Tom Cruise discusses his latest collaboration with director Alejandro Iñárritu. He emphasizes that the project is a completely original story, marking a departure from his recent work with established IPs. Cruise highlights the meticulous preparation and the unique, experimental tone of the film, describing the creative process as a journey of discovery.
What's going on, everybody?
It's your boy Juju, a.k.a. Straw Hat Goofy, your movie guy.
And we all know who this man is right here.
The one and only legendary Tom Cruise here to talk about his new film.
Thanks, man.
Digger.
Thanks, man. It's great to see you.
Good to see you again, too.
I'm glad that you said that.
We've been doing this for a while, man.
I know.
Knowing each other for a good little minute.
I know. It's fun.
It's a lot of fun.
We've had a few adventures.
It's been fun.
Literally been around the world.
I know we have.
This is really fun.
Can I show you something?
Please.
The first time you and I ever met in an interview capacity,
it was actually three years to the day.
Really?
That we first did an interview.
Me, you, Reese, Mission Impossible, Dead Reckoning.
And I found the photo.
Wow, man.
Oh, I remember that. Yes.
That was fun.
It was a great day.
That was really fun.
Yeah, man. Great conversation.
Great time.
It was my first, like, look into who you are.
Your dedication to film.
Dedication to what you do.
And I was looking at this and I said, wow, three years.
So this is like a big full circle moment, man.
Oh, man.
And so I want to talk about you have been in this game for a while.
You've been killing it for a long time.
For 46 years.
46 years.
Killing it with so many different directors.
46 years.
And so you've worked with, you know, the likes of Steven Spielberg, Michael Mann.
You know, like the list goes on and on and on.
McHugh.
Now you're working with Alejandro Iñárritu.
And we know what he brings to the set.
I mean, we know his vision.
We know the beauty that he brings to the human spirit, to nature.
We're talking The Revenant.
We're talking Birdman.
And him combining with you.
Babel.
You know?
But now Titans are colliding with you and him.
And I know what you bring to the table.
We know what he brings to the table.
But I want to know from you, what is the most powerful thing about an Alejandro,
Tom Cruise combination?
I think you're going to have to tell me.
All I know is I, because I'm in it and I'm in it with him and I've seen his movies.
We were talking about it earlier.
I saw Amores Perros right when it came out and I, it's actually, I saw it before it
came out, when he finished it.
And I, he's just an amazing artist and you see the things in what he's created.
And this is a project that he's been wanting to make for 10 years.
It's a total original.
Something I've never made before.
I've never done anything like this before.
He's never done anything like this before.
And I think it enlightened and challenged him in every single way.
I mean, the amount of preparation, you know, he talks about it, that he's done, he's prepared
for this film more than any other film in his entire career.
And that's saying a lot because it, and the amount of time that we've spent together
and the detail of this, the detail, the skill level of this and the detail of this film
is, it's just next level.
I've just never done it.
That's what I was going to say.
It's next level.
Layer upon layer upon layer.
Yeah.
I've never described this to you before.
I've said it to other people, but I see you as like the Kobe Bryant of making movies.
Thank you, man.
That's an honor.
You see what I'm saying?
That's an honor, man.
That's an honor.
And what do we talk about?
I love Kobe.
LA boy.
I love Kobe.
And it's that attention to detail that you give to it.
Thank you.
You know, I, I talked to Alejandro when he, uh, for his movie, The Revenant on the 10
year anniversary.
He gave me one of the best quotes.
He says, when you make something like The Revenant, God is the director.
Right?
Wow.
And he has that attention to detail where everything has to be meticulous and he brings
that to this one.
We saw the trailer.
We saw those frames and everything is like, there's nothing left up to chance.
It's all curated.
Yep.
And knowing how like you have your hand in every department, you know, everybody, you
know how these things work.
I can see you two combining powers and making this movie in that way where all the details
just all come together to make something incredible.
Thank you.
It was, I just, I like working with him and contributing, you know, and seeing what he's
creating and the beauty of being able to work with, you know, so many different people and
artisans and to be able to work with Alejandro.
It's the joy of being in the film, working, but also seeing the developments, seeing his
viewpoint of life, you know, being there together and creating together.
It was just so much fun when it was, when it's over, I was like, man, this is, you
know, it was, as I said, you know, you can't, you can't write tone on a paper.
You can write things and you're reaching for tone.
You have to discover it.
And he understands that it was just a beautiful journey to make this movie with him.
I love that.
Now, something that I feel like we should celebrate right now, because you mentioned
that you've never done anything like this before.
Never.
This performance looks so different to what you've done before.
So fun, right?
You know, there's not, it's comedy and not comedy, it's not one comedy that fits all.
You know, there's a different rhythm.
There's a different style and tone from risky business to a rain man to a Jerry Maguire
or Les Grossman, American made, you know, edge of each one is very different kind of
comedy and different tone.
And it was fun discovering the tone on this.
So when it comes to discovering this character, what I, what I say we should celebrate is
this is your first time in almost 10 years of playing an unfamiliar character.
That's not a part of one of your pre-established IPs.
When you go into these roles and like, you know, we talk about how actors kind of like
lose themselves in roles like this in order to play this character.
But for you playing someone as unrecognizable as this, what do you recognize about yourself
when you play somebody unrecognizable?
I don't know.
You know, I'm, I'm just creating.
I'm like this.
I'm just, I'm going.
You play it.
I'm just playing it.
You know, what I do is the amount of preparation that I do and as we're working, we're discovering
and we're exploring and I'm, when I'm working, there's this tremendous amount of preparation.
It's so, when you see the final film, you'll see the amount of, I want to hide the precision.
I want to hide the work, you know, and I think that's the thing I, one of the many things
that I admire about Alejandro.
When I saw Morris Perros and I'm looking at that movie and it's handheld and you're going
through it.
I was like, what?
I was amazed.
You know, unfortunately it's like when you're in a field and you're like, you become skilled
at seeing things and you see things that maybe other people don't, but I'm looking at what
he accomplished, what I felt emotionally.
He immersed me in a cinematic world that's authentic, but it's cinema and the detail,
like it, you don't, you don't, but you don't see the mechanics.
It's not like I'm seeing the detail, but I knew what it took to make that movie.
And I'm not, I'm just feeling the film and only after like several times you've got to
look at it going, now you can see it's, but that's, that's the point of this film.
It's, it is very deliberate, but it is, we're playing jazz and when I'm, when I'm acting
in a film, I'm, I'm not trying to imitate take after take, but I know through the cameras,
I know the things that I have to hit, but I'm playing, I'm just trying to get to a place
where if you're playing jazz with it, you know, and I know, you know, I know what we're
going through and I, but it's that preparation.
Hearing you talk about that.
It's a Swiss army watch.
It's an orchestra.
You're in the middle of it.
And I could talk about this all day, but I believe that's all the time.
Is that it?
I think that's all we got.
You know, you and I have talked for like hours.
I know.
We'll, we'll, we'll do it again sometime.
We're going to do it again.
How about that?
Hey, enjoy the rest of your Sunday.
Hey, you too, man.
Thank you, man.
All right.
It's great to see you.
So good to see you.
Good to see you doing so well.
Come on.
You're doing well.
