Their journey continues with a visit to quirky local shops and a relaxing bike ride through East Coast Park, concluding with a feast of affordable street food at the East Coast Lagoon Food Village.
Thank you so much.
Have you been here before?
Oh really?
Let's see if we're lucky today.
What a beautiful day.
Look at the sun is coming out.
And we're hungry again, which is great.
Doesn't look that busy.
I mean, it's busy enough.
We're here for this place.
Mr. and Mrs. Morgan.
We're going to get some prata and curry for breakfast.
In our last video, we explored some of the iconic locations in Singapore
like Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay.
We thought today though we wanted to see a little bit more of the local side,
a more laid-back kind of side of Singapore.
So we are here now in Joo Chiat Road.
This area is full of beautiful old shop houses.
But also, there's like a vibey, trendy kind of new development here as well.
But we're going to start our day at this traditional breakfast place.
It's interesting that they don't even call this a hawker center.
They call this a coffee shop.
So a hawker center must be like much bigger.
It looks so nice.
Love the vibe of this area already.
It's a very, very photogenic place.
So I'm excited to walk around today and see what is around here.
Okay.
We got it.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
Oh, this looks delicious.
Hot and crispy.
I think this is the plain one and I think this is the egg one.
Oh, okay.
I was going to say banana.
Oh, that's two different things.
And this is a curry dip?
Yeah, I think it's like fish.
Is it fish or mutton?
I'm not sure.
You know what I forgot to get?
Sambal.
Can you get it?
Yeah, I should go get it.
Oh, that's good.
Alright.
Thank you, baby.
I'm not sure if this is actually extra charge for the sambal.
But she was like, they didn't take my money and she's like, it's okay.
It looks spicy.
Yeah, I think that's the best part.
Okay.
Should we?
Yeah.
This is the plain one.
We can try the plain one first.
Looks like they smash it.
Do you know how they make...
Like they go like this and make it fluffy?
Could be.
Put it in the curry first.
Really?
So how do you eat it?
Maybe we should put the sauce on top.
And then cut it.
Oh, not dipping it.
So we go like this.
Just do it on one side.
I guess I'm going to put some of this too.
To make it spicy.
And then you cut like this.
Thank you.
It's so crispy but it's not greasy.
I think that's the key.
But it's a really light curry.
You can put a lot of sauce because it absorbs it.
How is it?
Very good.
It's not oily.
It's crispy but it's not oily.
It's really nice.
It's the best in Singapore.
It is the best in Singapore.
I needed extra protein.
What did you order?
So I got steamed eggs and...
Stir-fried chicken.
Three dollars.
So cheap.
That store is also busy.
And they have, I don't know, 50 different dishes to choose from.
Amazing.
It's just like different cooked dishes with rice, isn't it?
Wow, chicken is delicious.
Stir-fried chicken with ginger.
Okay, ready?
Yeah.
The camera is over here, yeah?
Yeah, yeah.
Three, two, one.
Thank you.
We do one more here.
Yeah, yeah.
Thank you for the memory.
Okay.
You're welcome.
Really nice chatting with you.
Wow.
Doesn't this remind you of a place?
Phuket?
Exactly, like that street in Phuket.
But even nicer.
With these houses.
But these are much nicer.
Do people live in them?
I think so.
I think they're residential.
Residential homes.
Oh, on this side too.
Oh, on both sides.
So the lady we just met at the coffee shop
said that we must check out the Peranakan houses
which is this beautiful street here.
She said she is Peranakan
which you describe the culture
as the Chinese and the Malay got married.
So back in the day
when the Chinese immigrants came here
and settled down
they married the Malay woman
and they have their own unique culture
because they speak different language
they have their own unique food
they have their own unique dress
and it's a huge part of the culture
here in Singapore as well.
I like this bright green.
I like this one
but I also like the lavender one.
Oh, the one next to the lavender is nice too.
The green one.
Even this residence matches her car
to her house.
That's so cute.
You know what I think?
Even when it's raining
or it's really sunny outside
it's actually not that bad in Singapore
because so many places have these
walkways, right?
Yeah, that's covered walkways.
That's quite nice.
Even in the center of the city
where we were yesterday
we bought the umbrella
but I was like, oh
there's actually a lot of covered walkways.
If I were to live in Singapore
this would be the area I want to live in.
It's so chill
and so many beautiful cafes
green space.
I think it is a very livable community
because there's, you know
there's schools
like a school here
parks
lots of restaurants
grocery stores.
And just get an e-bike.
Get around by e-bike.
I don't know if it's well connected
by the metro system.
Probably, no?
The metro doesn't come all the way out here?
I'm not sure about the east.
Wow!
So colorful.
Wow, this is a pretty street.
I actually brought you here
for coffee though.
Coffee?
Yeah, look right here.
It's just a little coffee window.
That's so cute!
Wow!
Hello!
You want a coffee?
Where are you from?
I'm from Canada.
Canada?
I'm from Thailand.
I'm Singaporean friend.
Hi!
I'm always not sure
about to say Hong Kong or Canada.
Your name?
Flora.
Flora like a flower.
Flora!
Thank you.
Welcome!
By the river
pretend that you have
I see stars above you
I swear that I love you
Thank you so much!
You made my day!
Blessing card.
Pardon me?
Blessing card.
I grabbed two shares for us.
I love you.
It's a very nice song, you know?
I freaking love Singapore.
So much love and good vibes.
And good wishes
from the people we met.
Especially today.
Like the first couple days
have been amazing
but today just feels like
surrounded by love.
It's nice.
That's really good coffee.
Maybe the building behind us
is like a Catholic church
or some sort of...
Oh, I thought it's her house.
No, I think maybe this is part of
a church or some sort of like
an area, like a community
for people to come and
maybe do Bible studies
or something like that
because definitely
the saints that she mentioned
the blessings that she have here
I believe it is a Catholic community.
And I'm Catholic actually
so I find that it's very
gentle way to spread love
and faith.
It's very nice.
And I hope that our coffee
is actually supporting
whatever she is doing as well.
Real quick.

She collects some messages
from her customers.
From different countries.
That's awesome.
Sawasdee ka.
From Thailand.
I'm S from Thailand.
This is so cute.
Bye guys.
Have a good day.
Thank you for your lovely singing.
You have a lovely voice.
And now we have to look up
that song.
It's going to be
your theme song.
Cat.
Meow.
Hey.
I'm cat calling.
How you doing?
Do it properly.
How you doing girl?
You're looking sexy there.
Meow.
$288
for a
Pomeranian.
That's crazy.
Our cat was free.
True.
This whole section are
pet store.
This too.
Puppies for sale.
Just this one and this one.
No, look across the street.
Oh.
Paw market.
Animal holistic.
Oh, down there too.
Yeah, I guess this is like
the pet central.
This is an enrichment school.
They are teaching
dogs to do
things like
posh lives of pets.
Pets for celebrities?
Not for celebrities.
I think you know like nowadays
there's more and more couples
that don't have children
and have pets instead.
The pets are like their babies.
So they send them to school.
They send them to grooming.
They send them to
hotels for a staycation.
I think maybe this is like
part of that culture.
Not like
our stray dogs and cats
we have in some way.
They live a good life too.
Not posh though,
but they live a good life.
This one is finding a treat
in the angbao
which is the red pocket.
And then paw painting
on canvas.
I see the paw painting
in here actually.
But look at this.
This one is playing keyboard.
No way.
Tambourine.
Strumming the guitar.
Man, I can't even do those things.
And then after you finish
enrollment,
you get a graduation photo.
I've never seen this before.
I mean I've heard about this
but I've never seen schools.
So the more we walk down
Joo Chiat Road,
the more vibing it's getting.
Like there's lots of
really nice restaurants.
A lot more street art everywhere
and still the beautiful houses.
Lots of food.
But there are a couple
home goods and souvenir shops
that I really want to check out
because I think recently
I've been enjoying
buying little souvenirs
for our friends.
Our friends that take care of our cats.
Our friends that live on the island.
So I want to get
a little something.
But I love that a lot of
those souvenir shops now
are products that are designed
by local designers
and local artists.
So let's check out
a few of those places.
Tom and Jerry.
My favorite childhood cartoon.
Really?
Yes.
What's your favorite
childhood cartoon?
Sailor Moon?
No.
I like Big Comfy Couch,
Inspector Gadget,
Recess, Pepper Ann.
Or none of them?
I don't know any of them.
I know Dragon Ball Z.
I wonder if other people
will know what I'm talking about.
Every Saturday morning
I wake up really early
and I bring my pillow downstairs
and I just watch
these cartoons
that I just mentioned.
Is that where we're going?
Heartware Store Gallery.
Yes.
It's so hidden.
We missed it
the first time actually.
There's some sort
of exhibition too.
It says Lazy Days
with Dog and Frog Exhibition.
This is so neat.
Oh.
Hey, I got something
you might like.
To match my style?
This is just like
someone took their relationship
and made it into a cartoon
or some sort of graphic series.
We could do that.
What do you pick?
This is Dog and Frog.
What are we?
A dung beetle.
I'm the beetle,
Flor's the dung.
Because without me
you cannot grow.
And without you
I don't have purpose.
You have no purpose in life.
Yes.
So we're a team.
I prefer to be a cat.
You can be a frog.
I don't want to be dung.
It says, say what?
Super shock.
Singlish.
To learn all these
Singlish words.
Like Singaporean English?
I tapa lunch for you, okay?
But that actually
is just a Chinese.
I think this one is good.
I'm going to say this
to our Singaporean friends.
Wah, today
you're so stylo milo.
Got hot date, is it?
So fast?
Got something.
I think it's really cute.
Oh, she wrapped it.
We got 2 coasters
that reminds us of our time
in Singapore.
We saw both the
Gardens by the Bay show
and the Peranakan houses.
But with cats in them.
Really cute.
Yeah.
It's the perfect weather
for a gelato.
What you got?
Sea salt.
Hojicha.
Is it good?
My mango is really good.
It's really good.
It's like a salty tea taste.
And this place does
the waffle differently.
They added herbs in there.
Your mango is really nice.
They added thyme in the cone.
The shop smells so good
because they make the waffle cones
fresh in the shop
and they add thyme.
Smells so earthy.
So it takes longer then?
It takes time for them to make it.
Okay.
Pretty good deal.
A dollar for 30 minutes.
And then 50 cents
per 10 minutes after.
Oh, these are good quality bikes.
What a beautiful park.
It's a super nice.
So we are now at
East Coast Park.
So this is a very long
kind of scenic coastline
for about I think 15 kilometers long
where people come to enjoy the sunset,
have picnics,
barbecue, cycle run.
Camping even.
Just enjoy all this nature,
all this space.
So nice.
And today is a weekend
so you can see there's actually
lots of families around enjoying it.
And we're now slowly making our way
to the hawker center nearby.
We need to add in some exercise,
burn some calories
because there's a lot of good things
to eat at the,
I think it's called
the East Coast Lagoon Food Village.
They're famous for the chicken wings.
That looks like a beach over here.
Is it man-made beach?
I think all of this is reclaimed land.
Like they fill it to add an extension.
Like this whole park?
I think so, yeah.
No way.
There's a lot of this
in like Hong Kong Harbor as well.
They just add a lot
to increase the green space
that they can build.
Should we stop here?
Yeah.
Feel like we're back in Samui again.
Except we don't have
all those shipping containers.
We rarely see shipping containers
like this in Samui.
No.
We see cruises.
Yeah.
Squid boats.
And fishing boats.
Long tail boats.
This would be a great dating spot.
Right?
Yeah.
Pack a little picnic to the beach.
Go finish your day
at the hawker market.
But eating chicken wings,
not a first date thing, you know?
It's not enjoyable
if you have to eat it with pork and eggs.
True.
But that's the first challenge.
Can you eat?
That's the test.
Can you eat like your real self?
Can you be sucking the bones
of a fish head soup?
Eating chicken feet?
That's real love.
I feel like as we get older,
we really appreciate the cities
that put a lot of thought
into public spaces for people.
Like this place has lots of parks,
lots of green space.
Playgrounds.
Playgrounds, exercise paths,
cycling paths, toilets.
It's just really nice.
And I think these are things
that a lot of people appreciate
when they want to live healthy,
you know?
When they want to enjoy life
that doesn't cost so much money.
It's like, this is amazing.
Yay.
Worked up the appetite.
I'm so hungry.
Me too.
Oh.
Smells delicious.
What are we getting?
Wings?
Wow, I see so much going on.
Wings, sugar cane juice,
and 18 other things.
Satay? We haven't had satay.
Do we need to look up
which places to go
or we just go for it?
I think we just go for it.
Yeah?
Let's just wing it.
Okay, then let's get sugar cane juice
from here.
Okay.
Should we just each get one?
Oh, sure.
Get a big one.
One big sugar cane juice.
Just one.
It's a better price.
One cube is quite big.
Yeah, it's $3.80 for a big one,
but $2.80 for a small one.
Oh.
Do you want sour plum in yours?
No, just regular.
Okay.
Thank you.
Look at the size of this.
Perfect for a weather like this.
Oh, that's so good.
Thank you.
So good, thank you.
Very good.
What is this one?
Oh.
That looks amazing.
Do you want to get some?
Let's do it.
Why don't we do five chicken, five beef?
This place has chicken wings.
Oh, yeah.
Barbecue chicken wings.
Five pieces for $10.
Five is good.
$10.
Wow.
They all look so good.
So the satay, they got beef and chicken mixed.
What is that?
Yakima, I think.
Oh, and it comes with satay sauce.
And?
This is five chicken wings
because they cut the wing and the drumette.
So there's actually 10 pieces.
It's a pretty good deal.
This was $10.
This one was $9.
And I ordered the oyster pancake for $6.
It's quite good to get affordable food right by the beachfront,
right by the lagoon.
Yeah.
Awesome.
This is our meal.
Look at this.
Look at the char on these wings.
Perfect color.
Smells sweet.
Dip it in the spicy sauce.
Wow.
It's so tender.
The chili sauce.
Is it a sambal?
I don't know.
I think sambal usually is thicker.
This is like a vinegary chili sauce.
Enhances the taste significantly.
It's good that we only have four days in Singapore.
If we stay longer, we will get fat.
We will probably have to pick up high rocks.
Or marathon running.
Got it.
Fried oyster.
That looks legit.
That's really good.
When a place only sells one dish, it must be good, right?
So usually they put oyster and some sort of batter and egg in it.
So it's like crispy and chewy, kind of doughy.
Comes with this spicy sauce.
That looks amazing.
It tastes really fresh.
It's actually really tasty.
Nice char.
But the moment I ate it, it reminded me of a couple months ago
when I got food poisoning and it was because of oyster.
And I haven't had oyster since.
But this one tastes really fresh.
Fingers crossed.
Because the other one was really good too.
Is there any other food you want to try?
I want to try chili crab.
But we will have to come back for that.
Chili crab is more fun if we had more people though.
Yeah.
This won't be the last time.
We will come back to Singapore again.
For sure.
