AI GeneratedAlex Argen, a lifelong antique collector, visits the BCSPCA Vintage Thrift Shop in Brentwood Bay on Vancouver Island. After a promotional segment for Brooklyn Bedding, Alex explores the store, discovering an unexpectedly high volume of rare collectibles, including Silver Age comics, vintage records, and toys, eventually purchasing a graded Stan Lee autographed comic.
Hi, I'm Alex Argen. I've been buying and selling antiques since I was a kid.
Over the years, generations of our family have gotten involved in the business,
and I'll search just about anywhere I can to find hidden treasures both big and small. I never know
what I'll turn up next. It's about exploring new places, seeing new sights, and having fun. And
even though sometimes I get over my head, we try and make things a little better along the way.
This is Curiosity.
Hi, guys. I want to start off by thanking today's sponsor, Brooklyn Bedding. Last year,
we ordered our new queen-size mattress from Brooklyn Bedding, and they've given a special
offer again today for viewers just like you at home. Selecting your new mattress is super simple.
You can log into their website at brooklynbedding.com slash Curiosity Incorporated to get
our special offer of 30% off for our viewers. And at the end of this, we'll also put the QR
code up so you can just scan that. Just pause it on your screen. You can scan the QR code.
Why did we get a new mattress? Well, our old one was starting to sag,
and we'd had it for probably about 10 years or so. It was definitely time for an upgrade.
Once you're on the Brooklyn Bedding site, it kind of helps to figure out what mattress you need by
taking their easy quiz. They have a sleep quiz that you can take, and it guides you to the best
mattress for you based not just on size, but whether you like firm or soft mattresses, whether
you kind of sleep warm or you're somebody who's usually cold at night. You go through the quiz,
and you'll find the right mattress just for you. And when you order, you also get a 120-night sleep
trial along with a limited lifetime warranty. So after 120 days or within that timeframe,
just reach out to them, and they'll take care of you. We ended up going with the Aurora Luxe
mattress, and it's been perfect for keeping cool at night and has helped me have a better night's
sleep with my sore back. The mattress has not sagged one bit and still looks as good as new
today. Once you've selected your mattress, you're all set. Delivery is quick and easy, and if you're
in the United States, shipping is actually free, which is a big bonus. The mattress shows up in an
easy-to-unpack box, and just like magic, it expands into a full-size mattress right before your eyes.
Brooklyn Bedding also designs and assembles their mattresses in-house,
ensuring quality and craftsmanship are top-notch. Whether you need an excellent mattress for your
kids or if you're an athlete or on a budget, there's sure to be the one you need on their
site. Get your best night's sleep started by visiting brooklynbedding.com slash curiosity
incorporated to get 30% off today. Trust me, it worked out well for us. We love it. There's a QR
code. You've got to scan it. There's us, brooklynbedding.com slash curiosity incorporated.
Fantastic mattress. I know you're going to love it. We've had it for just about a year now, and I have
to say it's as good a mattress as any. In fact, it's better than most we've had before. It's cushy,
it's plush, and we love it. So check it out. Take their sleeping quiz online. Like I said, it's
really easy to do. You fill it out. You answer some questions, whether you're soft, medium,
whether you want a firm mattress. Check it out online, brooklynbedding.com. That's where it's at.
Now back to the show. Hey guys, and welcome to today's episode. I am here with my wife and my
aunt, and we are going to go inside of the BCSPCA Vintage Thrift Shop, which is in Brentwood Bay.
I've never actually been here before. I'm on Vancouver Island today, so we're going to go
inside, have a peek around, and see what they've got. Let's go. So the sign out front said they had
Silver Age Comics in stock, so that's what kind of drew me in, but I'm looking to see what they've
got donated out front here. Let's see. 20 bucks for a chrome stool. I guess that's about right.
Some artwork. Oh, 65 on the footstool is a little bit high, but you never know what they're going
to have, so we'll go peek inside and see. Okay, when you first walk in the door, they've got
all kinds of interesting stuff in the showcases, which is always good to check that out.
Victor, follow the bird. Got coins, cufflinks. Randy Bachman signed microphones from the Guess Who.
Oh, jazz. I used to like jazz albums. Sergio Mendes, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme.
Some early jazz can actually be pretty collectible, so it's always good to have a look. Peggy Lee.
If you get some early Miles Davis, I wonder if that's been picked over, if it's still in there.
Well, no Miles Davis, but they do have records. Actually, a good selection of vintage stuff for
a thrift shop. Nice old clocks and radios, Bakelite radios.
Oh, they've got a Jane West with all her accessories. I wonder what the
asking price on Jane West is. Hard to find with the box. Look, there's even Barbie's Cool Party.
Oh, and look at all the old comics up top. I was looking through this rack earlier. It said
Golden Silver Age Comics, five bucks each, and somebody must have just donated a whole pile of
old comics. Classics Illustrated. I got a whole bunch of 10 and 12 cent Fantastic Four and Superman.
Really early stuff, but I hadn't noticed that they've got even older stuff and other things
on the back. Some are even graded. An autograph by Stan Lee signed and graded. Some actually really
decent things. Wonder Woman number 14. Some heavy duty comics that were donated to this thrift store.
I'm just looking out there. There's the Amazing Spider-Man, the first appearance of Prowler.
I'm gonna have to take a good look at those. You don't usually come across
Silver Age Comics at a thrift shop. So we're seeing some real deal collectibles in here.
More so than I've seen in even antique stores as I've been out here. They got sports cards.
Oh, there's a complete set of 7576 Opichi Hockey. A dollar each. I'll have to look through that.
Sports cards individually priced. Oh, I'm gonna find some things here for sure. Look
at that. The Lincoln Futura. That's what they made the Batmobile out of. The original model
kit for that. 65 bucks. Guys, I'm finding stuff that's cool already and I haven't even looked
all around. I haven't even checked out. There's Wonder Woman. Gosh, what was that actress's name?
Catherine Bach was Dukes of Hazzard. That is Linda. Oh, I can't remember. Somebody at home
help me out. It's actually a pretty good variety of antiques in this store. I wasn't expecting to
come through and find actual like fine jewelry and it just said it's a it's an SBCA thrift store
so some people were donating some really good stuff here. Nice old pocket watch right there.
Oh, I like the trophy. It looks like a racing trophy. First place trophy for some kind of car
race probably back in the 1950s. What they're asking on that. Gosh, look at all these cases.
It's hard to stay focused. Oh, I see they've got their rock records are separated separately
and they're playing them. Got Led Zeppelin going on right now but
might be some good stuff in here. Melissa is busy over there looking at the books. You find anything
yet? Not yet. Not yet? Okay. She's looking at the books. I'm gonna work my way around to the back of
the shop. Oh, I didn't even notice the guitar sitting there. Dean's Stylist electric guitar.
Nice hollow body electric. It's actually a pretty well curated store. You know from
of course your usual sort of thrift clothes but the amount of collectibles in here is
pretty impressive but to be honest with you I'm gonna go back over and have a look at those comic
books. I'm easily distracted by all the other neat stuff in here like the Coca-Cola clock is
kind of cool. Some of it is priced like an antique store but then some of it there might be a little
bit of room. Oh, look at this little sprout cookie jar. That's cute. There's some Pyrex but
okay I'm trying to go slow but I am going to go back over and have a look at the comic so
let's roll on down to the toy and comic section. See if we can find a few things to pick up. I mean
I've already got a handful of five dollar comics. This is what I'm getting for five bucks each by
the way. King Size Thor number four, The Flash, Fantastic Four 78, 86. Twelve cent comics for five
bucks each even though the condition is not great that's still I'm really happy with that.
Romance comics we got some in here too. Somebody must have donated just an absolutely massive
collection of comics here. The first Ewoks comic number one. It's like their whole collection of
comics got donated here. Blondie, that's an oldie. I don't even see a price on it but these are
probably like yeah 10 cent Blondie comics. A stack of them for five bucks. That'd be hard to pass up
10 cent comic stack for that price. I just you never find this this kind of old stuff
but what I'm interested in is back there Wonder Woman number 16. There's like really decent stuff.
Okay I'm gonna ask if I can have a better look at some of these things and see if I can find some
real good ones. Oh look at the old uh Trans Am back there too. 79 Trans Am. You see that? I'm
so much to see. You got Lone Ranger action figures from the 80s. You got
vintage video game sets down there. Somebody had a really good collection and here it all is.
What's in the showcase? Video game stuff, some statues, PlayStation controllers.
Okay I'm gonna ask if I can see some of the things at the back and I'll show you what I
We stopped in the SPCA thrift shop. Ended up getting a Stan Lee autographed Fantastic Four
number 54 with the human torch on the cover. It's graded by PSA in five and a few other comics. So
some really good finds today. If you're ever in the Brentwood Bay area come and check it out.
They've got more than you'd expect at a thrift shop. Lots of antiques and collectibles. As for
me I'm back on the road for more adventures. We'll see you guys soon and as always bye for now.
