Oh say can you see
By the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed
At the twilight's last gleaming
Whose broad stripes and bright stars
Through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watched
Were so gallantly streaming
And the rocket's red glare
Gave proof through the night
That our flag was still there
Oh say does that star-spangled
Banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free
And the home of the brave

and in this community, serving on the board and giving back,
we really, again, put Boston Chinatown on the map.
One way after another, one organization after another,
one cause after another, so much work has happened.
And he was already mentioned by Felix,
but I also just always want to bring Uncle Frank into these spaces.
You know, someone who basically saw me,
picked me out and said,
you're going to do something for this community.
And at the time, it felt like an instruction,
whether I wanted to or not,
whether I believed it was possible or not.
He was determined that each one of us has something to give,
and that he was going to do everything he could
to make sure that we made it to the impact
that we could have in the community.
So I miss him so very much,
and so many of the elders who have come before us.
And I'm so thankful to each and every one of you
who are keeping on this legacy.
Finally, I just want to mention a few people
who are also incredibly important in keeping the work going.
If you have not met her yet,
Katrina is our Chinatown liaison.
She's absolutely amazing,
and has been working so hard,
and has already been just bringing
so many different perspectives
and things that we could be doing for the neighborhood.
So please tell her all of your ideas,
the needs, the dreams,
the challenges in the community.
We know we've got to fix the sidewalks.
That's one thing that is top on our list.
We know we want to make sure
that there are great jobs that continue
and everyone's plugged into what's happening.
And we want to keep all that going with Katrina.
I also want to just recognize and make sure you all...
She's very familiar now
in all of our Chinatown events,
but LaToya Gayle,
who's running for state senate this fall.
The election was in December 1st,
so it's coming up fast.
But in terms of people who are stepping up
to serve our community
and who've already been doing the work,
thank you so much for your courage
and leadership and determination
to make a difference
and being here as always.
So congratulations to everyone.
Thank you for making sure
that Chinatown is part of the
250th anniversary celebration.
July 4th is going to be a big, big moment,
and we're so proud that this is an important marker
of leading up to that for our city and country.
Congratulations, Dr. Wong.
Thank you so much.
I am very honored tonight
to introduce you to me,
Principal Wong,
who will be honored today.
And I'd like to start with some Chinese words
that some of our...
From our school,
we have a Quincy Elementary School table here
along with the upper school as well.
And so I'm going to read,
and it says,
And Dr. Wong,
I met him when I was in fourth grade,
that is when he became principal
at the Josiah Quincy School many years ago.
And even before that,
as you heard,
he had four decades
in the Boston Public Schools
in many roles.
And also, you know,
worked with the superintendent's office
as a specialty assistant,
continuing to work with educators
and prospective leaders,
especially those within the off
or the men educators of color.
And as a fourth grader,
you know, you don't know the impact
an adult has on you
too many years later.
And the Josiah Quincy Upper School
was invisible at one point.
And Dr. Wong
knew how to make it become visible.
And as I think about my journey
as a young person in fourth grade,
moving along my educational career,
and then coming full circle
back to the Josiah Quincy School
as an educator
and somehow ending up as a leader,
I know how much Dr. Wong
has impacted me.
And he is a visionary.
He was able to make
the invisible visible.
And I see that now.
When I first became an educator,
he gave me something similar to this.
He is a calligrapher as well,
a very talented calligrapher.
And he wrote something
about apples and seeds.
And I didn't quite understand it.
But he said, you know,
teachers, many people,
they'll see the students,
they'll just see apples, right?
Potential in all of them.
But it takes an educator
to know and look at a seed
and know that it can become
more than just a seed.
It can grow and nurture it.
And so I really thank Dr. Wong
who, you know, had these small pieces
throughout my journey
without looking back.
It makes it completely visible.
So you're invisible,
making visible is definitely great.
And that's exactly what happened
with the upper school.
We had families at the elementary school
during that time
who absolutely loved
what was happening there,
wanted to extend that into...
No one wanted to leave the invisible, right?
And then come back.
We have many staff at the schools,
even Williams here and others
who were students at the school
and come back as educators.
And so I really want to thank you for that.
You are a true visionary
and had a huge impact on many lives.
So thank you very much.
...see them to evolve in Hong Kong
to help you...
Receiving the award together
with Leon and Xiao Wu,
whom I respect
and I also admire.
And thank you,
Principal Xinjie Xu
for the kind words.
And as a colleague
and your family I've known for so long,
I appreciate that relationship, of course.
I also want to particularly thank
Mayor Michelle Wu
in supporting
what we do in education
as well as in the
Quincy Upper School.
I remember she was
inspiring in talking to me
many years ago
when we had dim sum
for the upper school
in the inception,
having dim sum in the restaurants.
And then she was supporting us
when she was working with
Mayor Menino.
And she was very supportive
of education and
the city of Boston
as well as Chinatown.
And then
Mayor Michelle Wu
continued to support us
as a city councilor,
chair of the city council
and then the mayor of the city of Boston.
And she conducted
the talking ceremony
of the Quincy Upper School students.
And then opening the
Quincy Upper School
two years ago.
That was really
another journey.
She did it very quietly
but I remember
and see everything.
I remember everything in my mind.
I'm truly blessed
and with the trust
and the support from the city
and the community in
the Chinese community
to serve in various positions
and opportunities
to the city of Boston
particularly to
this Chinese community.
And I'm very glad to see
the Quincy Elementary School
and the Quincy Upper School
getting into fruition.
And I'm thankful
and blessed to see
CJM, the principal's school
and also the co-headmasters
of the Quincy Upper School,
Richard Chang
and also Steve Charleson
who worked so hard together as a team
to bring the school
with the support of the parents and teachers
and many of them are here today.
And to make the school
into the next space
of our educational journey
not just in Chinatown
but in the city of Boston.
They brought it into
the International Ecological Program.
That is so important in the journey.
It's hard-finding for the city of Boston.
And they're all authorized by the IPO.
So the Quincy Elementary School
from kindergarten to the upper school
all the way to twelfth.
Students together can learn together.
They can learn together.
They can communicate together.
No matter they are Asians,
they're black, they're Hispanic, white,
you know, anyone.
They grew up as brothers and sisters.
That is what is so important.
And this curriculum is high quality.
And this is what I felt
when I came to this country
And education today
is still the best equalizer
for our community,
particularly for the new community.
And I'm glad that we have the opportunity.
I'm so glad we have the opportunity
to have your trust and your support
in every phase of it.
And I come here today really happy.
Somebody asked me,
say, a teacher asked me,
what have you recognized me for?
I said, I don't know.
But I think it's important for us to say
I'm so happy to see
many of you who are together with me.
We have dinner together year after year,
month after month.
We just like trying to get it together.
But it is so cool today
that when we are able to see
something that we all want to see
for a long time.
To have a school that is for everybody,
to have a school, a program
that will change the learning style,
will change the structure,
will change the culture of learning,
and start to grow
the next generation of learners
and also citizens in the city of Boston.
Yeah, I think the leadership of
Mayor Michel Faux, right?
This is so important.
It's what the Bible says.
We need to have a new
man of wine scheme for the new wine.
Hopefully, we have a new
man of wine scheme in the city of Boston,
with the Boston Public School.
I think it's very important.
So, when you have time,
or even if you don't have time,
schedule to go into the
Quincy Elementary School,
go into the Quincy Upper School.
Not just look at the building,
talk to the people,
look at the program.
It's the people first,
and then the program,
or the software later,
and then the hardware.
You may admire the Upper School,
but it's more important
to see what is going on
inside the school.
And what's going on outside the school
is even more important
because now the school
can actually be connected
with all the 6,500 schools,
all Ivy schools all over the world.
Teachers can plan the lesson together.
Students can do the project together
with one curriculum like that.
That would be the hard work
of the principals at the
Elementary School and the
Upper School headmaster.
It's important to go in and enjoy it
because we've waited for so long
to make sure the Quincy Upper School
is in the community.
And I want to thank Mayor Michelle Wu
for all the silent,quiet,
but really strong help
to make this a reality.
Now I know many of you know me,
but those who know me
know that I don't like to talk.
But I'm always reminded by my father
If you want to be seen, stand up.
If you want to be heard, speak up.
If you want to be respected, shut up.
So I'll shut up and enjoy the music.
Thank you very much.
