Hi, Homeworthy. I'm Teresa. Welcome to my home in Georgia.
I can't wait to show you around. Come on in.
You're watching Homeworthy, where we believe every home has a story.
My name is Teresa Butler. I'm an interior designer in Atlanta, Georgia.
Welcome to my home in Mableton, Georgia.
I've lived in Mableton for a year.
I found this home because I was on the hunt for a mid-century
modern that was a real fixer.
I didn't want anything that was turnkey.
I wanted to be able to renovate the home and turn it into something special and
unique, specifically for my needs.
And I was open to any part of Georgia.
I just wanted to find the right diamond in the rough.
My vision for the space was to really listen to the home,
walk through the space and take time to figure out what this
home needs, what would look best, what would feel right,
what would feel most natural because the bones of the home were there.
It had all the beautiful things, the vaulted ceilings,
the beautiful stone fireplace, the big open windows.
And so my vision for the home started with figuring out
what I felt like would fit best with the existing style of the home.
And so I went for clean, simple lines,
but also I used a lot of my favorite colors.
I'm not afraid of color. I love green.
I love yellow. I love orange. I love blues.
And I also wanted to keep the natural
colors in the home, like the wood beams and the wood ceilings.
And I think bringing color in really helped balance it out.
Welcome to my entry.
This space began pretty dark and dreary and I wanted to
brighten it by adding more color to the space.
So I just splashed a ton of my favorite
pieces of artwork and sculptural pieces from my travels.
So you'll see here a gorgeous piece that I collected from Jillian
Bryce Gallery, one of my favorite galleries here in Atlanta.
And then there's kind of a collage of some of my favorite artists
mixed in with some of my own pieces because I love to paint so much.
And then you'll see like these beautiful little sculptural pieces.
This is a Picasso inspired piece that I picked up in Ghana.
You know, again,
like some of these are from some of my favorite artists or art galleries that I
love to frequent.
This one is one of my all-time favorite pieces from an amazing
Atlanta artist named Daniel Zimmerman. I adore him so much.
Ironically,
I met him making pottery and come to find out we had so much in common
and he's such a great, talented artist.
So I have some of his pieces splashed around throughout my home.
This is another piece from Jillian Bryce Gallery from a wonderful artist
that I really love.
And then some of these other pieces are pieces that I've painted myself,
mixed media. I love to play around with pencil, charcoal, pastels,
acrylic. I'm afraid of oils,
but Daniel is trying to get me to paint with oil.
So that's the story behind these.
So most of these pieces are mine.
This is an authentic cowhide rug that I picked up at High Point
Market. One of my favorite places to go. Again, you know,
when I find something that I love, I tend to get a lot of it.
I don't know if anybody else has that problem,
but I have several amazing cowhide pieces that I love to
incorporate by themselves or even layering them with other pieces.
I am a sucker for a great estate sale.
So not only do I love getting the beautiful pieces from High Point Market or
Market, I go to a ton of estate sales.
And both of these pieces are from estate sales.
This piece is from an amazing estate.
So I went completely broke in that sale,
but this particular piece is from a great antique place called Fig House.
Teresa,
she does beautiful things and I love collecting all the little trinkets
from her. And this little burl table had to come home with me.
When I say I want my house to feel like I'm getting a big hug,
I want like every corner of my home to be filled with all the things that I love.
And some of the things that I collect are really cool books.
So I like to have just clusters of
books kind of here and there and everywhere.
And I actually look through them often.
I have a lot of beautiful old art news
pieces from 1951. I love collecting old things.
There's something really special about having really old pieces that
you can collect and go back and go, wow, this stuff is back in style.
It's full circle. And next I want to show you my guest room.
There's so much that I love about this room. Uh, I,
I wanted it to feel calm and quiet and relaxing and
soothing. I actually come in here and sleep sometimes just so I can experience
the ambiance and kind of get a feel for what my guests might be experiencing.
And it also helps me to kind of think about, you know, what does the space need?
If I were a guest in here,
what would I want to put in here to make me feel more comfortable and more at
home? Uh, you'll see here this, um,
really interesting bookshelf that I actually fabricated
myself, made it in my garage and put it together because I needed something that
was very special, unique, but also shallow. Uh,
and so the best way for me to, um,
get exactly what I need is to make it. And I love making a lot of things.
So I made this bookcase to fit some of my favorite pieces of art
books,
some of my ceramics because I love to make pottery and plants,
all the things I love over here,
you'll see this really large headboard that goes from behind
the, uh, from behind the nightstands all the way across to the other nightstands.
And so I made this as well.
I like to make things. You guys, the pillows, I made the pillows,
the artwork. I painted the artwork.
I just love for my home to be filled with all the things that I love.
And sometimes I just like to make all the little pieces in my own time and put
it all together. I have this gorgeous, large, uh,
wool Ushak rug that is really bringing the space together,
pulling the blues out.
And then I found these really gorgeous mid-century modern swivel
chairs, uh, at an estate sale.
Exactly. I picked them up exactly like this. Didn't recover them or anything.
I just cleaned them up and they're perfect.
This is a piece that they're not antiques. They're brand spanking new.
And, um, I purchased them and it's,
it's a really long story, but they weren't going to work,
but I wasn't really willing to get rid of them.
So I took the legs off and they they're not on their, you know,
intended feet and just put them in here. And I thought, you know what?
This works. I really love this. I love the,
the detail work and the design in each drawer.
And I decided to keep them. I love the, uh,
Candice Olsen grass cloth ceiling.
And I love the way we decided to play with the ceiling height by bringing the
grass cloth down onto the wall, all the way across.
It gives it a really nice illusion.
And it also kind of touches on the modern feel for the space. I love it.
My background is actually in pediatric anesthesia. Uh,
I have been a pediatric CRNA for 14 years.
Um, I've worked for a major hospital here in Atlanta,
Georgia for all 14 years.
And from 1997,
I have also been an interior designer. Uh, however,
being a full-time interior designer didn't start until about seven years ago.
You know, my inspiration who and what inspires me changes
throughout the years. Um,
one of the biggest names that comes to mind for me, I,
I am obsessed with Nadia Watts. I think she's amazing. She's I've met her.
She is the sweetest soul and I just love her design aesthetic.
And I love the way she incorporates all the little things that she loves into
her design. Um, and that really resonates with me.
I also love Corey Damon Jenkins. Um,
his design aesthetic is top notch and I love his
design ethic. He is such an amazing designer. So yes,
I've met them both and, um,
um, I have felt so much support and I really love their design
style and their work ethic. Next. I want to show you my home office,
one of my absolute favorite spaces of the house.
So this space gives me so much joy.
It's so much fun.
There's so much whimsy in this room and I love every corner of it.
Um, pink is not my favorite color.
My favorite color is green or yellow, but pink is a close second. Um,
I love the mural wallpaper. I mean, who cannot love this?
This is the first thing you, when you walk in this room, people go,
and then they look up and they go,
I love this fun detail work that we did in the ceiling.
And we wanted to do that because we'd love this area rug that we found at
Momini at High Point Market.
And Momini had this beautiful wool rug with the burgundy and the
pink contrast in this beautiful wave pattern.
And we thought how cool would it be if we created our own stencil
and took that pattern up to the ceiling, but made it subtle, not, you know,
in your face,
but just a nice transition from the strong pink to a softer
tone. And we think it turned out beautifully. It's so nice.
I love our wall sconce that we have here over the desk.
The wall sconce and the chandelier are from Cyan Design. Um,
Cyan is another great company that we work with for lighting and home
accessories and furnishings.
And we think the soft lines of the wall sconce work beautifully with
the soft lines on the ceiling, as well as the rug.
So let's go into the living room. I can't wait to show you that space.
So this space has so many things that I love about it. The windows,
the natural light that comes in, because I also love plants.
I love beautiful plants everywhere.
And now I'm getting in trouble with propagation. So that's a problem. Um,
um, I,
I love this space because I am able to, uh,
showcase really large pieces of artwork. Um,
so I am obsessed with this beautiful grass cloth
draped wall.
And I have added two large paintings here, um,
that I painted just for this space. Um,
and I plan on switching those out often really large pieces of artwork.
And I, I, I just think it's so much fun and inviting. Um,
I love this amazing soft curved sofa.
We found this sofa as an,
at an estate sale and picked up the fabric through Zoffany fabrics and
had it reupholstered. And it's one of my favorite pieces. It's yellow.
Um, another great estate sell fine.
I got these amazing velvet covered can Tony chairs. Um,
and in, in certain light, it looks yellow. And in other light,
it looks like a beautiful chartreuse. I love these chairs so much.
They work so beautifully. I don't think I'll ever get rid of them.
I love the beams and the really high ceilings and the a-line frame.
I love it so much.
One of the biggest things that I wanted was a space that would give my
large plant in large trees, um,
an ability to grow in height.
And so I have a couple of really nice trees here and they have really thrived in
this space. So I'm just, I'm happy about all those things.
So one, one thing you might notice is that nothing really matches.
And I think that is what brings in the interest. Um,
these beautiful cowhide nesting coffee tables are from classic home.
Uh, another one of my favorite, uh, companies that I love to work with.
And then I just paired it with this cute little marble
table. And what I love about this table is you can just
nestle it up to your piece and have your coffee or what you're
drinking or a little snack. And it just fits right in.
It's perfect. And then I,
another table that has a marble top doesn't match at all, but it works.
It works really well and everything flows and compliments each other beautifully.
Oh my goodness. This monstrosity, this is original to the home.
I hope to have that restored in phase two of this house. Um,
but yes, it is original. And you guys, when I purchased this home,
I wish I could show you, it had this massive iron
gas situation inside here.
And it took four men to pull it out and take it out of the home.
So lots of major changes went on in this house.
This entire room was just this paneling
and then just textured white walls.
So we wallpapered everything that was wall space and if it was
wood, we left it. Uh, we wanted that to remain original to the house.
So the color palette in here, the, the idea was to,
um,
to honor the wood tones that were original to the home,
but also bring in these wonderful colors that I
love and that not, they don't necessarily match, but,
um, you know, when placed well,
it all works really good together.
I think another great thing that brings color into the space are my National
Geographics. Um, I am an avid National Geographic reader,
and I have almost every issue ever published.
Yes, I'm proud of that.
And so I could actually fill up an entire book case with National
Geographics, but I love the color of the publications.
I love the color of the spine of books.
You see this beautiful pattern sofa and two
pillows that do not match,
but it works beautifully together because I pull the orange from the
artwork.
And so it all kind of compliments each other and works well together.
And so my new thing when I come home is, you know,
I used to come home and just turn on the TV and it would be in the background.
But my new thing when I come home is I immediately put on a record and turn it
up. And I am so much more productive and so much more relaxed, you know,
less news, less of what's going on in the world.
And getting more in touch with yourself is what's key.
And so I highly recommend getting a record player.
Another piece that I made,
I made this book case and a lot of the little trinkets and things have,
each piece has meaning. Um, I love,
I'm obsessed with art museums and whenever I go to an art museum,
I try to collect a snow globe. Um,
unfortunately all the art museums don't create these,
but I've been lucky enough to get one from the Met as well as from, uh,
the Guggenheim.
And so these are special to me and I love these again,
my national geographics. I just have a few of them out.
Some of my favorite books that I'm reading right now.
And then some of my favorite people, family photos.
I have these types of conversations with a lot of my clients. Um,
so, you know,
sometimes I get clients who they want what's trending and what's new and what's
next and you know, all the most popular colors.
And I try to explain to my clients what you want is what speaks to your soul
because when you come home from a long day's work or whatever you do,
that is what is going to give you the most joy.
That's what's going to give you the most serenity and feel most at peace.
When you're in your space, the things that are trending, they're great.
They're fine. They have their place, but it's what gives you joy.
What do you collect? What have your parents passed down to you?
Those are the things that give a home soul.
So when I think about what gives a home soul, I,
I think about things or experiences that are important to you.
That resonate with you and mean most to you like travels.
Did you bring things from those travels that we can use in your home?
Uh, family photos, collected items, things that were passed down.
For me, those are the types of things that give a home soul.
I'd love to show you my kitchen. Let's go.
Welcome
to my kitchen.
This space was dark, dreary,
dated. It was awful. Uh,
we literally gutted this kitchen all the way down to the sub floor.
Uh, we took the cabinetry out, the flooring out, did new sub floor,
new drywall, new everything. And I'm really pleased with it.
I love the soft natural wood cabinets.
We opted for a GE cafe appliances.
I really appreciate the nice soft white.
I think it compliments my countertops beautifully.
And I love the hardware on all the appliances.
So that's one of my favorites and I highly recommend.
Another thing that I love is, um, the Cristallo, um,
quartzite countertops.
So the Cristallo quartzite countertops, um,
are throughout and we decided to do a waterfall in the
Island and put the sink. Well, the sink was already here.
So we kept the same footprint. Uh,
one thing that I added or should I say changed was when I purchased the
home, there were cabinets over here.
There really wasn't a designated space for, um,
dining and eating.
So I decided the best way to address that would be to put a
banquette here. Uh,
so really optimize all the cabinetry in the kitchen,
did more of a pantry situation that hugs the refrigerator.
And we did a custom built in banquette here with storage so that you could store
things. Um,
and another great opportunity for some fun artwork and all of my plants that are
just everywhere.
I love, uh, the hardware and the finishes.
We chose a champagne bronze and I chose that finish because I thought it really
complimented the cafe appliances really well. Um,
I made the window treatments. Um, this is a really pretty, uh,
screen printed sheer fabric. Um,
and I essentially just did a very simple Roman shade,
a soft Roman shade, um,
so that it would soften the windows,
but you can still get all the natural light coming in the trim around these
windows. And actually, that's a great question.
Throughout the home are original to the home. So yes,
but what I changed in the kitchen, um,
you'll see when you look throughout the house,
the trim in the rest of the home is like a dark wall nutty finish,
almost what you see or what you saw in the living room.
And I wanted the finish in the kitchen to compliment almost match the cabinetry.
So we'd lighten the trim in here so that it just wouldn't be as much of a
contrast and compliment one another better. We had this light made,
it was, um, a company in India who made the light.
And after seven months of going back and forth about the length of each arm
because it had to be made, um,
a specific size for our needs. I did.
The original piece had arms that would have extended past the Island.
And I didn't want that. So what we,
what we did was send them new plans for the dimensions and where we would want
each arm to stop. And in doing that,
that changed the globes fitting in this circular area because we shortened the
arms and they didn't fit.
So we had to ship it back to them and have it remade. Um,
in the end we got it to work out and we're very happy with the results.
We love this piece. Next I'm going to show you my cute little laundry room.
So guys, this is my cute little laundry room. It's small but mighty.
When I purchased this house,
this laundry room was big enough for a washer and a dryer.
And for me,
these little spaces are the ones that you can go crazy and do fun things with
and wallpaper everywhere. And I needed more storage space.
So I was able to,
I was willing to lose a little bit of closet space in the room next door so that
we could widen the laundry room and add cabinetry.
The same custom cabinetry that we used in the kitchen,
we brought into the laundry room. And so to make it fun,
I decided to wallpaper the walls, the ceiling, all in one paper.
And we added a really beautiful quartz countertop.
And I chose quartz over quartzite because lots more spills,
things like that going on in here with laundry detergents.
And I want it to be an easier cleanup. So for the floors,
I chose this beautiful marble mosaic. It's like a dot,
like a large and a small dot. And I felt like, gosh, it's so much fun.
It's whimsical, but it's also really sophisticated in the high end.
So we chose this marble circular mosaic floor and I love it so much.
I love how the pattern is so organic and it looks different throughout.
And I think it just gives it more movement and more interest. Oh my gosh,
this cute little light fixture. Um, this is a Safavea light fixture.
It was so adorable and I was obsessed with it and I was super shocked that I
found it on sale for like a hundred bucks. And I was like,
it's going to my laundry room. But anyway, yeah, I loved it.
I thought it was so cute. Let me show you my bedroom.
It's of course my favorite spot in the house. Okay. Everywhere is.
Okay. So here's my bedroom and what other color would I choose but green?
It's my favorite color. Um,
I completely color drenched my bedroom in a beautiful Benjamin Moore green.
We decided to texture the ceiling in two to three shades of green to give it
more interest.
And I am completely obsessed with the chandelier that we chose for the space.
It's unique. It's different. It gives mid-century modern vibes.
Um, and I picked this up from Corbett Lighting at High Point Market.
The bed, um,
I upholstered myself and decided to make a custom bolster, uh,
for the head of the bed just to fit just right in here and then finish it off
with a nice throw on the end. Um,
I went with simple but really unique and eye-catching artwork.
This is another gorgeous piece from Jillian Bryce Gallery.
Both of them are, and I love how the small one plays off on the big one.
Colors compliment each other and they're both really interesting and great
conversational pieces. I like weird stuff.
I think you should have something weird in every part of your house.
It just makes it more interesting. So you guys,
the way this room began, it was not a bedroom. It was a family room.
This house had kind of a weird setup.
There was a living room and then this family room here,
and this was all completely open.
And so I decided that I wanted to make this the primary bedroom bed and bath
area.
And we closed it off and I absolutely love that wood paneling is coming back
because I think it adds so much warmth to a space.
And so I decided to do one wall of wood paneling and I had that added in with
some really cool trim and I love it so much.
It's one of my favorite things in this room.
I did these beautiful blue velvet drapes. Um,
I made these myself pleated them with a French pleat and had these installed for
the bedroom. And I, I love this blue up against the green.
I think it's really pretty and I wanted to add a pop of a little bit of a kind
of an orangey Brown and I think it just adds more interest and I love these so
much. So pretty. All right guys, let's go to my bathroom. It's just as lovely.
So in this bathroom you can see it's small, it's compact.
And so I wanted to make every corner matter.
I brought my favorite color green in with the tile and brought this beautiful
green ceramic tile in wall to wall in the shower and all the way up to the
ceiling. And I like to be able to put all my special things out.
And so I wanted the niche to be nice and large and have really good lighting
because I love taking a shower and that is the only light on in the room.
It's just wonderful. It feels great.
So I love the green tile. So beautiful.
I also wanted the seamless glass shower to go as high as we possibly could.
If I could, I would have done a sauna, but couldn't do that.
And then another special part of this bathroom for me are the closet doors
because it's such a small space.
I wanted all of those little things to be more special.
So I took sheets of wood and cut them down to make closet doors and literally
carved them out with with a tool and then stained and finished them off and made
these beautiful closet doors.
And so I did it on both the linen cabinet as well as the other and I'm not
opening it for you.
You trust me. You don't want to see what's in here.
But these are my favorite pieces of this bathroom and the tile.
And then over here you can see that we chose this beautiful Moroccan pattern on
the back of this, uh, this wall.
And I think it's just really interesting. And for more storage,
we did medicine cabinets and look, there's another friend. No. Okay.
So this cute little guy I picked up from,
oh gosh, accent decor at high point market.
Everybody should go to high point market. Um, and I love him so much.
And he's a catch all. He catches everything. Bobby pins,
my cute little pins, be a nice human.
It's so easy.
And then I found this cutie pie at an antique store.
Um, I think I mentioned fig house before where I found the Burlwood console
table. This cutie pie was sitting there and I had no use for him,
but I felt like he was whimsical and adorable and I loved his ears and I didn't
even intend for them to be paired together. But how cute are they?
Any precious? I mean, it's the little things guys.
I said you want weird things in your spaces.
Did you also want whimsical things in your spaces? Really fun things,
things that make you smile.
What I love most about my home honestly changes daily.
Some days it's the natural light that comes into the living room and I just sit
here and enjoy my tea and sit with my dog.
Some days it's the beautiful breeze on my back porch and I'm enjoying my
flowers. So it, it, it changes daily for me.
I love the house so much that there are so many things that I could choose.
That's such a, that's a question.
I can't give you one answer for because there's so many great parts of this home
that I love. Let me show you my art studio. Come on.
So this is my messy little piece of heaven up here in this cute little loft of
my home where I've been able to fit all of my paints,
all of my brushes and canvases and I could spend hours up here just creating
anything. Um, usually when I paint,
I don't have anything specific in mind.
I just kind of like go with it and then see where it takes me.
And I'm usually pretty happy with it.
The biggest thing is I like to use a lot of color and usually colors that are
people don't necessarily consider that they, you know,
what can would necessarily put together.
But I like mixing and blending colors and then trying to infuse my pieces in
some of my clients homes.
Home is a sacred space where when all the busyness and all the things that are
going on in the world, you know,
become too much. Home is safe. Home is safety. Home is calm.
Home is peace. Home is serenity. And you know,
I recently gave an interview and one of the things I said about my home is that
when I come home, I want to feel like it's giving me a big hug. Homeworthy.
Thank you so much for hanging out with me today, but I need to get back to work.
See you later.
Thanks for watching.
