Good morning everybody. It is day two of the Mount Everest Redemption Arc. We are out here in the
mountains of Washington state. We're going to be climbing the Tooth which is an absolutely
beautiful peak. It's one of the oldest climbing routes in all of Washington,
maybe even America. So it's going to be pretty sweet to kind of be on history today. But our
objective is all the way over here, the Tooth. It's such a cool feature. I can't wait till we
can see it. But right now it's kind of hidden behind all of this. But we have Jack here. Now
the only thing we got to know, Jack, is have you beaten Minecraft before?
Uh, not without cheating. Creative mode? Yeah, keep inventory. You know what?
Better than most people. So I already had a pair of these.
Alrighty, we are leaving the trailhead. We got all of our gear, I think. But this is where the
trail begins. Very nice. We got a little bit of snow coverage. We're being bold today. We are just
going with trail shoes. Usually since there's snow you could skin or use snow shoes, but
we're going to try to be extra efficient. Our journey today starts in the trees, where we're
going to work up higher and higher until we reach the base of the route. From here, we're going to
have four pitches of exposed alpine climbing until we reach the summit of the Tooth. We got a nice
waterfall here. Very beautiful obstacle. Come on, send it. Someone put this in a...
Oh, beauty. We're really out here. Feels good. Alright, we're about like 30 minutes
onto the trail here, and we got probably the most panoramic view you get until you get higher up in
the mountains. But we can actually see our objective now. So we're going to continue working
through these trees for a bit, come out into this big basin open area, and then right there, that
little nub is the Tooth, which is where we're going to work up to and begin to climb.
Alright, we are currently off the normal trail. Obviously, there's still a nice boot pack because
a lot of climbers come through here. But now, how did it get so big, man? Look at that Tooth.
It looked like a little nub before, but now it's huge.
Icy snow. Oh, now we're in the sun. We're going to start baking. We're going to shed a layer,
put sunscreen on for mom. She would want that. And the wife keeps yelling at me.
My skin cancer probability has probably gone up after Everest.
Because you're so much higher up. Yeah. So my skin needs... Dude, that's insane. You're
actually high up enough that the UV is worse. It is. That's crazy. There's literally UV radiation.
Alrighty, back on the move into the sun terrain. We got our sunscreen on, got a little bit of water,
shed a layer, and now we are ready to go link up with SpongeBob.
So now, we were off of the main trail, and we're officially in mountain terrain. From here,
we're going to work up through the trees until we get to Pineapple Pass.
That's the name of the location. That's why I made the joke, you see. After Pineapple Pass,
it'll just be a little longer until we get to the base of the tooth.
Look at my hands still from Everest. They're still not healed yet. It looks so ugly.
Wow, we got some running water here. All the way up in the mountains, just in April.
And another way you know it is spring and getting very warm. We got a huge wet loose slide here.
You also got a lot over here. One way to identify these is, as you can see these tracks,
it kind of opens up like a triangle. So they usually start from a smaller point and get bigger
as the slope goes down. It's pretty okay to stand here right now because it's not actually
warmed up yet. So nothing else would really come down. But as the day goes on, we might even see
some shedding going on and some roller balls indicating that the snow is getting a little
bit more unstable. So that's why we started super early this morning, so we could mitigate that risk.
I only fear two things in this world, talking to girls and avalanches. We can really see our route.
We're a little bit high up right now, so we kind of got to work down. But you can see Pineapple
Pass right here actually, and the tooth right on the right. But our positioning is not looking that
good right now. Yeah, I agree. I think we were yapping too much. I think the bootpack might have been like up there.
Basically we were following dog tracks. All trails, what the heck? All trails, where did you bring us?
Yo, that was clean bro. How do you do that?
How are you doing that to my friend? Bro, you just run it.
It's at this like intermediate phase where it's not soft enough to
help you stick. Oh, so icy. Yeah, but it's like just getting slick. No way.
Holy aura farm. Just copying the beta.
Let's go. All right, we made it back into the trees, out of the sun, moving up towards Pineapple Pass.
But because we're back in the shade, the snow is a lot more hard, which is good. We don't want to be
post-holing because it's annoying. But Jack's going to throw on his snowshoes. I'm throwing on my
microspikes. Yeah. Bro is stunting on me in his snowshoes. Bro, chill. Don't just go up the steepest
route. Ice axe in hand. This is true mountaineering. Look at that exposure.
So we're going to get to the top of this and it should open up to the actual Pineapple Pass area.
We found a booter actually, which is epic. We can follow someone else's tracks. There's more
like paw tracks right here. I wonder if it's from Mountain Lion or someone actually brought their dog
because there's tracks right here and there's prints. All right, so we have a little obstacle
here. We got some water runoff here. Another danger to worry about when you are in spring season is
terrain traps like this, where there might be hollow water underneath that. It's still shaded,
so the snow should actually be pretty good there. But it looks pretty thick still, so
you wouldn't fall through it. But if there was less snow, it definitely would be something to
worry about. Oh yeah, that's solid. Microspikes only. It's got really kicking steps. All righty,
here we are. We're about to come up over this little ridge here and then we're going to see
Pineapple Pass and more of the tooth. I got eyes. But now we got the tooth right in front of us.
Looking like a tooth for sure. We've already put a sponge bob though. Yeah, where is he?
Absolute scam. Mountain Project said he'd be here. Yeah, we're gonna move up through this pass here
and get up to the base of the route. It's very nice in here because the sun isn't shining too
hard. Really easy terrain to work on. After a couple hours of ascent, we had made it to Pineapple
Pass. From here, we're just going to have a little bit more elevation and mileage to go
until we reach the base of the tooth and begin climbing to the summit. The views are getting
pretty of all of Washington. All right, we have come up this huge flat section here and now we
are at the final last bit of elevation before I think we get to the base of the route. We are
literally right underneath the tooth right now. I was telling Jack it's just an insane feature.
Just shooting up out of the earth. According to him, he read that it is volcanic. We're just going
work up to here, which is the official Pineapple Pass. Then, I think we're going to take a ride
into here. The south face is obviously shooting up this left side here. Coming up. Look at this.
Getting a little bit steep up to the pass here. Final slog. Boot pack right here the rest of the
way. Looks like maybe some climbers came through here recently. It looks like we got the routes
ourselves today. Coming up the gully all the way out of the pass now and now we got this opening.
We're about to see what's on the other side. This is actual adventure mode. We'll see what's in here.
Yeah, the slog is over. We just have to find our way to the base of the route,
but we're at the elevation. It's super steep and whack in here,
but it looks like we just moved through. Got some scrambling up to the base of the route. Sweet.
Here we are. Look at this. This is the south face of the tooth right here. This is where
we're going to start roping up and everything and get the gear out and just have a good time
in the mountains. Look at this. Let's go, dude. Let's go. Now that we have made it to the base
of the routes, it's time to get climbing. This right here is the south face of the tooth, which
is the route we'll be ascending today. It has about 350 feet of climbing split across four
different pitches. And because I haven't rock climbed in about three months, I was really going
to need to ease into it. Helmet's on for mom. All right. We're going north face on. We're shooting
on 4K and the new GoPro Mission One Pro. Shoots up to 8K. Cameraman never dies. All right. Now
we're going to get up to the start there. Set up a little belay station. Jack's going to lead the
first pitch. Dang, bro. Try a little hard. Jeez. You could have just went there. You could have just
went there. I'll do the same. We got to get in the sandy mindset. Sandy mindset.
Oh, my hands. They don't like the rock. Rock is nice and toasty too. Yeah.
In the sun. It's a good day to be out here. It is. That's where we were coming up. We're
on a nice ledge here so I can give Jack a belay. Of course, we have the creeper chalk bag.
Dude, you're just climbing alpine. Bluebird day of rain year. This is peak, peak existence.
Moving clean with it. Come on. All righty, here we go. First climb of the day.
This is a pretty fun route. Gets pretty exposed. It's very classic, but it's perfect for just
working on alpine skills, rappelling, doing everything safely, being able to check your
systems. It's super nice. Nobody else is out here either throughout this whole thing.
Here, we have Jack's first piece of protection. He shoved this little ... These are one of his.
He shoved this into the rock. It's really secure, even though it looks really small and
fragile. Once he places this, it connects into the rope. If he were to fall, he wouldn't go
all the way down there. He'd only go to this piece, assuming it stays in the rock. We got
another one. This one was actually here before we got here. He said this was his carabiner,
so I'm going to snag that. Look at this thing, dude. Just a random can that's straight up stuck
in this rock. It's probably been in there for years. Oh, yes. Good crack here.
This is good. Good warmup. Gnarly. Oh, this is a little sketch.
Got some actual choss in here. Sheesh. Sick. First few moves. Looks like it evens out a little bit
here and a little steep. Then you get to the anchor. That was definitely the hardest part
of the first pitch. It was sick. I see you. I see you, my friend. Heck, yes. That was a good
section, but a little tricky there. Yes, the beginning and that little section right there
Dude, let's go. Nice lead. Good job. Good stuff.
It's like one of those cramps that just doesn't stop. Where? On my quad. Yes.
No way you're fighting that many demons. The other side of the quad is cramping now. No way.
No way. Brutal, bro. Fighting straight demons. This is all here. This whole thing. Oh my gosh,
bro. Oh, it's one of those ones that doesn't stop. Bro, it's dead. Basically, this thing,
very secure. It's literally slung around several massive boulders. This knot will make sure we're
tied in. Now we can't go anywhere. We can wait this as much as we want. We're being chilling.
We are at this nice ledge now, properly secured. I'm sure you go up this to the left and then you
got that crack. Yes. We're going to be in the trees, bro. We're not even in the alpine. What
the freak? Who put trees up here? I don't know. Notch? This climb is a grueling one. Hope to find
some free cams in the crash. All right. No, that's good. Nice. Now we've just placed one of
these. We're going to extend this with these alpine draws. Now if I fall, I'm only going to
fall to this thing, assuming it holds me. Okay. This is a fun move, actually.
That sounds mega scuffed. Oh, there's a better jug right beneath it. All right. No fall mindset.
Straight up through this weakness here. This is epic. This face.
All right. Definitely get some pro in soon. We got a good crack system here,
considering we're about to get exposed. Oh, perfect. Yeah. Let's get something in. This
is a nut right here. It's like a little piece of metal that you stick into the crack and then
they're actually pretty bomber if you can get good ones in. Oh yeah. Okay.
It's not even noon. Let's go. All right. Bam. It's got a piece. This is like,
yeah, this is some exposure here. This is actually pretty gnar. Okay. All right. Dial in
here. Maybe some jugs. Yeah. Great calms, bro. Dude, just walking the edge here. This is sick.
Good jokes. That was epic. You'll like that. Nice. There we go. All right. Now we are protected.
That last section was pretty exposed. I have the option of going to the left here,
or I can go straight up this crack. No, I'm going to go right side.
It's actually kind of cool. It's like a slab. Oh money. This crack here feels pretty good.
Oh, look at this tree. That thing looks so funny. A little tricky actually. Yeah. Get up a little
higher. That was good. All right. Nice. Perfect. Dang. What a gnarly pitch. Really cool,
steep pitch there. We're just at the top about to get to the anchor. And then right here,
we have our anchor that we're going to be belaying Jack up from. We've got a nice master point. This
pretty bummer. Which one's better here? This red one looks nicer. All right. Now we are secured,
locked in, and I'm going to let him know that he can take me off belay. And then using the rope,
we're going to pull him up all the way up what we came up. He'll be nice and safe with the rope.
Obviously you always want to check your systems first. So if you were to fall, sudden tug,
device locks. Very nice. Obviously breakhand on it at all times. So we're good. Locked.
So now what we're doing is we're just pulling all the rope up that's the slack he creates by
climbing. So there's never slack in the system to where he can actually fall far. Let's go.
Good lead. Thanks. Really fun. Dude, that was a sick one actually. Those little exposed sections
are really good. This tree is so dying. It's good now, but it's probably dated. We actually
got a little bit of snow and it's mostly third and fourth class. And then we think it ends up there,
but Jack's going to take it and it's going to be a bit of a scramble for sure, but it'll be
pretty sweet. So we should be able to move fairly fast through it. Oh, you're going to get soggy
feet. No, not the soggy feet. Do I really have to go? Maybe you can parkour. Brutal. All right.
Jack has just pulled up all the slack. So we're going to start climbing in a second. The only
thing I wish I had done differently. So like a mistake, I guess was this big stump here. It is
like pretty bomber, but it isn't that good. And it's a little bit sus and it's the, I only use
this tether or cord that's wrapped around it as our anchor. It would have been really nice if I
had backed it up with something else. Pretty good, but this tree is going to give one day.
And you don't want to be the person that ends up being super unlucky. Fourth, third class
scramble time. Let's get through this kind of fast. Fun coming through here. Hello tree.
I love trees so much. Oh yeah. This is a not a third class.
These moves right here. This is kind of exposed. Holy bomber cam here, bro.
What? No, I can't get the micro cam out. Oh no. No, I got it. Don't worry.
Like bro, I'd put my whole bloodline on this thing. All right. We just spent the last literal 15
minutes trying to get that cam out and we finally did it. It was slotted in this crack. Absolutely
brutal. That's why you go fast on the other pitches. Yeah, true. All right. Third pitch
complete. Now we're going to the last pitch. It's the money pitch. You got what we, what's called
the catwalk. Yeah. This route is pretty cool. We're going to go left here, then come up here.
It's going to be super cool and exposed. You can go straight up here, but not as fun,
not as epic, not as dank. All right. Have fun. Exposed epic pitch incoming.
Oh, I can totally see that. Moving out to the left here. So cool. The catwalk.
Run out, run out. The green boy hasn't been used yet. Getting that variety. Going in
for the catwalk. We'll definitely get more in. Now we're on belay. Now you have a purpose.
Just kidding. You're always full of purpose, Jack. Holy five, four. Dang. You're right.
It does say delayed pro, huh? Gnar. This is sick. Such a good climb though. Dude, what if this is
actually run out of. Yeah. I'm wondering if there's like, I'm actually going to like,
yeah, you're right. It is like a good, good like holds and stuff. Yeah. Nice.
Nah, this is sick. The catwalk, bro. Holy run out. This got me freaking out.
Yeah. Yeah, it is. Easy pro. Easy pro. We take those. Oh, come on. I want to be safe.
I want to be safe again. All right. We're safe. We're safe.
Absolutely sick. Catwalk there. Super exposed. Not too much pro. Very fun. That's what we're
looking forward to. Now we're going to continue walking out through here.
Kind of scramble up this and we should be at the summit soon, but this is insane.
Beautiful up here. So close to lunch. Continue. All right. Now I feel safe. So,
oh, new realm, new area of the map. Oh my goodness. I see the summit. It's, it's within reach.
Oh, dang. What an epic summit and some ledges up here.
Boom. All right. Before we celebrate the summit, let's get Jack up here nice and safely.
Dude, that was sick. Let's go. Bam. Made it up all four pitches and now we are at
the little summit. Look at this. Sheesh. What a sick spot. Rainier looking absolutely huge.
Dang. Summit victory snacks. Now we are going to repel down. I'm going to make sure to really
take our time. Be nice and safe. One, two, three. Let's go, bro. Oh, you got exposure.
Exposure. All right. We're committed. Dang. Let's go, dude. Bro is stemming.
Hold up. Oh, it's so wet. Yeah, I know it's going to be trench foot territory, but we did it.
We got down all the repels. Let's go. Now watch this dry. No way. No way, bro. That's,
that's a mega, mega sand. Oh my gosh. Fourth gear.
Too fast. After hours of trench foot later, we have made it back to the parking lot. Anyway,
that is going to do it for day two of the Mount Everest redemption arc. What an amazing day.
A lot of time spent up in the Alpine today. Good cardio, good training. So thank you all
for watching. I'll see you in the next one.
