The retaliation trial of the Johnson County Sheriff has ended in a mistrial.
Sheriff Adam King is accused of retaliating against a witness to a sexual harassment
allegation. Foxhorse Peyton Yeager is in the newsroom tonight with more, Peyton.
Stephen Heather, we've been following this story this evening. Sheriff Adam King left
the courthouse this evening with his wife moments after the judge ordered a mistrial.
The jury deliberating for about two days and could not come to a unanimous decision.
We now know one juror was holding strong since the beginning and said they would not reach an
agreement. Which way that juror was leaning, though, we do not know. Now Sheriff Adam King
is charged with felony official oppression, accused of retaliating against former Chief
Deputy James Salter. Salter testified that after he reported a female employee's accusations
that King sexually harassed her, King adversely disciplined him and placed him on administrative
leave. King has denied all allegations. His attorneys argue the sheriff didn't know Salter
had reported the allegations when Salter was disciplined, they say, for unrelated reasons.
The investigation was assigned to the Texas Rangers. King has remained in his role now on
a limited basis and has pleaded not guilty. Jurors started deliberating Monday afternoon.
After nearly two weeks of testimony, we've been following it, prosecutors called more than 20
witnesses. The defense did not call any witnesses. Sheriff King did not testify on his own behalf.
Now the jury stayed until about 10.30 PM last night, Monday evening, then picked up deliberations
today. And we know this jury sent a few requests to the judge, Stephen Heather, during deliberations
to be brought back into the courtroom, hear portions of the testimony again. The judge then
sent them back to the deliberation room, asking them to come to a verdict in good faith. But the
jury ultimately could not. And now this process will start all over. This jury will be cleared.
A new jury will be selected for a new trial at a later date. If convicted,
Sheriff Adam King faces probation and up to 10 years in prison.
