Welcome to week 7 of The Housley Farm Renovation Series!
This week we finally put the barn on the map, literally. The permit has been three weeks in the works, but that didn’t stop us from walking the property, putting stakes in the ground, and outlining exactly where the barn will live and how big it’s going to be.
Then came our favorite part: each of us wrote down what we want this space to become. Aden wants sleepovers, Ariah wants a music room and a spot to hang with her friends, Adam is dreaming up an AG park and a place of blessings, and I want a home for gatherings and fundraisers with the people we love. We also explored some of the old buildings on the property, and let’s just say Ariah and I made a very fast exit. Even the old bikes refused to cooperate, but that’s farm life.
Standing inside those stakes and hearing everyone’s dreams out loud reminded me that we’re not just building a barn, we’re building the place where all of it will happen.
Thank you for being part of this journey with our family. Be sure to like, subscribe, and turn on notifications so you never miss an episode.
A family in Napa, California, discusses the frustrations of waiting for building permits while planning the construction of a multifunctional barn. They explore the existing old structures on their property, mark out the dimensions for the new build with their children, and attempt to start old farm equipment.
What's that uh, what's that smell? It's so strong. It is. I think Aidan has cologne on today. No,
it's a mosquito and tick repellent. Yeah, I wouldn't, I wouldn't suggest that as a cologne.
What are those plants called? They're the ones that repel mosquitoes and ticks. No,
I know what it's called. Plant that repels. Did you know daddy used to read the encyclopedia
for fun? Did you know that? What is that?
We have our own citronella plant. And your son just asked what an encyclopedia is,
but that's not what this episode is about. What's a permit? That's what this episode is about. What's
a permit and how do we get one? How long have we been waiting? Three weeks. Jeez. And we started
the interior demo because we're allowed to do that. You guys already saw that. Get it, get it,
get it. Same spot. We should hear back any day. It makes no sense. It makes no sense.
But this is the reality of, well, living in California, but also, you know, building your
own home. And we're still, there's still a lot to do just so you know. So it's not like we're
not doing anything. That's just, we want to see the big bang and the whole thing, you know,
be knocked down. That's coming. But what we could do in the meantime are things we still have to do.
And what is that? Well, we have to plan the barn out. Go through these old buildings. Yes. I don't
think we want to keep them. She hasn't been inside yet. I have. I'm really excited about this barn.
One, we love our guests to come and stay a while. This barn will be slightly a barn-a-minium. It'll
be a quarter of a barn-a-minium. Hey, that's what we talked about. It's going to be a barn
that eventually upstairs will have a room. Okay. A kitchenette. A kitchenette. A music room.
A bathroom. A bathroom. And then we'll have a bigger kind of like
guys area to the other side. And then downstairs will be kind of like an ag barn, but nice. Like
they'll attractively park there. I'll put my motorcycle there. We can have like events and
parties. Yes. So that's number two. Yes. That's the number two reason. We love our community here.
And I just have to say, huh, Napa has just given us a big hug, except for the permit. And
we are so grateful for our community that we love hosting events. We love raising money for our
community, giving back. And the idea is one day to be able to use the downstairs barn part,
which will have our tractor and motorcycle and stuff for most of the year. You pull it out and
you have a barn party, the fundraiser or whatever it is to help bring money to nonprofits. So that's
the idea. So it's kind of a, it's a twofold. It's going to be a working barn and a working barn.
Alright, let's go check out the barn space. Let's go. Let's go. This is, are you getting this
Gavin? I'm close. I'm close. We've been doing this. I'm not kidding for about five, maybe even
more than five minutes. Oh, shoot. It's turned into a competition. I missed by like an inch.
Hit the mailbox. See if you can mom. Are you for serious? Great. Now I'm doing this.
That doesn't count. Boom. Got it. No, it's right there. Hit it. So this is where our barn
is going to be. Correct. The goal is to have a really gorgeous circle driveway. Yep. So that
when we have our parties, you know, you have a place to drive in. Yep. I want to clean up this
create a little landscape, natural, natural landscape. And the barn will be, and the barn
will be, yeah, these barns have been here for a while. Can you tell there's, there were, there's
kind of two in a portable. He's actually aren't built that bad. They're just old and they're not
the right shape. All right. This was a vineyard office. A couple of different vineyard management
companies use this. They didn't clean it all the way out when they left clearly,
but I can use this. This is for tying off grapes. Brand new world. Look at that.
I'm afraid to check. I'm afraid that cockles will like jump back.
That's a rat's nest out. That is a rat's nest.
Done. She's gone. You guys, she is down.
Oh my gosh. I was beating my pants. Did you see how fast she ran?
This was where they stored all their, their equipment. The end of vintage company. There's
some tires because they let the door open when they moved out. So the birds were in there for
a while. Now the birds are out. I mean, it's not built bad. It's just, it's the wrong size.
What was that? What was what? Something fell. Nothing. You jumped on it. Yes it did. No it
didn't. Your run was horrible. It was horrible? Did I look like Claire to the Caribbean?
The last one's right here. Oh wow. Wow. What was this? Also this is where they stored
more of their equipment. Okay. Super ugly. They clearly don't have style.
It's not meant for style. It's meant for practicality. This was more like practicality.
Wonder what they put on these. Recommend not touching that. Probably. Let's regroup outside
because I have some questions. It's clear tile. We could sew it. They should figure it out. Okay.
My question is. Yeah. We are tearing down all of this. I believe so. Okay. I think we should. Yes
it's super ugly. What? Oh I realized what that, what I thought fell on me. What? It was my earrings.
Mom. We have to be able to have an idea of the size. And that's what we're here today. That's
what we're here today to do. Each one will have their own stake. Okay. So RyRy, Aiden, go get a
stake. Hurry up. And you're going to write something on these stakes once you stick it.
There's a place I want you all to stick these stakes, but that wouldn't be appropriate for
television. The first thing is I want to have space, right? So we don't want to go too much
further because the pond's here. So you can see where the slab of the original barn or one of the
original barns ends right here. And the power's right here. You see the water right here. So you
don't want to go further this way. You want to go from basically here that way. So the first stake
should be how far I want to go. I was thinking kind of where this is really at right now. So
maybe right in this area will be the first stake. Who wants to put the first stake in? Me. You got
to write something on that stake that means something to you. Like what do you wish this barn
will do? Put a thought on there. Sleepovers. Oh, I love that. That is so cute. Okay, this side.
Good. Okay. They're sword fighting. It's all fun until someone gets hurt. Here we go. Okay. So
Aiden, stick that stake. Put it right about here. All right. That is not going in. Yeah,
you can't hit it hard enough. Want some help? Yeah, I don't want to cook my hand.
Here we go. Good job, buddy. Now it's time to smack it. Oh, geez. Pretty much did a good
enough. You did a pretty good job. Not bad. Good. Good. Got that one for me? Okay, Rye.
Hold the tape measure. So 45 is here. Maybe we should do 45 because there's more space over
there. What do you think? I would like it a little bigger. It's pretty big, baby. No bigger. Okay.
50 is right. Yep. Perfect. Right there. Right where my toe is. Lock it in. Okay.
Gatherings and fun raisers. Okay. Fun raisers. What did you say, Rye? Your daughter went.
Ready? Go mama. Go mama. Go mama. Go mama. Daddy, you want to? Yep, finish it for you.
Thank you, honey. Oh, here we go. Good. All right. I'm gonna write
hanging out with my friends. Hanging out with my friends and playing music in the music room.
Okay. Oh, that's great. I love the idea of having a music room.
I love that. I'm not sure how much money she thinks we have.
I'm not sure how much you guys think we have a lot more money than we have.
I'm going to put a Raya in cursive. In case we didn't know. Heart. Star. Exclamation mark.
A cross for Jesus Christ. Look, I put hanging out with my friends. Nice handwriting.
Babe, she has great handwriting. Can we do it for you? No. Oh. So I put my hands like this.
Good. All right. Now, mine. Come here. Over here. I'm gonna do mine 10 feet back,
just in case we decided to go a little bit shorter. It gives me an idea of where the
house, where the barn will be. Right there. Hold that right there. What are you writing,
daddy? What is he writing? On the other side, I put blessings.
I knew dad was going to put something emotional because that's just how he's built.
Good. All right. Mom, I just heard Ratatouille.
You heard Ratatouille? I'm out. Araya, don't go running. Araya. Araya.
All right, we got two things. We got to move down to the barn. And we can use them around
the property right now. They came from my pop's house. One is a four-wheeler. We used to use the
winery. Oh, it's supposed to work. But the battery trickle charger has been plugged in for a while.
So unplug the battery charger. I have a feeling the battery is probably dead in this thing,
which means a pull start. Oh. Oh, it has something in there. Oh. Go, daddy. Look at those calves.
All right, you guys all try. I'm going to try to keep the gas going for you. Go.
Oh, my. This is way harder than a dirt bike. Oh, my. I'm trying. You want to go first? Yeah.
Sure. I will hold your pink butter. It's harder than it looks. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh.
Adam, you made it look so easy. Oh, dear.
This. You can still pull it even off the battery. You're not doing it?
I'm not putting my back out. Dad, how do you do that? How do you do that with one hand?
You want me to keep the gas going? I don't think it's working, guys. Nope. No, it's not starting.
I'm sorry. These came from grandpa's farm, for the record. So, hey, let me try this way to get
off. Because if you start it up, you don't know what you're doing. And that would not be good.
Wait, I have a question. If we get this working, can I drive it around the driveway?
Yes. Let's go. He looks giant compared to that. The chair is too small for him.
This may be dead, too. Oh, my gosh. It was working earlier. We're 0 for 2. Yeah. So,
what is plan B? Plan B is to get two new batteries. So, B for battery. It says 50.
Oh, gosh. All right, get out. And John Deere Green on a hot summer night. Oh, Lord.
You know Billy Bub loves Charlene. This family is crazy. Obviously, we're going to be building
right now and tearing things down. We're close. The inside, we're torching things up. The big
walls ain't coming down yet because we're waiting for a permit. We're almost there.
We're this close. She might get us over the line. This one right here. She might. I wouldn't be
surprised if you didn't get your permit in a week. Okay. A week? Two weeks probably tops.
Two weeks? They respond to the squeaky wheel of the client, the homeowner, the taxpayer.
I think we should have a Raya call. Mr. Raya, if you were going to call the county
and ask for our demo permit to be approved and our permits for our house to be approved,
what would you say to them? I would say our house is totally fine. It's just ugly at the moment.
We're going to fix it. And you're being very annoying because you should have already said
yes. And you know, life is short, so just say yes. But the coolest thing is we now got an idea
of what our barn is going to look like and also what its main purpose is going to be. Yep. And
we laid it out. So now we can take that and start to design that part of the process. And also,
we found out that we need batteries. We need batteries for our four-wheeler and the mower
to help mow some of the big grass. Where's that from? Let me know in the comments.
I've never heard of that. My question is, have you built projects or done any kind of remodels?
And if you did, did you have any issues with getting things permitted? Put it in the comments
down below. And don't forget to like and subscribe and hit that bell button. It helps us build the
house. And re-watch the video. Please don't forget that. Got it. Bye guys. See you later alligator.
