“Off the Desk” is a non-scripted, podcast-style show where morning anchors Kaelee Collins and Julia O’Keefe talk about a range of topics in a more casual setting.
Good Wednesday morning and welcome to off the desk. I'm Julia O'Keefe and I'm Chris Bozakis and I'm Nick Antonakis
Look at that gang's all here. Happy weather Wednesday
And finally today it's looking like the beginning of uh, what's gonna feel like a june week because these morning temperatures
Yeah, not feeling like june. No, it doesn't feel like june doesn't feel like it's almost summer
Not at all, but today will be a really really nice day
um
I mentioned it this morning at the end of the news that
Typically in the year I try to like name like my top 10 days of like, you know
Just give people like a heads up. Like it's really gonna be nice
And I I put this one into a top 10 category
Do you actually like keep a record and write the dates down and then I was gonna say that'd be interesting
Um, I did last year. I haven't this this year. I don't think i've named one
There was a couple in may that were nice days
But I feel like I really load them up come like the fall like september october
Like those are when you get like some really nice days weather-wise, but today's gonna be like low humidity low 80s
Nothing, but sun
Light breeze. I mean really can't ask for a better day. Um, considering it's early june. So
Get outside if you can enjoy it
Uh, we do have some heat on the way though for the end of the week
We're gonna climb back to the low 90s by friday and saturday we could be near 90 tomorrow
but yeah, this is gonna get hot so
Hope you enjoyed the cooler weather if you're a fan of that because uh, it is gonna get quite warm around here
I mean, I think we're heading into that
More summer-like weather pattern now. So yeah, it's time. I mean even i've been looking forward to summer
So I'm excited for it to feel like summer. Of course. I like to be by the beach
Yeah, or a pool when the temperatures start to get really warm
Um, i've questioned for you guys though. So if you had to pick one, I mean obviously in new england
We get all the seasons right temperatures vary every day. We've seen that this week weather whiplash we like to call it
but I feel like today's
Weather would be like my perfect day that I could if you could only have one day
One temperature one weather always what would it be? Oh, man, I would say like high 70s low humidity late breeze
I feel like that's the perfect combination
Mine's ultra specific. I just thought of it in my head
So first it's got to be it's like a fall day. Okay clear skies sunny
we get to like highs of like
60 62. Oh, okay the high of the day 60 but then by nights we're like upper 30s
So like it's warm enough you go outside you can spend the day outside
Nice round of golf and unfortunately, it's not beach weather come fall
But like, you know, you can still get outside do something like that
And then by the time night rolls around it's still cool enough that you know
You got to turn on the heat a little bit, you know cook something in the oven warm for dinner, you know
something like that you get the best of both worlds like the winter aspect in the house and then you also have like
The the warm outdoorsy sort of day too. I like it. I could agree
I could I mean, yeah, the fall is one of the best. I mean that's like october
You have like
Some of the warmer days, you know 60s and you know, you can go outside and it's not too hot
But it's very comfortable and you get those really nice cool nights like really really nice. Yeah
um, so i'd have to agree with you on that nick, but i'm also kind of crazy and
I enjoy
Winter obviously people know that like I fall and winter my two favorite like from from october through
The winter is like my favorite time of the year
um
I'll i'll either take a beautiful sunny day temperatures in like the other 60s with like a cool breeze. Yeah
Yeah, or give me just like a full-on snow storm. Yeah, like temperatures. I love a good snow
Yeah, you guys I could not get behind that my absolute nightmare weather is high humidity
Temperatures in the 90s. I'm in the same boat lots of sun. I can't do the heat and humidity
Dry heat is different dry. He's different. I mean it reminds me of grease when it's very dry and hot
Yeah, whatever like, okay, that's fine. You're not going to be like
sweating the second you step out step outside because you have it's more dry, but like
the humidity just
Kills me, especially when it's like those days that are like
75 at night. Oh, yeah, like there's no escape
And like sleeping in the heat is the no matter where you go. You feel like you just got like a wet shower
Yeah, that's awful. No, no, no, no
That's funny. So I mean between the between the three of us we covered all the seasons really wait
What is your ideal day? I said honestly like a day like today. I like
Yeah, I like the summer weather. I mean fall itself is just always beautiful
But I think I I would like
The early summer vibes where it's low humidity and the light breeze so you can still enjoy
The summer weather in a way and also that's a mix like a 75 degree day
You can be by the beach or the pool and maybe be a little chilly, but you're not sweltering and it's comfortable to still enjoy
Summer activities. Yeah, I don't know. I go back and forth though because I love a crisp
In the summertime I can get behind like a 75 80 degree day with like, oh, yeah, that's great beautiful. That's awesome
Once you get like around 90 or higher. Yeah
So it looks like this weekend we're gonna see that so
Well, apparently it's too humid, right? It won't be it'll be a little muggy, but it's not gonna be too humid
But it is i'ma be warm. Yeah
I will i'll be outside all weekend. So trust me. I love every season. That's what we get living in new england every season
but um
I just don't like when it gets so hot. I mean
I'm a fall
Cooler cooler weather
Well, we have to get past summer, but then that will come it will come
I don't want to say before we do it because I want it like summer's just starting
Today's show was talking about christmas shopping this morning. That's insane. Yes. Yeah, it's not even like a christmas
And I in my earpiece I hear christmas music i'm like what is that and I look over with the today show on
And they're talking about holiday shopping and i'm just like it's june 3rd. Yeah, let's just
Unless if it's to rerun it on christmas day, so you don't have to work christmas day fine
but I mean other than that you should not be talking about christmas shopping right now and it's
Way too early for that. You know, let's not consider christmas in july
They always play elf on tv like for the christmas special. Um, I don't know what that's about
Like what what is the point of christmas in july? Okay, I guess because it's six months. It's like the half birthday
The halfway is june 25th
Yeah, it would be june 25th
Yeah, you're right. Actually. I don't know. Wow, maybe maybe it's supposed to be you know, when it gets into those really hot 90 degree
Yeah, give you more we're having a winter mindset to kind of cool things off. I guess our brains even if it doesn't really
I don't know. There's that weather wednesday a couple other things going on today. Um, it's national egg day guys
How do you like eggs I feel like this is a it's it's a hit or miss between people some people really don't like eggs
Yeah, people really do. I love an egg dish. I do. I like eggs. Yeah
Yeah, i'm a fan of eggs. You too. I feel like I when I go out to breakfast I lean like savory
Egg dishes versus pancakes or french toast. Yeah, I feel like we've had this conversation. Yeah, I think this has come up. Yeah
But how do you eat your eggs typically scrambled if i'm just gonna do scrambled eggs with toast, but um, I love omelets
If it doesn't flip right you can just deconstruct it and make a deconstructed omelet scrambles, there you go
Just as good
Yeah, i'm omelets. I also like like an over easy egg and like the you can like break the yolk with like a piece of bread
And like dip it in it. Yeah, those are good, but I I can't get behind uh, like eggs on burgers or
no, that kind of stuff like like how people put eggs on certain foods like
I don't know. This is not for me. Yeah, I feel like I don't have
I don't really have a preference, but it's not necessary. I'm not. Yeah. Oh, yeah. I love an egg on my burger
Yeah, because a lot of places are doing that now and they're like, oh like
Yeah, like this wake-up burger thing. Yeah, like the way out like a wake-up burger or like, uh,
Breakfast pizzas have you ever had those?
Yes, honestly, they are good. They are good
Yes, it's like a pizza obviously the pizza dough and then it has like eggs and bacon and sausage on it
Interesting breakfast pizza and it was good
Yeah, the ones i've had aren't bad. Yeah. Yeah. Was there like sauce on it? Yeah, you can
But with your eggs, do you guys have any do you guys do hot sauce or ketchup?
Both it depends. I mean if it's the worst the egg quality is
Like then I gotta turn to ketchup if they're really bad egg quality, then i'll put some ketchup on
If they're all right, i'll put hot sauce if they're really good. I'll just put salt pepper. There you go
There's like hard boiled eggs
I haven't had one in a long time, but I like them. I like them put a little salt on top
On a salad too like a cob salad. Oh, yeah, that's good. Yeah
I also like my eggs with cheese sometimes and tomorrow we won't have an episode of off the desk
But tomorrow's national cheese day a good segue. That's a big one. I know favorite kind of cheese
Oh, man, the cheese
I love cheese. I mean literally like
Pepper jack cheese, you can't give me a cheese that I wouldn't eat basically cheddar cheese
fresh mozzarella
All the cheese really good. Um, and then friday again, we probably won't have a new episode of off the desk
It's national donut day. That's a huge one. We know dunkin donuts is gonna be boston cream donut. That's my go-to
so I i'm kind of picky about my donuts I
Either like one with a filling like boston cream or even a jelly donut or the strawberry frosted ones. I really like those
I don't like a lot of the other guys, but I do love the strawberry
I love a butternut donut. My dad likes those. I love them. Yeah, those are good. Those are good
Either that or something chocolate. Yum
yum
well more food talk guys, we're just
Yeah, he's been it's been the food. Yeah a fun filled food week on off the desk
Um, but yeah
I'm sure dunkin donuts usually has a promo deal or something where you can get a donut on national donut day
So look out for that. And uh, yeah lots of exciting things
I guess since you mentioned dunkin we can talk about the bucket. Oh, yes
Yeah, um the 48 ounce so we talked about this back when
Um that dunkin donuts and amhers was one of the trial locations for the 48 ounce
Dunkin bucket and now it's on the menu. You can get it
um, you can do it with
Iced coffee or the refreshers and it's a
Literally a bucket of coffee now. I like coffee a lot, but that's a lot of coffee
Not for me. It's a lot. Yeah, I know you guys are neither. I'm not really big coffee. Yeah, I don't drink coffee
I don't let alone like even if you get like, you know, they have like the color drinks or whatever
Yeah, don't get like you can get those in a big bucket too. Like I would never that's just like too much
Those are very sticky sweet. I've tried a few of them
um
They yeah, they I think starbucks came out with them first and those were a big hit and then duncan started to
experiment with those but they're very sweet you have to I I like it with a
You can do either a tea base or a lemonade base. The lemonade ones are so so sweet. So 48 ounces of that
Would be a lot
I did this story. It was actually after
The trial had ended at the duncan and okay, but I spoke to people at the duncan
well, like customers not actual employees, of course, and they most of the
Insight that I got from the people that I spoke to is that like
Hey, like we love duncan but like this is too much
Like this is not like we are not drinking this we're not doing this. It's unhealthy whatever so
It's kind of interesting that it's made its way back
And it's staying but I guess like it's like
It's part of like a novelty bit to like you get the bucket you get to keep the bucket whatever
Right a lot when it came out during the winter. I mean, I saw a lot with like cloud drivers like
Because they're out plowing all morning like they get the giant bucket and they have coffee for the whole day or whatever
And that was the only circumstance I guess would make sense. But like even drinking that in enough time where it
Would like melt or whatever like if you're drinking it before it melts or whatever like that's way too much coffee in that time frame
Let alone that much
At all for a whole day like that's way too much. It's a lot. It's a lot and the thing is I mean
Can't really it's not like it's shareable because you're drinking
That's kind of gross unless you're like, I don't know you're pouring it out, but that's so messy risk dumping it everywhere
So, I don't know i'm curious
I don't think i'm gonna personally ever get it, but i'll be curious to hear from people who have
um any thoughts on this and
if you've tried it how much you were able to finish and if you would do it again, but
Love duncan love coffee just in smaller
Smaller portions. Yeah smaller portions
Um, all right that takes us to our first break
But we'll be back with a few other things maybe related to summer as we finally head into some uh, very very summer-like weather
All right, welcome back to off the desk on this wednesday morning we're gonna stick with the
Nice weather start of well meteorological summer real but ahead of the start of astronomical summer
Um, we're looking at some summer travel destinations, you know, the summer might be a good time to to do a vacation or take a trip
but um this article that I
Found a few weeks ago, but it still holds up. It's it's ranking the
summer destinations based on price in which ones are maybe more affordable because
Um, you know gas prices alone we've seen it we've seen them and they're high
Yeah, they're high. Um, and that that fuel cost is the same for jet fuel and things like that, too
so, um, you know with higher ticket prices what are
Affordable summer destinations most people or not. I shouldn't say most but there's also been um
Stats out there saying that a lot of people are opting for that staycation this summer
So maybe like you're taking time off of work and you're just hanging out around home and doing things in the area
you know western mass has so many things to offer in the summer, especially so
um, that's something but
Would you guys take a guess on where you think the most affordable average round trip ticket is to in the u.s
Oh, man from from any airport to any airport anywhere. Yeah. Yeah
It's just probably like somewhere in like this just says the 10 cheapest domestic destinations based on the average round trip
economy ticket
New york to fort lauderdale
That's right. Is it really fort lauderdale? Whoa
It's not specific like new york to fort lauderdale, but it ranks fort lauderdale. Okay
It's $269 for the average round trip. Oh, I feel like whenever I go to fort lauderdale. It's not that bad. Yeah
Yeah, yeah
Chris good. Wow, look at that right on the head. Yeah, and then after fort lauderdale came, um, orlando
So that yeah, florida flights
Right atlanta, georgia and tampa. Those are your top four. Um, number five is myrtle beach, south carolina
So that's that's that's cool. Raleigh, north carolina west palm beach, florida, florida all things in the south
Um houston, texas, which would be hotter right? I mean very humid, but that's very hot
Um new york coming in at number nine, which we were saying we're not probably going to fly to new york
But you said that there's direct
Breakup, we were saying that that there are direct flights from raleigh to new york. I would hope it would be direct. We're also
You're gonna go detour back to boston
Yeah, uh, and then number 10 of domestic destinations cheapest domestic destinations was sarasota florida
So if you want to go to florida, you're not necessarily escaping the heat
Go for it. That's awesome
um
It also ranked like the top international value destinations by region
With north america in the caribbean to canada region coming in as the cheapest then central and south america
Then europe then asia africa in the south pacific. So that's by region
But exciting to think about summer travel. Do you guys have any uh trips lined up?
Uh going to greece and july
So looking forward to that and then uh, like small trips in the fall for weekend weddings I got yeah
Like we got one in south carolina
in november
We got one in north carolina in october
Nice, like yeah stuff like that. Awesome. Yeah. Nice
Well, nick, what about you anything? No, greece, unfortunately for me, but um,
I know some lineups, uh to go down the cape for a little bit
Uh, that'll be nice I always love to make my way down there over the summer so nice
And what about you julia? Um, i'm going to nantucket in a few weeks now
I've never been really excited. Yeah, not actually. I don't think i've been either
I've been to martha's vineyard, but not nantucket. I i've never been to i love
Really? Yeah, I know that's pretty wild. I know. Well, we we usually go to new hampshire
I've been to block island. Okay. Yeah. Yeah nantucket. I love nantucket. It's so pretty. Yeah, i'm excited
Yeah, it's always one either as a kid. You're either
Well, if you live in massachusetts, you're going up to new hampshire
You're going down the cape like i've never been to new hampshire on a vacation. Okay, okay
Yeah, i've never been to a beach. Well, maybe i've been to a beach in new hampshire
Like once i've never been to a new hampshire beach. I've been to new hampshire for like a cabin or yeah
Yeah, i've never been to the beach in new hampshire
You know, there's only 18 miles of coastline in new hampshire, but there are some gems there there's some there's some gems
Yes, we usually go up that way. Um, but other than that weekend trips here and there
Where whenever I can get to the beach I try to get there
um
see my friends in new york and philadelphia and
That's why I like living here because you can get to all those places under five hours and you can do that in a weekend
Yes
I've been to the caves since I was a kid. Oh, really? Yeah, it's been a long time
I'm lucky my grandparents have a house down there. So we've been going down there our whole lives. So
Yeah, you're you're right. Like we're kind of like the hub of like you can
Everything we are it's so funny because my friends from new york and new jersey think you know
It's crazy how many miles I can cover in a few weeks or so, but it really is like we just new englanders
We're kind of used to it because you can go and see a different state any week every weekend
If you want to go to the beach, you got it. Yeah, you got the cave got the islands
You got coastal maine and new hampshire. Yeah, you want to go to the mountains you got vermont
Hampshire at the white mountains you got everything it's the best you want cities
boston province
Yeah, you can even shoot right down to new york. It's not difficult and um, yeah, it's really
want a midwestern theme go to uh
The great lakes not too far away
You got canada leave the country
You really want to go somewhere really cool it's kind of far dry but quebec city. Yeah, you've been there. No, I have
So pretty it's going to win the time at christmas
It's like a seven or eight hour drive
Uh probably from here, but like it's really nice. It's like you're in europe. Like everything is french and like
Oh, that's cool. Like the buildings. It's really nice
Cool. Well, yeah lots of things to look forward to as we head into
Summer vacation summer travel season. Uh, we're gonna take a quick break and come back with a game that I think is gonna
Hopefully be fun. So stick around we'll be right back
So
All right, welcome back to off the desk on this wednesday morning
We're gonna do a game that it's funny because kaylee and I when we were
Training for off the desk around this time last year. We did this as a practice episode
And in my mind I was mad that we did it because it was really good
But we never did it again. Um, and it fell around the time of the scripts national spelling bee which wrapped up last week
Um, we don't have too much time to get into details because I want to spell some words, but this article was um from
NBC for washington dc and it has some of the winning words from recent years
I'm gonna play them out loud and we're gonna see if we can spell it. Am I allowed to type it out?
Yeah, sure. You can do whatever you want. Oh, really? I can play it. Yeah. Yeah
Okay, sounds like if I if I can't type it there's no shot i'm gonna be able to spell these words
i'm gonna see if I can
get into my
cerise
Cerise cerise cerise like cerise origin french definition a bright or deep red color
cerise
Okay
I think I have a guess i'm gonna i'm thinking like cerulean is c-e-r
e-e-c-e cerise that sounds
Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well
I'm, definitely i'm starting i'm starting with a c I think I have my spelling
Okay. All right, and i'm not hitting space as i'm typing so it can't tell me that i'm like spelling some words
Okay
Cerise I have c y r e s e. Oh, okay
All right, I have cerise and i'm spelling as if like sir sorry like s i r e c e
All right, are we locking we're locking it in i'm checking the spelling
The correct spelling is o c e r i s e
No, so you were you were probably the closest to the c e r
The ending no. Yeah, and also to clarify this is not the same article that I used last year and I didn't look at the words
so I was wrong anyway, but
All right, here we go we can do another one
abseil
Abseil abseil abs like ab
I heard abseil abseil
Abseil ab I think it's ab abseil
German
The definition is to descend a vertical surface such as a rock face or cliff
Using a rope that is typically secured at the top and controlled by the person descending this feels too easy my spelling
I feel like it's
Like it has well, no, it has like it has to be wrong the way I spelled it. You know what i'm saying?
Like yes. All right. What's your spelling a b s a i l
Abseil i'm gonna say that but i'm gonna add actually hang on i'm gonna say
I'm gonna go that's what i'm saying. My spelling is too easy. Like there's no way i'm gonna go a b
S a i l. Oh, okay. All right, three different answers. We're locking it in
We're all wrong a b s e i l, okay
So I guess my e was in the middle. We're all kind of close
Time for one more but it's gonna be back to kindergarten we go, right?
All right, right
Okay
Here we go
Sucient. Oh, what is that insouciant?
Consuciant insouciant
Showing a casual lack of concern of french origin
Yeah, all right, so we all the same thing we all the same thing
All right, and we're all wrong
What
Why do these words exist that's my you know
It just goes to show that the kids who do the natural spelling. We are absolutely incredible
And very good. They don't even get to write it down
If I didn't get to type it out, I I would not have been able to do it
So major props to all the competitors and you know
I think are uh, well, we we've passed the age requirements long ago
But it's fun to see just you know, how challenging it is and I mean watch I guess we would fail
Are you smarter than a fifth grader? Yes
No, but they have episodes on like
So it's funny
Um, all right. Well that does bring us to the end of off the desk today, but thanks for being with us
No new episodes tomorrow or friday
But you know the drill watch an old one watch another show from the 22 news plus app and we'll be back with new episodes
Next week. We'll see you next time. Bye
