I'm Sergeant Cooper Malden, that's C-O-O-P-E-R-M-A-U-L-D-I-N.
I'm the media relations sergeant with the Fremont Police Department.
So today we're here to talk about an incident.
This afternoon at approximately 3.38 PM, our dispatch center received calls
at an assisted living center on Walnut Avenue here in Fremont.
The calls indicated that a suspect was on scene armed with a firearm and with a duffel bag.
Additional calls indicated the person was last seen in a meeting room and was holding two people hostage.
Multiple Fremont police officers responded.
They located the suspect and an officer-involved shooting occurred.
The suspect was injured and was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital.
As of now, the suspect is the only person known to be injured
and there are no additional public safety threats to the Fremont community.
Fremont police detectives and additional resources have been called out
and are on scene investigating the incident.
And it is important for our community to know that Walnut Avenue is closed between Fremont and Liberty.
Additionally, based on a preliminary investigation,
the California Department of Justice is going to be the lead agency investigating this shooting.
I have absolutely no information on any sort of relationship with the suspect and anyone else that was on scene.
Yeah, I have no information on that at this time.
I have no information about what the security is at the assisted living center.
We expect to be investigating this case well into the night.
Again, the California Department of Justice will be the lead agency on this case
and we expect to be here, like I said, well into the night.
And we're going to be looking for all the same evidence we look for in any other case of this magnitude.
I don't know exactly how long he was on campus.
All I know at this time is our investigations unit did contact the Department of Justice
and it was decided that they would be the lead agency.
I don't have the exact information as to why at this time.
No, I have absolutely no information on any sort of relationships involved with the suspect at this time.
No information. So this is still a very fresh investigation.
There's still going to be a lot of questions to be answered.
But at this time, that's all the information I have.
So what I indicated was that the initial calls that came into our dispatch center
did indicate there was a suspect.
He was on scene.
And the person calling in reported that he had a firearm and a duffel bag.
I'm not sure who that was that called in and reported that information.
We don't have any identities confirmed at this time.
I have not.
As far as I know, it's just been reported as a firearm.
I don't know exactly what type at this time.
I would encourage them to reach out if they have a loved one
at an assisted living facility here on Walnut.
I'd encourage them to reach out to that facility before making any visits.
But I don't have any particular direction for those people at this time.
All right. I'm going to go check in with the incident commander.
Thank you very much.
As of this time, you may get updates from us
or you may get them from the Department of Justice
because they're taking lead on the investigation.
But any information that we can share, we absolutely will.
As of now, we have no additional briefings scheduled.
But if there is one, we'll let you guys know.
All right. Thank you very much.
