My friend Eddie has never eaten Mala Spicy Hotpot so after he enjoyed his Taiwanese breakfast so much last week I am sure he will absolutely love this very popular Taiwanese dinner event!
Alan introduces his friend Eddie to a traditional Taiwanese spicy hot pot dinner. The two share a meal featuring a variety of meats and offal, discussing the importance of dipping sauces and the unique textures of the ingredients. Eddie, experiencing mala hot pot for the first time, expresses his enjoyment of the flavors and the adventurous nature of the cuisine.
Oh, we got the disappointing mushrooms.
If that was your mushroom, you'd be right.
I'd be very disappointed in that.
Yes, hello everybody.
Welcome back to the channel.
My name is Alan.
This is my life in Taiwan.
And Eddie is back.
Hi, guys.
I'm back yet again.
Yes, we had a great breakfast the other day.
So I've decided to invite Eddie for a very traditional Taiwanese dinner this time.
So we can drink.
Oh, lovely.
Can't wait.
Have you ever had hot pot before?
I don't think so.
No.
How about a spicy hot pot?
Oh, I certainly haven't had that.
Definitely haven't had that.
Definitely haven't had that at all.
Okay.
So me, Eddie, inside drinking some beers, eating some spicy hot pot.
What more could they ask for?
Let's get to it.
Let's go.
Okay, Eddie, here we are.
Spicy hot pot.
Can you say that?
Spicy hot pot.
Not bad.
And do you know what that means?
No.
Spicy hot pot.
It means spicy hot pot.
Bingo, yeah.
But there's not much else to do other than
get down to ordering some foods for our spicy hot pot.
Sounds good.
I'm starving.
Yeah, let's do it.
Let's eat.
Let's do it.
We've encountered Chinese menu.
So we're going to have to ask a waitress to come help us.
You know how to do that, right?
It's so good.
We are making a YouTube video.
Let's go.
Very helpful.
Awesome.
So a very helpful guy just helped us order.
Did you understand anything that we were ordering?
I did, actually.
Yeah, he said the youtiao.
Okay.
The breadsticks for breakfast.
And anything else that you remember right at the end?
What did I order right at the end?
I wasn't listening.
Sorry.
The most important.
Oh, beer.
I'm going to go with Taiwan style.
Ganbei.
Wengies.
Oh, we got the disappointing mushrooms.
If that was your mushroom, you'd be right.
I'd be very disappointed in that.
Cheers.
What do you think of the spread?
It's a lot.
Anything you recognize or anything you don't recognize?
But there's one very important ingredient we're missing.
What are we missing?
The sauce.
We are going to get criticized in the comments section for our sauce combination
because everybody has their own specific style of doing it.
But the important thing is that you get something that you like.
We have one that we like.
We have one that we like and one bit of a Frankenstein.
So finally, the pot has arrived with our sauce.
The ingredients have arrived.
We've got beer.
We've got our sauce.
It's time to start cooking.
What do you want to put in first?
Oh, that sounds a pork.
We'll get your tongs.
You've got your own tongs.
Usually the younger people will cook for the older people.
But as we're friends.
Yeah, no chance for me.
As we're friends, we can just cook together.
I'll show you how much milk it'll get.
I'm going to go straight for it.
Let's take a bit in both.
What's really important is you don't overcook the meat.
Like you can see that's already done.
Yeah, that was super quick.
What do you think of the smell?
As you come in the door, it just whacks you straight in.
Yeah, exactly.
Let's get a couple of bits each.
Bit of spice.
Cheers.
I think Zhong Lao is the perfect choice.
That is a real spice there.
But it's not overpowering.
It's not overpowering.
It's nice to add a little touch at the end.
Yeah.
Well, now we've tried the spicy one.
We'll go for the milky one.
Yeah, we'll dip it in our sauce.
Oh, yeah.
Let's see if our sauce adds any flavor.
Oh, my God.
That's delicious.
Good, right?
Oh, wow.
Yeah, that one's interesting.
The vinegar and the soy sauce together and the coriander.
I really want to try this one.
Oh, yeah, the fried stuff.
Actually, with the sauce and the spiciness, that's actually 10 out of 10.
That's so delicious.
What do you mean 10 out of 10?
You can't use these normal rating systems, Eddie.
People were so impressed with your...
Lord Luke can eat a shrimp out of 10.
Seems like the world's shittiest car tire.
It's like a squid, octopus kind of thing, I guess.
Oh, that's hot.
Yeah, it's going to be hot.
So be careful.
I'm not going to say too much.
You dig in.
I haven't finished testing, but I will try it.
It's delicious.
It's absolutely delicious.
I should eat this more often.
The texture is just...
The texture is what makes it.
It's a little bit like when we were eating the breakfast, right?
Yeah.
All of the breads and carbohydrates are there to deliver the flavor of the sauce.
Well, all of these meats and the different textures of the meats
are doing the same thing.
Just delivering the flavor of the mala or the sauce we've got.
I have a feeling that was like intestine or something, but like...
You're pretty close.
Penis?
How close is your penis to your intestines?
I've got big intestines and a small penis.
That's...
Oh, you don't speak Chinese?
What's that?
Beef stomach.
Cow's stomach.
Tripe.
I think we would call it tripe in English.
Oh yeah, tripe.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Tripe, yeah.
Oh, with the spring onions in that sauce.
Perfect.
This is why the sauce is so important.
When you eat it just by itself, it's just relatively...
It's nice, but it's...
I'm getting a bit of a...
They are.
A glaze on my tongue.
Like a numbing on my tongue.
Oh yeah, that's probably the spicy in it.
Now, it's not really part of...
It's not something we ordered.
It just comes with the soup.
It looks like someone's ear.
It looks a bit like jelly.
It's a bit jelly-ish, like...
What jelly are you eating?
Brown, weird jelly.
Brown, floppy jelly.
Okay.
Yeah.
Smell it.
How does it smell?
Smells like...
Smells like a curry.
Tastes like someone's ear.
Oh, it just slides down your throat.
What do you think?
It's quite rubbery.
Despite it being rubbery, it wasn't chewy at all.
It's very much like your teeth sort of glided through it
and it sort of floated around your mouth.
And then it just sort of all went down in one easy gulp.
That was blood.
Blood.
Stuck blood.
It was nice.
It was actually...
It wasn't that bad.
Okay, we're going to keep going.
We're going to keep going.
We're going to keep moving.
Next one.
I would love you to try and eat it
and try to identify what you think it is.
All right.
So just based on looks, it looks like a cow's rectum.
You're obsessed with rectums.
Oh yeah, this one doesn't look like a rectum.
Okay.
Cheers.
This is one of my favorite Taiwanese food.
That's weird.
It's good though.
Good for you or bad for you?
Put it down.
I don't know.
Put it down.
What does it remind you of?
What would you compare it to from English food?
The texture of a jelly, but it's quite hard to chew through.
Yeah.
I guess like a candy, a sweet is probably the closest thing.
Yeah, like a jelly sweet kind of thing, but with no sugar.
Yeah.
That was beef tendon.
Who looks at that and says, you know what?
They look at every part of an animal and go,
****, I'm going to eat that.
Anything.
There's not one part of the animal that gets wasted in Taiwan.
Fair enough.
We just make it into sausages.
Yeah, just get the Germans to sort it out.
Oh my Jesus, that's so campy.
We've got lots of other foods to try.
Yeah.
But all of them are pretty simple.
We've got beef and seafood.
But before we fill ourselves up on stuff that we know and stuff that we like,
I've got one more food that I really want you to try.
I guess on first glance, it kind of looks like lemon peels.
Getting some veg with it as well.
Cheeky.
So again, I think this is a food that you've probably never eaten before.
I don't think so.
It looks very unique.
Get some of the sauce with it.
Yeah, why not?
Let's make it as delicious as possible.
Bit of sauce.
Lemon peel, you say?
It looks, I guess this is the closest, but it's like a meaty lemon peel.
I wasn't expecting the crunch to be there.
Yeah, it's got a crunch to it, right?
Yeah, like a very small leg bone.
I think mala hotpot makes everything delicious.
You could put like eyeballs in there and it would be delicious.
But when you mentioned lemon peel.
Yeah.
On my tongue, one side of this, I could feel like a bit of a peel texture.
Texture, yeah.
Because it's like it's been gone a shaver with whatever it is.
I don't know.
You haven't told me what it is yet.
Beef intestines.
Oh, I knew.
I knew at some point there'd be intestines.
I just knew it.
I wouldn't get that if I said it's delicious.
But it's just like, it's...
I think we are so conditioned in England and the West
to eating meat that looks like meat and looks like steak.
I'm not saying it's not delicious because of what it looks like.
I don't really care that it's intestines.
I'm adventurous, I'll eat anything.
As I feel like it's missing its own flavour in and of itself.
I think that's what I feel I'm missing a little bit.
It's own flavour is ----.
But that's the point.
You use the mala or the barbecue or the sauce
or whatever you add to the meat to make it more delicious.
Because to be honest, eating a plain intestine is not going to be great.
I think it's funny too.
Why don't you just use a spoon?
If the hotpot is the sauce, why don't you just use a spoon?
Because then the intestine gets wasted.
You have to use it.
You have to use the intestine.
Oh, that is true.
If you need to use the cow, you'll use the cow.
Yeah, fair enough.
Yeah, that makes sense.
That makes sense, right?
That makes sense.
Yeah, cheers.
Oh, all right.
You're making the move.
I'm making the move.
The pot is still bubbling away.
We've eaten about 90% of the food that was there.
I've gained about 50 kilograms.
We've gained a good few kilos each.
What do you think of your first mala hotpot experience?
It's very lovely.
It's really nice.
I really like the mala sauce.
It's really nice.
And the milk that we got is a really good counterbalance.
When you have like a lot of the spice at once,
the milk really helps to sort of calm it down.
Absolutely perfect.
Stomach was the best one because it really carried that sauce so well.
And the broth, it really carried the flavor.
The one thing Eddie asks of you is go follow him on Instagram.
There's a link right above his head right now.
