Hello everybody and welcome back to episode 2 in my new series where I take a look at
some products that are made right here in the industrious country of Taiwan that are
available to consumers all over the world.
Welcome back to Made in Taiwan Tuesdays.
Yes, Made in Taiwan, a phrase that has now become synonymous with high-tech, cutting-edge,
industry-leading technology products that we all count on and depend on in a world that
is becoming more and more driven by tech on a day-to-day basis.
So you might be asking yourself why in a Made in Taiwan series am I sitting here with a
box from Canon, the Japanese brand, the number one camera brand in the world.
Well, before you start writing and contacting me, let's get up nice and close to that box
where you will quite clearly see that this is a Made in Taiwan product, as will all of
the products featured in this series be.
So what's the deal?
Why is Canon, the world's biggest and most famous camera brand, outsourcing the manufacture
of its parts to other countries, especially when everybody in the world knows and accepts
that Japanese-made camera parts are the best, most reliable, high-quality products?
Why would they risk damaging their brand by allowing some other country's name to be stamped
on their incredibly complex and difficult-to-manufacture products?
Well, for me, the answer is quite simple.
It's trust.
You see, you wouldn't trust your neighbor to wash your big, expensive car if you'd already
seen him washing his with an oily, dirty rag, would you?
No.
And our northern neighbors up in Japan at Canon, they have obviously seen that here
in Taiwan, we are more than capable of the levels of engineering required to produce
high-quality, robust camera lenses worthy of having that world-famous Canon logo stamped
upon them.
And as such, Canon have therefore invested over $15 billion here in Taiwan, opening up
two or three factories over the past couple of decades.
So there you have the reason that this Japanese-branded product, but quite clearly made-in-Taiwan
product, has made it into episode two of my Made in Taiwan series.
Enough talking, let's get it open.
Okay, so here we have it, the Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM wide-angle lens.
Ooh, what a mouthful.
And I actually picked this up on my recent trip back to South Africa.
And if you know anything about the price of lenses, you'll know that I got this at an
absolute bargain, paying just about $5,500 Taiwan dollars for it, which is a steal because
the cheapest I can find it for here in Taiwan is $7,200.
So it was actually cheaper for me to pick it up in South Africa, 9,000 kilometers away
from where it was made.
But anyway, in order to show you the true benefits of this lens, of course, I'm going
to have to put it onto the camera.
So in three, two, one, wow, look at that.
Just look at the amount of scenery we now have filling the frame behind me.
Now unfortunately for you, yes, of course, I'm still sat right in the middle of the frame,
but just look at how much Taiwan we can fit in the frame using this wide-angle 10mm lens.
Amazing.
Yes, the amount of background I can now fit into each frame has almost doubled.
And that's because this lens at 10mm can actually zoom out much wider than this old lens, which
would stop at 18mm.
So this is how I look at 18mm and back to us on 10mm.
Now by no stretch of the imagination am I a camera expert and I can't tell you too many
other details about the lens and I'm sure there are plenty of other channels that can.
But what I do know is that a lower focal length means a wider field of view.
So at 10mm, this is about as wide as we can go.
So for someone like me on a channel like this, where showing off the beauty of Taiwan and
the scenery is of utmost importance, a wide-angle lens such as the one the camera is wearing
right now is absolutely perfect for that.
And let me give you some examples in video and photo of how the two different lenses compare.
So yes, as you can see from those examples, a wider 10mm lens makes much more sense for
a YouTuber such as myself.
And as you can see as I walk and vlog at the same time, much more of Taiwan is in the background
so you get to see exactly how beautiful this country is.
And one more feature that you may or may not be aware of is this lens has image stabilisation
built right into it.
So hopefully much less shaky shots as I'm walking.
All of those features manufactured into the lens right here in Taiwan.
In fact, the camera lens factory is about an hour's drive from me here.
So if Canon are watching and you want to invite me down to see exactly how these lenses are
made, produce a video about it, I'll be up for it.
Canon, let me know.
That's the end of episode 2 of my New Made in Taiwan series.
I hope you enjoyed it.
Sorry if you are a camera techie kind of person and you were hoping for more detailed analysis
of the features of the lens such as aperture, autofocus, that kind of thing.
I'm just not too much into it.
All I care about is how wide this lens can go and how much of beautiful Taiwan can be
fit into each frame.
So at this price point, less than $7,000, this lens for me is the best one available
and the fact it was made in Taiwan just fits perfectly with my channel.
Don't forget if you have any other products that you would like to see featured on this
channel then suggest them in the comments section below.
Anything at all that is produced made here in Taiwan can qualify for a slot on the show.
So don't be shy, let me know below what you think I should be reviewing.
And one more thing before I go.
I want to say a big thank you to my patrons over on Patreon and it's because directly
from their support that I was able to buy this lens and improve the quality of the channel.
Exactly what Patreon is for.

in Taiwan.
