Edna White and health professional Tavares Alan Garrett discuss the \"Body Synthesis\" approach, arguing that physical wellness is the essential foundation for all professional and personal success. They explore the intersection of mindset, nutrition, and sustainable habits, emphasizing that treating the body as an asset rather than a tool prevents burnout and fosters long-term achievement.
What if the reason you're exhausted, overwhelmed, stuck, and struggling to focus isn't a lack of
motivation? What if your body has been trying to get you your attention for years? Many people are
trying to build businesses, relationships, wealth, and purpose while ignoring the very vehicle
carrying their life. Today we're talking about why your health isn't separate from your success.
It's the foundation of it. Put your listening ears on and get what you need to keep it real.
Today I am sitting with none other than the certified fitness, no excuse me, the NASM
certified professional and the owner of Body Synthesis. He's a servant, he's a mentor,
a motivational speaker, energy giver, and a podcast and TV host. So he's got it all going on
and we are really excited to have him on today. So without further ado, my name is Edna White and
this is Keeping It Real On Purpose. Your next move, our guest Tavares Alan Garrett. Welcome
to the show. Thank you Edna. Thank you very much. Hello everyone. Thank you for having me here.
Looking forward to this. Been looking forward to this. Okay. Yeah, absolutely. And congratulations
to you on all your accolades with your show. Thank you. I've done some looking, I've done
some looking, and so you've been doing your thing for a while. So congratulations on all that. Thank
you so much. Thank you. Absolutely. You're welcome. It's an honor to, I guess, you know how it is
being on a different platform. You have to do what you do best, what you love to do, and you do it
with all fervency like you do. Absolutely. Absolutely. So thank you for joining us again
today. I want to get right into it. So what pattern do you see causing people to sabotage
their health, their energy, and their longevity, even when they know exactly what they should be
doing? Oh my goodness. It's the pattern that says I can do it later. That's the main,
that's the pattern. That is, you know, that thought process right there, just that phrase,
I can do it later. It's so woven into who we are as people, as a society. We're so quick to think
that we have tomorrow. And so as we continue to adapt that belief, so does our body, right?
What we speak, how we speak, the words that we choose to use, the intention behind said words
or phrases, the energy, all of that impacts us biologically. And so when we think about
our language and how it impacts us as human beings biologically, now we're talking about,
you know, neurology right there. Right. And so when people continuously tell themselves,
for example, I'm tired, I'm tired, I'm tired. Yeah. Always tired. I mean, it's the proof is
in the pudding and in the words that you're choosing to use to describe one of the most
important people in your life. So this is the pattern that I see all the time. I can do it
later. I can, you know, let me finish my work first and nothing wrong. I want people to, you
know, do what they got to do to get, you know, take care of themselves and their family. Sure.
However, that conversation shifts a bit, Edna, when we have found ourselves on the back burner.
Absolutely. Yeah. And that is something I come across. I mean, all the time.
Absolutely. I can tell you, Tavares, that you get busy in life and then life kind of takes,
consumes you and then your health gets put in the back burner, like you said. But then,
you know, we have to start thinking or doing something from a health scare. And it's sad to
say that, you know, it's really sad to say that that does happen for some of us. You know,
I know for myself, like trying to get ahead in life, you forget that part, to take care of
yourself. But then as I got older, after a couple of accidents and things like that,
I realized that I command like my life. OK. You know, even when I was applying for a job later
on in life, they said, oh, you have to be at nine. I said, oh, I can't. I got to meditate
and I got to exercise. Oh, no, I can't. They were looking at me like, why? No, I can't.
I'm sorry. What was that?
They said that to me and I was like, it's OK. And I got up and I started to walk away
because at that point I was I I loved my life and I understood the temple. And this body takes me
around wherever I need to go. So that's without the health and the taking care of it, I would not
be here. So we do get caught up in life. And it's the scary part is waiting to something like
detrimental happening. That's right. And a lot of the illnesses that we, you know,
may or may not come across, some of them don't wait until you don't feel well.
They're already happening, been happening. And by the time we get that phone call,
email, text message, however they're communicating these days,
you know, we don't we don't want it to be the kind of messaging that's going to speak to
what we have left in terms of our light. Right. And so I say to individuals, often those that
I work with come across, whether it's traveling, no matter where I'm at, do all you can to put
yourself first, because we do command a lot of ourselves every single day, moment to moment,
second to second, et cetera. Right. And in doing so, well, we've got to be able to rejuvenate
that energy, Edna. And it's very important that we make that time where we take the time to make
that time to carve out that space, even if it's five minutes. Yeah, exactly. Exactly.
And that helps us to recenter and realign, which is what wellness is. It's about
balance and alignment. That's exactly what it comes down to. And so when our lives
begin to reflect something that is perhaps out of alignment, perhaps it's been dating with
imbalance. Right. Yeah. Then things you and I both know things begin to happen. Energy, right. Energy
begins to just shift. And all of a sudden you get this phone call from a friend who's going through
something and that energy now. And now we're dealing with that. And so it's very important
that we try to do all that we can as the individual, the spirit, the self. Absolutely.
To maintain a sustainable base of balance and alignment. And we can start doing that by taking
small steps to obtain big results. I love that. I love that. I love that whole. I love it. We forget
about that part, that spiritual part of us that needs a rejuvenation and sleep to sleep. You need
that. You know, that's that part right there. I've always loved to sleep when it was time to sleep.
It wasn't like I, you know, I wanted to just lay down and go to sleep. It's like when it was time
for me to sleep, I embraced it. I was like, yeah, you know, it was like, yeah, he was charged right
here. Yes. So like, you know, I go out with my friends, they were like, oh, it's 11 o'clock.
Edna's getting out of here. I said, I'm overdue. I have to sleep. Okay. I need my sleep. And,
and it's so important. Those things are so important. And then your spiritual life.
I started meditating about 15 years ago. Okay. I started off with five, five minutes.
Nice. That's good. I mean, and then it grew over time. And then I was like, I can't do without
this. This, this centers my whole being, you know, I can't do without it. And then, you know,
the other important pattern you were talking about is the words we say to ourselves.
Yes. You know, oh, my back is hurting.
All this stuff. We say these things. We even say, you know, I got, I, they'll say my cancer. I'm
right. The wrong words. It's just the wrong words. You can't claim that you don't want that.
Yeah. It's like my cancer or this or that. And several years ago, I had a very bad accident.
And I remember rubbing my leg and it was like, oh, you're going to have arthritis because both
of my hips were broken. And I was like, I was rubbing my leg. I said, no, I'm not.
And I still like now to this day, my mother's like, you never say that you don't feel well.
I said, you know why? Because if I if I mean, if I say it, it's going to be worse. And I said,
these are things just going to happen to my body. So I learned to exercise, stretch and
bear with it. I don't take any medicine. And they're they're they're so amazed at the doctors.
They have to get somebody to come in like, you're not on medicine. I said, no,
I'll be right back. I'll be right back. And they bring the RN in. It's like,
you're not on medicine. I said, no. Good for you. So it's it's what you're saying
is so important. Audience, this is so important for us to really realize
patterns in eating. Can we talk about that part? Oh, yeah, for sure. Patterns in eating.
So for myself, my last meal, I'm in bed by about nine, nine thirty. Right. So I have this thing
where I don't eat three hours before bed. I try not to. Right. And the reason is simple. It's
because I want to allow my body to digest the food, break it down and begin to metabolize.
Because it's going to use it to help to replenish, you know, my overall body production while I
sleep, including my brain. Right. So not eating three hours before bed allows the body to go into
a deeper sleep sooner. So you reach REM sleep sooner. And then since the body has already been
probably digesting by a three hour window, you've already broken down your food for the most part.
The body is now metabolizing. So when or has already begun. And by the time you get into that,
that sooner, REM sleep signifies the end of the metabolizing.
So when that begins to happen, we also allow our fat stores to burn overnight. In other words,
any additional energy that the body is going to need to help with the rejuvenation of the body,
the brain, anything, all of it. Right. Hair, skin, all of it. Well, now it's going to go ahead and
it's going to lean on the fat stores. These are our internal fat stores. This is where,
you know, fat gets stored internally until we decide to use it. In fact, in my practice,
we don't even use the words. I don't use the word diet or fat because diet,
we change diet for the word for menu. So to the same diet, that's great work. I'm going to write
and then instead of saying fat, we just say surplus of energy because that's exactly what it
is. Anybody who is quote unquote, not my words, but there's overweight. Well, that's just simply
a surplus of energy. Yeah. So when I say it to you like that, it just signals to you,
I got some energy to burn, to burn. Right. And that's it. Like there's no,
you don't feel a kind of way about it. You don't look in the mirror and say, oh yeah, I got.
No, because the understanding is when you hear surplus of energy, it means you got to bring
all together. Yeah, that's it. You got to burn more energy. So not eating three hours before
bed. That's a huge win because I've had individuals in my practice lose inches overnight
after getting it to within say an hour of their bedtime. When you get consistently with things
like this, like not eating two, three hours before bedtime, you begin to see the results
of that decision. And this is where the body synthesis health continuum comes into play.
The health continuum is pretty much your wellness utility belt. That's what it is. It's everything
that you consider wellness, whether it's a walk in the park, a swim, a meditation. So
when we understand our eating patterns, we are now able to rely on the body synthesis health
continuum or the wellness continuum to help support those moments where we may feel like
we want a snack. A lot of the times that we want a snack, we're just simply thirsty. That's just
really what it is. You're dehydrated. Like we're dehydrated probably the majority of the day,
simply because we're all on go-go mode, right? Everyone's going, everyone's going here,
going here, phone calls, emails, text messages, all that takes energy. And being that we're like
80% water or more, well, we got to consume more because we're using more. So this is why I find
it very important to cook at home. I don't eat fast food. I haven't had fast food and I can't
even tell you because it's not sustainable. In other words, in my big picture, fast food is just
not sustainable because one, there's no health benefits. So why am I even going to go spend that
money? Oh, to make somebody else rich. I rather put that back into my own piggy bank. And you're
hungry right after it. So it just doesn't even matter. I quit that a long time ago as well.
Right. And you save money, you cook at home, you know what's in your food, you know what kind of
oil you're using. So I say develop great habits and then habits stack. So if you have one good
habit, that's like, I come home from work and I take a walk. Well, a way to stack another good
habit on top of that walk would say, you know, I'm going to do, I'm going to go ahead and I'm
going to bring out, I'm going to, excuse me, I'm going to saute these veggies or I take the veggies
out because we want to stack on top of those habits. This is a very easy way for an individual
to put together a routine without intentionally trying to put together a routine. Right. So we
treat our eating habits the same way because you're a vehicle, like I'm a vehicle. So we
energy in, energy out. That's the tagline for the body synthesis. It's very simple. Energy in,
what we consume, energy out, we must use. That's that simple. When we consume and we don't use,
we get the surplus of energy. Right. Very simple. Yeah. So anytime we're eating more than we're
burning, this is a good opportunity to move the body. Right. And that's it. That's the basics
when it comes to fit nutrition and wellness. Energy in. That is so very true because
once I started walking several years ago after the accident, I made it my business to walk at
least two miles a day. Good for you. Yeah. So I do it now. And like I had to have, you know,
my two hips replaced just this past year and they was like, wow, you just like recovered so well
because I was, I was doing, I was moving, you know, and moving, you know, moving all the time.
And then I was prepared. So when I was, it was that easy, it was that easy to kind of like heal
and be, you know, uh, much better, feel much better. Um, many people start, I was going to
ask you this. Many people start, um, health journeys and I know I've done it a couple of
times repeatedly, but they struggle to stay consistent. What mindset shift happens for
someone to move from temporary motivation to lasting transformation? Commitment. How do they
use seeing the future you? So to get someone to move from say, I'm kind of stuck. Like I know what
I need to do. I've been doing this. I want to see more because what I'm doing right now isn't
working to getting them to get to transformation ready. That's a matter of consistency. Gotcha.
That's exactly what that is. It's a little bit of what you mentioned a second ago about moving.
You recovered sooner because the intention, you knew what was coming. You knew you had
a surgery coming. You knew already before the surgery happened that you didn't want to be
sitting down afterward. You knew already that's a matter of commitment. That's a matter of you
seeing the future version of you post surgery. So there was a part of the process and I wasn't
even there with you and I know this happened. There's a part of the process that you saw
yourself going through this whole thing and you saw this whole thing happening. Absolutely.
This is where we get into the visualization. The body synthesis is built on four pillars,
mind, body, spirit, and nutrition. So now we're into the spirit space of the body synthesis.
You have to see yourself in this space. And I often say this to my supporters and to my clients,
make sure you see yourself in your journey. If you don't, we got to sit down a little bit longer,
just a little bit longer. In other words, just be still. Just be still. Don't think about nothing.
You saw yourself in your journey that played a huge role just into the biological signaling
that you were signaling to yourself on a molecular level. So now we're talking about
where you are metabolically. So you improved yourself on a metabolic level. You got healthier
because you knew what was coming. That starts in here. That starts right up in the mind. That's
exactly how when I said earlier, now we're talking about neurology, neuroscience, speaking, vocals,
vibration, biology. Psychology influences biology, biology influences physiology.
Everything's connected. So it's a matter of consistency. It's a matter of individuals seeing
themselves in that journey. How bad do you want it? When I say how bad do you want it? I'm not
saying I'm willing to walk over a hot coal. No. I'm talking about how bad do you want it? Do you
see it? Can you see it? Can you describe it to me? When we hit that level of commitment,
I call that the gamma part, the gamma frequency. When we hit that, this is when things come to us
rather easy. Edna, you've probably experienced this several times in your career. Things just
come to you very easy. It's like water just flows. It's so easy. That's the gamma frequency
of the brain. So that happens through consistency. That happens through repetition. That happens
through showing up and showing out for yourself. That happens because you see a version of yourself
that you are not willing to let go of. You want to meet that version of yourself.
And that's what happened with you. You knew that you didn't want to sit down after the surgery.
You already knew that. You committed to it. The doctor said, I'm going to do the surgery. You
was like, yep. You had already committed to the other side of that yet. And this is why you were
able to heal the way that you were because not everyone would heal like you did. And that's real.
And that goes along with what you said earlier about how you speak to yourself. You're not always
telling yourself that you're not doing well. You always understand that you're going to bounce back
and be back. Always making yourself up. Always seeing yourself. Always claiming the victory.
We got to always claim the victory. You're going to get me preaching now. You're going to get me
preaching now. Let me slow it down. I am ordained. Let me slow it down a little bit. It's always a
good time for church. It's exciting. It does. It gets exciting. That's what I believe it's about
right there. There is no special sauce. That's the mindset is what do you want to see from you?
What do you want to see more out of you? That's the mindset. I could talk about motivation,
inspiration. I could talk about all that stuff. And all that's great. But if we are not seeing
ourselves in that journey, then we have to regroup. And that's it. It's not like the
bottom hasn't completely fallen out. It's not that. It's just, let's really tighten this up
a little bit. What more do we want of ourselves? I'm turning X this year. What more do I want with
this part of my life? You follow what I'm saying? Absolutely. I do. It's that challenge.
It's like an indirect love tap for yourself. It's like, yo, we did our 30s. We did this in our 30s.
How about this? Where am I? Do I want to improve my financial literacy in my 40s? Things like that,
those kinds of challenges. I got it. Box checked. We got it. It's important. Done.
Now that we got that out of the way, what else can we do? How else can we feed our spirits? How
else can we harvest more of the spirituality that we walk with or talk with? Or how can we
have it to where our food is more organic? How are we spending our time with our life?
What is that energy like? Because if you're asking me, everything that we're a part of
and all things are part of us, that's wellness. Wellness to me is not just one thing.
It's the conversations that I hold, that I have. It's the love that I share.
It's the way that I speak of myself and others when they're looking and not looking.
You're not looking. Absolutely.
It's just this whole world of energy that I think a lot often, look, I'm progress, not perfection.
So what that means simply is I'm going to give myself a little leniency where leniency should
be given, but not to get it twisted. I'm not going to just be acting as if I could just do
what I want either. I love that. I love the progress, not perfection. I love that.
Thank you. I say that to myself daily. That's one of those.
That's one of those daily doses.
Like a little HIIT workout.
That's one of those daily doses. I get it.
I mean, you know, the day, you know, there's a lot that we can get bothered by in the day
if we allow ourselves to. And if we do that, then we are taking energy away from ourselves
and we're taking it away from an area of our lives.
But instead, we want to make sure that we're getting heard over here because somebody
I don't know, cut us off or I don't know, did something. It comes down to just choices,
you know, progress, not perfection. That leaves a little bit of that room, Edna,
for us to be flexible with ourselves, which I find is probably one of the most underrated
understandings of the self. Allow the self enough room to be flexible.
I love everything that you said. And audience, I guess there were so many questions in there.
I cannot write them down. I want you to replay this again.
But audience, ask yourself, when was the last time I treated my body like an asset?
That's what I'll guess. Many of us expect our bodies to carry stress,
poor sleep, emotional overload, you know, unhealthy habits, unrealistic demands without
consequences. The last part is eventually the bill has got to be paid. Health is something
that you sacrifice to reach success. It's something built to sustain success. We have to
sustain this body to be successful. And that's all our guest is saying today, which is amazing.
But write all those questions down and ask yourself all those questions.
Yeah, definitely.
Go ahead. What was you gonna say?
Edna, this is I love your vibe. I love the show. No doubt about it. I know it's only like a half
hour. We can keep talking. I love that question. You just posted, you know, everyone, including
myself. Let's ask ourselves those questions, everyone. Absolutely. Ask yourself that question
multiple times a day if you have to. Asking the question a lot of the times myself represents a
matter of being present with self. Because of there being so much to do throughout the day,
phone calls, text messages, emails, I mean, Amazon, FedEx, it's crazy. UPS, everybody coming
to the door. And USPS, I can't forget them. And so taking that moment, I think it's more
crucial than it's ever been. And it's ever been. I think in order to be able to stop,
pop out of the rat race, and take five minutes to yourself, that takes real intention. That
takes real self-care. You got to really pay attention to that in order for that to actually
happen. In a world where everything's a swipe, a click, a push away.
It takes you more energy and time to unplug and remove yourself emotionally
than it does to unlog off one of these platforms. That is by design.
What ends up happening is we stop paying attention to areas of our lives that are very,
very important. This is why you got that one commercial called Rocket Mortgage. You ever
think about, why would a credit card company want me to know about my subscriptions? It's
simple. Because in a world of swipes, clicks, pushes, buttons, lights, all these notifications,
it is so easy to get taken for a ride in the wrong direction. And so this is why we're talking
about fit nutrition and wellness. I'm talking about the mind, the body, the spirit, and nutrition.
All of those pillars will always be at play. They're at play right now. They're going to stay
at play. Nobody is the exception to the rule. Taking the time to make time is always going to
be key if you are looking to have or create a sustainable way of living. I just want to thank
you for creating a space for myself to come in here and to share and to be a part of your orbit
with a like-minded spirit, which I'm all here. I'm always here for it. I just want to say thank
you very, very much. You're welcome. I'm not finished with you yet. Oh, okay. You're doing
the exit. Stop doing the exit. I got about 10 minutes myself. You're doing the whole exit.
At least you know I'm ready with my exit. I hear you. All right. I'll let that exit stay there.
Thank you. We have a round. We have a round. You are the best. A flash round. We're going to rock
again. Yeah, yeah. Definitely. We have a flash round that you answer the question real quick.
Oh, nice. Okay. Five questions so the audience can get some more jewels from you, okay? All
right. All right. Let's do it. Let's do it. What's the biggest myth people believe about
getting healthy? That it takes forever. Oh, good. One habit everyone should start this week.
Drink water. What's one food or health behavior people underestimate?
They underestimate drinking water. Real talk. Water is amazing. It does more than people really
give it credit for. Yeah, I totally agree too. Yeah, water for sure. Yeah, water. What does
true transformation mean beyond weight loss? Oh my goodness. A sustainable way of living
in the positive and the now that fits your vision. That is what it is right there.
That's beautiful. That's great. You've really given us some great information. Thank you so
much for being here. We've been talking with Tavaris Allen Garrett about-
Tavaris. Tavaris Allen. Tavaris. But I love it though. You know what? But I'm here for it, Edna.
I'm here for it. So that's what I'm saying. This is on the record. I want everybody to know
I'm here for it. I'm here for Edna. I love the faith that she's created. She is a true queen.
She knows what she's doing. She always is in a position to lift spirits and to lift voices.
And like I said, I did my homework so I know who I'm talking to. I know who I'm talking to.
My mother always taught me, boy, don't you go into interviews and not know who you're talking to.
Absolutely. Do your homework. Absolutely. I'm going to leave you alone because
you are a magnanimous. That's all I got to say about all of that. All of that.
And this has been, you know, amazing with you. And we got to have you back.
Maybe even do some exercises or something. You really have something really, you know,
awesome to do. But yes, you'll see him again. And we're so excited to meet him. So glad that he's
here. This is Edna White and this is Keeping It Real On Purpose, your next move. We're going to
say goodbye for you right now. Bye now. Bye bye. Oh my gosh.
