AI GeneratedThis tutorial by Johanna from Kulibri provides a comprehensive guide to knitting the Teo sweater, a fitted, color-blocked garment. It details the top-down construction process, focusing on shaping the body and sleeves, implementing jogless color changes, and creating a professional rolled edging for a polished finish.
Hello and welcome to a new knitting pattern tutorial from Kulibri by Johanna. I'm Johanna
and today we are going to knit the Teo sweater over here or over there.
I worked up two versions of the design as I was very curious to see how it will look like when I
change the darker and the lighter color of the design. Most test knitters chose as I did to
work the darker color around the neck and the lighter color around the waist and for this
version I chose to change the order and work the lighter color at the top and the darker color
around the waist and I think the result turned out pretty pretty well as well.
Let's take a look at the construction of our Teo sweater. We start working from the top down
by casting on the stitches of the back part and we work the back part back and forth in rows
and stockinette stitch with increases along the armholes to shape the armholes. Of course we have
to work according to the color change as written down in your pattern you will need to work up your
version of the design. Then you can put the stitches on hold on a separate rope or leftover
yarn and start to pick up stitches for the front panels at the shoulder line of our back part and
then we will work the left front part first with increases to shape the round neck. Then we will
work the right front part also with increases to shape the round neck. Then we can join the two
front parts along the neckline and finish the front part similar to the back part with the same
armhole increases and then we can join everything under the armpits to the round and then our
sweater is just finished in stockinette stitch in the round. Very simple just knit stitches and we will
just work according to the color change of your size as instructed in your pattern and then we
will finish off the sweater with a special edging. We will work a few rounds in half twisted ribbing
and then we will work another section of knit rounds and then bind off those edging with the
classic knit bind off and this creates a rolled edging which is looking very very nice in my
opinion. Then we are ready to start working on our sleeves. For the sleeves we pick up stitches along
the armholes and then we start to work German short rows here along the shoulder line and we
will work the sleeve caps back and forth in rows with German short rows to shape the sleeves in
here and to work this stripe in the contrast color as well which matches this stripe along the body.
A very special design feature of this design. Once we have joined everything to the round we
can finish the sleeves in stockinette stitches around with a few decreases for a slight sleeve
shaping and then we will work the same edging at the cuffs we have worked for the body of the
sweater before and last but not least we will finish off our neckline with the same edging we
have worked along the bottom hem and the cuffs of our sweater we work the rounds in half twisted
ribbons twisted knit stitches and then our rolled edging with a few stockinette stitch round and a
classic knit bind off and then our Teo sweater is ready to be worn. The design is relatively close
to the body it's relatively fitted especially because of the shoulder construction it's not
oversized along the shoulder section and the sleeves are fitted as well the body is worked
without shaping but it's close to the bust and to the waist but of course you can adapt the
amount of positive ease individually if you prefer to have more positive ease you can work a size
larger in comparison to your bust circumference if you prefer to have less positive ease you
can work a smaller size in comparison to your bust circumference that's up to you.
All you need to work up your version of this color-blocking Teo sweater
is the written pattern which is available on my website and brew gallery and then you just
need to pick out colors for your version of the design and then you can start knitting your Teo
sweater. Have fun! Start to cast on the required number of stitches given for your size in your
written pattern of the Teo sweater. I'm using a long tail cast on but of course you can use
any other cast on method you prefer. The first row after casting on is a wrong side row
there you purl all stitches except the edge stitches the first and the last stitch these
are knit stitches or if you want to use a different edge stitch method you are welcome to use it as well
now just continue to work in stockinette stitch
back and forth in rows for the number of rows given in your written pattern
we are now ready to work the increases to shape the armholes the increases are worked as
a left leaning increase make one left after the first three stitches and a right leaning increase
before the last three three stitches make one right this is how to work a left leaning increase
and a right leaning increase the increases are now repeated a couple of times depending on the
size you are knitting and you can find the number of repetitions for the increases in your written
pattern for some sizes you have to work increases in wrong side rows as well they are worked after
the first three stitches and before the last three stitches and they are worked as purl increases
and this is how to increase a purl stitch
the back part is now finished i have worked the first stripe in the contrasting color
and i have ended with right side row meaning we have cut the yarn here and not in the wrong
side row afterwards but everything is going to work out don't worry the pattern is written this
way we will now cast on stitches along the front parts and work along the back part and will work
the front part we will now cast on stitches along the cast on row of the back part to work the two
front panels separately we will start here and work the left front part here and then we will
pick up stitches here to work the right front panel here pick up the number of stitches written
down in your written pattern for the size you are knitting and i'm using the first color our main
color and i am going to pick up one stitch for one stitch along the cast on edging of our back part
and now work in stockinette stitch for the number of rows given in your written pattern
we will now start to work the round neck by working increases after the first three stitches
and we are working left leaning increases on the left front part the remaining stitches are worked
in stockinette stitch back and forth in rows and now repeat the number of increases as written
down in your written pattern the round neck increases along the left front part are now
finished and we will mirror everything for the right front part meaning we will pick up stitches
here work a couple of rows in stockinette stitch and then works increases along the right front
part before the last three stitches as make one right make one right before the last three stitches
work the remaining stitches in stockinette stitch and then repeat the increases to
shape the round neck of the right front part a couple of times as written down in your written
pattern we have now finished the right front part as well with the round neck increases and
now we can join both front parts by casting on new stitches in between therefore take up your
knitting needles knit all stitches of the right front part after the last stitch cast on the number
of stitches given in your written pattern and now take up your left front part and knit the stitches
of the left front part we now have joined the two front panels by casting on new stitches for them
for the neckline our round neck and now we will work back and forth in stockinette stitch in rows
and repeat the instructions for the armhole shaping and the first color change
as we did for the back part before therefore just follow your written pattern
the front part is now finished we have shaped the armholes at both sides of the front part
as we have worked the back part before and now it's time to join front part and back part
by casting on new stitches under our armpits therefore we will take up
our back part first we will change again to the main color we will work our back part first
for the back part knit all stitches until you have worked the last stitch of the back part
now cast on the number of new stitches given in your written pattern for the size you are knitting
now take up the stitches of your front part knit all stitches of the front part and then
repeat the instructions to cast on new stitches under your second armpit after casting on our
last stitch under our second armpit we will place a stitch marker this is our beginning of the round
now you just need to work in stockinette stitch in the round
with remembering the instructions for the color change given for your size and the written pattern
and then you will be done sooner with the body than you might imagine
when knitting in the round with two colors at once there's a little trick how to avoid
stairs when changing the color and it's called jockless color change when knitting in the round
so we have worked all rounds until we have reached our stitch marker we can cut the yarn
of our first color and then we will pick up the strands of our second color and now we just
knit one round until we have reached our stitch marker again we have reached again our stitch
marker slip the marker and now pull up the stitch under the first stitch knit in your second color
so it's the first stitch of the round before in your first color and they are now both on your
knitting needles and now knit them together and now you can continue knitting in stockinette
stitch in the round and after tightening the strands in the end there won't be a much visible
color change it's close to be invisible i always recommend to cut the yarn because
this delivers the neatest result possible
we are now ready to work the hem with the rolled edging for the body of our teo sweater
and therefore we will change the needle size first as instructed in your written pattern
now work for a few rounds in half twisted ribbing with twisted knit stitches and normal
purl stitches twisted knit stitches and normal purl stitches
repeat this for the number of rounds instructed in your written
pattern as you can see your hem should look like similar to mine now you have worked a couple of
rounds in half twisted ribbing with twisted knit stitches then a few more rounds in stockinette
stitch as recommended in your written pattern and now we bind off the stitches with a classic
knit bind off to create this rolled edging of our sweater and this is how to bind off the stitches
with a classic knit bind off knit one stitch knit the next stitch and now slip the stitch you have
worked before over the next stitch and you have bound off one stitch and this is now repeated
until you have bound off all stitches i recommend to keep an eye out for your knitting tension so
that the bind off won't be too tight this happens often to me when binding off the
stitches with a classic knit bind off with mohair yarn only
sleeves are worked with german short rows and we first have to pick up stitches along our
armholes here i prefer to start under the armpit as it makes it easier for me to evenly pick up
the stitches on both sides of my armhole but if you want to avoid weaving in two more ends
you can start shortly before the shoulder seam and then pick up stitches here so that you don't
need to cut the yarn when working the german short rows if you want to have it a little bit easier
like i do you can start here but then you will need to cut the yarn and slip the stitches to
start over with the german short rows here insert your needle and pull the yarn in your contrast
color two through and now you are going to repeat this to pick up one stitch for one stitch
and once you have reached the sides of your armhole you will pick up two stitches for three
rows depending on the size you are knitting you sometimes have a different pick up rate
than i do here so please read carefully through the pattern so that you can pick up the stitches
evenly along both armholes now i need to cut the yarn because i have ended under my armpit
and i will need to slip the stitches without knitting them until there are four stitches
left before our shoulder seam here so i have to slip all stitches here
from the left knitting needle onto the right knitting needle
i have now slipped all stitches until there are four stitches before our shoulder seam left
and now we can start working the german short rows pick up the yarn of your contrast color
and now work four stitches before the shoulder seam and four stitches after the shoulder seam
which means we have knitted eight stitches in total now turn your work around
slip the first stitch with yarn in front and pull the yarn up so that the stitch
shows two legs and now purl all stitches this is the first stitch we have knitted
it's a little bit looser but you can tighten the strand afterwards and now purl one more stitch
turn your work around slip the first stitch pull the yarn up so that the stitch shows two legs
and now knit all stitches until you reach the stitch with two legs and knit this stitch as
one stitch knit the next stitch turn your work around and now it's just about repeat and repeat
to work the stitches we have picked up along our armholes as german short rows and to shape
the sleeve caps with german short rows as well this is a stitch with two legs and in wrong side
rows it has to be purled knit the next stitch as well turn your work around and this is now repeated
and repeated and repeated for most of the time you work one stitch after the stitch with two legs
and then you turn your work around for the german short rows but shortly before this contrast color
stripe here you have to work two stitches after the stitch with two legs and then you will turn
your work around so please read carefully through the written instructions of your written pattern
so that you don't miss the point where you will work two stitches instead of one stitch after the
stitch with two legs we have now worked the sleeve cap with german short rows as instructed in the
written pattern and we are now ready to work the stripe in our contrast color along our sleeves
meeting the other stripes in the contrast color around our upper body therefore cut the yarn of the
color you have currently been using pick up your contrast color now we slip the stitch
along the stripe in the contrast color along the body on our knitting needle in our left hand
and then we will start working this row with our contrast color by knitting this stitch
we have worked here a double stitch because i have pulled the yarn up to create a stitch with two
legs knit it together as one stitch and then knit all stitches in the contrast color until you reach
the other stitch with two legs when you reach the next stitch with two legs knit this stitch together
and then knit the next picked up stitch now turn your work around slip the first
stitch pull the yarn up so that you create a stitch with two legs again and now purl all
stitches back until you reach the first stitch worked in your contrast color
knit this stitch and knit the next stitch in your other color
you can tighten the strands in the end so that everything will look
tidy and neat then turn your work around slip the first stitch pull the yarn up so that it
creates a stitch with two legs and now knit all stitches until you reach the other side
and the stitches two legs in the contrast color there now finish the round by knitting all stitches
and knit the stitch with two leg as one stitch and now continue to knit all stitches until you
reach the middle of your armpit and now we can place a stitch marker here we can cut the yarn
and now we will continue to work the sleeves in stockinette stitch in the round as we have
finished the german short rows now and we have finished our stripe in the contrast color as well
here's again a stitch with two leg which is worked as one stitch and now it's just stockinette stitch
in the round according to the color change pattern this is how your sleeve should look
like after working the sleeve caps with german short rows and of course the stripe in the
contrasting color which means it meets exactly the other stripe along the body in the contrasting
color we have worked for a couple of rounds in stockinette stitch and if you like you can work
decreases for a slight sleeve shaping the decreases take place every few rounds and they take place
one stitch after the stitch marker and two stitches before the stitch marker and i'm going to show you
now how to work the decreases now knit the first stitch after the stitch marker then knit two
stitches together now knit all stitches until there are two stitches left before your stitch
marker and now knit those two stitches together as well and now continue to work in stockinette
stitch for the couple of rounds written down in your written pattern and then you can work the
next decreases if you think you have worked enough decreases you can leave them out and just continue
to work in stockinette stitch until you can work your cuffs and besides all the stockinette stitch
remember to work according to the color change written down in your written pattern
when you have reached your wrists you can change the needle size as recommended in your written
pattern and then you will work the sleeve cuffs matching to the bottom hem of the sweatshirt
at the bottom hem we have worked it in the contrast color and here we have used the different
contrast color for our sleeves but the instructions are pretty much the same work in half twisted
ribbing for a few rounds then work a few knit rounds and bind off the stitches with a classic
knit bind off and then you just need to repeat the instructions for the second sleeve
the neckline is finished off with a collar in half twisted ribbing and with a rolled edging
as well matching the sleeves cuffs and the bottom hem of our sweater first of all we need to start
to pick up stitches along the collar i always start at one shoulder at one shoulder seam to
pick up stitches but you can start at the middle of your back part as well that's up to you you
will pick up the stitches following the same logic as you have picked up stitches for the sleeves
before pick up one stitch per one stitch or two stitches for three rows now place a stitch marker
and now work the collar as instructed in your written pattern this is how the collar should
look like we have picked up the stitches worked the ribbing with twisted knit stitches so we
worked half twisted ribbing ribbing technically spoken and then we worked a few more rounds in
stockinette stitch and then bound off the stitches with a classic knit bind off
to create this rolled edging of our neckline
we are now done working our teo sweater the next step is a good bath and a block
for our sweater you can use your blocking mats if preferred or you can just let him dry
flat on a towel on the floor and then you can weave in the ends afterwards
we are now done i hope you have successfully finished your version of the design i cannot
wait to see your version of the teal sweater so if you like share your work on instagram
