
But I talked about it in lots of garden tours last year,
is it just kind of disappeared into the tree line up there,
blended with the pine trees.
But over here, you can really see it,
especially when there aren't plants
piled up in front of it.
Overall, I am very happy with how things are doing.
The robelenium, it's a bummer,
so it's kind of the worst it's ever looked,
but it's come back looking like this before,
and I know it can rebound.
Yeah, there's still one more palm tree on the way
eventually.
Apparently, there'll be one coming someday.
To go over there for now,
I'll put one of these adenidias over there.
There's a double trunk adenidia.
I don't know, there's no shortage of palm trees.
There's plenty of work to be done.
Thanks for hanging out while we got everything prepped,
got that drip line laid out.
Plants are here.
I am going to go ahead and just cut it,
and then we'll move on to next week,
which will be a lot of fun next weekend,
getting things put where they're supposed to go,
doing some repots,
getting things planted up around them,
and you'll be able to get a really nice look
at how everything's doing.
This was exciting though, getting them shipped in here.
That's one of my favorite parts of the year.
Yeah, it's just the unfortunate reality
of sending things away to a greenhouse.
Sometimes they come back covered in bugs.
I went ahead and I pulled most of the foliage
off that Bird of Paradise.
It was just, it was looking bad.
Some of those leaves have been on there for years.
I haven't pruned this thing in years,
so I went ahead and I gave it a big cut back.
I need to top dress it or repot it.
They can stay in a small container
for a long, long, long time,
so I think I'll probably just top dress it
and fertilize it really well.
I think I'm gonna put this back here,
but we can talk about that next week.
Oh, I moved all the palms.
There's a lot of discussion going on
about the wind blowing everything into the pool,
so I thought, yeah, okay.
Let's go ahead and just move them.
So they're down there now,
except for this guy.
I'm not worried about this one blowing in the pool.
It's not, it's, you know, top heavy.
Need to figure out a way to get that pruned down.
I don't have a pole saw, a tree pruner.
Isn't that ridiculous?
I know, you'd think I would have one,
but I don't.
Is my mic on?
Okay.
Had to do an audio reset.
Microphone wasn't doing anything there.
Hopefully everything I was just saying
was coming through okay.
Yeah, need to prune that out,
get that figured out.
You see why I didn't want to spend too much time
deep coining out here?
It's gonna get so messy.
I have to make some decisions
about where to put a few things,
which is a fun thing to do.
I'm excited about it,
but it would be time consuming,
so I'm pretty sure we already said
that's gonna wait till next week, right?
I talked about that and you heard,
I think you heard me, yeah?
I don't know if you heard me,
but I'm pretty sure I talked all about it.
So all that's left,
really, we've seen the palms,
we've seen the plants.
This one looks a little wonky.
Let me straighten that up.
Oh, the plants.
I picked up some plants at Lowe's.
These guys over here.
Aren't they awesome?
They were on sale for $9.99.
Summer Spritz Orange Zest Kiana,
which I know I already talked to you about them,
but it says they only go 20 by 20.
I don't know if that's true.
We will see.
I like the flowers on them.
Look at that.
Isn't it pretty?
They're all varied.
Nice, heavily flowered Kiana.
I want to put these where I had the Heliconias last year
in a drift right through here.
Just a big swoop right in front of the bananas.
I'll pull out those Kianas.
I don't know what they are.
I think that they were supposed to be stoop guards
and they're not.
So they need to go.
And I've wanted to do a dwarf Kiana right here.
And then with the Sun Impatiens right in front of them,
just, you know,
haven't really found any that I liked
and I saw those,
I was like, yeah, that's good.
They also had one that was yellow.
I believe I would have preferred pink.
I want to put the pink Sunburst Kianas in here.
That would be beautiful,
but I don't have trouble coming by them.
And when I find them,
oftentimes I just end up getting sent a Tropic Kiana
that's not actually a pink Sunburst.
So I think these are good.
There's five of them.
The Kianas are perfectly hardy here, usually.
So I would think that if I have a row of those planted
right around here and back,
they should come back just fine.
And everything else is just clearance plants.
These hanging baskets right here are mixed wave Petunias.
These weren't clearance.
So they were like 10 bucks a pop and they look fine.
Use a little bit of feed,
but otherwise they look good.
Not really sure why they weren't clearance.
Yeah, these are good.
This is one of those like drop and grow thingamajiggers.
Yeah.
More wave Petunias, just more color.
Doing my Petunias on clearance this year.
The only Petunias I have bought full price was just a,
what?
I grabbed six Super Petunia Vista Bubblegums.
Oh, and a few jasperies.
I did everything with those clearance baskets
that I've been able to get ahold of,
or the sales baskets.
One of these were, what were they?
Two for 13 on these wave Petunias that are in these pots.
Great deals.
And I grabbed a flat of these.
These weren't clearance.
Don't know why.
Perfectly fine, but they were on sale.
They were like 10 bucks.
There's nothing wrong with these.
I don't know, but these are great.
I use these on all kinds of ranches.
You can just rip chunks out and stick them
in between plants if you need some kind of filler.
And they're, what?
They're totally hardy.
I almost said turtley.
Totally cold hardy.
So they're good.
You can just stick them in the ground.
Most of those sedums that are in there are good to zone for.
So, you know, you can put them in most places.
Yeah.
This is driving me crazy.
I'm going to try and handle that.
And then, well, no, that's it.
That's it.
That's, we've done enough.
I need to get my head on straight.
And this video has come out Saturday.
So I still need to edit this.
And then I need to get to work on getting these
where they're supposed to go.
So I'm going to edit and start filming next week's video
today and tomorrow.
How fun.
That is fun.
I'm looking forward to it.
I want to keep talking about all the things I want to do
but I should just shut up.
Just shut up.
Don't need to say anymore.
I can probably get around to planting a lot of these things.
And I'm really excited about that.
And I have a new, nope, we're done.
This looks better.
That needed to be done.
Got that scraped clean.
And this is going to look totally different next week.
The whole backyard next week is going to look
fairly drastically different.
Not that, I mean, it already looks pretty crazy, right?
Compared to the beginning of the video.
That is, hey, I hope everybody's doing well.
Having a great day, great life.
And everything's just going absolutely beautifully for you.
Comment down below what's going on in your gardens.
Where's our friend?
He's hiding.
Hiding means wants to be left alone.
I'm fine with that.
Yeah.
Is the weather good?
You starting to do some gardening?
I know for a lot of you, you had the really warm spring
and then the, just the crash and the cold.
So hopefully things are warming up
and starting to feel like summer.
It's actually gonna be pretty cool here
for the next several days, which I'm not mad about.
So it's just more pleasant weather
to be getting work done in, right?
All right, yeah, again.
So thanks for hanging out.
See everybody next week and keep on growing.
Bye, bye.
