We begin tonight with breaking news. 11 people accounted for, but several of
them hurt after Kidmore Air float plane crashed in the San Juan Islands. The
crash happened just before 5 30 in the shallow Bay off the Susha Islands.
That's north of Orcas Island. Video from a witness. Jonathan Scott captured
the emergency landing. You can see the plane did not take a rapid descent into
the water, but landed on the water before colliding with rocks on the
shore. Witnesses and officials say everyone 10 passengers and a pilot were
able to get out before the float plane later went up in flames. Officials tell
us the plane took off from Lake Union and was in route to Roach Harbor. The
San Juan County Sheriff's Office says the injuries range from head injuries
to broken bones and even lacerations. At least one person was in critical
condition. There were three people that were flown off for injuries by air
ambulance, two by one by air ambulance and two by the Navy. Um, I believe they
all went to Bellingham and then four patients transported to Friday Harbor
and then the four other individuals were transported over the Bellingham
video from witnesses shows what appears to be two of those passengers on a
medic boat coming into Friday Harbor, one of them on a stretcher being
wheeled off the dock. As for the crash, FOX 13 spoke with one person up in the
San Juans who tells us it was a stormy time around that crash. There's been
thunder and lightning here this afternoon. Um, around 4 30 here in
Friday Harbors when we saw the first thunder and lightning and the wind and
the rain really start to pick up. So, um, it's starting to ease up now, you
know, at 7 30 and we're getting a little break, but it's been windy and
stormy for the last couple hours. The exact cause and reason for the
emergency landing has not been released. We do know the FAA is
investigating and that environmental personnel have been called in to
monitor any impacts to the bay.
