From traditional Aussie pies and German bratwurst to fresh seafood, produce, and iconic donuts, they immerse themselves in the city's vibrant food culture, highlighting the market's massive scale and high-quality offerings.
It's my first time here in Melbourne and I think the best way to immerse yourself in the culture
of a new place is to try their food and I don't know a better place than here at the Queen Victoria
Market or Queen Victoria Market as I think it's locally referred to. This place seems massive,
there's all kinds of shops, restaurants, foods, I mean you name it they've got it here. We're
going to try to eat as much as we can today and I'm here with my friend Jana. She's excited to
try food too. Hello, hello. Victoria sponge.
Our first stop here is at Ferguson Players. We got to try ourselves some Aussie pies. Now I did
clarify are we supposed to eat these with our hands because I feel like they would not do that
in the UK but he told me yeah we're game so that's good for me. I like hand pies and he asked if we
wanted any tomato sauce and I said should we have tomato sauce and he said absolutely so we're gonna
have that too. Here's what we're working with. We got steak and cheese. Jana says it's very good.
I'll narrate your eating of it. Steak and three cheese looks amazing.
Oh my god that's so good. There is beef and cheese oozing out of it.
So good. That's like a nice beefy flavor. Okay should we try it with tomato sauce?
Jana figured out how to do it but she, wait so you just do that? Oh I like it. That's a good
invention guys. All right. Yeah. Tomato sauce gives it a little sweetness. I don't know why
I'm still calling it tomato sauce and not tomato sauce. I enjoy it though. Thank you. We also got
mini Auggies. They call them Auggies here. This is I think the equivalent of a Cornish pasty
which I think Auggie is the Cornish word for it. We got two mini ones. I figured we could each try
one. Jana, I don't think you've ever, I don't think you've ever tried a pasty before. I don't
think I have either. All right cheers. Cheers. I think this would be better if it was the bigger
size because this is like not an amazing bread to filling ratio but it is the like typical
sweet potato beef I think one. Tasty.
Some serious looking apple strudel. Next up we're gonna try the bratwurst shop and co.
Because not only have they been around since the 70s here in Melbourne but they also,
I think we're featured on Anthony Bourdain.
I got currywurst and I'm excited about that.
I can see the steam coming off of your sausage in a bread roll. Yeah, that's a nice beefy
brat. So I love that they gave me both lots of the curry powder on the fries and then also
plenty of that delightful ketchup. I'm a big fan of currywurst and I honestly wasn't sure what to
expect here but this is really really good. I don't know about you but that was delicious. I feel like
that currywurst was every bit as good as any currywurst I've had in Berlin and maybe better.
Maybe they know how to do Berlin better. You were saying that yours was really nice too.
Yeah, the bread was really good too. The sauerkraut was really surprisingly like mild. It was nice.
Maybe that's a palate thing for here. I don't know. Unknown. Anyway, that was a good spot.
I can understand why it's one of the places that's popular here at the market but we have
more food to try. I don't know how that's gonna go but we're gonna do it.
I can smell all the cheeses. I was admiring the cheeses at this corner larder shop that has
all kinds of cheeses and yeah they have this deal where you can get three cheeses for $12
but I was interested specifically in a unique Australian cheese. He was explaining to me that
the tasties are a form of cheddar but they're they're called a tasty because they're in a
big block. They're basically by how big of the block is so these ones right here are a smaller
block. I found some. Goose on the loose. Kangaroo salami. You gonna bring that home? I think I am.
I think I have to. I wonder if you can. I'm gonna ask but it seems like because out here would be
yeah yeah salami. Oh thank you. When the cannoli place offers you samples you try
rocky road. I think rocky road is kind of similar to U.S. rocky road but different.
Oh that's really good. I don't even know what that flavor is.
I have been to a lot of food markets in my life. This is one where it's really kind of
almost overwhelming. There's so many things that seem so good that I think we're having
trouble picking out what we want next. Everything is like perishable and so like a lot of the stuff
we can't get or like raw. I'm like I want it but I can't really get it. Yeah like Jana definitely
wanted to take home some kangaroo salami but it's to be kept refrigerated. I would
be here all the time if I lived here because you could just come here and buy like nice
quality butter. You can buy everything you need for your week here. It's great. I'm curious if you
are a local. Do you come here? Do you think this place is too touristy or are you like no this
place is awesome because it is. I didn't even realize. I thought we were in the meat hall.
It was just part of the delicatessen. This is the meat and fish hall. Jana loves seafood so she's
oh my god look at everything. Are you seeing them? I'm seeing them. Yeah they do look excellent.
I wonder if we were to try oysters here what kind should we try? Should we try Sydney Rock
oysters? Should we try Tassie oysters? Should we try Coffin Bay oysters? Those sound interesting.
Now I want to know where Coffin Bay is. Jana remember how you were reading about Morton Bay
those are them. Oh wow those are interesting. They are really cute. Wow those tropical lobsters are
huge. Oh blue crab. I didn't know that blue crab was here. Is it? I wonder if it's the
same as the blue crab in Florida. I don't know. I don't think so. Those look a lot bigger. That's
true. Yeah you're right. Look I feel Jana I feel like I feel like one of those dishes is calling
your name. That's true. When Jana found out that this tray of prawns and oysters was only
13 Australian dollars she was like I might have to get one on my own.
Okay what are you gonna try first? All right I'm going for an oyster. Okay me too. They gave us a
this is a chip fork in the UK. I don't know what it is. What do you call it here in Australia?
Oh I was gonna ask him. Okay oh they already detached it for me and everything.
How lovely. Okay cheers.
Oh that's nice.
Jana's gonna be getting more seafood.
Prawn. I don't know what I want with a prawn. Maybe a little Tabasco. I don't know. I'll just
eat it by itself. Oh the oyster's really creamy. Like really creamy. It's a really not normal word
I use for oysters. I'm not the biggest fan of shrimp but this is nice. It's soft. I don't
like it when it's like rubbery and this is nice. Rubbery is overcooked. I agree. Yeah maybe maybe
I just haven't eaten a lot of rubbery shrimp in my life. No this is good. This is a prawn. It's big.
So we just sampled the Coffin Bay oysters. They are the cheapest of the three kinds. So now I'm
like should we try? Should we try? Can we order? Like can we get one of each of them and then maybe
try like the other ones and see how they compare? Because if this is the cheapest one and it's
already delicious, what are the more expensive ones like? I don't know. Oh by the way this place
is called George the Fishmonger. A street performer is playing the Smiths and I got
overly excited about it. I feel like I have to go film him now.
Gosh this place just keeps going and I think we've got more buildings and stuff to
go to. So this is kind of more like a food cart section or like a food hall. I don't think I was
expecting it to be like in size and scale of like Borough Market in London. Okay the Queen
Market food hall. Oh that's what that is. Yeah the food hall. A to D sheds. Fruit. We bought so much
fruit in Sydney. Should we do the same here? How are your grapes so different? We bought grapes
in Sydney and they were so delicious and these look enormous like those. Yeah. When I buy ginger
in the grocery store in the U.S. it does not look like that. It looks dehydrated and sad.
The produce here just looks excellent. Okay they told us we can sample these
table grapes that we've never heard of before. They're long. One bite. Cheers.
Very good. Yeah very sweet. Purple grape. It's so wild that this place just keeps going. This
feels like when you go to like a county fair. Just gonna take me a few minutes to figure out
what change I have. I think I have enough to buy some strawberries. This whole thing was just the
B shed. So there's A through D or E shed. There's so many. This place is huge. It would take you
three years to try everything that's in here. I lose Jana and she's found a friend who's given
her donuts and a seat. That is really good. So you already tried it? I did yeah sorry I dug right in.
It's really good. This is probably the most iconic food item here which is funny because it's called
American Donuts. It's I think an Australian staple. I don't think it's that it seems that
American or Australian but we got the 5 for 11 bag and it's a great deal. They're very warm.
They're very fresh. The people that got in line behind me, I'm not sure who they were but they
seem like celebrities because they acted very important. Maybe they are. I don't know. I am
really excited because right now I can just feel how like soft and pillowy it is. And fresh. And
fresh yeah. They're so warm. I love that they it's so popular that they just keep cranking them out.
Oh my god. We were just in Hawaii and I feel like they kind of are more like a malasada than a real
like an American donut. Yeah. They're really doughy and that jam that's in the middle is so
good. It's such a good quality jam. This is one of those places I mean you never know.
Like is a place does a place have a long queue because it's delicious or does it have a long
queue because it's what you have to do and it's popular. This deserves a queue. This is so good.
I can't believe how good this is. I'm in heaven right now. I didn't expect to like these as much
as I do. They're delicious. I liked how much jam there was in just like a little bit so it didn't
like overpower like the dough. I really like dough because I love bread and all things dough.
I can see your point. I'm curious if you've had these do you think they have the right amount of
jam inside or do they need more? I don't know. I could always use more jam but that's just me.
I've been wondering when I could get a Drake shirt. Don't tempt me with your Taylor Swift
merchandise. This place truly keeps going. I think we've kind of just gotten into the
like crafts and goods but it's pretty impressive how giant this place is.
Jenna was getting thirsty so I got myself a strawberry matcha. Looks really good.
And this cute little trailer called Market Espresso. Oh my god that's really tasty. I keep
seeing like flavored matchas around like there are places here that have just matcha
that that's all they serve. I love that and I love this. We have one last place that we have to try
even though I don't think either of us is very hungry anymore. But you know I always love to
check reddit and reddit people said that the chicken corner has something called chicken
ribs and that they're a delight so that's what we got. We each are gonna try one. They're a dollar
a piece. An Australian dollar a piece. All right ready? Go for it. All right. Okay. Cheers. Yeah.
They're good? Really good. That's really good. Oh my god. Salty but very good. Salty,
so crispy and crunchy. This is some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. Yeah.
I wouldn't normally. Is this a wing? What is this even? A rib.
Don't question it. Oh my gosh. Yeah. Yeah the coating is just like so crunchy and
I. Is this what chicken salt tastes like? We still have enough chicken salt.
It's yeah it's just got good seasoning like oniony delight. Yeah. Yum. What a way to end the day.
The people of reddit did not let me down today. That was really tasty. I don't know. I don't even
know what my favorite thing was today. Everything was so good. I would say Jana's might be oysters.
Oh yeah. Yeah. That chicken was a surprising hit for me though. I'm curious if you've been here.
If we missed anything you think we should try for next time or if you haven't been here what is the
thing that you would most like to try? I hope that one day I can come back here because there's a lot
more food I want to eat here. Anyway thanks for watching and if you haven't seen the video where
we explore Melbourne, a lovely city, that'll be right up here. See you over there.
