AI GeneratedBrian Lilly reports on the controversial appointment of Maya Johnson, an American Democrat and former Hillary Clinton campaign staffer, as the Chief Operating Officer within the Prime Minister's Office. Lilly questions the suitability of hiring a foreign national with ties to political opponents of Donald Trump to advise on Canada-U.S. relations.
Mark Carney's secret American advisor inside the PMO.
Hi, I'm Brian Lilly, political columnist for the Toronto Sun.
Did you know that Mark Carney's top advisor on Canada-U.S. relations is an American?
In fact, she's a Democrat who in 2016 worked on Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.
Up against who?
Right, Donald Trump.
Little is known about this advisor who's just been promoted to the,
well, before today, never seen position of chief operating officer inside the
prime minister's office, the PMO.
We've never had a CEO in the PMO.
And now the person holding that job is an American woman named Maya Johnson.
Globe and Mail did a deep dive.
They even reported very little is known about her.
I did a deep dive on Google using AI agents to try and look her up.
Very little is known about this woman.
She worked on Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign.
She was a scheduler.
She joined the running club.
These are little things we know of because, well, some emails from John Podesta were leaked
to WikiLeaks, and she was part of the group around Podesta working for Hillary Clinton.
From there, she went on to work for a consulting firm apparently called Hawkfish, owned and
run by Michael Bloomberg, another Democrat.
And then she worked with, was probably introduced through Bloomberg to Mark Carney through the
Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero GFans.
Beyond that, this woman does not have an online footprint.
We don't know what her skill set is.
We don't know much about her.
She recently paid a $200 fine to Canada's ethics commissioner for failing to file all
the required paperwork for her ethics screen when she was hired on.
She joined Carney's PMO back in February of 2026 and apparently had worked on his campaign
from New York City before joining the government earlier this year.
Isn't it strange that we're hiring an American and a Democrat, someone who is going to be
opposed to President Trump, to advise the prime minister on how to handle President
Trump and Canada-U.S. relations?
Were there no Canadians available for the job?
Did we have to go outside the country for that?
Does she have her security clearance?
These are all valid questions, but ones we simply don't know the answers to.
We know very little about the advice that she's giving, but so far I would say that
the evidence shows it's not good advice because it's not working.
We haven't reduced the Section 232 tariffs.
We haven't had the Section 232 tariff removed.
We did not get the extension of CUSMA that we wanted in the Gordie Howe bridge deal.
That does not look like a good one for Canada.
Mark Carney is farming out a job that Canadians should be doing, a Canadian who understands
the United States.
Instead, we now have an American in one of the top positions in the Canadian government,
and nobody knows her.
Except Mark Carney.
Does that seem right to you?
So many questions to be answered.
So little that we know.
Let me know what you think.
