“Off the Desk” is a non-scripted, podcast-style show where morning anchors Kaelee Collins and Julia O’Keefe talk about a range of topics in a more casual setting.
Good Wednesday morning and welcome to Off the Desk on this Weather Wednesday. I'm Julia O'Keefe.
And I'm Chris Bozakis. Good morning. Good morning.
And I'm Nick Antonakis. Good morning. Good morning. Yeah. Happy Weather Wednesday.
It's also one year of Weather Wednesday. Yes. That's pretty wild. Isn't that crazy?
Congrats Chris. Here we are. One year of Weather Wednesdays.
One year of Weather Wednesday. Yeah. Yesterday was the Off the Deskiversary.
It's crazy to think that we've been doing this every day for a year. I know. It's wild.
It is wild. Yeah. We were reminiscing a little bit yesterday on some of our favorite moments on the show.
There's so many because we do this every day.
So looking back it was hard. When Nick asked me it took me a minute.
I'm like there's so many. There's so many. But of course Weather Wednesdays are always a highlight.
Weather Wednesdays are great. And then Weather Wednesdays eventually turned into Chris on Off the Desk every day.
It was fun. It was fun.
But yeah today is a Weather Wednesday and we got some weather to talk about for sure.
It is going to be very hot out there for not just well today it'll be muggy and warm
but it's really tomorrow and Friday that the high heat and humidity really comes in.
We do have a heat advisor that goes into effect tomorrow and Friday
and we'll be dealing with what could feel like the almost near the triple digits.
Between 95 and 100 degrees for Thursday and Friday.
So the heat is on. I mean we've been lucky. We've been dodging a lot of the humidity and the heat.
So we're almost towards the end of early June mid June.
And so now we're getting our first taste of that higher humidity.
But what's crazy is this isn't even technically summer yet.
It's technically not summer.
I mean I feel like does that push our spring average temperatures up?
Like we've been saying you know we're already maybe we already know we didn't have it.
Right. It wasn't like we didn't officially hit the heat wave yet.
We had two out of the three.
Okay. So basically two days before technically.
Yeah. Technically we only had one official one.
But I mean you got very close to two and this one could be at least another two days in the 90s
and maybe we can squeeze out 90 either today or Saturday.
I mean if we were to hit 90 today and we 90 on Saturday I'm pretty sure we'll hit Sunday.
This could be a four or five day heat wave.
But I don't know if it'll be that.
I think Saturday could be a little cooler like upper 80s and today as well.
So it could be two days a break and then 90 degrees on Sunday and then we'll cool things back down.
Either way it's going to feel like we are in the 90s for the next few days.
Yeah. So yeah I hope you got your shorts and T-shirts and tank tops and bathing suits everything.
Yeah. Everything ready.
I know there's cooling centers that are open and splash pads and public pools.
Yeah. All the things and you know the drill.
Make sure you're staying hydrated checking on your elderly neighbors and friends.
Your pets too. Don't leave pets outside.
If you think you're walking on the hot pavement it's hotter for your pets.
Oh yeah.
So maybe just don't take the dog for a walk this week or do it really early in the morning.
Yep. Keep an eye on what you leave in your car.
Yeah.
Within 10 minutes your car can get over 130 degrees.
So when you're talking about temperatures in the 90s.
So keep an eye on that and also with this high humidity there could be a spot shower later this evening
but it's really tomorrow and Friday has the better chance of some pop-up showers or thunderstorms in the evening.
So keep an eye on that.
It's always a possibility when you get really high humidity levels and high heat the atmosphere just gets so unstable.
Right.
So you always have that threat.
So keep an eye on that as well.
Keep an eye on it.
Oh boy.
Stay cool out there.
So another weather Wednesday news.
I saw this online.
I sent it to Chris earlier this week and I said we have to save it for Wednesday.
And you know this conversation has come up before with people you know
maybe they're running into something happening in the room around them or with themselves
that pulls them off the anchor desk or away from the green screen during the middle of the newscast.
That's a question that I get all the time.
It's like well what if something happens?
What would you do?
And I feel like you can't really know until it happens to you.
Yeah it's going to happen.
But this particular meteorologist in Arkansas is now going viral for continuing his weather forecast
as a fire alarm is going off in the studio because one of the studio lights above him caught on fire.
But the kicker here is that it was during a tornado warning.
So you can't even like that is just a perfect storm.
No pun intended.
A perfect storm.
Yeah.
A perfect storm.
No you're right.
I mean it really comes down to your safety or I mean when there's a tornado warning
technically by like federal law have to be on air.
Yeah.
So like.
Wow.
Yeah.
I didn't even factor in the legal aspect of it.
Yeah.
I mean when a tornado warning or something like that you have to be on air like almost right away.
Severe thunderstorm warnings stuff like that.
You know if you want to go on it you can.
But tornado warnings it's like we have to go on air right away pretty much.
And you have to stay on air for the duration of the tornado warning in your coverage area.
So like we had one last year that pretty much tracked from the Berkshires all the way into Worcester County.
So me Adam me and Adam were on air while the whole thing went across.
And then once it went to Worcester it's Boston's market problem.
So we can go on.
Yeah.
So we can go off air then.
And technically the Berkshires are Albany market but it is Western Mass.
So we do keep an eye on that too.
But I can't imagine what I would do.
I mean.
Yeah.
In the back of your mind you know you have to be on air but it's like there's a fire like I don't know.
What if it spreads to the screen.
I know.
That's like that's it.
This one didn't.
It was a light on and a producer came over with a fire extinguisher and was able to put it out.
So you know staying on air anyway.
But then so you could safely stay on air.
And it looks like at one point you can see the smoke.
But then in the report I just looked at they clarified that that was residue from the fire extinguisher.
So he was safe but he maintained such composure and professionalism and stayed on there.
Yeah.
In a situation like that everyone's tuned into your news looking out for their safety.
So you're in charge of the entire area's safety to make sure that everyone's understanding what they have to do in a tornado threat situation.
Yep.
A lot to that.
Another one too.
It's tornadoes and flash floods.
Flash floods.
OK.
The National Weather Service is a government agency.
So anything that they push like even today the heat wave or the heat advisory like we have to show that.
Like we have.
Yeah.
You have to show all their watches and warnings or advisories.
People got to know.
They got it.
Yeah.
To keep everybody safe for sure.
So yeah that was something that was going viral.
You may have seen it online.
Yeah.
Something.
I'm sure you can find the video online.
It's very accessible.
I know.
I couldn't show it because it wasn't with our.
It wasn't with the next star station.
Or NBC.
Yeah.
So you can find it.
You can find it online.
So yeah.
That's that.
Today is June 10th.
It's National Ice Tea Day which feels big for the heat today.
Nick and I had a little summer this or that debate yesterday and we asked the question
lemonade or iced tea.
Do you have a preference?
If I had to pick one of the two.
I mean they're both really good.
But I'd go for a cold glass of lemonade.
But I am the guy that mixes them.
That's what I said.
I usually don't do one of either or.
I usually do half iced tea half lemonade.
Classic.
Yeah.
I'm with you on that.
It's also National Ballpoint Pen Day.
I thought that was a fun one.
I don't know about you guys but I have a very specific type of pen that I like to write
with.
Granted.
I mean actually I take notes for off the desk.
I'm not writing as much but especially when I would take notes with a pen and paper it
has to be a very nice gel.
The G2 pens in particular.
It's a nice.
It's very.
Yeah.
It's a good pen.
It's very easy.
Yeah.
Anyway.
I'm particular about my pen.
So.
I can get it.
I really appreciate a smooth writing pen.
Honestly.
A pen.
A pen is a pen.
But of course.
I mean nothing can top 22's pen.
Oh yeah.
And it has a stylus too.
Yeah.
You can even touch your phone with it.
Yeah.
What else do we have for this vlog today?
That might be kind of it.
I guess looking back at the one year of off the desk since I shared some of my favorite
Yeah Chris.
Do you have a favorite weather Wednesday moments?
I'd hate to put you on the spot.
Some of my favorite moments.
Definitely Kaylee's pregnancy announcement stands out.
Yeah.
There's been stuff that has happened off camera too.
The spider?
I forgot about the spider.
That has to be my highlight.
The spider.
It was more of a low light.
I was sitting in your seat one day Nick and I was talking and a spider.
I didn't see it at first but you could see it on the camera.
Came crawling up the back of the microphone.
And then like I was sitting here talking.
I looked down and it's sitting right on top of the microphone and I freaked out.
I like backed up and yeah.
I thought something was happening.
I thought Chris was like hurt or something was going on.
My face is so concerned.
Paper airplanes were good too.
Oh paper airplanes.
That was a good moment.
That was fun too.
That was fun.
We did leave a spider clip in there.
I was going to say.
Did you?
It's there.
I should clip that separately and post it on YouTube.
You should.
Spider.
Spider attack.
It would go viral.
I don't know.
It was pretty funny.
Yeah.
It was funny.
I don't know.
Obviously my water slide on here was fun.
The Halloween pictures were fun.
Halloween pictures.
Yeah.
There's some good moments.
It's been fun and there's so much more to come.
And it's crazy to look back and think of how much the plus app itself has grown.
I mean off the desk was the first of now seven shows that are on our digital channel.
And everyone has really taken it by storm and really taking advantage of the room to put some content out there.
Can't forget our great surprises with our general manager Bob.
Love the Bob surprises.
Of course.
When he brings us like free food sometimes.
Or mugs.
Mugs.
Yep.
Oh and debuting our legacy promo.
He came on and we showed that.
That was fun.
Oh nice.
For the Super Bowl right?
Yes.
Yeah.
There's so much.
All right.
We're going to take a quick break and then we'll come right back with a few more things
trending.
All right.
Welcome back to Off the Desk on this weather Wednesday.
Thanks for being with us.
Some more station news and Nexstar Media Group news because we won't have an episode on Friday.
We definitely wanted to talk about this.
I think last year we did the episode in our Founders Day t-shirts.
But we won't have a new episode Friday so we're going to say it today.
Nexstar's Founders Day of Caring.
Nexstar Media Group is 22 News' parent company.
And the day is a charity, not charity wide, station wide, Nexstar wide charity initiative
to give back to the community.
So all day on Friday stations all across the country will be doing a community service project.
So we're excited for that.
Here at 22 News we'll be making sandwiches.
That's exciting.
Yeah for local charities.
Nick this will be your first Founders Day of Caring so that's exciting.
I'm looking forward to it.
Yeah it'll be great.
Yeah and the sandwiches are going to be going to Providence Ministries,
the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts and Rachel's Table.
So we'll have more about that on Friday.
I think we made over a thousand sandwiches last year.
Yeah.
Oh wow.
I think they say that they wanted to make 1,022 to be 22 News.
But we always make way more than that.
Way more than that.
People are in the Mass Appeal studio all day.
All day.
Yeah I've done that since I started.
Yeah so it's a lot of fun.
I mean everyone gets together and you just make sandwiches and have a good time.
And the evening crew does it as well.
So yeah pretty much from tomorrow morning through tomorrow evening.
Pretty much the whole work day people are in there making sandwiches.
Yeah.
It's nice.
It's great.
And it's great because these are organizations that you know we cover a lot
and we do a lot of stories with them throughout the year too.
So you know to help them in more ways than one by really partnering with them
to give back to their mission as well is really important.
And it all goes back to it's locally.
It goes back to the people in our area who need it.
So it's a great cause.
Yeah.
So we'll come at you with more about that on Friday.
Nick I'm guessing you're going to be live for us giving us a live look in the
Mass Appeal studio as Nick.
And I bet we'll be live in the morning too probably.
Probably yeah.
We'll probably show show the studio and say that we're getting ready for it
in honor of you know the station's founding and then this media company
wide community service day.
So it's lots of fun.
Awesome.
All right.
Something else on the horizon at the end of this week which we won't be able
to talk about when it actually is happening but the World Cup is coming.
It's coming.
Yeah.
So we've been covering Boston Stadium getting ready to host the games the
matches in our state and the whole country the whole continent really.
Yeah.
Getting ready as people from all over the world come on in.
Yeah.
It's going to be pretty wild.
The whole world will be watching like our area.
It is.
Massachusetts is hosting some of the World Cup.
It's crazy.
So who is our first team.
Who is the first team.
I think it's Paraguay in L.A.
The U.S. versus Paraguay in L.A.
It's interesting though I was reading this morning about ticket sales and the
way they did it was each country was able to sell 8 percent of the stadium that
they were playing at or something like that.
But they're saying now that the U.S. and Canada there's still a lot of tickets
left for the first games the first home games.
And the only country that sold out Mexico was the only stadium that sold out
the first game.
It's it goes to show you that.
Yeah.
It's so expensive.
It's very expensive.
I mean and you have like people with a lot of money like celebrities even saying
that they wouldn't pay the ticket prices that these are going for like.
Yeah.
The L.A. ticket prices went from the cheapest being one thousand one hundred
twenty dollars ranging from that to over twenty seven hundred dollars.
And I'm sure it's fair.
Yeah.
I'm sure if you pick you know low seats or a box seat or any special thing like
that it's going to be way more.
Yeah.
I mean look at the NBA finals.
They're going to 100 grand for courtside seats.
Crazy.
Like nuts and fans even supposed to watch.
It's just like a celebrity event basically.
Yeah.
It's not enough.
Those bleed seats are like five six thousand dollars.
So I can't imagine what like close to the field for the World Cup especially
come the end of the World Cup.
You know the championship round and stuff like what that would be.
Oh yeah.
I mean it's not even like.
Never mind the final.
I'm sure we'll see those prices skyrocketing more.
But it is good for businesses around the area.
We've talked about in the news.
Governor Healy in the Massachusetts.
The state has passed legislation where cities and towns can decide if they want
to extend their last call hours till 3 a.m.
instead of the 2 a.m.
was.
But again that's up to cities and towns.
So we haven't confirmed in our area.
If any places have decided to do that.
Probably more of an eastern mass thing especially in Foxborough.
You know watch parties and things like that.
But it's good for people who want to go to those watch parties and watch the
game out and also for you know local businesses in general.
It's going to last through July 31st.
So those hours extend the month of July.
But yeah that'll be interesting to see who decides to take advantage of that
opportunity.
And it's going to be packed.
I mean we're already talking about it this morning.
You know driving.
For the next few the next few weeks is going to be.
It's going to be tough.
There's going to be traffic.
You know they've been preparing this for a long time and hopefully we're
quick to do it.
I know MBTA has extended its schedules to try to get people to utilize public
transport instead of driving.
So hopefully that'll relieve some of the congestion on the roads.
But it'll be interesting to see.
It's an exciting time for sure.
You guys will you watch the games.
Oh yeah.
Yeah.
I'll be watching.
I don't know if I'll catch everyone but I'll try.
If I'm free and it's on TV I'll definitely put it on.
Same here.
I'm in the same boat.
Yeah.
I'm probably going to go out with friends to watch the game on Friday.
It's at nine.
Yeah.
Same here.
That's what I'm saying.
But then it's a matter of where and how long are we going to have to wait.
So I'll try to navigate that one.
But looking forward to watch the USA game.
My family's soccer family.
So it'll probably be on my house all day every day.
Stadium in L.A. are they playing.
I think it's so far so far.
Pretty sure.
Yeah.
I think so.
Bye.
So yeah.
I'll watch whenever you know whatever's on.
I like the USA games obviously.
It'll be fun to watch.
So everyone's rallying behind our team.
We'll see.
Hopefully they do well.
You know.
You never know.
Yeah.
It'll be a fun time.
English roast.
Fun time.
All right.
We're going to take another quick break and then maybe come back with some trending movie
news.
Nick and I talked about this a little bit yesterday but there's been even more developments with
Toy Story 5.
Oh.
So stick with us and we'll be right back.
All right.
Welcome back to these last few minutes of Off The Desk on this weather Wednesday.
We're gearing up for the heat.
Yep.
We're gearing up for the World Cup.
Yeah.
Lots of things.
We're also gearing up for Toy Story 5.
Yeah.
There's a lot.
So much happening.
So much.
Um.
Yeah.
We talked about this a little yesterday too.
Toy Story 5 is premiering June 19th.
And the world premiere was held last night in L.A.
I saw a clip today of Taylor Swift singing You Got A Friend With Me with Randy Newman
live at the premiere.
So they.
Yeah.
She surprised everybody at the premiere.
She also has a song in which came out last week.
I don't know if you guys listened.
Haven't heard it.
No.
That's okay.
Pretty good.
It's good.
It's nostalgic.
It captures that.
Yeah.
Nostalgia.
You know.
The old Toy Stories.
Um.
But it's crazy.
You know.
The evolution of that franchise in particular.
That was my favorite movie as a kid.
Um.
And now.
They're still going.
And we're adults.
So.
Do you guys plan to see it?
I want to watch it.
For sure.
I feel like I gotta watch 4 first.
It's like what we were saying yesterday.
That too.
Yeah.
I haven't.
I haven't watched 4 either.
I haven't seen Toy Story in such a long time.
I feel like I need to just rewatch the whole album.
I mean.
I know.
I know the storyline.
I know the characters.
But I'm like.
I don't know.
Maybe just to refresh your mind on how everything goes.
Yeah.
I haven't seen 4 either.
So.
Yeah.
I forget.
I guess I just never got around to seeing 4.
I don't remember exactly when it came out.
I think it was when I was 12.
Is this supposed to be.
Like Andy's all grown up now.
Or like.
What's like the spin on this?
I thought Andy grew up in Toy Story 3.
Yeah.
What the heck happened in 4?
Yeah.
What's going on in 4 and 5?
So.
This doesn't help that none of us have seen 4.
I know.
But in 5.
I do know that the toys are going to come face to face with technology.
Yeah.
The tablet.
So.
I do like this story.
But where are they?
I know Woody is like balding.
That's.
That's like the one thing I've seen.
It's like he takes off his hat.
And then it shines like off the light or whatever.
That's such a good touch.
It just shows.
Yeah.
The wear over time.
Wear and tear on the toys.
So.
At the end of 3.
Remember he gave the toys to Bonnie.
Before he gave them to Woody.
Yeah.
But.
I don't.
Like.
So.
Are they still with her?
That's what we don't know.
But I mean.
That was like.
When did Toy Story 3 come out?
Oh yeah.
It was 16 years ago.
So.
Like.
Either they just didn't do a time skip with real time or something.
Or they went to a new owner in Toy Story 4.
Who knows?
Maybe Andy has kids now.
Who knows?
Yeah.
We have time for me to look this up.
Last movie I saw.
He was leaving for college.
And that was 16 years ago.
Right.
So.
That means that he's like in his 30s now.
So.
Maybe he's got a family.
And the toys are with him.
It could be his kids now.
Yeah.
Okay.
So.
In Toy Story 4.
They are still at Bonnie's house.
That's where they live.
Okay.
And it's also where Bonnie meets Forky.
Forky's the only one that.
That.
When I.
Oh.
I forgot about Toy Story 4.
But.
Okay.
Let's see.
Oh.
And the plot line is.
Okay.
They go on a road trip.
So they're still with Bonnie.
They go on a family vacation.
The toys travel in an RV.
Forky tries to escape the trash.
Okay.
So.
Forky's in the trash.
So.
Okay.
So.
They're with Bonnie.
Um.
What about now?
Alright.
When did Toy Story 4 come out?
Um.
I think I can only ask one question at a time.
I know.
Sorry.
It happens too much every once.
Clearly we had knowledge gaps about Toy Story.
Um.
Where are the toys in Toy Story 5?
Let's see.
Okay.
Um.
Google is searching.
Okay.
They're still at Bonnie's.
So Bonnie's just a kid forever.
Yes.
Oh yeah.
Cause.
Yeah.
Okay.
They're still at Bonnie's.
And.
They're in the tablets domain.
The tech world.
So.
They're gonna have to be navigating that.
Um.
Wow.
And it looks like there's gonna be a rescue mission involved.
So.
I don't know.
We'll have to see what happens.
But I like.
I like the introduction of technology.
It's so funny.
Cause I.
You know.
Looking back on.
Kids now.
Versus the technology that.
You know.
We were playing with.
When.
First Toy Story was so popular.
I'm thinking of like.
The Leap Pad.
Oh yeah.
Oh my god.
That's what the tablet reminds me of.
Yeah.
Movie.
The Leap Pad.
The.
The Leap.
The.
Yeah.
The.
It wasn't even like a tablet though.
It was still like.
A funky.
Yeah.
It was like a funky thing.
Game boy.
Um.
So there's gonna be talking tablets.
There's gonna be.
Oh yeah.
Nintendo DS.
The full tablets.
Um.
Which is cool.
Because you know.
I mean I'd like to think that.
I wonder if they're gonna get along.
That's the thing.
There's gonna be some kind of clash.
I don't think they are.
Toys and.
The tablet looks evil.
Based off the promotion.
Cardboard thing.
I saw in the movie theater last week.
Or two weeks ago.
I don't know how long ago it was.
I think that.
I'm pretty sure the tablet's evil.
I kind of.
I mean it is.
If it's from the toys perspective.
It is.
It has to be.
Because the kids are favoring.
Electronics.
Um.
But I think you know.
It's a big statement.
About where we are in society.
And you know.
You see.
Kids defaulting to the iPad.
For play time nowadays.
And it's one of those things.
Where.
I was playing with.
You know.
The toy.
We didn't have those.
Yeah.
And things are really different now.
And.
I was playing with.
My Toy Story.
Figures.
Oh yeah.
Woody and Bugs.
Yeah.
One of those things that.
It's just something that.
You know.
As the digital world progresses.
That parents and kids are navigating.
So it's very real.
And it keeps it with the times.
Even if maybe the ages.
Don't.
Patch up necessarily.
But.
It'll be interesting to see.
For sure.
Yeah.
Do you think that there will be more?
More.
Toy Stories?
I think this is probably.
I feel like.
I feel like five is a good number to close on.
Yeah.
It is.
And especially.
It's a.
Relevant social issue.
With technology.
Yeah.
Things like that.
Cause if you push the six.
Then I feel like you have to.
Like just keep going.
To like.
Yeah.
Cause then it's just.
I don't know.
Five is a good.
Ending point.
When do we start to call them volumes?
Right?
Yeah.
Volumes.
We're on volume five.
But yeah.
So we'll.
We'll have to wait.
Another week or so.
To be able to watch it.
But thanks for joining us.
On Off The Desk today.
No new episodes again.
Tomorrow or Friday.
But we'll be.
We'll be back on.
Actually we won't.
Because I'm on vacation next week.
Oh yeah.
So we won't be back.
We're not going to be back.
For a minute.
Until the following Monday.
See you next year.
We'll see.
At this point.
Yeah.
We'll be back on.
Check out other shows.
On the 22nd.
Plus app.
June 22nd.
Mark your calendars.
Wow.
All right.
Well Julia deserves a vacation.
Everybody.
Come on.
We got to give her the time.
Enjoy the weather blast.
Yes.
That'll be in our time slot.
But there's so much to check out.
On the app.
Definitely.
Echo Plus is back.
Check out their shows.
Simba Cinema.

Weather Blast.
Patrick Show.
All the things.
All right.
Well.
We'll see you.
Sometime.
In a couple weeks.
Have a good one.
