Hi guys, welcome back to my channel
I'm Joni young and I'm going to be showing you step-by-step how to paint the landscape today
Here are the colors that we're going to be using on this 11 by 14
double primed black canvas deep magenta cadmium red
cobalt or ultramarine blue phthalo blue
sap green
lemon yellow
And we're going to be using titanium white or any white that you have or any variation of these colors
I'll list all of them down below in the description as well as the brushes we're using today. So let's go ahead and get started
I'm going to begin with my large blending brush. I'm going to get a little bit damp and dry it off. You take some yellow
and some neon orange
So we've got a few other colors here that we're going to be incorporating
And i'm just going to start
Dusting little circles like this creating a cloud effect
Now you can see the yellow over top of the black give the green tone but when we add some white
That's going to change a little bit
I'm going to pick up a little bit more of these two colors
So i'm going to go this way then i'm going to go this way mainly using the corner of my brush to push and turn around with
Now i'm going to take a little bit of white
Just get a little bit like this
I'm going to do the same thing
I'm going to start to layer over really soften this up
So we're working wet on wet and applying lots and lots of layers
to really build up
An interesting cloud effect now that we've added a little bit of white over top of that
I'm going to take some more orange and some more yellow
And do another layer
So i've got a clean dry brush now. It's just a little bit damp
And i'm going to take some cobalt blue a little bit of white
Tap the two together
And i'm going to start
Doing some circles
Starting here right into part part of the yellow and the orange
Pick up a little bit more blue this time more blue than white
So keep gently
Making light little circles
Then I want to take before this paint dries I want to take a little bit of white and some phthalo blue
I'm going to go ahead and just start partially
on
that cobalt blue
Little circles like that a little bit of white
I'm going to take my magenta
A little bit of white
Start layering a little bit
Look how pretty that is a little bit over the blue now to make it show up a little bit more
Very lightly
This way when we layer over part of another color, we're going to make a whole new tone and shade
Okay, I think that looks
Really nice for now
all right, so
I was able to get just a little bit
of neon pink out of my
almost empty
tube
really pretty color
Take a little bit of white to that
I've got that gorgeous color
And
maybe
Maybe we'll add a little bit
Right from the top here a little bit like that. How pretty
okay, so
Let's now switch over to
the number eight filbert brush
I'm going to take a little bit of white
And a little bit of yellow
That might be too much yellow. Let's add a little bit more white to that
And I think I want
My sun to be right here
But it's going to be peeking in from the clouds
So I won't do a full circle. I'll just have it right about there
Leave it like that for now
and then
I'm going to pick up more of that color
I'm just going to start
making little
peaks
on these clouds
Just like we did the other day
I'll have a link for that video below if you guys missed it
It's called stairway to heaven and it's mostly in blue
And i'm going to take some white with some neon orange
Right on the tip of my brush
Barely touch that canvas
Just little soft peaks
So this is where our staircase is going to be coming from so i'm not going to do
really any
Peaks in there
lots of little ones
When we make them small like this
It instantly makes
something farther away
So we get that perspective going
Of this is closer to us and that's further away
And we'll do the same thing with our staircase we're going to make little tiny stairs little lines and then they're going to get bigger
and bigger and bigger
That gives us that feeling that we're going in and up those stairs, which is a really nice
Uh thing to be able to do in a painting. It's nice to look at
I'm going to take a little bit more of that yellow
and white
And just add a few right in here
I'm going to keep the tones that we have here, but just highlight them. So i'm adding a little bit more
White to my brush into those colors
And if your paint is a little bit too wet underneath
Um, you'll know if it's too wet when you go to put the paint there and it kind of just takes off the layer underneath
Then you can just kind of move on to something else and wait for it to dry or you can use a blow dryer
So I like to have a hairdryer really close by on hand just to just give it a quick dry off in order to
apply the next layer
I'm going to take a little bit of that neon pink
And I come right in here
Just add a little bit like that
A little bit more
Right in here
On an angle like that
Okay, then i'm going to go over
to my magenta
Wiggle my brush get it nice and flat again
And i'll start
adding some
whiter ones now
My brush is a little bit too dry. The canvas is a little bit too dry in that area
So I just need to loosen
My paint up a little bit with some water
Back mix a bit more color up
and slightly go
I want the colors to blend into one another so you don't really know where one starts and ends
So i'm going to go and bring this magenta slightly up into the orange and the yellow slightly into the phthalo
Okay, now i'm going to go into the phthalo blue and white
So let's take a little bit of white
a little phthalo
You know what? Let's take a little bit of that yellow
We can take white yellow and phthalo
and make turquoise
And I think that'll look really pretty right in here
Let's make this one a little bit more
yellowy
Still got that
into turquoise in there
It's almost like a rainbow effect, isn't it?
Okay now
back to
Just the phthalo
phthalo and white
Let's do some bigger ones now
Just keep layering and layering. This is such a simple technique
All of you guys watching whatever level you're at if you've never painted before you can do this
Take a little bit more white
Make some lighter ones
Right here now. We're gonna go into
a little bit
More of the phthalo still have a little bit of white on there
Let's start using that cobalt blue
so cobalt
Mix the two up a little bit darker first
And
Remember we want them to
Start to blend into one another
And add a little bit of it right up there
the peach
Orange and cobalt are complementary colors
Well, sometimes I say cobalt sometimes I say ultramarine blue. It's because to me
They're pretty much the same
So whatever one you have
You can use it'll work
Gives you more of a purpley blue one of my favorite colors now, let's make some
Bigger ones
so I want to take this is this paint is drying quite quickly, so
I'm able to pull in some sun rays here. I'm going to do a few little sun rays
I'm going to take some white
And a little bit of yellow a little bit of orange like that
Pretty peachy color
and
Maybe right from here
Actually, i'm going to switch over to my flat brush. I thought that one was big enough, but it's not
Except that color again
We're just going to do a few of these right now
and then
We're going to come in with our staircase
Now depending on how wet your paint is here. You might accidentally pick some of that up
So check your brush and I see that I picked up some blue so i'm going to
Quickly wipe that off or wash it off if I have to
So we're just taking a little bit of water a little bit of that white
yellow and orange
Okay, i'll leave that for now
Back to my filbert take a bit of white right in here right there like that
Actually, I think this one looks like it has a little bit of a bow to it so we don't want that
And straighten that out
That looks a little bit better
Sometimes it's hard to get the right angle when i'm filming
Haven't mastered that quite yet
That is fine for now
So I want to take
I'm going to do
Let's see
A little bit of phthalo blue and a little bit of white
Maybe even a little let's add a little bit of that sap green. We haven't incorporated that color yet
a little bit
and
Where do we want our staircase going?
Let's start right there
little ones
Little ones like that
Then we'll take a little bit more of the blue and the green
Where it's a bit harder to see
The lighter color there, so we're going to make it darker
a little bit more green
Grab a bit of water on your brush
If you need to help that paint come out
A little bit more right there
Another one right there
I'm gonna wash my brush out and i'm gonna take
a little bit of turquoise, so
Yellow and phthalo blue with some white
I want to
Put my pinky right here
Just to steady my hand
I'm just tapping at this point because they're so small
Now as they get bigger
I can begin pulling
I'm going to pick up a little bit more white
more white this time
and
I'm going to add a little bit
a little bit more
like that
Now i'm going to add
a bit more blue
And you can have
Let's maybe put another stair right there. It looks like there's too too much of a gap
Now as we get down here
To create that perspective of more of a foreground
we're going to make
these wider
Take a bit of blue white yellow
So just like that
Add a little one down here
Leave a shadow under here. So let's go back to our green
and phthalo blue
And we'll just add a little bit right there
Maybe a little bit more. Isn't that a cool effect you guys?
They're so fun to paint. I love painting stairs
I just want this to kind of look
a little bit fuzzy down here
and then
I think what I want to do is add
some foliage
On either side maybe of this staircase going up
Maybe we'll add some pretty flowers a little bit and then at the very end when we're all done. We'll do a nice soft
A few streaks of sun rays coming down for our foliage i'm going to use
If you have a really small mop brush, that would work great. I've got a really small one right here
So this is my smallest. It's not numbered. Sorry guys. Actually it is it's a half inch
It's half inch right there you guys can see that's really small
And I believe this is the artist loft
Brand i've had these ones for years. They're so well
First of all, they're really cool because they look like glass and they have pretty
colors on the end
And they have this little rubber grip here that kind of has an indentation
So, you know if you paint for hours on end like I do you can develop
sore fingers from holding the brush for so long
But this is really nice and soft, but it's artist loft and it's a really nice brand. So i'm going to begin
Working on some foliage. I don't want it to take away too much from the painting
I just want to enhance and make this staircase more inviting and beautiful and kind of heavenly looking
So i'm going to tap into my sap green. This is my go-to green for landscapes and foliage. It's a yellowy green
warm not cool
cool would be more of a
a blue green
Okay
So I think i'm going to start
Adding a little bit right there
And then kind of just have that stop and just disappear right there
Now as these get smaller
As the stairs get smaller and farther away
uh your
foliage
Needs to as well
So you're going to have to switch over to a smaller brush. But before I do that
I'm going to come in on this side
And i'm going to follow through
You can even make it look like
There's some moss dripping
To get into these smaller areas here. I'm going to use my
number eight filbert brush
Okay, it's the right size
I'm, just going to soften this up a little bit because it's farther away
And when things are farther away
They're a bit more faded and blurry
Okay, so
Start doing some little ones here
And then they just disappear
You can make this look a little bit higher in some spots
Put more shadow in there
It gets closer
You can do a little
Railing and now all you have to do is just slide your brush
Like this and then smaller and smaller and smaller
So that's something as well
That's a nice kind of a look is having a little railing like that
So a little bit of sap green on the end
Just pull straight up
smaller
oops
smaller smaller smaller
And then we'll do the same on this side
so
little railings
and fence posts
Are a little bit challenging for beginner painters
um
It's hard to know where to come in and put them especially when you get in the area like this where the stair goes
and curves over
I just go with that
Curve if the stairs in here more then you're going to put your fence post in there
and don't worry you have to
Go over top
If it feels wrong
To go over top of your stair or the the post before that just do it. Anyways
Okay, there's another one right there, too
And then what we're going to do
Is without washing the brush take some of our lemon yellow
Or any yellow that you want. I just happen to
Be really enjoying my artisa lemon yellow lately a little bit of white
I think sort of an army green color
and
We'll begin by
tapping
A little bit of highlight here
Soften this up
You can add
the highlights
On our little railing here, too
at the same time
You can make it look like
Those flowers and vines or we haven't done flowers yet, but the greenery here foliage
Kind of just growing across the staircase too and just spilling over. I like that kind of a look
Now as we get down in here
You want to add a little bit more
Of the sap green it's more shadow and subdued kind of fading away down here at the bottom
so
Remember to keep it darker
Back to our light color
I don't know about you guys, but i'm really
Enjoying the vibe of this painting. It feels hopeful to me
hopeful
Like we're getting into a beautiful place we're coming down here from the bottom where it's been
Turmoil and and a tough time
And I say that because I don't know when you guys you guys could be watching this
Uh the day I upload this video
And you can relate or you could be watching this years from now with the coronavirus long gone, but that's where we're at right now
It's 2020
It's april
And we're going through a tough time
And I want to give hope to people
I want you guys to feel
positive
And hopeful and this painting is just coming to me from out of my head
I try not to think too much about
Exactly what i'm going to paint. I don't like to use reference photos
That's just me it's not wrong
And if you guys like to use reference photos, that's fine. If you're painting from this, that's that's fine. That's what it's here for
To inspire you guys
I'm, just going to dust a little bit of this right on the stairs
Give them more of an earthy look
Okay
now
I'm going to add even more of a highlight up top there
I'm going to wash my brush out because i've got a lot of paint
In it and it's starting to dry at the end
I'm going to actually go back to my mop brush
I usually don't let paint sit in it like this, but it's only been a couple minutes
um, I want to use it for down here, so i'm going to take my
lemon yellow
Just kind of twirl my brush around a little bit to get those bristles
Somewhat together take a little bit of white
And add some light and then down here
Like I said, you're gonna have a little bit of light
but it's gonna be
a little bit darker
and being on a black canvas, this is gonna
All dry just a little bit darker
I wouldn't I don't really want it to but I know that's what happens and
I can't help it. I love painting on a black canvas
I'm just gonna add a few little
few little bits of
Moss or whatever just hanging down here. I'm going to
Quickly go over to a liner brush. This is a longer liner brush. I see that my
Camera is getting low
Low battery, so i've got to do this quickly. Now i'm going to take white
And yellow i'm almost done this painting anyways
Add a little bit
A little bit of a highlight there on some of those
And if it's too bright
You can just take
finger
Just smudge it a bit
And add a little highlight on those stairs
A little bit there. Let's just take a bit of our
Sap green that we made
With the yellow to make a darker kind of a shade of sap green take a little round brush
A little older one if I didn't have this for years, but it works
just fine
and
Take some of my neon pink here
Maybe we'll add a few little flowers
Just a few little dabs
That's all you need to do just to get the indication that there's some little flowers here
We won't make them all the same color. We'll just take straight neon pink
And add a little bit of that
Then we can take let's take some cadmium red
It gets down here. It's going to be darker, right?
More subdued orange shadow
It looks really pretty
Leave a few spots
a little bit
Then we can take some neon orange
and some white
A little bit of both twirl your brush
Get a little bit on the tip like that
a little bit
orange flowers
I think we need to tie this in have a little railing. So let's do that. Let's take
our sap green first
And we'll go right from here
We'll turn over and up
You take your little
Railing close off. That's okay. You can go right over that
Really touching
Right down like that
So that it curves over
Take a little bit of white
a little bit of yellow
a little highlight there
I'm going to do this a couple of times just to
that
I just want to blur that up a little bit
A bit of sap green here and make it a bit darker
Should be darker down. Okay. So the last thing we're going to do
Take a large flat brush
number 11
I'm going to take some white
Maybe a little bit of yellow
Really soft buttery yellow there
And i've dried this all off I just took a couple of minutes to dry all the flowers and the greenery off
So I don't pick it up
and
Pull in some beautiful
beautiful little sunrays
Very thin coat white and yellow
I think that's a really pretty
positive hopeful looking painting
I hope you guys enjoyed this one
