Overstate lines in Connecticut, Attorney General William
Tong announcing General Motors is settling over $220 million
for allegedly selling drivers private data to insurance companies.
Over 10 million Americans, including people in Massachusetts,
having their data illegally sold that monitoring technology,
keeping tabs on the precise locations and driving habits of GM owners
that was given to brokers who sold it again to insurance companies.
Every three seconds,
GM would record your precise geolocation data, and they didn't
really tell anybody about it.
They didn't have the consent of consumers
to collect that geolocation data, and they
certainly didn't have the consent of consumers
and drivers to sell that geolocation data
to insurance companies.
Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell securing $5.7 million
from the settlement.
Drivers could possibly receive direct payments
from ongoing class action lawsuits.
