News 12 uncovering disturbing new details about the man arrested for setting fire to
a federal building in Manhattan.
We're learning the Army veteran was actually arrested in Brooklyn last year and charged
with a hate crime.
News 12's Kelly Kennedy tracked down video of that arrest.
She joins us now from Grand Army Plaza.
Kelly, bring us the disturbing details.
A source close to the investigation tells me that this all went down right here at Grand
Army Plaza in Brooklyn about a year ago.
So last summer, I'm told there was a protest going on and Andrew Arabaka, that federal
suspect, was here protesting.
Now a vehicle got caught up in some of the chaos from that protest.
That's when I'm told that Arabaka randomly went up to that van and slashed its tires.
Take a look at the video.
Were you able to slash the tires?
It's pretty far from here.
We walked the plaza by Prospect Park.
New video obtained by News 12 shows Arabaka, the same man suspected of the calculated fire
bomb attack at a federal building in Manhattan, getting arrested in Brooklyn last summer.
His car is stuck over there.
The video picks up after the crime was committed, but you can see a van with two flat tires.
Then the victim gets out to confront Arabaka, who is wearing a green hat and holding up
a vulgar sign, which we've blurred.
The 43-year-old later arrested about a half a mile away.
The video appears to show officers holding a knife they recovered, along with an ID identifying
the man as Andrew Arabaka.
A source tells News 12 Arabaka was charged with criminal mischief and a hate crime, but
the hate crime charges were eventually dropped.
I'm told Arabaka was court ordered to attend anger management classes, do community service
and pay restitution to the victim.
He then received a disorderly conduct violation.
We reached out to the Brooklyn DA's office, but were told they couldn't comment because
the case is sealed.
On Monday, Arabaka was arrested again.
After federal prosecutors say he fired a BB gun towards Federal Plaza, poured a flammable
liquid outside the building, set it on fire and threw fireworks into the flames.
Investigators say Arabaka deliberately chose the entrance because it was busy and he knew
people could be hurt.
Investigators telling us the attack was motivated by anti-government and anti-ICE beliefs.
Authorities recovered a wagon filled with weapons, including a BB gun, a machete, hatchets
and a sign reading ICE off our streets.
Now one person was hit in the head from flying debris.
Now Arabaka is facing a federal charge that carries a sentence of up to 40 years in prison
if he's convicted.
For now, reporting live from Grand Army Plaza, I'm Kelly Kennedy, News 12.
